  • Selection between two laptops for casual gaming [closed]

    I have selected two laptops that meet my budget. Here are the differences: Laptop #1: 4GB Ram, Intel Core i5 2450M 2nd Gen processor w/ 2.5 Ghz clockspeed NVIDIA GeForce GT 520MX DDR3 1 GB Dedicated Graphics 750 GB SATA II Hard disk USB 2.0 Ports 6 hrs battery life Laptop #2: 4 GB Ram, Intel Core i5 3210M 3rd Gen processor w/ 2.5 Ghz clockspeed Integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 500 GB SATA Hard disk USB 3.0 Ports 3 hrs battery life (This concerns me) First and foremost, does dedicated graphics matter for a casual gamer like me? Secondly, does the generation of the processors make a difference despite the same clockspeed. Thirdly, do usb 3.0 ports make a difference? And lastly, which laptop is more future proof?   • Problems to export java home and to find or create .bashrc in Mac OS 10.6

    Hello, I need to install a program for my studies and, this program, need java to run. When I try to perform the installation say that cannot find the JDK; since the JDK is already installed by default in mac, the problem is export the java home. I´ve try a lot and I cant do it! I know that I have to add a line in a .bashrc file (or .profile, or .bash_profile) I´ve created all those files, at different times but nothing... I´m a new mac user, but I use Linux too and I dont know what happened, I just need to export java home to perform my work... and is really necessary for me to add environment variables too.   • Raid-1 Western Digital Green AARS, cloning and WD Align Utility

    Hello all, My current setup runs on top of 2x Western Digital 2500KS drives on Raid-1, using the motherboard's 780G raid controller, on WinXP. Everything is fine, but the drives are a bit noisy. I am considering buying 2x WD6400AARS disks which are the 640GB slower 'green' drives, but also feature the Advanced Formatting 4KB sectors. This means that for WinXP the partition will have to be aligned to work properly, else there is a performance penalty. There are 2 questions here: The Green drives from WD are all slower and are (according to WD) susceptible to drop-out's from the controller. Has anyone any experience in this matter? Is there a possibility the controller will drop a drive? If so, can i do anything about it? Secondly, western digital gives a utility to perform the alignment on the partition. The thing is, will the utility see the drives in question as the operating system only sees 1 logical disk? I will be making the transition using a cloning tool (most probably norton ghost) unless i don't find a solution or a clear answer, in which case i'll just buy a win 7 license and make a clean install... thx in advance

  • Can't get Intel drivers for ASUS P6T Deluxe

    Hi everybody, A few days back my Win7 Ultimate started bugging me to install the RAID drivers for my ASUS P6T Delux. Fine, I'm all for having up to date drivers even for stuff I don't use. The problem is that the drivers I download from both ASUS support site here and the ones I get directly from Intel (can't post the second link, since I have less than 10 rep, but it's the first hit for "Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager Driver" on google) say that my system does not meet the minimum system requirements. Impossible, I would think, what with it having the X58 chipset and the Windows version is supported one. Has anyone encountered something like this before? Any clues on how to solve this would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Virtual memory on Linux doesn't add up?

    I was looking at System Monitor on Linux and noticed that Firefox is using 441 MB of memory, and several other applications are using 274, 257, 232, etc (adding up to over 3 GB of virtual memory). So I switch over to the Resources tab, and it says I'm using 462 MB of memory and not touching swap. I'm confused. What does the virtual memory amount mean then if the programs aren't actually using it. I was thinking maybe memory they've requested but aren't using, but how would the OS know that? I can't think of any "I might need this much memory in the future" function..

  • HP c6180 driver refuses to install - "must reboot to continue delete files and continue install" loo

    User called me last night, can't get HP drivers to install for printer. 500 meg download for latest c6180 driver. PC says "computer must be restarted to delete some files, then setup will continue." and it won't pass that point. (that's not exact phrasing of the error, and I'm not on the system now) Target machine is XP SP2. I upgraded to SP3. Fully patched. Ran malwarebytes, spybot, hijack this and turned off all startup entries. I noted that windows update also failed on optional printer driver updates for other printers installed on the machine. Went to printer server properties, removed all print drivers from system, deleted all printer ports. Made sure no services were marked disabled. After 5 hours of fighting this I started to get desperate, and uninstalled anything that referenced HP in the machine at all. Still no cure. I'm 6 hours into this and completely stumped. Google returns nothing applicable except unanswered requests for help on same topic.

