  • How can I install Gentoo on Virtual Box//(Ubuntu 12.04)

    I'm googling for a while about how can I install Gentoo on Virtual Box. The hand book provides less information about installing it on virtual box rather on a real partition. I thought there will be a GUI tool to install Gentoo. [Now I think there is not :(] Whenever I'm booting into gentoo Im going into a LiveDVD environment where fdisk returning "command not found !" (Not sure this is a bug or Im using a wronng command) Now Im not a very exprienced user but do like to learn and play with Gentoo. Any help link will be appriciated. Downloaded File: livedvd-x86-amd64-32ul-2012.iso (Do I need to use Gentoo 64 as OS version in Virtual Box ?)

  • Mysql start fails with Operating System error 13

    I have XAMPP on my Ubuntu Lucid system and everything worked fine. But there seems to be some problem now and mysql wouldn't start. I had tried to recover a few Drupal databases and hence copied the raw files to /opt/lampp/var/mysql folder like all other database folders. And, I guess that could have caused the problem. I am pasting the last few lines of the error log.     Why do we make DNS requests separately when an ISP could also be handling the DNS request along with HTTP data simultaneously. So rather than: Ask opendns what yahoos address is. Opendns returns: 66.55.44.11 Hey, Verizon. Send/Request data from 66.55.44.11. Why wouldn't the protocol just request data from "yahoo.com" and verizon interprets the yahoo.com as a split DNS request. This would lower latency for sure as it cuts out the time required for the dns server to call back the IP to then be sent AGAIN when it could just be handling the entire request theoretically. Couldn't this be managed via a host file change on the client side and make compatible servers?? So much like a proxy.

  • Weird noise coming out on Windows 7 when harddisk activity at peak?

    I'm having a very strange problem. I'm hearing a "choooooooooo kkkrrr" sound (Its not like the normal sound speakers make when powered on) all the time. When there is more Hard Disk r/w activity the sound increases and as HDD r/w activity slows down so the sound. I have two other OS installed on my system. I have tested, it only happens when I'm on Windows 7. I have no clue what the hell is happening !? Any help would be greatly appreciated.   • How can one detect if a server/script is accessing their site through cURL/file_get_contents()? (excluding user-agents and IP addresses)

    I've come across a question where a user is having difficulties accessing an image through a script (using cURL/file_get_contents()): How to save an image from url using PHP? The image link seems to return a 403 error when using file_get_contents() to request it. But in cURL, a more detailed error is returned: You were denied access to the system. Turn off the engine or Surf Proxy, Fake IP if you really want to access. Proxy or not accepted from any Web tools Intrusion Prevention System. Binh Minh Online Data Services @ 2008 - 2012 I also failed to access the same image after fiddling around with a cURL request myself. I tried changing the user-agent to my exact browsers user-agent which can successfully access the image. I've also tried the script on my personal local server, which (obviously) uses the same IP address as my browser... So as far as I know, user-agents and IP addresses are out of the situation. How else can someone detect a script performing a request? BTW, this is not for anything crazy. I'm just curious xD

  • Can you dynamically combine multiple conditional functions into one in Python?

    I'm curious if it's possible to take several conditional functions and create one function that checks them all (e.g. the way a generator takes a procedure for iterating through a series and creates an iterator). The basic usage case would be when you have a large number of conditional parameters (e.g. "max_a", "min_a", "max_b", "min_b", etc.), many of which could be blank. They would all be passed to this "function creating" function, which would then return one function that checked them all. Below is an example of a naive way of doing what I'm asking: def combining_function(max_a, min_a, max_b, min_b, ...): f_array = [] if max_a is not None: f_array.append( lambda x: x.a < max_a ) if min_a is not None: f_array.append( lambda x: x.a > min_a ) ... return lambda x: all( [ f(x) for f in f_array ] ) What I'm wondering is what is the most efficient to achieve what's being done above? It seems like executing a function call for every function in f_array would create a decent amount of overhead, but perhaps I'm engaging in premature/unnecessary optimization. Regardless, I'd be interested to see if anyone else has come across usage cases like this and how they proceeded. Also, if this isn't possible in Python, is it possible in other (perhaps more functional) languages?

    I want an XML stylesheet (XSLT) that will put the attributes of a few, specific, child nodes one-to-a-line. What is the XSLT for this? I recently asked a related question that someone offered a stylesheet to solve but their stylesheet didn't work for some reason, and I am curious why -- the attributes simply didn't end up one-per-line.   • Why can a public class not inherit from a less visible one?

    I apologize if this question has been asked before. I've searched SO somewhat and wasn't able to find it. I'm just curious what the rationale behind this design was/is. Obviously I understand that private/internal members of a base type cannot, nor should they, be exposed through a derived public type. But it seems to my naive thinking that the "hidden" parts could easily remain hidden while some base functionality is still shared and a new interface is exposed publicly. I'm thinking of something along these lines: Assembly X internal class InternalClass { protected virtual void DoSomethingProtected() { // Let's say this method provides some useful functionality. // Its visibility is quite limited (only to derived types in // the same assembly), but at least it's there. } } public class PublicClass : InternalClass { public void DoSomethingPublic() { // Now let's say this method is useful enough that this type // should be public.   • Windows "known folders": is there any one of them which is reliably read/write for all users on all

    SHGetKnownFolderPath() and its cohorts accept one of the constants defined here (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd378457%28v=VS.85%29.aspx ), returning the path to a directory. I'm looking for one of these folders which is reliably writable by all users (including LocalSystem) on XP, Vista, and Windows 7... but I think I'm striking out. It appears that, in fact, there is no single location on the hard drive anymore where you can put a file and be assured that all users can write to it on all these OS versions, without fiddling the permissions first. Is this true?

