• Mapview on tablet: How can I center the map with an offset?

  Hint: Here is a similar post with HTML. In the current tablet implementation of my app, I have a fullscreen MapView with some informations displayed in a RelativeLayout on a left panel, like this: (My layout is quite trivial, and I guess there is no need to post it for readability) The problem comes when I want to center the map on a specific point... If I use this code: mapController.setCenter(point); I will of course get the point in the center of the screen and not in the center of the empty area. I have really no idea where I could start to turn the offset of the left panel into map coordinates... Thanks a lot for any help or suggestion

• javascript call url from different domain

  Hi, I want to post some data via javascript to another domain. Something like: http://www.othersite.com/submitfunnyname?name=blah The other site (othersite.com) has a REST interface that you can call (well actually this is a get example) to submit a funny name to them. Can I do this already with javascript? I'm a little confused on this - I know if that service wants to return some data, I'd need to use something like JSON-P - even though here I'm submitting some data, I guess the service will return some message structure letting me know the result, so it would have to be JSON-P, right? • Browser compatibility; Before or after uploading website to server?

  I am on the stage where I need to make my website cross-browser compatible. I need tips on how to get started. I have developed my website on firefox, so it works great with firefox. I guess I have to download a couple of versions of all major browsers now, right? Then just test each browser one by one? Should I do this before uploading the entire website onto a server or afterwards? All tips and SW which makes this easier is appreciated. BTW, it is a classifieds website using MySql, Solr, PHP, js etc... Thanks

• Vim's autocomplete is excruciatingly slow

  Most of the time the autocomplete feature in VIM works nicely for me, but sometimes it seems to be scanning files which the current file references, and then it becomes painfully slow, sometimes taking several seconds to release focus back to me. Sometimes VIM tells me simply that it is "Scanning" other times, it's saying "Scanning tags" I've only this happen in Ruby files, and it happens mostly when there is a require in the file. My guess would be that this is some kind of feature which checks related files for autocomplete options, but I don't really need that, and would prefer quicker autocomplete.

• Ruby: Parse Excel 95-2003 files?

  Is there a way to read Excel 97-2003 files from Ruby? Background I'm currently using the Ruby Gem parseexcel -- http://raa.ruby-lang.org/project/parseexcel/ But it is an old port of the perl module. It works fine, but the latest format it parses is Excel 95. And guess what? Excel 2007 will not produce the Excel 95 format. John McNamara has taken over duties as the maintainer for the Perl Excel parser, see http://search.cpan.org/~jmcnamara/Spreadsheet-ParseExcel-0.55/lib/Spreadsheet/ParseExcel.pm The current version will parse Excel 95-2003 files. But is there a port to Ruby? My other thought is to build some Ruby to Perl glue code to enable use of the Perl library itself from Ruby.   Hello. I am new to Android and mobile phones development. I want to develop an application that needs to have a total control over the "phone" of the smartphone, i.e. controlling all the communication of the GSM chip with the cellular system, accessing the SIM card identity that it sends (encrypted) to the cellular system, disabling the cellular antenna and resuming it back, and more of that kind... Can it be done with Android? Does the software (OS) have control over all of the phone components in a smartphone, or there are some parts that are done in the hardware level only? (I guess that the Android API won't enable me to do everything i want, but even theoretically is it possible if I recompile the OS after making the changes there?) Thanks!

  I guess I am out of ideas here. I am trying to consume a web service in java which has an ssl certificate. I createt a a keystore file in which I have added the certificate. The file lies in my project folder. I imported it using: System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStore", "folder\\keystore.jks"); System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStorePassword", "SECRET"); Apparently, the web service call checks the keystore because when giving a wrong path to the file the application throws an exception when invoking the WS, not when setting the system property. Anyway, when giving the correct path to the keystore file, I still get AxisFault faultCode: {http://xml.apache.org/axis/}HTTP faultSubcode: faultString: (401)Authorization Required Someone told me I had to trust the CA, before any of this would work. How do I do this?

  I have a basic HTML page with a 2 column layout. I created a menu page on the sidebar column and when a link is chosen from the menu I want to display it in the main section of the index.html page. I tried doing this with iframes but its basically creating a duplicate of the index page. Help! I guess I can't post a picture because I'm new to this but I basically have an index page and then a farm with a duplicate of my index page.

  During the design html pages or aspx pages, I like to do the pure coding without Html Designer. The problem is that I like to have the following format on html page for better readability. <div> <% if (1 == 1) { %> Hello <% } else { %> World <% } %> </div> As you can guess, whenever you type '}' or ';' or etc, visual studio try to do the auto format and change to the following format <div> <% if (1 == 1) { %> Hello <% } else { %> World <% } %> </div> The question is "Is it possible to disable auto formatting just only for HTML pages on VS2010? (NOT for C# code, I still like to have auto formatting for C# pages)"

