• How to avoid trailing spaces when you copy something from terminal?

  I often copy a code snippet from a SSH terminal session where i'm logged in to some remote server and have a file opened in vim, for example to paste it here into an answer at SO. It frequently happens, that the code is padded with trailing spaces to match the terminal width. Whereas i've seen this on both, my Ubuntu and Windows machines (using putty) i think, it doesn't happen always. I was not able to figure out when it happens, though. So i wonder how i can avoid those trailing spaces which i have to remove manually all the time in the textarea, where i copy it to. Note, that the files do not have trailing spaces on the server! It only happens if i select and copy some text.

• ASP NET forms Authorization: how to reduce duration?

  I've got a web page which is implementing cookie based ASPNET Forms Authentication. Once the user has logged in the page, he can edit some information using a form which is created using a partialview and returned to him as a dialog for editing. The action linked to the partial view is decorated as follows: [HttpGet] [OutputCache(Duration = 0, VaryByParam = "None")] [Authorize(Roles = "test")] public ActionResult changeTripInfo(int tripID, bool ovride=false) { ... } The problem i am experiencing is the latency between the request and the time when the dialog is shown to the user: time ranges between 800 and 1100 ms which is not justified by the complexity of the form. Investigating with Glimpse turns out that the time to process the AuthorizeAttribute (see snip) sums up to at least 650 ms which is troubling me. Looking at the Sql server log, the call which checks the user roles takes, as expected, virtually nothing (duration 0). How can I reduce this time? Am I missing some optimization?

  I have a project that depends upon some other binaries to be downloaded from web at install time.For this what i do is: if ( file-present-in-src/) # skip that file else # use wget to download the file The problem with this approach is that when I interrupt a download in middle, and do invoke the script next time, the partially downloaded file is also skipped (which is not desired), also I want wget to resume the download of the partially downloaded file. How should I go about it: Possible Solutions I could think of: Let the file to be downloaded to some file say download_tmp. Copy to original file if successful. Handle SIG{'INT'} to write proper cleanup code. But none of these could help resume the partial file download, Any insights?

• Is it possible to span a desktop background across 2 monitors, with a different background on a third?

  In Windows 8 it's now possible to span a desktop background across multiple monitors, by selecting "span" from the desktop background options. This option spans the image across all of the monitors you have connected. What I'd like to do is span an image across 2 of my 3 monitors, while putting a different background on the third monitor. I figured out how to set a different background for each monitor individually (right-click image, set for monitor n), but can't figure out how to mix and match with spanning. Is there some way to span images across some (but not all) monitors in Windows 8?

• Linux QoS (Skype / BitTorent / SIP / HTTP priority)

  We are configuring a linux box that will act as internet gateway for an office of 30-50 computers. We are using iptables/HTB for traffic shaping. Is there a way to match traffic on L7 level? It's easy to identify traffic by TCP/UDP ports (like SIP and HTTP). But what if we are dealing with Skype & BitTorent? It was surprise for me that there is no powerful and matured sulution for tasks like this. I found only l7-filter (http://l7-filter.clearfoundation.com/) patch for the Linux kernel, but it's no longer supported (it seems to). Moreover it couldn't be compiled with modern Linux kernels. The only option I found was to use a Cisco router. Are there other ways to identify and shape Skype and Bittorent traffic?

• Using database default values with Linq to SQL codewise

  I am using Dynamic Data with linq to SQL and SQL Server 2008. I have a GUID column that gets his value from the default value with newguid(). When I set IsDbGenerated to true in the designer it works like a charm. But when I renew table this property is set back to false again. So I added it to the metadata. For some reason it's not being pickup, "00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000" is being inserted in database. The displayname and readonly change are being pick up. What am I missing? • How to combine wildcards and spaces (quotes) in an Windows command?

  I want to remove directories of the following format: C:\Program Files\FogBugz\Plugins\cache\[email protected]_NN NN is a number, so I want to use a wildcard (this is part of a post-build step in Visual Studio). The problem is that I need to combine quotes around the path name (for the space in Program Files) with a wildcard to match the end of the path. I already found out that rd is the remove command that accepts wildcards, but where do I put the quotes? I have tried no ending quote (works for dir), ...example.com*", ...example.com"*, ...example.com_??", ...cache\"[email protected]*, ...cache"\[email protected]*, but none of them work. (How many commands to remove a file/directory are there in Windows anyway? And why do they all differ in capabilities?)

• Creating an Exchange mail user

  With Windows 2003 and Exchange 2003, I'm trying to set up a mail user. I've tried to create them with the New User procedure avaliable when right clicking the "My server"/Users and "My server"/MyBusiness/Users/SBSUsers folders but then I can't read its mail. I telnet my server to check the accounts at the pop3 port and when I pass it the user and the pass, I just get "-ERR Unspecified error." Any ideas of what I'm doing wrong? I can access without problems the users created by my predecessor, and I've compared my user to match his.

