• My Reverse DNS PTR record seems to be right, but I'm still getting bouncing email

  Hello, I have a service (statusme.com) where I let people know (for example) that their kid's soccer games are cancelled because of bad weather. We send out emails to the people who have registered. I have a second server as a backup, (vps.statusme.com) and I've set up the application to send some of the email through the second server. But I'm getting complaints from various recipient SMTP servers that the email is considered spam. So I did some investigating, and it appears that they think my reverse DNS record isn't correct. But when I look at it via various rDNS websites and instructions I found elsewhere on ServerFault, everything looks correct: jb$ host -t a vps.statusme.com 8.8.8.8 Using domain server: Name: 8.8.8.8 Address: 8.8.8.8#53 Aliases: vps.statusme.com has address 66.84.8.246 jb$ host -t ptr 246.8.84.66.in-addr.arpa 8.8.8.8 Using domain server: Name: 8.8.8.8 Address: 8.8.8.8#53 Aliases: 246.8.84.66.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer vps.statusme.com. • How to share text, pictures and video to restricted set of users

  I want to share pictures and videos of my kid growing up but I don't want it to be open to the public. I just want me and my wife to be able to add material and then share with grandparents and friends who would be given a username/password or some other solution that authenticates them. This content would preferably be available remotely over the internet or downloaded periodically to the allowed viewers computers. The second option most likely means they would have to install a client, which I am not too fond of doing (I would have to ask them to install it, help configure for different platforms, ...) I'm at the start but I would like software that also allows export of the data (if one day I want to migrate to a different solution). Folder sharing I don't know if Windows folder sharing is reliable, robust and safe enough to share over the internet. Dropbox could be a software solution, but it's limited to 2GB and requires receivers to also install and configure software. A folder is just a collection of files, so it would be harder to keep them organized with text describing the pictures/video Email I could email the content every now and then but videos are almost always too big to go as attachments This would also not provide a history of updates to anyone just recently joining in Are there other solutions to achieve this? NOTE: I also thought that software to run a local or remote blog could be an option but we aren't allowed to ask those questions on superuser because one admin doesn't like cloud-computing questions. But if you do think it's the best approach and can suggest a solution, do state it in the answers anyway!

• Another question about ASP.NET MVC and a separate project for helper classes

  I know this topic has been discussed to death, but there is one thing that I can't wrap my head around. I'm working on a Web Application using ASP.NET MVC and I come across a scenario where I need a helper class (this usually happens in the early stages of development. So I go ahead and create a helper project in my solution that I use to manage all of my Helper Classes. Now, do I have to build that project and dump the dll in the bin directory every time I make changes to is, or is there a way to have the main web application reference the classes contained within the separate project without the separate build process? I'm just looking for the easiest way to add helper classes without the hastel of building and moving the dll every time I make a change or addition. Also, sorry for the very newbie-esque question here. All of the web apps I've build in the past have all been in the same project (web forms, App_Code, etc).

• Firefox 17 and CSS borders based triangles = crap

  Like many front-end devs, I've been using the border trick to render triangles in CSS. http://apps.eky.hk/css-triangle-generator/ this generator helps with the technique. Today, like every week (almost), the Firefox team released a new version without any clear changelog on the rendering engine. Now we can see an ungraceful gray border around those triangles. I haven't found a trick to get rid of it yet. On top of that, before Firefox 17, when people were complaining about how aliased those triangles looked, an additional trick was to set the border-style property to "dashed" instead of solid. Using firebug on the triangle generator, you can quickly see how it shows up now, and cry yourself to death. I hope a more brillant front-end dev than myself will find a fix for this and share it here. Thanks

• Which rdfa parser for java that supports currently used rdfa attributes?

  I am building an app in Java using Jena for semantic information scraping. I am looking for a RDFa parser that would allow me to correctly extract all the rdfa statements. Specifically, one that extracts info about namespaces used and presuming that rdfa tags are correct in the page produces correct triples, ones that distinguish between object and data properties. I went through all rdfa parsers from the site http://rdfa.info/wiki/Consume for Java. They all struggle to extract any rdfa statements and if they do not crash, Jena RDFa parser shows plenty of errors and then dies a terrible death, the data is of little use as it is incorrectly processed and generally mixed up. I am newbie in this area so please be gentle:) I was also thinking of using a library written in different language but then again I don't really know how to plug it into Java code. Any suggestions?

• #define vs enum in an embedded environment (How do they compile?)

