  How do I get VLC to play on the second monitor on Windows? On Mac OS, there is an option in the video menu "fullscreen video device". Windows doesn't seem to have that option. There are various options in the DirectX settings that let you select a monitor, but they don't seem to work simply.

HP Desktop Machine: Microsoft Windows XP Intel (R) Core2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00 GHz 2.99 GHz, 1.94 GB of RAM Intel (R) Q45/Q43 Series Express Chipset (Inbuild) The CPU usage of the machine peaks 99% for 16 straems. After some discussion, we had decided to install external graphics card to reduce the CPU usage. So that, we have tried following graphics cards. NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 - 128 MB Radeon HD 4350 - 512 MB GDDR2 Redeon HD 4350 - 1GB DDR2 ASUS EAH 4350 Silent 1GB DDR2 But the performance wise no difference, even worst. So, what is the pupuse of these external graphics cards? Really it will reduce the CPU usage? What parameters have to check, if we want to reduce the CPU usage?   I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card?   Im using the following command, which works for most files, except what seems to be xvid encoded ones /usr/bin/ffmpeg -sameq -i file.avi -ss 00:01:00 -t 00:00:30 -ac 2 -r 25 -copyts output.avi So this should basically splice out 30 seconds of video + audio, starting from 1 minute mark. It does START encoding at the 00:01:00 mark but it goes all the way to the end of the file for some reason, ignoring that I want just 30 seconds. The output looks like this. The reason for I am looking for this is that I have a rather large monitor and doesn't use the whole screen when watching movies.

• Slow LAN transfer from 3rd party computer

  Hi Everyone, I've got an odd problem that I'm not really sure where to start the troubleshooting process. I have a 'server' with Windows Server 2008R2 (64-bit) installed and it has a couple of hard drives. If I Remote Desktop into the server and transfer files from one HD to the other, all it fine. If however, I use my workstation (Windows 7 64bit) and open up a shared resource on the server and transfer a file from one hard drive on the server to another HD on the server (not using Remote Desktop, just Windows explorer/Network places), the transfer crawls... It takes about 5mins to discover files/calculate the transfer and then starts transferring at speeds like 56KB/s - 200KB/s. Both machines have Marvel GigE network ports with a TrendNet 8-port green GigE switch. I've set Jumbo packets to 9K on both machines...

• Asus M4A79XTD-EVO / AMD Phenom II X4 965 Crashes / BSOD / Hangs / Restarts

  I'll try to be as concise as possible because I have a lot to say about my problem, but I'd rather say it when asked or when I feel it's necessary, just to make this initial reading clearer. For about a year and a half I have periods when my system has all the problems in the title (I'll use the word 'crash' for either one). I'll list some patterns and what I tried to do and what were the results, but the list is not exclusive: usually it crashes when a CPU-intensive operation is in progress, like a game or video encoding or HD movie rendering, but also sometimes crashes when I'm doing nothing after a first crash the system is very unstable and sometimes it crashes even during POST, or doesn't boot at all Some months ago I went to a local service (one that you just put your computer on the table and sit there with a guy and trying to figure out the problem, very rare these days) and they used OCCT and it crashed every time he changed some part to test it out (PSU, RAM, video card, HDD). The last one was the CPU. They changed the CPU and it didn't crash any more. Then when they put my CPU back, it also didn't crash. We figured that the trouble was the thermal paste (probably some 2 years old) because it was the only thing changed while testing. Up until 2 weeks ago, I haven't had any more problems. 2 weeks ago the problems reappeared. I changed again the thermal paste, put some Arctic Silver 5, and for about a week everything worked perfect (tried some games, video encoding, no more crashes). But again it started crashing in the same fashion as the first time. But now, instead, I figured out a very odd behaviour: when I start some of the apps above, in most cases it crashes if I start OCCT and turn on the CPU test, and run any of the programs above, it doesn't crash, even if the CPU is on 100% load (and 65-70 degrees Celsius temperature) if I shut down OCCT and continue using the programs, it crashes in a very short period of time (even if the CPU is on 5-10% load and 40 degrees) There are so many patterns and temporary solutions that I figured out in this year and a half period of time, that I can't include them all because I don't know which one are more relevant, but I'll happily provide any details you ask. My system is: CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 (3400 MHz - 125W) MB: ASUS M4A79XTD - EVO RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8 GB (2 x 4GB) CL8 1600MHz Video: HIS Radeon HD5770 1GB PSU: Corsair 750W HDD: Western Digital 1TB OS: Win 7 Enterprise 64 BIT (also tried with Windows Server 2008 R2 Trial and Win XP)

• Switch monitor configurations on Windows 7

  I use one of my PCs for flight simulation as well as for home theater. In case one it has 2 monitors attached, and in case 2 (home theater) a HD TV is being used. All 3 monitors are attached at the same time to the graphics card. How could it best switch best between different configurations. In case 1 I'd like to have the configuration with monitor 1/2, alternatively I'd like quickly to switch to another config only with the HD TV as primary screen. A similar question has been asked 6 months back with no full solution yet, so I come up with it again. The comment there of Darius (Windows + P key) is the best so far.

