  • A good file management/hosting/storage web service with embed-function?

    I am looking for a file management web service that lets me integrate the directory-view into a commercial website. Another requirement: User can register themselves, but need to be approved, before being able to download files. So something like box.net, but with more than just a a flash-widget.     I have a remote Windows 2008 machine and the task at hand is to share out parts of its filesystem via SFTP for a single user. Were commercial software an option things would be easy but I want freeware. After trying out several different candidates such as Core FTP Mini SFTP Server, SilverShield and freeFTPd none them really qualified - either connection issues, zero configurability or bugs. Is there a free and stable SFTP server for Windows 2008 which works out of the box?

  • is it possible to synchronize the states of TCP proxies in real time (for real-high-availability of SLB)?

    Consider that there are two server load balancers working in the tcp proxy mode (e.g., for L7 load balancing). Is it possible to synchronize their states in real time so that they can be a backup for each other? in case that one is down, the other still has all necessary states to uninterruptedly support all existing TCP connections. I understand that this is hard, but I am wondering whether any free/commercial LB already supports this feature. Thank you!

  • VM Virtual guest machine disk defrag improves performance, myth or reality?

    In operation of a virtual Vmware or Hyper-V guest typically advice is given to defrag the host and virtual disk images so to result in improved performance. Something like a cmd: vmware-vdiskmanager -d <file.vmdk> works great. Yet I can't find any qualitive evidence that suggest defraging inside the guest VM improves performance. Does anyone have advice or evidence that doesn't come from a commercial defragger's whitepaper that suggests inside guest defragging helps?

The locked folder should be displayed to user as password protected folder, when user try to open the folder, it should ask password. When the user enters correct password it should open, otherwise it should throw an error. Is there any application with this quality? I searched a lot, but I could not find any.

    I am writing a small desktop GUI application using Ruby and Gtk2. I am using RubyMine 3 on Linux (Fedora). I created a simple class to create a Gtk Window but now I feel it takes more time to just keep adding code for a Button, Drop Down and TextBox etc. I need to write even more code if the DropDown needs to be populated at run-time. Is there any Ruby Gtk IDE which supports adding Controls with simple drag-n-drop? At least I can focus on the business logic instead of just defining position and sizes of controls. One more question. I subscribed to Ruby-Forum mailing list but it is often flooded with Spam. Which is the official Ruby forum? Recently NetBeans has withdrawn support for Ruby. Is it worth to learn Ruby seriously and use it in commercial environment or not?

  • Why is VB so popular?

    To me, Visual Basic seems clumsy, ugly, error-prone, and difficult to read. I'll let others explain why. While VB.net has clearly been a huge leap forward for the language in terms of features, I still don't understand why anyone would choose to code in VB over, say, C#. However, I still see (what seems to be) the vast majority of commercial web apps from "MS shops" are built in VB. I could stand corrected on this, but VB still seems more popular than it deserves. Can anyone help answer any (or all) of these questions: Am I missing something with VB? Is it easier to learn, or "friendlier" than C#? Are there features I don't know about? Why is VB/VB.net so frequently used today, especially in web projects?

    I just wanted to get some opinions on the best "web site copying" software out there (free or commercial is fine). I have a site that I've recently become responsible for managing, and the previous consultant has not provided operating system access. As such, the plan is to re-host the web site. I realize there are a lot of different issues to consider in doing this. However, I don't have much choice in the matter now. The plan is to use web site copying software (ala HTTrack) to "rip" the web site, and then modify what is downloaded back in to a maintainable site. This, of course, involves HTML, css, javascript, etc on the front-end. I'd like to recover as much of the site as possible to make re-creating it as easy as possible. Your input is appreciated.   • iPhone Peripherals for Retailers

    I saw RedLaser on the latest "Shopper" iPhone commercial on TV. Works great for consumers, but retailers will be more interested in a true barcode reader from someone like Infinite Peripherals, which also comes with a magstripe reader I previously mentioned the offerings from Square Verifone, and Mophie that allow swiping credit cards with an iPhone as well. So what's next? There's a decent list at WireLust that includes an IR dongle that turns your iPhone into a TV remote, armband monitors for use when exercising, and most recently a NFC/RFID reader. iCarte from Canadian firm Wireless Dynamics looks interesting. This device can be used for NFC payments and for reading RFID tags. The Canon printer I just bought for home has an iPhone app that lets me send iPhone pictures directly to the printer for printing. In that same vein, Seems like retailers could use bluetooth to print receipts on strategically place printers on the floor. I can't wait to see what they come up with for the iPad.