  This question has been done to death, and I would agree that enums are the way to go. However, I am curious as to how enums compile in the final code- #defines are just string replacements, but do enums add anything to the compiled binary? Or are they both equivalent at that stage. When writing firmware and memory is very limited, is there any advantage, no matter how small, to using #defines? Thanks! EDIT: As requested by the comment below, by embedded, I mean a digital camera. Thanks for the answers! I am all for enums!

• Android NDK R5 and support of C++ exception

  Hi, I am trying to use the NDK 5 full C++ gnustl: sources/cxx-stl/gnu-libstdc++/README states: This implementation fully supports C++ exceptions and RTTI. But all attempts using exceptions fail. An alternative NDK exists on http://www.crystax.net/android/ndk-r4.php. Even the hello-jni example from that site does not work. Compliation works after creating an Application.xml with APP_STL := gnustl_static But it dies the same horrific death as my own experiments. Am I am missing something or is the statement in the README just plain wrong?

• Windows 8 install app for multiple user accounts

  I purchased Adera episode 2 intending to play through it with my son. We each have our own user account on the same PC. When my son logged in, he was prompted to purchase the app which I had already purchased, installed, and played on the same PC. So I checked the Terms of Use. After selecting an app in the store, there is a Terms of Use link on the left side under the Install button. It is almost impossible to identify it as a link unless you put your mouse over it. The Terms of Use are standard across all apps in the store, not specific to particular apps. The terms of use indicates that the app may be installed on up to five devices, but says nothing about multiple user accounts on those devices. However, this Microsoft blog article indicates that it is allowed. Say, for example, that your family has a shared PC. You have previously used your Microsoft account to purchase a game that all your kids like to play. You can install it for each of your kids by having each of them sign in to their Windows accounts on the shared PC, then launch the Store and sign in to the Store using your own Microsoft account. There, you’ll see all your apps and you can re-install the app on your kid’s Windows account. Installing apps on multiple user accounts on a shared PC still only counts as one of the five allowable PCs where you can install apps. So I have two questions: Is it permissible under the Terms of Use to install the app under multiple accounts on the same device? If so, how do I do so given that my son has already signed into the store using his own Microsoft account.

• Drupal 7: Unable to find the wrapper "public"

  Can anyone help me with this major issue I have. I have downloaded my Drupal 7 site running fine on current server, but I cant run it on localhost or on the new server where I am trying to move it... It just gives me the "White Screen of Death"... and after commenting "set_error_handler" in boostrap.inc, I find out that the errors are all related to "public://" wrapper. • What is the correct way to bootstrap Drupal with Kohana 3?

  Hi, I am trying to implement single sign on between an existing Drupal site a Kohana 3 based webapp. Ideally I would like to load Drupal's session information into $GLOBALS using the bootstap: require_once('../includes/bootstrap.inc'); drupal_bootstrap(DRUPAL_BOOTSTRAP_SESSION); A post on the Kohana forum suggested that this should be placed in Kohana's index.php, but didn't say where. I've tried right at the start, and just before Kohana's own bootstrap, but both result in a White Screen of Death. Changing the bootstrap level to DRUPAL_BOOTSTRAP_CONFIGURATION works, but the session data isn't loaded. Any bootstrap level above DRUPAL_BOOTSTRAP_ACCESS results in a WSOD. If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it!

• How to avoid becoming a programmer while still beign closely involved with computer science/Industry

  I am studying computer science (A masters at an Ivy league), however most of the jobs i find involve way too much of programming. And frankly programming is not an issue, however programming without a meaning (read financial institution (non trading), other non mainstream jobs) bore me to death! I dont want to end up becoming a .NET,C#, Java kind of programmer. Can someone tell where i should look for jobs if i wish to do some real computer science work such as Machine Learning etc. I don't mind programming but becoming a Financial Software dev at Bloomeberg or an SDET at Microsoft isn't actually one of my goals. • Does Python Django support custom SQL and denormalized databases with no Foreign Key relationships?

  I've just started learning Python Django and have a lot of experience building high traffic websites using PHP and MySQL. What worries me so far is Python's overly optimistic approach that you will never need to write custom SQL and that it automatically creates all these Foreign Key relationships in your database. The one thing I've learned in the last few years of building Chess.com is that its impossible to NOT write custom SQL when you're dealing with something like MySQL that frequently needs to be told what indexes it should use (or avoid), and that Foreign Keys are a death sentence. Percona's strongest recommendation was for us to remove all FKs for optimal performance. Is there a way in Django to do this in the models file? create relationships without creating actual DB FKs? Or is there a way to start at the database level, design/create my database, and then have Django reverse engineer the models file?