  • Lion refuses to be installed to any partitions on Mac

    I was attempting to install Lion on my MacBook 7-1, on which I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a separate partition. Currently, my partitions look like this: |-----Mac-----|-Grub-|----Ubuntu----|-Ubuntu Swap-|. However, Disk Utility (and I assume the rest of Mac OS X) sees it as |-----Mac-----|-----Unknown-----|. Note that I am using rEfit as my default bootloader. When attempting to install Lion, I am greeted by this screen: By the way, it appears that only the Grub partition is recognized, as I remember setting it to about 10 MB. Can anyone help with this?

  • Accessing network shares on Windows7 via SonicWall VPN client

    I'm running Windows7 x64 (fully patched) and the SonicWall 4.2.6.0305 client (64-bit, claims to support Windows7). I can login to the VPN and access network resources (eg SSH to a machine that lives behind the VPN). However I cannot seem to be able to access shared filesystems. Windows is refusing to do discovery on the VPN network. I suspect part of the problem is Windows persistently considers the VPN connection to be a 'public network'. Normally, you can open the network and sharing center and modify this setting, however it does not give me a choice for the VPN. So I did the expedient thing and turned on file sharing for public networks. I also disabled the Windows firewall for good measure. Still no luck. I can access the server directly by putting \\192.168.1.240 in the taskbar, which brings up the list of shares on the server. However, trying to open any of the shares simply tells me "Windows cannot access \\192.168.1.240\share You do not have permission to access ..."; it never asks for a domain password. I also tried Windows7 native VPN functionality - it couldn't successfully connect to the VPN at all. I suspect this is because SonicWall is using some obnoxious special/undocumented authentication system; I had similar problems trying to connect on Linux with the normal IPsec tools there. What magical invocation or control panel option am I missing that will let this work? Are there any reasonable debugging strategies? I'm feeling quite frustrated at Windows tendency to not give me much useful information that might let me understand what it is trying to do and what is going wrong.

  • Error when starting Outlook 2007 on Windows 7

    Every time I start Outlook 2007 SP2 on my Windows 7 box Outlook will look like its loading fine, then I get this error message: cannot start microsoft office outlook. cannot open the outlook window and outlook will close. I was able to get outlook to start by using outlook.exe /resetnavpane in the Start-Search box, a nice tip which I got from this social.microsoft.com page. But it didn't fix the problem since outlook is still complaining when it starts after a reboot. What can I do to get outlook to startup normally?

    I'm having a complete 'mare of a time trying to use my schools Digital Blue cameras. We've got the model 3 ones, but can't find the driver disc and using the Windows Hardware Installation Wizard gets me no where! Can you help me to find the driver? When I've used it at my old school it had a piece of software called the Digital Movie Creator, which I've heard you can use to make stop-motion films, which is what I want to do!   • MacPorts, how to run "post-destroot" script

    I'm trying to install MacPorts gdb; it seems to be poorly supported… Running "port install" installs it to /opt/local/libexec/gnubin/gdb, but the intent doesn't seem to be to add that to $PATH. The portfile doesn't define any parameters for port select which is typically used to set a MacPorts installation to handle default Unix commands. But it does include these lines: foreach binary [glob -tails -directory ${destroot}${prefix}/bin g*] { ln -s ${prefix}/bin/${binary} ${destroot}${prefix}/libexec/gnubin/[string range $binary 1 end] } This is buried under an action labeled post-destroot. destroot is a MacPorts command but post-destroot is not. The script is apparently not run by port install or port activate, or if it's failing it's doing so silently. Is there a better approach than creating the links manually?

    I'm trying to set up my brother - who has a PPC mac, with 1 ghz processor and 256 ram, with a Linux distro that would allow him to surf the web on the device. If anyone knows of this mac, they also know that support has faded for the new browsers rendering the device essentially useless when it comes to the web.   • IIS Server on XP Machine with tweaked registry and services

    I have been trying for some time now to setup a webapp on my XP machine at home. Prior to doing this, I had tweaked the registry settings, fiddled with disabling and enabling servies, without recording what I tweaked, which I imagining could be what's causing the problem. I don't want to "reboot" to factory settings, although I suppose that would be nice to know how to do as well. I am more interested in finding out what settings could have influenced the behavior, and who I could contact / what information I could send them that would aid in solving the problem. Thanks.

    I would like to log a security in event in Windows 7 whenever the Microsoft Security Essentials 2 virus definition files are updates, deleted, or changed. I was expecting to do this with an Audit setting on one of the MS Security Essentials folders but I wasn't sure which one and how to avoid getting swamped with messages. What folder or files should I audit to track definition updates (or corruption) in the security events or is there a better approach?
