  • MySQL index cardinality - performance vs storage efficiency

    Say you have a MySQL 5.0 MyISAM table with 100 million rows, with one index (other than primary key) on two integer columns. From my admittedly poor understanding of B-tree structure, I believe that a lower cardinality means the storage efficiency of the index is better, because there are less parent nodes. Whereas a higher cardinality means less efficient storage, but faster read performance, because it has to navigate through less branches to get to whatever data it is looking for to narrow down the rows for the query. (Note - by "low" vs "high", I don't mean e.g. 1 million vs 99 million for a 100 million row table. I mean more like 90 million vs 95 million) Is my understanding correct?     Hi All, In WPF4.0, I have a class that contains other class types as properties (combining multiple data types for display). Something like: public partial class Owner { public string OwnerName { get; set; } public int OwnerId { get; set; } } partial class ForDisplay { public Owner OwnerData { get; set; } public int Credit { get; set; } } In my window, I have an ItemsControl with the following (clipped for clarity): <ItemsControl ItemsSource={Binding}> <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <local:MyDisplayControl OwnerName={Binding OwnerData.OwnerName} Credit={Binding Credit} /> </DataTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> </ItemsControl> I then get a collection of display information from the data layer, and set the DataContext of the ItemsControl to this collection. The "Credit" property gets displayed correctly, but the OwnerName property does not. Instead, I get a binding error: Error 40: BindingExpression path error: 'OwnerName' property not found on 'object' ''ForDisplay' (HashCode=449124874)'. BindingExpression:Path=OwnerName; DataItem='ForDisplay' (HashCode=449124874); target element is 'TextBlock' (Name=txtOwnerName'); target property is 'Text' (type 'String') I don't understand why this is attempting to look for the OwnerName property in the ForDisplay class, rather than in the Owner class from the ForDisplay OwnerData property. Edit It appears that it has something to do with using the custom control.   • Cufon delay in WordPress, Mac/Safari/FF...

    Using cufon 'manually' not the plugin.... I have a delay on many page loads in Safari and FF on the Cufon enabled headings.... http://www.budewebdesign.com/haf Tried moving Cufon higher up (eg before wp_head() and the plugin code that calls, without any real effect. Some pages no problem but others just a long enough delay to be annoying. I'm not really keen on hiding the headings before the page load completes as is suggested elsewhere. If it loads without delay some of the time, I wonder if it can be made to 'all' of the time :) My connection speed is good. Thanks for any ideas on this.

    I wondered if there is a programming language which compiles to machine code/binary (not bytecode then executed by a VM, that's something completely different when considering typing) that features dynamic and/or weak typing, e.g: Think of a compiled language where: Variables don't need to be declared Variables can be created doing runtime Functions can return values of different types Questions: Is there such a programming language? (Why) not? I think that a dynamically yet strong typed, compiled language would really sense, but is it possible?

  • How can Core Data store an NSData?

    The documentation says, that core data properties can only store NSString, NSNumber and NSDate types. However, a lot of Core Data users claim Core Data could also store an NSData type. But I wasn't able to see that in the documentation, although the Xcode Data Modeler allows to choose a data type called "binary" (which seems to be NSData). Did I miss something? Is there a hidden place in the documentation that indeed lists NSData for binary stuff?

    We are wanting to add support for fingerprint authentication in a .Net 3.5 application. We currently are only using the sdk from Griaule. But this only supports like 5 usb plug-and-play devices. We are wanting to support most readers included with laptops, tablets, etc. Is there a universal way to support many devices? I know there is a new standard starting with Windows 7, but we want to support XP and higher. Is there even a .Net SDK out there for UPEK or Authentec devices? Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

  • NoSQL DB for .Net document-based database (ECM)

