  • As a CS major, should I take more EE courses?

    - by fakeit
I have taken enough cs courses to know that I'm not interested in hardware. I'm much more interested in programing for the web. Now, I'm nearing the end of my degree, and I'm presented with the option to take some higher level EE courses than the intro I took freshman year. Are there any real-world-job-boosting reasons I should take more EE course? Any courses in particular that people think would be helpful?

  • How effecient is a details table?

    - by Jeffrey Lott
At my job, we have pseudo-standard of creating one table to hold the "standard" information for an entity, and a second table, named like 'TableNameDetails', which holds optional data elements. On average, for every row in the main table will have about 8-10 detail rows in it. My question is: What kind of performance impacts does this have over adding these details as additional nullable columns on the main table?

  • More HTTP verbs with AS3?

    - by tedw4rd
I'm developing a social game in Flash with a team of developers. Our server-side guy has developed a really slick RESTful API for the Flash client to talk to. A lot of the client-server interactions involve adding and removing objects from a persistent world, so the API makes extensive use of the PUT and DELETE verbs. The problem is, the URLRequest object in AS3 only supports the GET and POST verbs. We're on a strict schedule, and we'd really rather not have to rewrite the whole API to just use GET and POST. Has anyone come up with a good way to get Flash to send other verbs?

  • C# code cleaning/auditing tool (stand-alone outside of the IDE).

    - by lucidquiet
Does anyone know of a stand-alone tool for C# code cleaning/auditing that can run outside of Visual Studio IDE so as to be part of a build. Or if that isn't possible can someone provide some guidance as to how to make Visual Studio part of a build process -- by that I mean it would be nice to run the IDE's Sort and Remove unused using statements on all files as part of the build, but even better would be an exe that can read the .sln, or .csproj and do the job as part of build system. Thanks, L-

  • Is there a way to force CoreImage to use the GPU?

    - by NSSplendid
We are having the following problem: a series of Core Image filters runs constantly in our program. When evaluating on my Macbook Pro, Core Image decides to schedule all graphics computation on the GPU, as expected. When using a MacPro, however, CI uses the CPUs! This is a problem, as we need them for other processing. [1] The question now is: Can one tell CI to run exclusively on the GPU? [1] Both hardware sets are of the newest kind. The MacPro has 8 Cores.

  • JIRA or Trac?

    - by seedhead
I used Atlassian JIRA for bug and issue tracking at my last job. I absolutely loved it and it was particularly easy on the eyes. My present company is using Trac instead, and while it does do all the basics, I am finding it really lacking, particularly with the inability to easily setup multiple projects and link issues. Oh, and the fact that it uses SQLLite is a bit of an issue for me to. Does anyone have any other good reasons to switch?

  • SSRS - rsAccessDenied error

    - by user1718857
I have created one SSRS text report. I have built and deployed it successfully. I am also able to view it from the report manager succesfully. I am a local admin on windows server but not on SQL Server. Issue :- I am trying to schedule a report to run on a daily basis. When I go to Data sources to store my windows id credentials, it's not allowing me to do so throwing below error. The permissions granted to user 'app\abcid' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied) Things I have tried :- Added my windows domain id to report manager and given all roles that are there still no success. Added server to the trusted sites in the IE, still no success.

  • Scheduler for asp.net ?

    - by user359706
Is there a schedule control in asp.net. What I need: column display: users Rows display : months and days. On clicking cell will open a popup In popup we can : - select a status in a dropdownList, - if the status is "be close" = two calendars ( date start and end) - then apply a color for the selected period. I know I would not find an exact need control, but I want a component that would be closest. Somethink like http://www.daypilot.org/ or http://www.codeproject.com/KB/webforms/EventCalendarControl.aspx. hoping to be clearly understandable. thank you for your help will be precious to me.

  • In C# is there a thread scheduler for long running threads?

