  • Is using value converters to generate GUI-friendly strings a misuse of value converters?

    - by tempy
    Currently, I use value converters to generate user-friendly strings for the GUI. As an example, I have a window that displays the number of available entities in the status bar. The Viewmodel simply has an int dependency property that the calling code can set, and then on the binding for the textbox that displays the number of entities, I specify the int dependency property and a value converter that changes "x" into "x entities available". My code is starting to become littered with these converters, and I have a large number of annoying resource declarations in my XAML, and yet I like them because all the GUI-specific string formatting is being isolated in the converters and the calling code doesn't have to worry about it. But still, I wonder if this is not the purpose that value converters were made for.

  • Get logical path from treeview which has HierarchicalDataTemplate

    - by phenevo
    Hi, I have a structure of geography objects: Country Areas, Provinces, Cities and Hotels Country has regions, regions provinces etc... Whne I'll click City node I wanna to get logical path eg: France,Provanse,SomeProvince,Montpellier,Coral Hotel. Each class has fields: name, code nad listOf... Treeview works great, but this method not: private void structureTree_SelectedItemChanged(object sender, RoutedPropertyChangedEventArgs<object> e) { if (structureTree.SelectedItem is Hotel) { objectCode = ((Hotel)structureTree.SelectedItem).Code; TreeViewItem item = e.OriginalSource as TreeViewItem; DependencyObject parent = VisualTreeHelper.GetParent(item); dlgEditHotel(objectCode, structureTree.Parent.ToString()); } }

  • Why are all objects in this extension of usercontrol null at runtime?

    - by csciguy
    All, I have a simple class. public class Container : UserControl { public bool IsClickable { get; set; } } I have a class that extends this class. public class ScrollingContainer : Container { public void Draw() { } public void Update() { } } I have a custom class, that then extends ScrollingContainer. public partial class MaskContainer : ScrollingContainer { public MaskContainer() { InitializeComponent(); } } XAML <local:ScrollingContainer x:Class="Test.Types.MaskContainer" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" xmlns:local="clr-namespace:GameObjects;assembly=GameObjects" mc:Ignorable="d" > </local:ScrollingContainer> In my mainpage.xaml, I have the following. <types:MaskContainer x:Name="maskContainer" Canvas.ZIndex="1" Width="Auto" Height="Auto"> <Canvas x:Name="maskCanvas"> <Button x:Name="button1" Content="test button"/> </Canvas> </types:MaskContainer> Why, at runtime, are both maskCanvas and button1 null? maskContainer is not null. The inheritance should be straightforward here. Container inherits usercontrol. Scrollable container inherits container. Mask Container inherits scrollable container. Why am I losing the fucntionality of the original base class at this level? Is it incorrect to add the element (button1) to the maskcontainer inside of the main.xaml? My end goal is to create a container that is reusable, but inherits all properties/methods that I've specified throughout the chain. Any help is appreciated.

  • Silverlight Custom Control in F# DefaultStyleKey

    - by akaphenom
    Wondering how to accomplish setting the Style xaml with the code in F#. Im a C# project the buld options allow you to mark it as a resource cusomt build command of: MSBuild:Compile I don't see it in the properties panel, so I tried to add it by hand to the project file myself... Any ideas? The application loads - the custom control has no output (but the code executes). Thanks

  • In Android, how can i allow the user to choose a color between 4 ?

    - by Marco Siino
    I'm making an Android App, and i need to put a control that let user choose between 4 different colors. I want to do this with something like radio buttons: the problem is that radiobuttons are round... is there a way to set them looks like square/rect buttons, and assign a color to their inside rect area ? If not, how can i achieve that choose for the user ? I need this because i'm making a Todo/Task android application, and i need the user to choose the priority of a task, between for priority level that are rapresented with a color. So i think to do that by showing 4 buttons, each with a different color associated, and a text inside ("0", "1", "2", "3") Thanks!

  • Using a FormattedText object, how do I find out how much of my text was actually displayed?

