• Comparing lists of objects and update

  I have a view, passing a LIST of Originals to this method. Before the post happened, i changed some of the properties. I now receive the updated list as a parameter in my method and would like to update the database with these new values. [HttpPost] public ActionResult NewValue(Page model) { var ListOfOriginals = Session.Query<Original>().ToList(); //GETS the objects i want to update listOfOriginals = Model.Pages // Model.page is the new list containing the updated values RavenSession.SaveChanges(); return RedirectToAction("Index"); } When i debug, i can see that listOfOriginals gets the new values. The problem is that i dont know how to update the RavenDB whith these new values. I tried adding this: Session.Store(listOfOriginals) before the SaveChanges() but that resulted in an error. Maybe there is a much better way of doing this?

• Why is it not possible to call RegFree COM and .NET from the VB IDE (VB6 & VBA)?

  Hi I have an example project with works when called from compiled VB6 but not from the IDE or from Excel's VBE. There are 3 DLLs QA.DLL, QB.DLL, QAW.DLL. QA is written in C#.NET, QB and QAW are written in VB6. QAW is a COM wrapper of QA. In the calling code I create an Activation Context and load a manifest file. All works fine from the exe created with VB6, but not in debug mode in VB6 or in Excel's VBA. I have the full example in zip. Any ideas what it is that is different about the IDE call and why it doesn't work? Many Thx -- DM

• 'Step Into' is suddenly not working in Visual Studio

  All of a sudden, I have run into an issue where I cannot step into any code through debugging in Visual Studio. The step over works fine, but it refuses to step into (F11) any of my code. This was working before, now all of a sudden it does not. I've tried some things below, but I still had no success: Delete all bin files in every project in my solution, clean solution, re-build solution. Build projects in solution indivdualy Restart machine It an ASP.NET C# application consuming a WCF sevice locally. It is in debug mode. I have a breakpoint set on the page consuming the service. The breakpoint hits, but it will not step into the service code. The ASP.NET site and the service code is all in the same solution. This all of a sudden does not work, it did work before. How can I fix this problem? Adding a breakpoint to the service project I get a warning: Breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document. I deleted all the bin folders for all the projects and re-built them one by one. They all succeeded, but still I am getting the symbols won't load on any breakpoint I put into any project in the solution other than the ASP.NET project where the breakpoint works. I was able to debug step into all the projects before, this is an all of a sudden thing. Information from the output window.. • What is ExtJS philosophy? Single page application?

  I need to write my next project using ExtJs. It's a nice Javascript lib but I don't fully understand the idea behind it. Take the docs page for example: http://www.extjs.com/deploy/dev/docs/ Am I supposed to write my web applications with extjs like that? One page that should never be refreshed, and everything getting done by AJAX? How do you debug such applications if getting to the right place may take a lot of 'clicking' and working with it. You cannot fix the bug and hit refresh in the browser to see the results. Any suggestions?

  Hi, i've written this peace of code: var a=function(){ }; a.name="test"; a.prop="test2"; Now if i debug the code with the console: console.log(a.name); console.log(a.prop); In Firefox i get a.name="test" and a.prop="test2", while in Safari and Chrome i get a.prop="test2" but a.name="". It seems that there's no way to assign a "name" property on a function in Webkit browsers. Do you know why? But the most important thing is, do you know a workaround for that?

• How can I utilize or mimic Application OnStart in an HttpModule?

  We are trying to remove the global.asax from our many web applications in favor of HttpModules that are in a common code base. This works really well for many application events such as BeginRequest and PostAuthentication, but there is no Application Start event exposed in the HttpModule. I can think of a couple of smelly ways to overcome this deficit. • Setting application affinity in gdb

  Is there a simple way of setting the affinity of the application I'm debugging without locking gdb to the same core? The reason why I'm asking is that the application is running with real time priority and it needs to run on a single core. At the moment I use this command line taskset -c 3 gdbserver :1234 ./app.out but the application stops responding and freezes the gdb server, making debugging impossible. I suspect that the real time priority of the application prevents gdb from executing. If I start the application and then start gdb without affinity setting, then I can attach and debug the application without gdb freezing. Is there a simple way to start gdb and the application with different affinities? Or preferably: Is there a gdb command to set affinity of the child process?

• P/Invoke or C++/CLI for wrapping a C library

  Have a moderate size (40-odd function) C API that needs to be called from a C# project. The functions logically break up to form a few classes that will be API presented to the rest of the project. Are there any objective reasons to prefer P/Invoke or C++/CLI for the interoperability underneath that API, in terms of robustness, maintainability, deployment, ...? The issues I could think of that might be, but aren't problematic are: C++/CLI will require an separate assembly, the P/Invoke classes can be in the main assembly. (We've already got multiple assemblies and there'll be the C dlls anyway so not a major issue). Performance doesn't seem differ noticeable between the two methods. Issues that I'm not sure about are: My feeling is C++/CLI will be easier to debug if there's inter-op problem, is this true? Language familiarity enough people know C# and C++ but knowledge of details of C++/CLI are rarer here. Anything else?

  Sometimes I try a customization/command in my vimrc. Everything seens to be correct, but it just doesn't work. It's difficult to know what's happening when vim starts, and know which command failed or not, so it's really difficult to debug what can be causing a problem in my vimrc. It's a trial-error approach, which is time consuming and really a PITA. For example, I'm having problems with snipmate plugin in some files and just don't have a clue on how to discover the problem. Is there a "runtime log" when vim starts, telling which commands it executed, which ones failed and such? This would help me a lot.