• How to see whats taking up space on your hard drive

  Im thinking of switching to one of the macbook pro retinas with a 256gb ssd, im making the move from a 512gb hd, which at the moment is split into a 60bg windows partition (which i dont think im going to have on my new machine) and a 440gb main partition of the main partition ive got 140gb free. So all in if i disregard the 60gb windows part ive got about 200gb free so im using 300gb, which is still a bit to much, ive had this machine 4/5 yrs so its likely to be clogged with files that i no longer need, is there a tool that i can use to view my current hd and see whats taking up the most room, so i can begin to see where i can cut down ? just for a bit of background my current machine runs osx.

• Random Computer Crashes

  Ok, here's a wierd one for you all. Occasionally my PC here at work will crash in a very peculiar way. My dual monitors will suddenly go blank as if there is no longer a video signal, the USB mouse light will go dark and mouse stays unresponsive, the keyboard lights will not change status when the appropriate keys are pressed (Num/Caps/Scoll Lock). The CD Tray WILL open and close. But the computer will not respond to a ping request. For all intents & purposes it's as if the computer is off, except it wasn't intentional by me. The power light and internal fans are still on and I've now lost any unsaved work. Now here's where it gets wierd. This PC is part of a batch of PC's we got from a local vendor who does our initial system builds. Mine, and 6 other co-workers PCs all have the same issue. Originally we thought it was a bad combination of hardware, but through trial and error the only thing we haven't eliminated are the OS, Mobo & CPU. The problem was so bad for some of them that they ended up going back to their 5 year old dinosaurs in order to get some work done, for me the problem isn't as bad, maybe once every other day or so, but still enough to bite me in the ass if I've forgotten my ritualistic pressing of CTRL-S every 1-5 minutes. In this case we've tried two different video cards, two different power supplies, two different memory configurations, running on a UPS/not on UPS, updating/rolling back video drivers, three different bios revisions. The only things we haven't swapped are the mobo & cpu, mainly because a new mobo means a new Hardware Abstraction Layer, ie re-install of windows and there's alot of other software on this PC that takes forever to reload by hand. There was a base image that our systems team created with all the drivers installed and the basic setup of software our company uses, but they then must customize the setup for us programmers so it takes a while to get a new configuration up and going. I'm a programmer by day and am usually pretty good at diagnosing computer problems whether through trial and error or not. We've pretty much exhausted all the ideas we can think of here, short of a new mobo/cpu. Was hoping someone out there might have anything else we can try.. Relevant Parts: OS: XP Pro 32-bit Motherboard: Intel DG41RQ CPU: Intel Core-2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66GHz Current BIOS Version/Date Intel Corp. • Ubuntu 10.10: getting appropiate monitor resolution for lcd hdtv

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 version, with Nvidia 9800 GT, installed 270.41.06 Nvidia drivers following this guide. I have a LG42LH30FR LCD TV connected with the dvi link - RGB PC input I'm able to get 1024x768 resolution without overscan (I can get 1080i = 1366x768 but there is a lot of hidden screen space to the right and I don't know what to do about it). I want to get full HD I can get full HD (1080p = 1920x1080) on Windows XP 64-bit with custom resolution created with Nvidia Control Panel, from reading over xorg.conf configurations it seems I need to add a certain modeling to the monitor configuration, but I don't know where to get the appropriate options for this task any suggestions?

• Turn Windows 7 desktop into grayscale

  Is there a universal way to turn Windows 7 Aero desktop, all windows, etc into grayscale? I had an option to do this in Intel video drivers on my old laptop, now I have NVIDIA and don't know how to replicate this effect. There might be a shader or filter that would cause Aero to render stuff into grayscale, but I was unable to find anything. Or must it be explicitly supported by video driver as a bonus?

