  So we use hexadecimal which has the advantage of going up to 15 in single digits A-F, but why is it an issue that it takes 2 digits to represent the number 10 in decimal? I was reading up about hexadecimal and I came across these 2 lines: Base 16 suggests the digits 0 to 15, but the problem we face is that it requires 2 digits to represent 10 to 15. Hexadecimal solves this problem by using the letters A to F. My question is, why do we care how many digits it takes to represent 15? What is the importance of this number, and how does denoting it with a single character have any value?

Please give step-by-step instructions in plain English. Update: I'm referring to my Ubuntu operating system. I installed it using Wubi through Microsoft Windows. I deleted Wubi from my Windows desktop after installation. All I want is to expand my Ubuntu operating system. I plan to gradually transition from Windows to Ubuntu and so I'll need to transfer more files and programs from Windows to Ubuntu in the future. Right now, I already need more GiBs for Ubuntu. I can barely use Ubuntu right now because there's almost no space left. I simply want Ubuntu to use what space I need it to use.   Hello, I recently purchased a USB CD ROM drive, but I don't know how to get it to work with my computer which runs Ubuntu 10.04. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00303H908/ref=oss_product When I issue the lsusb command, it shows up as: Bus 002 Device 016: ID 05e3:0701 Genesys Logic, Inc. USB 2.0 IDE Adapter The computer doesn't recognize it automatically. How can I get this drive to show up as an actual drive on my computer? If this particular drive can't handle Linux, can you recommended one which can and provide a link to it so I can purchase it? Thanks!   I just installed TeamBox on my Ubuntu 9.10 server. I have it up and running on port 3000 using the provided server script. It's running extremely slow, up to 30 seconds per HTTP request when connecting from another computer. I used links to load up TeamBox from the shell and it took no time at all. I then setup an SSH tunnel and again it was working very fast. I run about 30 vhosts through apache on this server, as well as SAMBA etc and do not have any problems. How can I troubleshoot this problem?

• Ubuntu 12.04 Bootloader failed to install

  Sorry about the excessively long question, but I figured giving more information would be better. I recently bought a new desktop for myself, running Windows 7. It has two hard drives, and I wanted to install Ubuntu on a small partition on the second hard drive. I created 25GB "free space" in Windows and ran a LiveCD install. I wanted to select the install options myself but accidentally selected "Install alongside Windows 7," but it seemed to pick up the free space and installed itself there as I wanted it to. However, I was told that the bootloader installation had failed. I chose to "Cancel installation," leaving my computer unable to boot. I wiped my computer and reinstalled Windows. After that, I tried installing Ubuntu through Windows using WUBI, once using files from my LiveCD and once downloading everything again. Both times the install succeeded, but both times when I restarted and tried to load Ubuntu, it gave me an error - wubildr.mbr was corrupt or missing. I checked in Windows - it was indeed present on the C:\ drive. I went back to the LiveCD installation, this time going the custom options route. I assigned 16GB to an Ext4 journaling file system and 10GB to a swap file. I got the same bootloader error as before. Being prompted to select a different partition to install the bootloader to, I first tried the partition Ubuntu was installed on. A window came up saying that the install had succeeded, but a second window gave me the same error and choices as before. I went through every single option it gave me, including the Windows partition and the hard drives themselves (dev/sda, dev/sdb). Same result. I then chose to not install a bootloader. Windows still works fine, and I assume Ubuntu has installed but is unbootable. Knowing that my computer could potentially brick itself again - and, this time around, with a lot of data to lose and hassle to go through if I mess it up - I really don't want to do anything without some advice. So I'll ask this: a) Why did the bootloader fail to install? Can I fix the error and install Ubuntu fresh? b) Is there any way to get around the error, install the bootloader, and point it towards an existing installation of Ubuntu? c) Is there a quicker and easier solution I might have missed? EDIT: Thanks for the tip, AthloX. After testing the liveCD in Virtualbox with no installation problems, I looked around for some alternate bootloaders but had no success. I attempted another install, which installed the bootloader and Ubuntu just fine but bricked Windows 7. I wiped both hard disks clean, including some "System Reserved" partitions I hadn't noticed before, before re-installing Windows 7 on one hard drive and immediately afterwards installing Ubuntu on the other. Now the computer boots into Windows, but I can pop into the BIOS at startup to boot into Ubunbtu via it's bootloader, and I'm guessing it'll only take a bit of poking at the BIOS to swap the load order. I've performed apt-get clean/autoclean/install -f/upgrade -f many times but they won't resolve. I can think of only 2 other 'solutions': Edit the dpkg dependency list to trick it into doing the installation with a broken dependency. This seems very dodgy and it would be a last resort Downgrade both initramfs-tools and initramfs-tools-bin to 0.99ubuntu13 from the precise/main sources and hope that would get them in step. However I'm not sure if this will be possible, or whether it would introduce more issues. I'm not sure how this situation arise in the first place. /boot was 96% full; it's now 56% full (it's tiny - 64MB ... this is what I got from the hosting company). Can anyone offer advice please?