• Classic ASP and MVC side-by-side, different projects?

  I've tried asking this in a few different ways, but let's give it another shot (as I've yet to receive an answer and this is driving me nuts!) I have a very large classic ASP 3.0 application (~350K lines) that I want to start migrating to ASP.NET MVC. I'd like to keep the old ASP files in a separate project from the MVC stuff. Ideas on how to debug these? Should I just dump the files in the same folder and create two different projects ( a WAP and an MVC app) that reference the relevant files and folders required by each? This should work, but does anyone have a better idea? I need the ability to migrate small parts of the application individually as this will probably take a year or two to complete.

• Django 404 pages not appearing?

  I want to add a 404 page on my Django site. I've created a template, 404.html, and saved it in the root of my /templates directory. I've also made sure that the from django.conf.urls.defaults import * line is included at the top of urls.py. I've set DEBUG to False. (I've been following these instructions.) However, if I try to go to a page that I know doesn't exist - whether a made-up URL or a view specifically designed to do get_object_or_404 - the 404 page doesn't appear: I just get Chrome's standard 'Oops! This link appears to be broken' page. Oddly, I also have a 500.html template in the same place and that is appearing just fine if I generate a 500 error. What might the problem be?

• django + xmppy: send a message to two recipients

  I'm trying to use xmpppy for sending jabber-messages from a django-website. This works entirely fine. However, the message only gets sent to the -first- of the recipients in the list. This happens when I run the following function from django, and also if I run it from an interactive python-shell. The weird part though, is that if I extract the -body- of the function and run that interactively, then all the recipients (there's just 2 at the moment) get the message. Also, I do know that the inner for-loop gets run the correct count times (2), because the print-statement does run twice, and return two different message-ids. How it effects total time taken. I am working on Compact framework. Update: In the Eventhandler I had given a MsgBox. When I removed the message box it is now showing time taken as 110,121,etc i.e. less that 500 milliseconds. If I put the Msgbox back in eventhandler it shows 1200,1400,etc i.e. more that a second. More surprised now.(Event is raised after the logging part)

• How do I display a field's hidden characters in the result of a query in Oracle?

  I have two rows that have a varchar column that are different according to a Java .equals(). I can't easily change or debug the Java code that's running against this particular database but I do have access to do queries directly against the database using SQLDeveloper. The fields look the same to me (they are street addresses with two lines separated by some new line or carriage feed/new line combo). Is there a way to see all of the hidden characters as the result of a query?I'd like to avoid having to use the ascii() function with substr() on each of the rows to figure out which hidden character is different. I'd also accept some query that shows me which character is the first difference between the two fields.

• Test for external undefined references in Linux

  Is there a built in linux utility that I can use to test a newly compiled shared library for external undefined references? Gcc seems to be intelligent enough to check for undefined symbols in my own binary, but if the symbol is a reference to another library gcc does not check at link time. Instead I only get the message when I try to link to my new library from another program. It seems a little silly to get undefined reference messages in a library when I am compiling a different project so I want to know if I can do a check on all references internal and external when I build the library not when I link to it. • Magento - blank lines being added to wsdl file

  I am trying to call the API but I keep getting a soap error that can't load the file. I found that the reason is there are about 3 blank lines at the top of the XML file that is returned. I found this by doing wget url. This use to work just fine, when I debug through the API controller the response or xml looks fine all the way through, I don't see any spaces at all. I have no idea what might be causing this. I don't think there is anything we modified that would do this.

  Hi! What might be reasons for running in the quoted exception upon a HQL select, when there is actually no NULL value in the respective field in the database? I've checked the database multiple times. I've manually submitted the query statement produced by hibernate (extracted from debug). Null values for the respective field are actually never returned. However, the corresponding row in the database is in fact nullable. Does hibernate care about the data base definition? I know, I could simple change the filed to a wrapper type, but we have a number of such fields in a legacy application and this only occurs upon a single query. I'm just wondering about the actual reason for getting this exception only with a single property. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

• Debugging maven junit tests with filtered resources?

  We are using filtered testResources in JUnit-tests that are usually executed by the maven surefire plugin. That is, the pom contains a section <build> <testResources> <testResource> <directory>src/test/resources</directory> <filtering>true</filtering> </testResource> </testResources> ... How can I run such JUnit-tests in the debugger? If I execute the tests in eclipse the tests fail since the test resources are not filtered. If the filtered test resources would be written somewhere into the target directory, I could just use this as an additional source path - but this is not the case. If I try to run the maven build in eclipse with Debug As / maven test , the build does not stop in the breakpoints. Any other ideas?

• Reading from the HTML DOM returns UTF-8 characters

  I have a contenteditable div where I'm reading individual characters and sending them off to a server (for more background this is similar to Google Wave where typing a character automatically sends it) I was using a plain old html textfield before and everything worked fine until I "upgraded" to a contenteditable div. My problem is that now the characters are in UTF-8 format, which is causing some weird problems on the server that I would rather not debug. It would be much easier to force everything to be ASCII on the client side. Is there any way to do this? I tried putting in a meta tag stating the html file is charset=ISO-8859-1, but it doesnt seem to work. Reading from the div tag still returns UTF-8 codes. (One example is when I press space I get the pair 0xC2 0xA0 which corresponds to a "non-breaking white space"
