• Anyway I can trick Carbonite into backing up an external hard drive?

  I use carbonite to back up my PC (Windows XP). We were running low on disk space on our home PC (down to 15 gig) so I went out and purchased an external hard drive. However, Carbonite will not back it up. I just want the external drive to be extra disk space. From their FAQ: The current version of Carbonite backs up only the files that reside on permanent hard drives on your computer. It will not back up network drives, external drives, and NAS (network accessed storage) drives. If there are files on a remote drive that you wish to include in your Carbonite backup, you should copy the files to a folder on your local hard drive. If the files are on a shared network drive, you could install Carbonite on the computer on which the network shared drive physically exists, and back the files up directly from that computer. Check back soon for a Carbonite service plan that will allow you to back up your external drives.

• How to enable Jetty to support cometd/reverse ajax while let it listen to port 80?

  I would like to use cometd / reverse ajax capability of Jetty 7. I tried to configure it so it listen to port 80, instead of 8080. However, according to http://jetty.mortbay.org/jetty5/faq/faq%5Fs%5F200-General%5Ft%5Fapache.html , Apache can be configured as a HTTP/1.1 proxy to pass selected request to the Jetty using the HTTP/1.1 protocol. This is simple to configure and use, but current versions of the apache mod_proxy do not support persistent connections. As far as I know, the reverse ajax in jetty is depending on continuation (I guess it is persistent connection). So how to let jetty support reverse ajax, while coexist with apache server? Thanks.

• External TV only allows 640x480 using VGA cable

  I have Ubuntu precise installed on a MacBook Pro. When connecting to an external television using a VGA style cable the highest resolution available seems to be 640x480. I'm using the proprietary NVIDEA Accelerated Graphics Driver (version current) and attempting to setup the TV using the nvidea-settings tool. I know all the equipment supports higher resolutions because of the following: Prior to rebuilding my machine with precise, the same TV, cabel & adapter gave higher resolutions The same machine & TV when used with a HDMI cable allows higher resolutions Windows laptops with the same cable & TV are able to achieve higher resolutions I'm not sure what to look for next, there are some similar FAQ questions but I'm not sufficiently familiar with the areas involved to know if these are my issue or are safe to try. Specifically: colord problem & my monitor resolution 640*480 with no other options! - is the closest, but as I'm having no problems with the main laptop monitor I'm not sure the described symptoms apply. I can't work out from the answer or Bumblebee site how to determine if nvidia optimus applies to my laptop. Why isn't my monitor's native resolution appearing as an option? - suggests configuring X by hand, but doesn't entirely match the symptoms I'm seeing

• Forking a GPL dual licensed software with business owned copyrights

  After receiving some threats of the copyrights holder of a dual licensed software(GPL2 and commercial) to buy the commercial version for projects in production, I am thinking to make a fork. In a case of GPL2 and commercially dual licensed with business owned copyrights software, is forking the GPL2 version an option? Also, is forking a good way to deal with such cases? Background information The software is a web CMS released under 2 versions a GPL2 free open source edition and a commercial edition including technical support and extra functionality. The problem is that now, basing their argumentation on the "distribution" definition of the GPL2, the company holding the copyrights argue that delivering the software and some extensions to a client is considered as a "distribution". And that such a "distribution" falls under the GPL2 obligation to release the custom made extension code. Custom made extensions are mainly designs, templates and very specific functionality. Basically they give me 3 choices: Buying the commercial licensed edition for projects based on the GPL in production, Deleting all the projects in production based on GPL2 version, Releasing all the extensions as GPL2 code. The first 2 options are nothing realistic for finished projects. The third option could be fine, but as most of the extensions are very specific, cleaning the code to make it usable by other users means lot of works and also I am not sure the clients will appreciate to have their website designs and specific functionality released publicly. The copyrights holding company even contacted some clients directly, giving them the "choice". I know that this is a very corporate interpretation of GPL2, and a such action is nothing close to legal, but as an independent developer, I don't want to take the risk to get involved in some long and tiring legal procedures. PS. This question was first asked on Stack Overflow where it felt out of the scope and closed, after reading the present site FAQ, discussing about software licensing seems fine.

• YouTube custom thumbnails feature availability

  I've been trying to figure out this on my own for weeks, but now I give up. 'Custom thumbnails' feature on YouTube is such a controversial one, it was changed so much... so much that even FAQ on YouTube doesn't fully describe it's features (as I see). I have a YouTube channel for one of my websites. This YouTube channel is main marketing force for my website - it brings all the boys to my yard (I mean, website). So I have to use all the hacky-tricky stuff to increase my visibility on youtube. And damn, those custom thumbnails are giving me hard times... As far as I understand, this is current state of 'custom thumbnail' feature: "If your account is in good standing, you may have the ability to upload custom thumbnails for your video uploads." (c) https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/138008 My channel has good standing, has more than 50000 views. So why the hell my account is still not eligible for this feature? anyone have any idea?

