  • How does the Windows RENAME command interpret wildcards?

    How does the Windows RENAME (REN) command interpret wildcards? The built in HELP facility is of no help - it doesn't address wildcards at all. The Microsoft technet XP online help isn't much better. Here is all it has to say regarding wildcards: "You can use wildcards (* and ?) in either file name parameter. If you use wildcards in filename2, the characters represented by the wildcards will be identical to the corresponding characters in filename1." Not much help - there are many ways that statement can be interpretted. I've managed to successfully use wildcards in the filename2 parameter on some occasions, but it has always been trial and error. I haven't been able to anticipate what works and what doesn't. Frequently I've had to resort to writing a small batch script with a FOR loop that parses each name so that I can build each new name as needed. Not very convenient. If I knew the rules for how wildcards are processed then I figure I could use the RENAME command more effectively without having to resort to batch as often. Of course knowing the rules would also benefit batch development. (Yes - this is a case where I am posting a paired question and answer. I got tired of not knowing the rules and decided to experiment on my own. I figure many others may be interested in what I discovered)

  • Excel 2007 - Adding line breaks in a cell and no line over 50 characters

    I have notes stored in an excel cell. I add line breaks and dates every time I add a new note. I need to copy this to another program, but it has a line limit of 50 characters. I want a line break for each new date and for when each date's comment goes over 50 characters. I'm able to do one or the other, but I can't figure out how to do both. I'd prefer words not to be split up, but at this point I don't care. Below is some sample input. If needed for a SUBSTITUTE or REPLACE function, I could add a ~ before each date in my input as a delimiter. Sample Input: 07/03 - FU on query. Copies and history included. CC to Jane Doe and John Public 06/29 - Cust claiming not to have these and wrong PO on query form. Responded with inv sent dates and locations, correct PO values, and copies. 06/27 - New ticket opened using query form 06/12 - Opened ticket with helpdesk asking status 05/21 - Copy submitted to [email protected] 05/14 - Copy sent to John Public and [email protected] Ideal Output: 07/03 - FU on query.   • Is there a command-line utility app which can locate a specific block of lines in a text file?

    The text "search and replace" utility programs I've seen, seem to only search on a line-by-line basis... Is there a command-line tool which can locate one block of lines (in a text file), and replace it with another block of lines.? For example: Does the test file file contain this exact group of lines: 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. 'Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!' I want this, so that I can replace multiple lines of text in a file and know I'm not overwriting the wrong lines. I would never replace "The Jabberwocky" (Lewis Carroll), but it makes a novel example :)

  • Comparing 2 (or 3 Files If Possible) "Line By Line"

    I want to find out the differences of 2 (or 3 files if possible) line by line. Diff utils can do this, however it gives inaccurate results. Because, 2 files have exact number of lines which is "134". But diff gives me "Added Lines" and "Removed Lines". However this is wrong, they have exact the same number of lines, there is no added or removed lines. The text files which I want to find differences of them, have only numbers written, maybe that's why that algortihm fails. I couldn't find any option to prevent that, however I may be wrong, I mean there should be an option for that, but again, I couldn't find. This is what I get (5am.txt vs 6am.txt, there is a huge problem): This is what I want (6am.txt vs 7am.txt, still has problems): But, first the first image still has this problem, at the last lines. Edit: After I figured out that there is no utility to do this, I handled myself. I almost did the same thing as what RedGrittyBrick have done. This script imitates diff utility so I (or you) can use it with diff2html.     Hi all, In C++ an interface can be implemented by a class with all its methods pure virtual. Such a class could be part of a library to describe what methods an object should implement to be able to work with other classes in the library: class Lib::IFoo { public: virtual void method() = 0; }; : class Lib::Bar { public: void stuff( Lib::IFoo & ); }; Now I want to to use class Lib::Bar, so I have to implement the IFoo interface. For my purposes I need a whole of related classes so I would like to work with a base class that guarantees common behavior using the NVI idiom: class FooBase : public IFoo // implement interface IFoo { public: void method(); // calls methodImpl; private: virtual void methodImpl(); }; The non-virtual interface (NVI) idiom ought to deny derived classes the possibility of overriding the common behavior implemented in FooBase::method(), but since IFoo made it virtual it seems that all derived classes have the opportunity to override the FooBase::method(). If I want to use the NVI idiom, what are my options other than the pImpl idiom already suggested (thanks space-c0wb0y).

  • Use interface between model and view in ASP.NET MVC

    Hi, I am using asp.net MVC 2 to develop a site. IUser is used to be the interface between model and view for better separation of concern. However, things turn to a little messy here. In the controller that handles user sign on: I have the following: IUserBll userBll = new UserBll(); IUser newUser = new User(); newUser.Username = answers[0].ToString(); newUser.Email = answers[1].ToString(); userBll.AddUser(newUser); The User class is defined in web project as a concrete class implementing IUser. There is a similar class in DAL implementing the same interface and used to persist data. However, when the userBll.AddUser is called, the newUser of type User can't be casted to the DAL User class even though both Users class implementing the interface (InvalidCastException). Using conversion operators maybe an option, but it will make the dependency between DAL and web which is against the initial goal of using interface. Any suggestions?

I want to know how does my controller know to go to the MatterDAL implementation of the Interface IMatterDAL. What if I have another class called MatterDAL2 which is based on the interface. How will my controller know then to call the right method? I am sorry if this is a stupid question, this is baffling me.

  • iphone dev: UIImageview subclass interface builder - how to call custom initializer

    hi. I messing with iphone developement. I have a uiimageview subclass that I want to use to detect touches. I have sucessfully added to interfacebuilder and I can detect a touch in my UIImageview subclass within my application so all is good on that front. however my UIImageView subclass has a custom initializer which is not called when it is created in interface builder. if I manually initialize the UIImageview and add it programmatically I think it will work but then I lose the ability to 'see' my positioning in Interface builder. how can I either 1) 'see' a uiimageview in interface builder that is added in code? (not possible?) 2) call my custom initializer when the subclass is instantiated in interfacebuilder. thanks

The interfaces contain member functions with different signatures but the same name: public interface IFoo { function doStuff(input:int):void; } public interface IBar { function doStuff(input1:String, input2:Number):void; } public class FooBar implements IFoo, IBar { // ??? } In C# this problem can be solved with explicit interface implementations, but as far as I can tell ActionScript does not have that feature.