• Completely clean previous Radeon drivers on Windows 7 64bit

  Recently I replaced my old Radeon HD 2600XT to Radeon HD 6770 from MSI. I had strange problem that after installing the newest Radeon drivers they exist only until first reboot. After reboot my new card is recognized as an old 2600. I tried to unintall ATI/AMD software completetely from Programs/Features, then reboot, then untinstall driver from device manager, then reboot, then system showed that display driver is regular VGA (and oldschool 640x480 resolutions). Then to be double sure I executed DriverCleaner3 and Driver sweeper. After the restart I installed the newest drivers from amd site but after restarting the system recognizes card as 2600. I'm completely lost. Perhaps Win7 64bit caches somewhere drivers? Are there any issues regarding drivers-shadowing or 32/64 mirroring? Reinstalling the system is not an option.

  I have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card. Almost every new linux distribution seems to have an issue with it, when i install the drivers. Working without utilizing the graphics card leaves me so unproductive. So i made a plan to use older versions of linux, any distribution suitable as a desktop distribution. UPDATE: The kind of problems that i am facing are, 1) After installing drivers the system boots and hangs, 2) There are unusual lines over the screen 3) After upgrade system doesn't start properly(hangs the usual old way) The kind of answers i am looking for is, distribution X(the newer the version the better) doesn't have the above problem after installing drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card. • Cheap machine with Xen to have more than one personal dev servers with RAID option?

  I do not have a lot of money so when I need a personal dev servers I decided I will use Xen on one machine to run various OS's. Although, I really like Dell Zino (http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops/inspiron-zino-hd/pd.aspx?refid=inspiron-zino-hd&cs=19&s=dhs) as a very economical and compact PC which can be scaled to 8GB of RAM, I do not know how to have a RAID setup, for the backup. Is there an economical way to add a RAID setup to Dell Zino or I would have to invest in a proper box for that?   I am trying to play Netflix videos (which only play via Silverlight), but they play choppy because Silverlight's hardware-accelerated playback is disabled. (video playback on WMP11 and VLC is flawless, so I know beyond certainty that my built-in video card's hardware is perfectly capable of hardware-accelerated playback) I have the latest & greatest Silverlight version: 5.1.10411.0 And I tried to "un-grey-it-out" via the Registry's GPUVideoDecodeEnabled and UpdateMode, but that didn't help. Is there any way to "un-grey-it-out"?

  After some struggle, I finally managed to set up Hyper-V 2008 R2 on our server. So I connected to it using the Hyper-V Manager from a Windows 7 client and used the "New Virtual Machine Wizard". I set up a 350GB virtual hard disk. So I hit the "finish" button and the Hyper-V manager has been working for 24hours now, showing merely a dialog "Creating Disk". A console on the Hyper-V still reports 99.9% free space on the HD, but the machines HD LED flashes from time to time (making a rather idle impression, it's not flashing frenetically). Does this usually take this long? Is there a way to find out whether it's still working or just idling? Should I repeat the process? Guides on the net tell me to be patient, but 1d seems a bit extreme!?

• Chipset GPU causes a massive slowdown

  My AMD Radeon HD 7700 recently broke (fan stopped working and GPU overheated), and now I'm running on internal chipset graphics, and it causes a massive slowdown of the whole PC. I've changed the graphics memory from 32MB (minimum) to 256MB (highest), and it hasn't made any difference whatsoever. I'm using Windows Aero, and disabling it should have made a small difference, but it didn't; the whole PC is still slow. I know that it's not the computer build, because I built it myself, and it was a lot faster when it had the AMD Radeon HD 7700 in it, which is the reason why I believe it's the internal chipset graphics that are causing the problem. Is this behavior normal? I don't have the cash right now to go out and buy a new dedicated GPU. I'm using an ASRock N68C-GS FX motherboard with an AMD FX 4100 (overclocked to 4.3GHZ), with 4GB RAM. The overclock was an attempt to resolve this issue, and it isn't related to this issue that the integrated graphics is causing a slowdown.

  We bought several 3T SAS hard disks want to use with our Dell R710 server. But we found our R710 can't recognize the 3T hd, and then we dig out the raid card is PERC 6i which doesn't support it. Contacted with Dell that H700 and H800 support 3T hd, thought we can buy a H700 , but the SAS cable is not available in the market right now. And it seems very hard for us to change the raid card, also no suitable tools to tease the special screws. So I want to know if any other method to use these 3T hds instead of putting them in the warehouse? Can I low formatting it to 2TB, and plug it into Dell R710 to use? Or a SAS to USB adapter to use it as USB external disk? I just want to use them by Dell R710 even external.