• C#, Manage concurrency in database access

  Hi there, I have written a while ago an application used by multiple users to handle trades creation. I haven't done development for some time now and can't remember how I managed the concurrency between the users and so would have liked your advices in term of design. The application was as follow: - One heavy client per user - A single database - Access to the database for each user to insert/update/delete trades - A grid in the application reflecting the trades table. That grid being updated each time someone changes a deal. My questions: 1- Do you confirm I shouldn't care about the connection to the database for each application. Considering that there is a singleton in each, I would expect on connexion per client with no issue. 2- How preventing the concurrency of the accesses? I guess I should lock when modifying the data, however don't remember how to. 3- How to have the grid automatically updated whenever the database is (by another user for example)?   I am using some Qt code that adds a VERIFY macro that looks something like this: #define VERIFY(cond) \ { \ bool ok = cond; \ Q_ASSERT(ok); \ } The code can then use it whilst being certain the condition is actually evaluated, e.g.: Q_ASSERT(callSomeFunction()); // callSomeFunction not evaluated in release builds! VERIFY(callSomeFunction()); // callSomeFunction is always evaluated Disliking macros, I would instead like to turn this into an inline function: inline VERIFY(bool condition) { Q_ASSERT(condition); } However, in release builds I am worried that the compiler would optimise out all calls to this function (as Q_ASSERT wouldn't actually do anything.) I am I worrying unnecessarily or is this likely depending on the optimisation flags/compiler/etc.? I guess I could change it to: inline VERIFY(bool condition) { condition; Q_ASSERT(condition); } But, again, the compiler may be clever enough to ignore the call. Is this inline alternative safe for both debug and release builds?

  I would like to see some source code or maybe a link to some that gives at least a stub for writing ruby gems in the C languages (C++?? is that possible too?) Also, some of you may know that Facebook compiles some of their code natively as php extensions for better performance. Is anyone doing this in Rails? If so, what has been your experience with it? I am shooting for something like this: val seven = for { x <- 1 to 10 if x == 7 } return x And that does not compile. The two errors are: - return outside method definition - method main has return statement; needs result type I know find() would be better in this case, i am just learning and exploring the language. Meaning there would be multiple versions of the master app but with customization per client. example 200 of our clients get the master app and then can customize it (text and images only via web) Will Apple allow something like this? Is there another way to get around this distribution model? • Why is the page shifting to top with a container that has overflow:hidden ?

  I'm facing a problem that's really strange. It's in every browser. Everything is working correctly, until you try to go to a section using the hash ( like #contactUs in my page)... try this url : http://mahersalam.co.cc/projects/2011/#contactUs You will see that the page SHIFTS 10px to the top. if you take the hash, it works again. I have a wrapper on the page (#container) that has overflow:hidden, I did it to make sure no scroll bars appear if the resolution change. If you remove the overflow property it works too. I guess the shifting happens through the place of the scroll bar, but because it's hidden it's place only stays. So does anyone knows how to fix this problem ?

• Read from socket

  I need to read from an AF_UNIX socket to a buffer using the function read from C, but I don't know the buffer size. I think the best way is to read N bytes until the read returns 0 (no more writers in the socket). Is this correct? Is there a way to guess the size of the buffer being written on the socket? I was thinking that a socket is a special file. Opening the file in binary mode and getting the size would help me in knowing the correct size to give to the buffer? I'm a very new to C, so please keep that in mind.

• Eclipse C++ on WinXP - Type `::iterator' has not been declared

  I'm new to C++/Eclipse. I'm trying to get it working to get a new perspective on a problem with a program I wrote in DevCPP. The program is simple and builds fine in DevCPP. In Eclipse, I get hundreds of errors like the one above. I assume the compiler can't see my include files. I've checked that the project settings - GCC C++ compiler - directories contains the location for my include files (D:\MinGW\include\c++\3.4.5). I've prowled around and tried to change 'Discovery Options' to 'GCC C++ Compiler' from 'GCC C Compiler' but it keeps changing back. I guess this is not the problem. Any help would be very welcome. I'm on a tight deadline with many interruptions and this is cracking me up.

• How to change the name of an iPhone app?

  I began an iPhone project the other day with a silly development code name, and now I want to change the name of the project since its nearly finished. But I'm not sure how to do this with XCode, trying the obvious of changing the application's name in the pinfo, causes the signing process to go wrong (I think...) and my app won't launch giving me a Launcher error. I guess I could make a new project and copy paste everything over, but it seems so primitive, that I'm hoping for a more civilized solution. Thanks!

• I want to prevent people from accessing my php pages directly using .htaccess

  I have a site that is made up of php pages, but they are served to the user through includes based on what I think they need. if they can guess the name of a php file, they can access those pages. while this is not a security risk at all, i would rather have a way to catch this and redirect them to somewhere else. i really want everything to go through the index page unless it is a file that exists (exeption being for any file ending with .php). I tried this, didnt work: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(.*\.php$) [NC] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f [NC] RewriteRule .* /n/index.php [NC]

• Parallel.For(): Update variable outside of loop

  I'm just looking in to the new .NET 4.0 features. With that, I'm attempting a simple calculation using Parallel.For and a normal for(x;x;x) loop. However, I'm getting different results about 50% of the time. long sum = 0; Parallel.For(1, 10000, y => { sum += y; } ); Console.WriteLine(sum.ToString()); sum = 0; for (int y = 1; y < 10000; y++) { sum += y; } Console.WriteLine(sum.ToString()); My guess is that the threads are trying to update "sum" at the same time. Is there an obvious way around it?

• Possible to add hook as android fetches XML-strings?

  I'm on my first week with android and would appreciate any insight if it's possible to hook or override the default behaviour when an android application reads their values from the resource-files to the shown layouts. What I want is to over time be able to add new/updated strings OTA and store locally and then on launch of application load new values instead of the ones in the default /res. Ideally i guess, would be an override of setContentView. Files holding updates will be in same xml-format as those in /res. (Please, no advices in other ways to do this. Just need to know if it's at all possible, without hacking the SDK) regards, /t
