• How to train yourself to avoid writing “clever” code?

  Do you know that feeling when you just need to show off that new trick with Expressions or generalize three different procedures? This does not have to be on Architecture Astronaut scale and in fact may be helpful but I can't help but notice someone else would implement the same class or package in a more clear, straightforward (and sometimes boring) manner. I noticed I often design programs by oversolving the problem, sometimes deliberately and sometimes out of boredom. In either case, I usually honestly believe my solution is crystal clear and elegant, until I see evidence to the contrary but it's usually too late. There is also a part of me that prefers undocumented assumptions to code duplication, and cleverness to simplicity. What can I do to resist the urge to write “cleverish” code and when should the bell ring that I am Doing It Wrong? The problem is getting even more pushing as I'm now working with a team of experienced developers, and sometimes my attempts at writing smart code seem foolish even to myself after time dispels the illusion of elegance.

• How to solve "Broken Pipe" error when using awk with head

  I'm getting broken pipe errors from a command that does something like: ls -tr1 /a/path | awk -F '\n' -vpath=/prepend/path/ '{print path$1}' | head -n 50 Essentially I want to list (with absolute path) the oldest X files in a directory. What seems to happen is that the output is correct (I get 50 file paths output) but that when head has output the 50 files it closes stdin causing awk to throw a broken pipe error as it is still outputting more rows.

[Is it a delayed commit, "a pre commit environment", is there a tool that allows for the patch to be sent to another dev]? Are there any projects that use code reviews? From my understanding the linux kernel is mostly based around trust of the commitor. MySQL was based on the main author's approval and the performance impact.

• Should companies require developers to credit code they didn't write?

  In academia, it's considered cheating if a student copies code/work from someone/somewhere else without giving credit, and tries to pass it off as his/her own. Should companies make it a requirement for developers to properly credit all non-trivial code and work that they did not produce themselves? Is it useful to do so, or is it simply overkill? I understand there are various free licenses out there, but if I find stuff I like and actually use, I really feel compelled to give credit via comment in code even if it's not required by the license (or lack thereof one).

When you enter a bad or broken link in Google Chrome, the browser takes you to a search results page with all possibly relevant links to the request attempted. First, here's some background, we got some experienced developers and we also got new hires with almost zero programming practice. we'd like to perform fast and short iterations to release our product. we all team members locate at same site. The advantages of code review before commit I've learned, mentor new hires try to prevent errors, failures, bad designs in early developing cycle learn from others knowledge backup if someone quits But I also got some bad experience, like low efficiency, some changes may be reviewed over days hard to balance speed and quality, especially for newbies some guy felt distrust As to post-review, I just knew little about this, but the most thing I worried about is the risk of losing control, people never review.   I've just tried to create the smallest possible language interpreter. Would you like to join and try? Rules of the game: You should specify a programming language you're interpreting. If it's a language you invented, it should come with a list of commands in the comments. Your code should start with example program and data assigned to your code and data variables. Your code should end with output of your result. It's preferable that there are debug statements at every intermediate step. Your code should be runnable as written. You can assume that data are 0 and 1s (int, string or boolean, your choice) and output is a single bit. The language should be Turing-complete in the sense that for any algorithm written on a standard model, such as Turing machine, Markov chains, or similar of your choice, it's reasonably obvious (or explained) how to write a program that after being executred by your interpreter performs the algorithm. The length of the code is defined as the length of the code after removal of input part, output part, debug statements and non-necessary whitespaces. Please add the resulting code and its length to the post. You can't use functions that make compiler execute code for you, such as eval(), exec() or similar. • Bricked - tty mode incorrect, terminal disabled, unity broken

  After installing VirtualBox unity seems to be uninstalled.. Launcher and task bar are missing. I can't access terminal from the normal ctrl alt T command. I tried logging into TTY mode but it says my login is incorrect. I am trying to login with my normal ubuntu username and password. I have searched for solutions but since I dont have terminal or TTY I cant bash out any commands, and I have tried safeboot but the root terminal always says it cant run whatever command I enter. I am really lost and I am trying to avoid a fresh install :( I greatly and genuinely appreciate any help! This is the computer I use for college!