    - by Robert
    If I have code like this: FormattedText text = new FormattedText(sTheBook, System.Globalization.CultureInfo.CurrentUICulture, System.Windows.FlowDirection.LeftToRight, new Typeface("Times New Roman"), 13, Brushes.Black); text.MaxTextWidth = 300; text.MaxTextHeight = 600; text.TextAlignment = TextAlignment.Justify; dc.DrawText(text, new Point(10, 0)); ...then, if it is long, only some of the text that I passed in (via sTheBook) will be displayed on the screen. I need to know how much was displayed so I can display the rest later! I can easily measure an amount of text, but it seems silly to do a search by rendering and re-rendering my text over and over until I find the piece that fits exactly. Thanks!

  • Dynamic UI vs Static UI

    - by Damien
    I've been wondering, at what point should I give up the convenience of a static data entry form with designer support for a dynamic UI which removes a lot of code duplication? There seems to be a conflict in the programming world where people constantly try to remove code repetition to improve maintainability and yet when it comes to forms, that all goes out of the window and everything gets added explicitly to the forms. What signs should I look for to know when it's time to leave the designer in the dust and create a dynamic UI?

  • Modify a ListBox's item from a button in it's template?

    - by Maciek
    In my Silv erlight 3 project, I'm using a ListBox to display results of a Get() operation form a WCF WebService. The ListBox's item template is the following : <ListBox x:Name="m_listview" ItemsSource="{Binding Users, Mode=TwoWay, UpdateSourceTrigger=Default}" Foreground="{StaticResource EnergyBlue}" Background="{StaticResource EnergyBackground}" HorizontalContentAlignment="Stretch" VerticalContentAlignment="Center" Grid.ColumnSpan="3" Margin="0,0,0,2" IsSynchronizedWithCurrentItem="False"> <ListBox.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <Grid MinWidth="536" MinHeight="10" d:DesignWidth="19.875" d:DesignHeight="20.75"> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="0.2*"/> <ColumnDefinition Width="0.2*"/> <ColumnDefinition Width="0.2*"/> <ColumnDefinition Width="0.2*"/> <ColumnDefinition Width="0.2*"/> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=UserName, Mode=TwoWay, UpdateSourceTrigger=Default}" Grid.Column="0" Foreground="{StaticResource EnergyWhite}" Margin="2" Background="{StaticResource EnergyBackground}" BorderBrush="{StaticResource EnergyBlue}" SelectionBackground="{StaticResource EnergyBlue}" SelectionForeground="{StaticResource EnergyWhite}" MinWidth="100"/> <PasswordBox Password="{Binding Path=UserPass, Mode=TwoWay, UpdateSourceTrigger=Default}" Grid.Column="1" Foreground="{StaticResource EnergyWhite}" Margin="2" Background="{StaticResource EnergyBackground}" BorderBrush="{StaticResource EnergyBlue}" SelectionBackground="{StaticResource EnergyBlue}" SelectionForeground="{StaticResource EnergyWhite}" MinWidth="100"/> <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=UserTypeId, Mode=TwoWay, UpdateSourceTrigger=Default}" Grid.Column="2" Foreground="{StaticResource EnergyWhite}" Margin="2" Background="{StaticResource EnergyBackground}" BorderBrush="{StaticResource EnergyBlue}" SelectionBackground="{StaticResource EnergyBlue}" SelectionForeground="{StaticResource EnergyWhite}" MinWidth="100"/> <Button Style="{StaticResource EnergyGlassButton}" Grid.Column="3" MinWidth="10" MinHeight="10" Content="Update" Click="OnUpdateUser"/> <Button Style="{StaticResource EnergyGlassButton}" Grid.Column="4" MinWidth="10" MinHeight="10" Content="Remove" Click="OnRemoveUser"/> </Grid> </DataTemplate> </ListBox.ItemTemplate> </ListBox> The template contains 2 buttons. When I click either of them, I'd like to obtain a reference to the exact data-item under the listboxitem. How do I do that? I've tried : User target_user = m_listview.SelectedItem as User; but it turned out that the listview item wasn't selected. Can it be done without actually selecting the listview item? For instance, just click on the "remove" button and have the row disappear? Best regards