  • Webbrowser control: auto fill, only works one time, why?

After the form has been submitted, and you navigate back to the page previous form page (even when you click the button again), it will no longer auto fill the form values! Note: The the "autoFillDetails" code is executed a second time, 3rd time etc, it still would not auto fill the values. why does it only work one time? what am i doing wrong?

Application with webrefence receives the same collection and application with servicereference gets collection, where field code is null... Invoking servicereference: MyService myService=new MyService() Cars[] cars= client.GetCars(carcode); Invoking webservice: MyService.MyServiceSoapClient client = new MyServiceS.MyServiceSoapClient(); Cars[] cars= client.GetCars(carcode);

For example on stack over flow home page if some one click on the logo. Then the div should be displayed at the bottom position of the logo. Same way if i click on the bottom link then that div should be displayed at the bottom portion of the page. I am using mootools as my JS framework. But any JavaScript code will be helpful for me.     In Rails3, I have the following line: @messages = Message.where("recipient_deleted = ?", false).find_by_recipient_id(@user.id) In my view, I loop through @messages and print out each message, as such: <% for message in @messages %> <%= message.sender_id %> <%= message.created_at %> <%= message.body %> <% end %> This works flawlessly when there are several messages. The problem is that when I have one message, I get an error thrown at me: undefined methodeach'` How do I force rails to always return an array of messages even if there's only one message so that each always works?     Back when migration version numbers were simply incremented as you created migrations, it was easy enough to do: rake migrate VERSION=097 rake migrate VERSION=098 rake migrate VERSION=099 rake migrate VERSION=100 ...but we now have migration numbers that are something like YYYYMMDDtimeofday. Not that this is a bad thing - it keeps the migration version collisions to a minimum - but when I have 50 migrations and want to step through them one-at-a-time, it is a hassle: rake migrate VERSION=20090129215142 rake migrate VERSION=20090129219783 ...etc. I have to have a list of all the migrations open in front of me, typing out the version numbers to advance by one. Is there anything that would have an easier syntax, like: rake migrate VERSION=NEXT or rake migrate VERSION=PREV ?

When app is stared, it will play some mp3 file using AVFramework. And also initializes Audiotoolbox. In simulator, I'm able to record and play. But when I'm testing it on iPhone, I'm getting following error for initializing AudioToolBox. 2009-12-11 22:25:51.599 StoryBook[807:207] AudioRecorder init AudioSessionInitialize failed with error: 1768843636 Can some one tell me whether we can use both AV as well as Audio Toolbox frame works in one application? Why I'm getting that error?

  • Why does one loop take longer to detect a shared memory update than another loop?

    I've written a 'server' program that writes to shared memory, and a client program that reads from the memory. The server has different 'channels' that it can be writing to, which are just different linked lists that it's appending items too. The client is interested in some of the linked lists, and wants to read every node that's added to those lists as it comes in, with the minimum latency possible. I have 2 approaches for the client: For each linked list, the client keeps a 'bookmark' pointer to keep its place within the linked list. It round robins the linked lists, iterating through all of them over and over (it loops forever), moving each bookmark one node forward each time if it can. Whether it can is determined by the value of a 'next' member of the node. If it's non-null, then jumping to the next node is safe (the server switches it from null to non-null atomically). This approach works OK, but if there are a lot of lists to iterate over, and only a few of them are receiving updates, the latency gets bad. The server gives each list a unique ID. Each time the server appends an item to a list, it also appends the ID number of the list to a master 'update list'. The client only keeps one bookmark, a bookmark into the update list. It endlessly checks if the bookmark's next pointer is non-null ( while(node->next_ == NULL) {} ), if so moves ahead, reads the ID given, and then processes the new node on the linked list that has that ID. This, in theory, should handle large numbers of lists much better, because the client doesn't have to iterate over all of them each time. When I benchmarked the latency of both approaches (using gettimeofday), to my surprise #2 was terrible. The first approach, for a small number of linked lists, would often be under 20us of latency. The second approach would have small spats of low latencies but often be between 4,000-7,000us! Through inserting gettimeofday's here and there, I've determined that all of the added latency in approach #2 is spent in the loop repeatedly checking if the next pointer is non-null. This is puzzling to me; it's as if the change in one process is taking longer to 'publish' to the second process with the second approach. I assume there's some sort of cache interaction going on I don't understand. What's going on?

  • Is there good .sol editor for Flash Player 9 Local Shared Objects? Can we build one?

    There's plenty of them out there but none of them do what I would like them to do. Most of them crash when opening a file or simply corrupt the data. Many don't run at all. It seems to me that most were written 3-4 years ago for AS2 .sols and no longer work with FP9/AS3 sols. I'd attempt to write my own using AIR but I can't find a new spec of the byte format. There's an explanation of the file format here: http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=27026&group_id=131628 and another here: http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=27026&group_id=131628 but it looks as though both of these docs are a good 4 years old (pre-FP9) and as I'm not skilled or experienced in file formats, writing a new one, especially without an updated spec, is seeming like less and less of a viable option. Ideally I'd like one that can not only read the .sol, but edit and save new values also. Thanks!