    I'm halfway through coding a basic multi-tenant SaaS ECM solution. Each client has it's own instance of the database / datastore, but the .Net app is single instance. The documents are pretty much read only (i.e. an image archive of tiffs or PDFs) I've used MSSQL so far, but then started thinking this might be viable in a NoSQL DB (e.g. MongoDB, CouchDB). The basic premise is that it stores documents, each with their own particular indexes. Each tenant can have multiple document types. e.g. One tenant might have an invoice type, which has Customer ID, Invoice Number and Invoice Date. Another tenant might have an application form, which has Member Number, Application Number, Member Name, and Application Date. So far I've used the old method which Sharepoint (used?) to use, and created a document table which has int_field_1, int_field_2, date_field_1, date_field_2, etc. Then, I've got a "mapping" table which stores the customer specific index name, and the database field that will map to. I've avoided the key-value pair model in the DB due to volume of documents. This way, we can support multiple document types in the one table, and get reasonably high performance out of it, and allow for custom document type searches (i.e. user selects a document type, then they're presented with a list of search fields). However, a NoSQL DB might make this a lot simpler, as I don't need to worry about denormalizing the document. However, I've just got concerns about the rest of the data around a document. We store an "action history" against the document. This tracks views, whether someone emails the document from within the system, and other "future" functionality (e.g. faxing). We have control over the document load process, so we can manipulate the data however it needs to be to get it in the document store (e.g. assign unique IDs). Users will not be adding in their own documents, so we shouldn't need to worry about ACID compliance, as the documents are relatively static. So, my questions I guess : Is a NoSQL DB a good fit Is MongoDB the best for Asp.Net (I saw Raven and Velocity, but they're still kinda beta) Can I store a key for each document, and then store the action history in a MSSQL DB with this key? I don't need to do joins, it would be if a person clicks "View History" against a document. How would performance compare between the two (NoSQL DB vs denormalized "document" table) Volumes would be up to 200,000 new documents per month for a single tenant. My current scaling plan with the SQL DB involves moving the SQL DB into a cluster when certain thresholds are reached, and then reviewing partitioning and indexing structures.

Of course the AsDoc compiler complains that those classes are not defined anywhere. Does anyone know how to make it ignore these class types?

  • Interfacing my application with existing authentication systems

    I'm writing a web based application that will have its own authorization/authentication mechanism (traditional cookie/session based user/pass). However, depending on the organization that licenses the software, I want them to be able to plug in their own existing internal authentication system as a way to replace mine. Ideally, they'd have to run as little code as possible on their end; I'm trying to make this a mostly hosted service. I'm aware of the existence of OAuth, but don't entirely understand how I would go about implementing the system at a higher level. Any tips would be appreciated.

  • Custom Annotation not showing all

    Okay, i have a number of pins on the mapkit. These pins showing different types of attractions. (E.g Parks, Farms and etc) I want to add custom images for these different types of pin. Parks have a park image and vice versa. However, when i added in, not all the images are showing successfully. For example, in parks, it should have 5 pins, but the image only came up in 2 pins, whereas other 3 is in default red pins. But if i used colours to differentiate them. For example, [pinsetPinColor:MKPinAnnotationColorGreen]; It works! Anyone knows what is the problem? Relevant codes below.   • Tomcat 5.5, Is there a max upload speed per request?

    I am having an issue when uploading files to tomcat. It seems that tomcat (or something else?) will not handle the upload as fast as I can send it. When uploading multiple files concurrently I can max out my local connection upload speed (2.1MB/s). However, when uploading only one file at a time, no matter how small or large the file, the upload will max out around 400KB/s. I have tried setting the appReadBufSize higher but it makes no difference. Is there something else that would be limiting the upload speed per request? Proxy Server: CentOS 4 Apache 2 SSL Tomcat Server: CentOS 4 Tomcat 5.5.25 (Tomcat Native Library Is Installed) Java 6 Thanks! Matt

  • Math algorithm question

    I'm not sure if this can be done without some determining factor....but wanted to see if someone knew of a way to do this. I want to create a shifting scale for numbers. Let's say I have the number 26000. I want the outcome of this algorithm to be 6500; or 25% of the original number. But if I have the number 5000, I want the outcome to be 2500; or 50% of the original number. The percentages don't have to be exact, this is just an example. I just want to have like a sine wave sort of thing. As the input number gets higher, the output number is a lower percentage of the input. Does that make sense?

  • Convert List of one type to Array of another type using Dozer

    I'm wondering how to convert a List of one type to an array of another type in Java using Dozer. The two types have all the same property names/types. CollectionUtils.convertListToArray(listOfA, B.class) Neither are working for me, can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? The mapper.map function works fine if I create two wrapper classes, one containing a List and the other a b[].   • [.NET] Line break in ListView work in Vista/7 but not in XP

    hi, I've got problem. I'm using ListView to show some data and I need to make two lines in one row. I've found solution to make row higher by adding ImageList with specified height and then I add Environment.NewLine to my text. It works in Vista and 7 but in XP instead of new line there are shown squares. I've been trying to add "\n" "\r\n" and ASCII char 10 but ther were still squares! After few days I still don't know what's wrong and I need your help.
