  • Why aren't .NET "application settings" stored in the registry?

    Some time back in the nineties, Microsoft introduced the Windows Registry. Applications could store settings in different hives. There were hives for application-wide and user-specific scopes, and these were placed in appropriate locations, so that roaming profiles worked correctly. In .NET 2.0 and up, we have this thing called Application Settings. Applications can use them to store settings in XML files, app.exe.config and user.config. These are for application-wide and user-specific scopes, and these are placed in appropriate locations, so that roaming profiles work correctly. Sound familiar? What is the reason that these Application Settings are backed by XML files, instead of simply using the registry? Isn't this exactly what the registry was intended for? The only reason I can think of is that the registry is Windows-specific, and .NET tries to be platform-independent. Was this a (or the) reason, or are there other considerations that I'm overlooking?

However, I'd like to be able to change my app settings from within my app. It seems as though there should be some kind of generic way to add this functionality to my app without having to recreate all the controls myself. I mean, the code is already written in apple's settings app. Maybe someone wrote this code and open sourced it? (if it is not already available)

    Hi, In the Settings tab in Visual Studio, I can see Name, Type, Scope, Value table. Define settings is intuitive if the data type is already within the Type drop-down list i.e. integer, string, long etc. But I can't find enum anywhere. How do I save enum settings then? For now, I have the following which clutter my code too much. public enum Action { LOCK = 9, FORCED_LOGOFF = 12, SHUTDOWN = 14, REBOOT, LOGOFF = FORCED_LOGOFF }; and I define Action as int in the setting. Then I have to do, switch (Properties.Settings.Default.Action) { case 9: SetAction(Action.LOCK); break; case 12: SetAction(Action.FORCED_LOGOFF); break; case 14: SetAction(Action.SHUTDOWN); break; case 15: SetAction(Action.REBOOT); break; default: SetAction(Action.LOCK); break; } Would be nice if I could simply do something like SetAction(Properties.Settings.Default.Action); to replace all above but I dont know how to save enum in setting.   • Sound works but cannot change settings or volume

    Volume is always on max. The volume indicator is showing three dashes and does not show anything when I click on it. Clicking the "sound" button in settings causes it to recursively reopen settings. pulseaudio --start doesn't help. EDIT: This has only started happening after the upgrade to 13.10 EDIT 2: This is in Unity, yes. EDIT 3: killall unity-panel-service works and does reload the panels, but previous problems persist.

    I did something weird and now my text size is like 3pt on every system window, but when I go in and change my window fonts to larger to something that looks normal, it makes my clock, bash, and other fonts absolutely gigantic. Is there any way I can just roll back my system and it's settings? It wouldn't be much bother as I installed the OS yesterday. I'd hate to have to reinstall entirely though, but I guess it's an option.

    I have the following contents in my ~/.Xmodmap file. It seems a couple times a day (without rebooting or logging out) I need to rerun the command "xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap" to reset my settings. The only thing I can think is that it seems to happen when I walk away from my computer for a bit. Maybe it forgets the settings when the computer locks itself? remove control = Control_L remove mod1 = Alt_L keycode 64 = Control_L keycode 37 = Alt_L add control = Control_L add mod1 = Alt_L Anyone else seeing similar issues?

  • Desktop goes blurry / granulated

    After few minutes using, desktop and fonts in unity-menu goes blurry. See screenshot.! In all applications (browser etc.) graphics seem to be allright. After rebooting problem disappears for few minutes. Changing the wallpaper also makes the desktop clear (for a while) but fonts are still blurry.     I've had a few install rounds with ubuntu ever since 8.04 and has worked flawlessly every time. However, for some reason, when I try to click either System Settings or Software Center, the icon pulses as if it were working to come up but never does. The same goes for System Settings. I would expect that a password dialog would appear, but nothing shows. Is there bug with 11.10 that didn't exist with 11.04?

  • Automatically change resolution when not in dock

    I have Ubuntu 11.04 (yep, I know it's old news) on my Lenovo W520. At home, I have a dock with dual monitors. I have a pretty decent setup - things work almost perfectly (hence the reason I'm reluctant to upgrade... that and I'm not 100% sold on Unity). Anyway, the only annoyance I have is that when I'm on travel, I use the laptop screen. When I un-dock the laptop, I need to manually go into nvidia x-server settings and change the resolution from 'Auto' to 1920x1200, or it will think I have two screens, and my mouse pointer will be able to go way off the left side of the screen. This isn't a big deal, but I need to do it every time I restart the x-server (so if I reboot, or have to kill it, etc...) What would be really nice is if there was a way for it to automatically detect whether or not there is external monitors (which it seems to do already), and switch into the mode I select, depending on which monitors are connected. Is there any way to accomplish this?     Hello, I would like to buy a new Eee PC 1001HA or 1101HA. I know the max display resolution is: 1024x600 for eeePC 1001 and 1366x768 for eeePC 1101 But what's the max resolution of the graphic board when connecting these two types of eeePC to an external LCD monitor??? Let's say the external LCD monitor supports a full HD resolution of 1920x1080, are these eeePC graphic boards able to go up to such resolution??? It's really incredible to me, how such a useful information is missing everywhere on every ASUS website. Eee PC are very well suited to be connected to external monitor, so I can't believe how difficult is to find out this information. I downloaded aldo the manual, but it's not in there too.   • How can I stop my laptop display from flickering when I connect my TV?

    I have a laptop with an HDMI output port running Vista, and an HDTV with HDMI input ports. The laptop is set to extend its desktop onto a second monitor. When I connect the computer to the TV with an HDMI cable, my laptop screen usually flickers rapidly. Most of the time it lasts for about 30 seconds, but sometimes it lasts for several minutes and once in a while it doesn't happen at all. It wouldn't be so bad except that the cursor moves back to the center of the laptop screen with each flicker, so I can't really do anything until the machine decides it's ready to calm down. I haven't been able to find any pattern at all for the causes or duration of the flickering. It doesn't seem to matter what programs the laptop is running when I connect it to the TV, whether I enable the extended display before or after I connect the TV or which HDMI port/cable I use. What could be causing this, and how can I make it go away?

  • How to output to S-Video on Windows XP in single-monitor mode (clone display)?

    I am using an IBM ThinkPad T30 running Windows XP. It is connected to a TV system via S-Video output. Windows is currently set up in multi-monitor mode with monitor 2 being output to S-Video. However, since there is no preview monitor, I can't interact with anything I drag to monitor 2 as I can't see it. I would rather have the system set up so that there is only one monitor and the output is cloned to the laptop display and S-Video. This allows me to see what I'm doing on the TV system. Is this possible?

  • Lost desktop settings in KDE

    After next unsuccessful attempt to install ATI fglrx drivers, when I also changed GRUB config a bit (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="radeon.modeset=0 and GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"). When I restored everything to default (uninstalled fglrx, restored default values in GRUB config and xorg.conf) KDE logged me into completely new desktop, with (I suppose) default configuration. Is there a way to restore my previous desktop settings? What could be the cause? SOLVED: Something was messed out with display settings. Search for 'Display Configuration' and there deselect one display. Or is there a better option?