  • Python - Bitmap won't draw/display

    - by Wallter
    I have been working on this project for some time now - it was originally supposed to be a test to see if, using wxPython, I could build a button 'from scratch.' From scratch means: that i would have full control over all the aspects of the button (i.e. controlling the BMP's that are displayed... what the event handlers did... etc.) I have run into several problems (as this is my first major python project.) Now, when the all the code is working for the life of me I can't get an image to display. Basic code - not working dc = wx.BufferedPaintDC(self) dc.SetFont(self.GetFont()) dc.SetBackground(wx.Brush(self.GetBackgroundColour())) dc.Clear() dc.DrawBitmap(wx.Bitmap("/home/wallter/Desktop/Mouseover.bmp"), 100, 100) self.Refresh() self.Update() Full Main.py import wx from Custom_Button import Custom_Button from wxPython.wx import * ID_ABOUT = 101 ID_EXIT = 102 class MyFrame(wx.Frame): def __init__(self, parent, ID, title): wxFrame.__init__(self, parent, ID, title, wxDefaultPosition, wxSize(400, 400)) self.CreateStatusBar() self.SetStatusText("Program testing custom button overlays") menu = wxMenu() menu.Append(ID_ABOUT, "&About", "More information about this program") menu.AppendSeparator() menu.Append(ID_EXIT, "E&xit", "Terminate the program") menuBar = wxMenuBar() menuBar.Append(menu, "&File"); self.SetMenuBar(menuBar) # The call for the 'Experiential button' self.Button1 = Custom_Button(parent, -1, wx.Point(100, 100), wx.Bitmap("/home/wallter/Desktop/Mouseover.bmp"), wx.Bitmap("/home/wallter/Desktop/Normal.bmp"), wx.Bitmap("/home/wallter/Desktop/Click.bmp")) # The following three lines of code are in place to try to get the # Button1 to display (trying to trigger the Paint event (the _onPaint.) # Because that is where the 'draw' functions are. self.Button1.Show(true) self.Refresh() self.Update() # Because the Above three lines of code did not work, I added the # following four lines to trigger the 'draw' functions to test if the # '_onPaint' method actually worked. # These lines do not work. dc = wx.BufferedPaintDC(self) dc.SetFont(self.GetFont()) dc.SetBackground(wx.Brush(self.GetBackgroundColour())) dc.DrawBitmap(wx.Bitmap("/home/wallter/Desktop/Mouseover.bmp"), 100, 100) EVT_MENU(self, ID_ABOUT, self.OnAbout) EVT_MENU(self, ID_EXIT, self.TimeToQuit) def OnAbout(self, event): dlg = wxMessageDialog(self, "Testing the functions of custom " "buttons using pyDev and wxPython", "About", wxOK | wxICON_INFORMATION) dlg.ShowModal() dlg.Destroy() def TimeToQuit(self, event): self.Close(true) class MyApp(wx.App): def OnInit(self): frame = MyFrame(NULL, -1, "wxPython | Buttons") frame.Show(true) self.SetTopWindow(frame) return true app = MyApp(0) app.MainLoop() Full CustomButton.py import wx from wxPython.wx import * class Custom_Button(wx.PyControl): def __init__(self, parent, id, Pos, Over_BMP, Norm_BMP, Push_BMP, **kwargs): wx.PyControl.__init__(self,parent, id, **kwargs) self.Bind(wx.EVT_LEFT_DOWN, self._onMouseDown) self.Bind(wx.EVT_LEFT_UP, self._onMouseUp) self.Bind(wx.EVT_LEAVE_WINDOW, self._onMouseLeave) self.Bind(wx.EVT_ENTER_WINDOW, self._onMouseEnter) self.Bind(wx.EVT_ERASE_BACKGROUND,self._onEraseBackground) self.Bind(wx.EVT_PAINT,self._onPaint) self.pos = Pos self.Over_bmp = Over_BMP self.Norm_bmp = Norm_BMP self.Push_bmp = Push_BMP self._mouseIn = False self._mouseDown = False def _onMouseEnter(self, event): self._mouseIn = True def _onMouseLeave(self, event): self._mouseIn = False def _onMouseDown(self, event): self._mouseDown = True def _onMouseUp(self, event): self._mouseDown = False self.sendButtonEvent() def sendButtonEvent(self): event = wx.CommandEvent(wx.wxEVT_COMMAND_BUTTON_CLICKED, self.GetId()) event.SetInt(0) event.SetEventObject(self) self.GetEventHandler().ProcessEvent(event) def _onEraseBackground(self,event): # reduce flicker pass def Iz(self): dc = wx.BufferedPaintDC(self) dc.DrawBitmap(self.Norm_bmp, 100, 100) def _onPaint(self, event): # The printing functions, they should work... but don't. dc = wx.BufferedPaintDC(self) dc.SetFont(self.GetFont()) dc.SetBackground(wx.Brush(self.GetBackgroundColour())) dc.Clear() dc.DrawBitmap(self.Norm_bmp) # This never printed... • MouseOver Trigger firing on ContextMenu with overridden ControlTemplate. Where is it coming from?