• Squid+iptables: how do i allow https to pass-through and bypassing Squid?

  Hello, Basically started with Squid and iptables today (google is your friend). This stuff is going to be the death of me. I have Squid3 setup on Ubuntu 9.04 server as Transparent Proxy. It works sweetly when i use the proxy-box as my default gateway etc. The iptable rules for this setup was part of the tutorial. :P I can unfortunately not access https sites (such as Gmail or anything on port 443 basically). This is because Squid dont like what it cannot cache, which in this case is the https traffic. I would like to add an iptable rule so that i can basically access https sites and use Skype. Basically allow these types of traffic to pass through without going through Squid proxy? (bypassing it so to speak) Would anyone perhaps know how to do this or have a link to any sources that would assist me in figuring it out? Thank you.

• Event is causing an error, but I can't catch the exception

  A developer has created a custom control in ASP.NET using VB.NET. The custom control uses a repeater. In certain scenarios, the rpt_ItemDataBound event is encountering a data error. My goal is rather than having the user see the yellow screen of death, give the user a friendlier error explaining exactly what the data error is. I figured I would be able to use a Try/Catch block as shown below throw the exception, however, it appears that the event has nowhere to be thrown to and stops executing at the "End Try" line. Protected Sub rpt_ItemDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.RepeaterItemEventArgs) Handles rpt1.ItemDataBound, rpt2.ItemDataBound Try ProcessBadData... Catch ex As Exception Throw ex End Try End Sub In VB.NET, I can find where the repeater's DataSource is being set, however, I can not find a DataBind event. Any ideas how I can capture the exception in this ASCX control so I can report it to the user?

• IE 6 dropdown selection area too narrow

  Hi, I have a dropdown menu with the width set to 142px however the selection area when you drop down the menu needs to be larger as it has text that exceeds this width. Firefox (and most modern browsers) is clever and extends the selection area to fit in this text. However IE 6 and unchecked newer versions of IE do not show this text and keep the selection area the same width as the dropdown unclicked. The problem lies here, how can I get IE to extend the selection area where you click the selection you want without increasing the width of the dropdown area with out the dropdown selection showing. However, one of the crucial elements of my BB that I love to death is the global inbox of all my email accounts. (not to mention the BB messenger, but I can live without that).   So due to a recent act of stupidity and bravado, I uttered the words "backups! who needs backups?!" and what followed was the tragic loss of 260gb of data. This scenario in particular is requiring me to recover a repartitioned hard disk, but I was wondering what tools people here use in general to recover lost data. I'm sure everyone has been there, either accidentally rewriting files, resaving an old version, computer crash, hard disk death, user deletes an important document etc. So was thinking it might be an interesting point of discussion as to what you guys use to recover lost data.   How do you sort out the good buzz from the bad buzz? - I really need your help here :) I see a lot of buzz-words nowadays, both here on SO and in school. For example, we had a teacher who everyone respected, who said "be careful about gold-plating and death-by-interfacing". Now, everyone and their mama cries whenever I'm creating an interface.. Another example would be here on SO where lately "premature optimization is the root of all evil", so everytime someone asks a perfomance question, he'll get that sentence thrown in his face. A few months ago I remember it was all about NHibernate in here, etc., etc... These things comes and goes, but only the good buzz stays. Now, how do you seperate the good from the bad? By reading blogs from respected persons? By trying to come to a conclusion on your own, and then try to convince others that you're right? By simply ignoring it?

  Does the .NET String.Format method allow placement of a string at a fixed position within a fixed length string. • Scheduling a visual studio load test using powershell giving me BSOD

  I have a visual studio load test which I want to run every hour so that I can start to collect some data. To do this, I thought it would be best to make a little powershell script and put a command like this inside: Invoke-Expression -command "& '$env:VS100COMNTOOLS..\IDE\mstest.exe' /testcontainer:"C:\Users\benb\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\BBPerformanceTest\bin\Debug\HomePageOnly.loadtest"" That command works fine, but sometimes when its run I get a blue screen of death. However, when I run my load test through the visual studio GUI, I never get a BSOD. two questions: is it possible to avoid this BSOD? Is there another way I can schedule my load test? Thanks