• Installing skype will not work - skype-bin not installable, and 'held broken packages'

  So, I am trying to install skype through apt-get, but after running into this problem multiple times, and trying to find a solution, it still doesn't work... I tried all the answers here: Installing Skype on 12.04 64 bit causes errors, but I still get the error. (my problem is exactly the same as that one, too) I even went and edited the package status thing manually, and removed all references to 'skype' or 'skype-bin'. I still get the problem... I'm running ubuntu 12.10, as a dual-boot with windows 7. It's a 64-bit computer.

• I attempted to install cuda drivers, and now almost everything is broken

  I tried to install CUDA tookit 5.0 on ubuntu 12.04 and the installation proceeded OK. After rebooting however, all I get is a terminal login. I've attempted to start the display manager with sudo start lightdm and it says all OK, but just hangs the prompt when it finishes loading without ever starting any display manager. sudo start gdm just flickers and goes back to the prompt. There is no network connection on the machine either. It usually connects to a wireless network with remembered credentials. What can I do to recover the machine?

  I have one zpool called tank in RaidZ1 with 5x1TB SATA HDDs. I'm using Ubuntu Server 11.10 Oneric, kernel 3.0.0-15-server. Installed ZFS from ppa also I'm using zfs-auto-snapshot. The ZFS file system when zfs module loaded to the kernel hangs my computer. Before it I created few new file systems: zfs create -V 10G tank/iscsi1 zfs create -V 10G tank/iscsi2 zfs create -V 10G tank/iscsi3 I shared them through iSCSI by /dev/tank/iscsiX path. And my computer started to hanging sometimes when I used tank/iscsiX by iSCSI, do not know why exactly. I switched off iSCSI and started to remove this file systems: zfs destroy tank/iscsi3 I'm also using zfs-auto-snapshot so I had snapshots and without -r key my command not destroying the FS. So I issued next command: zfs destroy tank/iscsi3 -r The tank/iscsi3 FS was clean and contain nothing - it was destroyed without an issue. But tank/iscsi2 and tank/iscsi1 contained a lot of information. I tried zfs destroy tank/iscsi2 -r After some time my computer hang out. I rebooted computer. It didn't boot very fast, HDDs starts working like a crazy making a lot of noise, after 15 minutes HDDs stopped go crazy and OS booted at last. All seems to be ok - tank/iscsi2 was destroyed. After file systems at the tank was accessible, zpool status showed no corruption. I issued new command: zfs destroy tank/iscsi1 -r Situation was repeated - after some time my computer hang out. But this time ZFS seams not to healed itself. After computer switched on it started to work: loading scripts and kernel modules, after zfs starting to work it hanging my computer. I need to recover else ZFS file systems which lying in the same zpool. Few month ago I backup OS to flash drive. Booting from backed-up OS and import have the same results - OS starts hanging. How to recover my data at ZFS tank?

• Launcher icon size and window behavior broken

  I have installed the nvidia driver for my graphic card, just following some tutorials what works fine now. After this I could set the Icon size of the launcher, windows had a nice litte shadow, resolution was better and the windows showed up a nice effect when popping up an or when bringing to full-screen... But today the this was just gone after reboot. What could this be? Nvidia xserver-settings are availible. I installed and reinstalled wine1.5 via the apt-get commands, so this might broke something. What can do to fix this again? Greetings philipp EDIT: I went on searching and all i found was that this problem might be connected to the mode of unit, so there is 2d and 3d, but could also be something else, just because setting the mode brings no change. EDIT 2: the version of Ubuntu is: 12.04 and it is a 64 bit environment the graphic card is: GeForce GT 330M Edit 3: Using maps.google in webGL mode does not work anymore too, it was working yesterday. EDIT 4: the screenshot. btw: I think that blender is not working anymore too... EDIT: 5 I think that the problem is closely connected to this output