    - by Dabblernl
    I have this very simple ControlTemplate: <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type ContextMenu}"> <Border Name="Border" Background="{StaticResource BlueBackground}" BorderBrush="LightBlue" CornerRadius="10" BorderThickness="1" > <StackPanel IsItemsHost="True"/> </Border> </ControlTemplate> I made it to create a nifty jawdroppingly beautiful rounded corner! However, when I point the mouse over a contextmenu a MouseOver Trigger fires from somewhere that draws a terribly ugly nearly square border on top of my nifty rounded border! Where is it coming from?? EDIT: The most likely cause is that the ContextMenu is an ItemsControl that holds MenuItems, even when my ContextMenu holds a single UserControl. So the UserControl is seen as a MenuItem and highlighted when the IsMouseOver==true! What is the easiest way to disable this behaviour?

  • Why is button background defaulting to grey when IsPressed is true

    - by Dave Colwell
    Hey all, I have a simple problem. Using the IsPressed trigger i want to be able to set the background color of a button to something other than the default grey. Here is what the button looks like when it is not pressed and here is what it looks like when it is clicked Here is the trigger for the button. I know the trigger is firing correctly because of the glow effect around the edge of the button when it is clicked. I also know that the brush is correct because i tried it out as a background brush to see what it looked like. <Style.Triggers> <Trigger Property="IsMouseOver" Value="True"> <Setter Property="Background" Value="{DynamicResource ButtonHoverBrush}"/> <Setter Property="BitmapEffect" Value="{DynamicResource ButtonHoverGlow}"/> </Trigger> <!-- This is the trigger which is working but the background color wont change --> <Trigger Property="IsPressed" Value="True"> <Setter Property="BitmapEffect" Value="{DynamicResource ButtonHoverGlow}"/> <Setter Property="Background" Value="{DynamicResource ButtonPressedBrush}" /> </Trigger> </Style.Triggers>

  • ViewModel updates after Model server roundtrip

    - by Pavel Savara
    I have stateless services and anemic domain objects on server side. Model between server and client is POCO DTO. The client should become MVVM. The model could be graph of about 100 instances of 20 different classes. The client editor contains diverse tab-pages all of them live-connected to model/viewmodel. My problem is how to propagate changes after server round-trip nice way. It's quite easy to propagate changes from ViewModel to DTO. For way back it would be possible to throw away old DTO and replace it whole with new one, but it will cause lot of redrawing for lists/DataTemplates. I could gather the server side changes and transmit them to client side. But the names of fields changed would be domain/DTO specific, not ViewModel specific. And the mapping seems nontrivial to me. If I should do it imperative way after round-trip, it would break SOC/modularity of viewModels. I'm thinking about some kind of mapping rule engine, something like automappper or emit mapper. But it solves just very plain use-cases. I don't see how it would map/propagate/convert adding items to list or removal. How to identify instances in collections so it could merge values to existing instances. As well it should propagate validation/error info. Maybe I should implement INotifyPropertyChanged on DTO and try to replay server side events on it ? And then bind ViewModel to it ? Would binding solve the problems with collection merges nice way ? Is EventAgregator from PRISM useful for that ? Is there any event record-replay component ? Is there better client side pattern for architecture with server side logic ?

  • MVVM- How can I bind to a property, which is not a DependancyProperty?