  Yesterday Microsoft announced the release candidate of Internet Explorer 9, which is very close to the final product. Here’s a screenshot tour of the most interesting new stuff, as well as answers to your questions. The most important question is should you install this version? And the answer is absolutely yes. Even if you don’t use IE, it’s better to have a newer, more secure version on your PC. What’s New Under the Hood in Release Candidate vs Beta? If you want to see the full list of changes with all the original marketing detail, you can read Microsoft’s Beauty of the Web page, but here’s the highlights that you might be interested in. Improved Performance – they’ve made a lot of changes, and it really feels faster, especially when using more intensive web apps like Gmail. Power Consumption Settings – since the JavaScript engine in any browser uses a lot of CPU power, they’ve now integrated it into the power settings, so if you’re on battery it will use less CPU, and save battery life. This is really a great change. UI Changes – The tab bar can now be moved below the address bar (see below for more), they’ve shaved some pixels off the design to save space, and now you can toggle the Menu bar to be always on. Pinned Sites – now you can pin multiple pages to a single taskbar button. Very useful if you always use a couple web apps together. You can also pin a site in InPrivate mode. FlashBlock and AdBlock are Integrated (sorta) – there’s a new ActiveX filtering that lets you enable plug-ins only for sites you trust. There’s also a tracking protection list that can block certain content (which can obviously be used to block ads). Geolocation – while a lot of privacy conscious people might complain about this, if you use your laptop while traveling, it’s really useful to have geo-located features when using Google Maps, etc. Don’t worry, it won’t leak your privacy by default. • Tron: Legacy, 3D goggles, and embedded UA

  The 3D edition of Tron: Legacy opens with embedded user assistance. The film starts with an iconic white-on-black command-prompt message exhorting viewers to keep their 3D glasses on throughout. I can't quote it verbatim, and at the time of writing nor could anybody findable with 5 minutes of googling. But it was something like: "Although parts of the movie are 2D, it was shot in 3D, and glasses should be worn at all times. This is how it was intended to be viewed" Yeah - "intended". That part is verbatim. Wow. Now, I appreciate that even out of the small sub-set of readers who care a rat's ass for critical theory, few will be quite so gung-ho for the whole "death of the author" shtick as I tend to be. And yes, this is ergonomic rather than interpretive, but really - telling an audience how you expect them to watch a movie? That's up there with Big Steve's "you're holding it wrong" Even if it solves the problem, it's pretty arrogant. If anything, it's worse than RTFM. And if enough people are doing it wrong that you have to include the announcement, then maybe - just maybe - you've got a UX and/or design problem. Plus, current 3D glasses are like sitting in a darkened room, cosplaying the lovechild of Spider Jerusalem and Jarvis Cocker. Ok, so that observation was weirder than it was helpful; but seriously, nobody wants to wear the glasses if they don't have to. They ruin the visual experience of the non-3D sections, and personally, I find them pretty disruptive to the suspension of disbelief. This is an old, old, problem, and I'm carping on about it because Tron is enjoyable mass-market slush. It's easier for me to say "no, I can't just put some text on it. It's fundamentally broken, redesign it." in the middle of a small-ish, agile, software project than it would be for some beleaguered production assistant at the end of editing a $200 million movie. But lots of folks in software don't even get to do that. Way more people are going to see Tron, and be annoyed by this, than will ever read a technical communication blog. So hopefully, after two hours of being mildly annoyed, wanting to turn the brightness up, and slowly getting a headache, they'll realise something very, very important: you just can't document your way out of a shoddy UI.

• Not Dead, Just Busy

  So I didn’t die in a freak smelting accident yet, but I have been dealing with a lot of different things.  I had to take a bit of a break to deal with the cat death issue.  I am not fully recovered, because well it just happened a few months ago.  It kind of sucked.  Plus the apartment feels a lot bigger. Then you have the whole New York Comic Con thing where I had to plan some cosplay costumes.  I have been trying to find time to hang out with friends and have a social life.  That plus I built an entire presentation for iOS development for New York Code Camp.  I am also planning a couple MS Community dinners (namely one a week from Tuesday) plus a give camp.  I am also planning a vacation around SPS UK plus I will be at SPC.  Life is just incredibly hectic and when you factor in dating to the mix it’s gotten insane to the point where some day I just have to go dark.  Hence the lack of blogging.  I am just trying to keep up with everything and everyone without losing myself.