• Firewall blocks outgoing email

  On my Debian server running a Django website, I have an error when I need to send an email. The error received is Exception Type: gaierror Exception Value: [Errno -2] Name or service not known Exception Location: /usr/lib/python2.6/socket.py in create_connection, line 547 You can see the full error log here. After testing, it seems it is my firewall that blocks the request. You can see my iptable file (/etc/init.d/firewall). I think the problem comes from the two commented lines that were supposed to accepts all established connections. When I uncomment them, I have an error iptables: No chain/target/match by that name. • Lookups targeting merged cells - only returning value for first row

  I have a master worksheet which contains data that I wish to link to another 'summary' sheet using a lookup. However, some of the cells whose data I wish to include in the summary sheet are merged across two or more adjacent rows. To be clear, the 'primary' column A that I am using in my formula in order to identify the target row does not contain merged cells, but the column from which I wish to return a value does. I have tried VLOOKUP and INDEX+MATCH. The problem is that the data is only returned for the first row's key, and the others return zero (as though the cell in the target column were blank, where actually it is merged). I have tried inelegant ways around this, e.g. using IF statements to try to find the top row of the merged cell. However, these don't work well if the order of values in the summary sheet is different from that in the master sheet, as well as being messy. Can this be done?

• Get Image Source URLs from a Different Page Using JS

  Everyone: I'm trying to grab the source URLs of images from one page and use them in some JavaScript in another page. I know how to pull in images using JQuery .load(). However, rather than load all the images and display them on the page, I want to just grab the source URLs so I can use them in a JS array. Page 1 is just a page with images: <html> <head> </head> <body> <img id="image0" src="image0.jpg" /> <img id="image1" src="image1.jpg" /> <img id="image2" src="image2.jpg" /> <img id="image3" src="image3.jpg" /> </body> </html> Page 2 contains my JS. (Please note that the end goal is to load images into an array, randomize them, and using cookies, show a new image on page load every 10 seconds. All this is working. However, rather than hard code the image paths into my javascript as shown below, I'd prefer to take the paths from Page 1 based on their IDs. • Conditional cPanel Forwarder

  We have many clients on a cPanel server, some of which also have SSL certificates setup. Each year when the renewals are sent to webmaster@ their domain we would like a copy of those emails so we can install the SSL certifciate for them and issue invoices etc. So I'm wondering if there is a way we can selectively or conditionally forward certain emails if they match certain rules? (in cPanel) I'm thinking: If an email is sent to "webmaster@domain" and the subject contains "ssl", then forward to "[email protected]". Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Wireblue

  I want to achieve the following with postfix: Almost all outgoing emails shall be sent via a relayhost, configured in main.cf with relayhost = my.mailserver There's one specific email address ([email protected]) for which I want the email to be delivered locally. I set up a local account on the machine to match the email address and added "mydomain.com" to the mydestination property in main.cf. Then of course postfix tries to deliver every email to @mydomain.com locally and bounces them because the respective user doesn't exist. Question http://serverfault.com/questions/149453/hybrid-gmail-mx-postfix-for-local-accounts seems to be somewhat related (though more complicated).

  I'm trying to create a custom control and need to raise an event from it. The idea is to raise an event at the end of the click event (OnAfterClick). I found one or two tutorials on doing this, but am clearly missing a step somewhere; I have the following. Now how do I make sure that any changes in the datagrid is written back to the database?   I have an IPSec VPN on my Windows 7 machine (all using the native Windows 7 gateway). The host I am connecting to has different ISAKMP "Phase 1" and "Phase 2" IP addresses. As I understand, the Phase 1 address is that of the IPsec endpoint, to which I can connect just fine. The Phase 2 address is found in their "crypto map", and the addresses need to match. At the moment, both my Phase 1 and Phase 2 addresses are configured the same. On my side, I get the error "Error 791: The L2TP connection attempt failed because security policy for the connection was not found" How can I configure the Phase 2 IP address for my Windows 7 IPSec VPN to be different to the IPSec endpoint address?

  Do the search requests made by the users influence the Google crawlers "attraction" by this keyword? Let's say Google has some hits on a specific keyword in the search index. And now I search for exactly this keyword. Will the Google crawlers react to the search and keep looking more intense for pages that could match this keyword? A reason why this could be important: Privacy when searching yourself. Assume you just want to know how much Google (and thus other people) can find out about you. If now any (statistical) additional search for your name trigger the crawlers even one step harder to find even more about you, it would have the negative effect that you would actually be found easier in the future, even though you had the intention and hope to find out how few Google finds about you. It's a bit like the dillema in quantum mechanis: Does observing the system automatically change the system?

• How to make RHEL have persistent local hdd name?

  I have 2 identical Dell R720 servers running identical Oracle Enterprise Linux(RHEL)6.4. Both servers (supposedly) configured in exactly the same way. However, one of the servers is behaving differently. Every other reboot its local HDD name(and related partitions) flip from /dev/sda to /dev/sdj. This is problematic because both servers are configured for multipathd, and if this flip happens their config does not match and Oracle DB(or its clusterware) complains that nodes are not configured identically. Why does one server has a consistent device names while the other server keeps flipping back and forth? How can I make local hdd to consistently be /dev/sda? I suspect this might have something to do with udev but I'm not sure.