    - by LogicMagic
Hi, Our scenario is a network scanner. It connects to a set of hosts and scans them in parallel for a while using low priority background threads. I want to be able to schedule lots of work but only have any given say ten or whatever number of hosts scanned in parallel. Even if I create my own threads, the many callbacks and other asynchronous goodness uses the ThreadPool and I end up running out of resources. I should look at MonoTorrent... If I use THE ThreadPool, can I limit my application to some number that will leave enough for the rest of the application to Run smoothly? Is there a threadpool that I can initialize to n long lived threads?

  • Where to store common application settings

    - by Chris
I want to move my application settings out of XAML and into a config file. For example, ToolTips and Content strings for Buttons/CheckBoxes and Labels. Is this the job of a ResourceDictionary, or should I use the App.Config or Settings.settings file? The ToolTips and Content strings are not really per user, they are more Application wide and may change if the UI is internationalized. Thanks!

  • rails separate login for an api

    - by Squadrons
I have a very simple api that is part of a rails app that requires logging in. I just need a way to make the api part accessible with a simple form that allows the user to enter parameters like a key (just a simple one stored in the DB, no OAuth or anything), a userId to find and return a user via json, and maybe some other parameters like asking for their schedule. How can I keep this seperate from the rest of the app, making it a public facing form that will grant access only to the api? Thanks.

  • Parsing complicated query parameters

    - by Will
My Python server receives jobs that contain a list of the items to act against, rather like a search query term; an example input: (Customer:24 OR Customer:24 OR (Group:NW NOT Customer:26)) To complicate matters, customers can join and leave groups at any time, and the job should be updated live when this happens. How is best to parse, apply and store (in my RDBMS) this kind of list of constraints?

  • ThreadQueue problems in "Accelerated C# 2008"

    - by Singlet
    Example for threading queue book "Accelerated C# 2008" (CrudeThreadPool class) not work correctly. If I insert long job in WorkFunction() on 2-processor machine executing for next task don't run before first is over. How to solve this problem? I want to load the processor to 100 percent public class CrudeThreadPool { static readonly int MAX_WORK_THREADS = 4; static readonly int WAIT_TIMEOUT = 2000; public delegate void WorkDelegate(); public CrudeThreadPool() { stop = 0; workLock = new Object(); workQueue = new Queue(); threads = new Thread[ MAX_WORK_THREADS ]; for( int i = 0; i < MAX_WORK_THREADS; ++i ) { threads[i] = new Thread( new ThreadStart(this.ThreadFunc) ); threads[i].Start(); } } private void ThreadFunc() { lock( workLock ) { int shouldStop = 0; do { shouldStop = Interlocked.Exchange( ref stop, stop ); if( shouldStop == 0 ) { WorkDelegate workItem = null; if( Monitor.Wait(workLock, WAIT_TIMEOUT) ) { // Process the item on the front of the queue lock( workQueue ) { workItem =(WorkDelegate) workQueue.Dequeue(); } workItem(); } } } while( shouldStop == 0 ); } } public void SubmitWorkItem( WorkDelegate item ) { lock( workLock ) { lock( workQueue ) { workQueue.Enqueue( item ); } Monitor.Pulse( workLock ); } } public void Shutdown() { Interlocked.Exchange( ref stop, 1 ); } private Queue workQueue; private Object workLock; private Thread[] threads; private int stop; } public class EntryPoint { static void WorkFunction() { Console.WriteLine( "WorkFunction() called on Thread {0}",Thread.CurrentThread.GetHashCode() ); //some long job double s = 0; for (int i = 0; i < 100000000; i++) s += Math.Sin(i); } static void Main() { CrudeThreadPool pool = new CrudeThreadPool(); for( int i = 0; i < 10; ++i ) { pool.SubmitWorkItem( new CrudeThreadPool.WorkDelegate( EntryPoint.WorkFunction) ); } pool.Shutdown(); } }

  • Are there any scripts to synchronize sites?

    - by Matrym
I've just set up a fail-over DNS to switch the site to a second host if the first is down. This is great for showing an old / archived version of the site, but I suspect maintenance is going to be a real pain. I moved the files over with rsync in the first place. Is this the kinda thing that could be run as a cron job, automatically moving over newer files?