    - by highone
    I have found this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2245928/mvvm-and-the-textboxs-selectedtext-property. However, I am having trouble getting the solution given to work. This is my non-working code: View: SelectedText and Text are just string properties from my ViewModel. <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=Text, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}" Height="155" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Margin="68,31,0,0" Name="textBox1" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="264" AcceptsReturn="True" AcceptsTab="True" local:TextBoxHelper.SelectedText="{Binding SelectedText, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}" /> <TextBox Text="{Binding SelectedText, Mode=OneWay, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}" Height="154" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Margin="82,287,0,0" Name="textBox2" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="239" /> TextBoxHelper public static class TextBoxHelper { #region "Selected Text" public static string GetSelectedText(DependencyObject obj) { return (string)obj.GetValue(SelectedTextProperty); } public static void SetSelectedText(DependencyObject obj, string value) { obj.SetValue(SelectedTextProperty, value); } // Using a DependencyProperty as the backing store for SelectedText. This enables animation, styling, binding, etc... public static readonly DependencyProperty SelectedTextProperty = DependencyProperty.RegisterAttached( "SelectedText", typeof(string), typeof(TextBoxHelper), new FrameworkPropertyMetadata(null, FrameworkPropertyMetadataOptions.BindsTwoWayByDefault, SelectedTextChanged)); private static void SelectedTextChanged(DependencyObject obj, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs e) { TextBox tb = obj as TextBox; if (tb != null) { if (e.OldValue == null && e.NewValue != null) { tb.SelectionChanged += tb_SelectionChanged; } else if (e.OldValue != null && e.NewValue == null) { tb.SelectionChanged -= tb_SelectionChanged; } string newValue = e.NewValue as string; if (newValue != null && newValue != tb.SelectedText) { tb.SelectedText = newValue as string; } } } static void tb_SelectionChanged(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { TextBox tb = sender as TextBox; if (tb != null) { SetSelectedText(tb, tb.SelectedText); } } #endregion } What am I doing wrong?

  • MVVM- How would I go about propagating settings between my main view-model (and other view-models) a

    - by Justin
    I am building a settings dialog for my application and right now all of the settings correspond with settings on the main view-model, but as I add more view's and view-models some may not. I need to know what the best practice is for loading the current settings into the settings dialog and then saving the settings to thier corresponding view-models if the user clicks okay. I will not be using the Properties.Settings.Default system to store settings since I want my application to be as portable as possible and this would store user scoped settings in the directory: C:\Users\ username \Local Settings\Application Data\ ApplicationName Instead of in my application's directory. In case it makes any difference I am using the MVVM Light Toolkit by Laurent Bugnion.

  • Trouble binding command in grid menu item.

    - by Pete
    I have a grid that's inside a usercontrol derived class called MediatedUserControl. I'm adding a context menu to let the user delete an item, but I've been unable to figure out how to bind the command to my command property. I'm using MVVM and my viewmodel implements a public ICommand property called DeleteSelectedItemCommand. However, when the view is displayed, I get the following message in the output window: System.Windows.Data Error: 4 : Cannot find source for binding with reference 'RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType='BRO.View.MediatedUserControl', AncestorLevel='1''. BindingExpression:Path=DataContext.DeleteSelectedItemCommand; DataItem=null; target element is 'BarButtonItem' (HashCode=6860584); target property is 'Command' (type 'ICommand') I feel like I generally have a good handle on bindings like this and can't figure out what it is I'm missing here. • Finding the TextBlock that is part of the default control template ComboBox generated through code.

    - by uriya
    I'm trying to find the TextBlock that is inside the control template of a comboBox. using VisualTreeHelpar.GetChildrenCount is working only if the comboBox is declared in XAML.In that case GetChildrenCount returns 1 and a recursive search is possible. However, if I declare the combo as a member of the Window class using code, allocated and setting it to its place, the function GetChildrenCount return 0. When I run snoop in this scenario It shows the combo children hierarchy. I want to be able to search the comboBox just as snoop does. Any help would be appreciated. code: ComboBox mCombo = null; private void Windows_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { mCombo = new ComboBox; mGrid.Children.Add(mCombo); Grid.SetRow(mCombo,0); int count = VisualTreeHelpar.GetChildrenCount(mCombo); }

  • Why use MVVM???

    - by LnDCobra
    Okay, I have been looking into MVVM pattern, and each time I have previously tried looking into it, I gave up for a number of reasons: Unnecessary Extra Long Winded Coding No apparent advantages for coders (no designers in my office. Currently only myself soon to be another coder) Not a lot of resources/documentation of good practices! (Or at least hard to find) Cannot think of a single scenario where this is advantageous. I'm about to give up on it yet again, and thought I'd ask to see if someone answer the reasons above. I honestly can't see an advantage of using this for a single/partner coding. Even in complex projects with 10's of windows. To me the DataSet is a good enough view and binding like in the answer by Brent following question