  I've created a python script in which an event needs to be executed each time I press the Super (or WinKey) on my keyboard. How can one achieve this without the python process being "focused" - as it is running in the background waiting for the key to be pressed to execute the event? I've seen a lot of posts around the web showing me how to read input - but they have all required one to have the process "focused" and none have showed me how to capture the Super (or WinKey) using a python script. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10.

• Ubuntu-installer fails preseed configuration file

  I try to install Ubuntu 12.04 over network unattended. I installed a DHCP server (Dnsmasq), a TFTP server (tftpd-hpa), I got the netboot.tar.gz archive with the pxelinux.0 file, the pxelinux.cfg directory, the linux kernel and the initrd.gz image and I put a preseed file into my web server. Dnsmasq, tftpd-hpa, pxelinux and Apache are all on the same machine. The PCs MB doesn’t support PXE, so I use iPXE and boot it from a CD. The PC gets an IP from the DHCP, then iPXE loads #pxelinux.cfg/default, which I edited like this: timeout 5 prompt 0 default install label install kernel ubuntu-installer/i386/linux append vga=normal locale=en_GB setup/layoutcode=sl_SI console-setup/layoutcode=sl_SI netcfg/choose_interface=auto initrd=ubuntu-installer/i386/initrd.gz netcfg/get_hostname=ubuntux preseed/url=#http://192.168.10.10/ins/preseed.cfg Then it loads the linux kernel and the initrd.gz image. Then I got a question: Detect keyboard layout? I desided to bother with this later. So I answer No, and then twice on Englishjust to get trough and then I get to the error: The installer failed to process the preconfiguration file from #http://192.168.10.10/ins/preseeed.cfg. The file may be corrupt. I created the file myself and copied the d-I commands into it. I also tried to get the preseed.cfg over a web browser and it works fine. So why is the installer failing?

• Magento Installation stuck at configuration

  Hi Everyone, I am not sure what is going wrong when I am trying to install magento to my local ubuntu machine. I did all the steps mentionsed in the magento wiki. Everything goes well until I reach the point where I am here which is the magento config page. When I try and continue after entering the necessary details like host, database name and user name and submit it comes back to the same page. I checked for everything like db in my phomyadmin panel and it still gets stuck there. What is the possible reason for that. Thanks

  Folks, Yesterday I installed Rails 3.2 on Ubuntu 12.10 and created a new project in order to check it. It was working OK. Today I tried to create a new project and got the message bellow (Portuguese version): O programa 'rails' pode ser encontrado nos seguintes pacotes: * rails * ruby-railties-3.2 Tente: sudo apt-get install <pacote selecionado> Something like: The program 'rails' could not be found in the follow packages: ... ... Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package> I run the command gem list and all the gems are listed, including Rails one. I tried to search on the web for a solution, but haven't found any. • PVM terminates after Adding Host

  On Ubuntu 9.10 using PVM 3.4.5-12 (the PVM package when you use apt-get) The program terminates after adding a host. laptop> pvm pvm> add bowtie-slave add bowtie-slave terminated laptop> Current Configuration only $PVM_RSH = bin/usr/ssh I can ssh perfectly fine into the slave without a password, and run commands on it. • Problems updating and re-installing VLC Ubuntu 11.10

  I can't seem to fix or update, upgrade VLC AT ALL; this is what I get when trying to install, I had vlc before, but was not working properly so I uninstalled it; then I try to Install again to have the full properties. • Magento connect stuck while installing

  Hi Everyone, I am facing this problem while installing extensions, themes basically anything from magento connect. When I enter the extension key and click install It just gets stuck and even when it says done and I try and go back on admin page it says "There are PEAR processes running. If you will close the window or navigate away from the page, installation will be interrupted. " Has anyone faced this problem. I am working on ubuntu 9.1 and having magento 1.4. • what is cairo required by GTK 2.9 to compile (on Lucid Lynx)?

  I have been trying to run configure to prepare the make file for GTK 2,9 on a fresh Linux box (running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx). it complained about some dependencies, including: glib-2.0 atk (1.29.2) pango (1.20) cairo (1.6) I managed to find the glib 2.22.0, downloaded the atk but did not compile yet, did not start the pango yet, but when tried to get the cairo package I didn't know where to get it from! nothing on GNU site, not on GTK site! anyone knows where to get it from?