• Install additional PHP version in different folder on Ubuntu 8.04

  Hi, I'm on a Host Europe VPS running Ubuntu 8.04 server. PHP version is 5.2.4. Now there is an application (Moodle 2.0) that needs at least PHP 5.2.8. I don't want to upgrade serverwide to PHP 5.2.8 because that might impair other applications (e.g. Plesk). The FAQ at Host Europe suggest to install an additional PHP 5.2.8 in /opt/php and I think I can handle that with $ dpkg -i php_..._.deb --root /opt/php (Is that correct, by the way?) However, how do I point Apache to the new PHP installation? Thanks for any advice, Ralf

• Trouble Installing Codecs libx264 AND libmp3lame

  I am trying to use OpenShot for movie making. My ideal situation is to encode for the web HD, 30 Frames Per Second, to YouTube. This works out great as OpenShot has a setting for this. The problem is when i go to use it I get: "The following formats/codecs are missing from your system: libx264 libmp3lame You will not be able to use the selected export profile. You will need to install the missing formats/codecs or choose a different export profile." I have tried using Synaptic Package Manager and I think I am installing the right "plugins/codecs" yet to no avail or success. I used the instructions found here to remedy: https://answers.launchpad.net/openshot/+faq/1040 I know this impacts OTHER video editing software (in other words it is not specific just to OpenShot). They give the same type of error message when i try to use their presets as well. So in a word "Help!"... Any info is much appreciated!!! PS - If you know of a BETTER way to do this (another software) that is appreciated too! :-D

• What sorts of tools make a Django Developer valuable? [closed]

  I am a Django Consultant and I want to increase the value that I provide to clients. My first question was an epic failure according to the FAQ. So I'll try again before I delete it. What types of tools should a Django developer have in his tool belt to increase the value to the client? Would a collection of project templates be useful? Are there open-source project templates available that can be forked and altered? Is there a proper way to configure templates to include dependencies for certain types of projects? What about deployment scripts using tools like Puppet or Chef? Does it make a lot of sense to fork Django apps on GitHub and make contributions to open source projects there? Would clients percieve extra value in programmers that are contributing to open source projects? Are there industry best practices for implementing continuous integration in a Django project? I want the answer to be open ended, as I'm at the beginning of my research. I am curious to know what sorts of tools other Django consultants use on a daily and per-project basis, and how they use them.

• How to manage Agile developers working with traditional (serial) business persons?

  Good afternoon, My work environment has some problems. Our IT team is trying to be more agile, but we're not really getting buy-in from the business. They attend our daily stand-ups and sprint reviews, and they help with sprint planning, but then they turn around and do 4 months of requirements gathering for a project before moving forward with a (mostly) serial development style. The sprint goals are things like "get XX% closer to release". For the IT team, they've turned the Sprints into a sort of death march. We end a Sprint one day and start a new Sprint the very next day. There's no reflection or changes done between sprints, only during. Having never done any of the agile methodologies before, I haven't had a very pleasant introduction to them. So my questions are: 1) Should there be some time (perhaps a week or so) between sprints to do the reflection/introspection/changes/etc.? Or are back-to-back-to-back sprints the norm? 2) Is there any chance for survival for an agile team with no agile business counter-parts? If not, are there some transitional methodologies or even tips for moving the business towards an iterative if not necessarily agile mindset? 3) Should your entire team be on every sprint? We have almost 20 programmers on a single sprint but working on completely different projects (typically teams of 3-5, sometimes larger). Is it normal to have a single sprint or should we be trying to manage multiple independent sprints? Should we be trying to keep the multiple sprints in concurrent lockstep or should their timetables be allowed to overlap and be flexible? Any thoughts or advice is appreciated. This is my first time coming over from SO for a question, so please let me know if there are better ways to phrase these kinds of questions (faq was rather helpful, but still not sure I'm following it perfectly). • Cannot create a neutral unit with a trigger

  I've been playing around with the starcraft UMS (Use map settings) for a while and usually i figure things out pretty quickly when im stuck. Alas not this time. I'm trying to place a neutral unit (player 12) using a trigger. It refuses to work. I'm using Scmdraft 2.0 as my editor (but i cant get it to work in other editors either) (all neutral units placed before the game starts are visible and all other triggers work fine. Also i created a text msg and it does displays it in-game so the trigger triggers ) For testing I created a trigger that looks like this: Player: neutral (i tried neutral players player 1 and all players as well) Condition: -always Action: -Create *1 Terran Medic* at '*location 022*' for *Neutral* (also tried neutral players) When I start the game nothing happens. Here is what I tried: I tried placing a start location for neutral player (player 12) I tried changing the owner under map properties of player 12 to neutral and computer from unused which was the default. Although it seems like it should be a common enough problem, I don't see it in any FAQ and I cant find anything about it when I Google it. Thanks in advance.

  I would like to set a network connection as metered. I can't find how to do this; it seems to have changed in the upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1. I tried following the steps in the official metered connection FAQ. However, when I open the connection, there is no Data Usage heading nor a Set as a metered connection option. I tried this on two different computers, both running Windows 8.1. I also tried doing this for both wireless and ethernet adaptors. Here's what the connection screen looks like.   I already created an ssh key for myself sometime in the past. I don't remember "how many bits" it is. How can I tell? I'm wondering because I'm using hosting at nearlyfreespeech.net and their faq says: Can I configure my ssh connection to use a public key? ... we will not install keys that have a length less than 1536 bits ... We prefer that you use a key at least 2048 bits in length, and if you are generating a new key, the recommended length is 4096 bits.

• "No input file specified" - unable to access phpMyAdmin using debian squeeze

  I have installed phpMyAdmin on my VPS LAMP server (Debian Squeeze/Apache2/MySQL/PHP5), but am unable to access it: //my-ip/phpmyadmin/ and //my-domain/phpmyadmin/ both produce the following error message: "No input file specified". The phpMyAdmin FAQ identifies this as a permission problem, but the suggested solution seems not to apply to my situation. Every other solution I have come across involves removing/purging and reinstalling phpmyadmin - which I have done several times, always to the same result. Previous posts in this forum typically relate to Nginx, which I have not installed. Thanks in advance for any help!

• Can I legally make a free clone of a game and use the same name? [closed]

  I gather from Is it legally possible to make a clone of the game? and How closely can a game resemble another game without legal problems that I should not try to profit from a clone if it is using the same assets, and, I presume, the same name. My question is whether it's legal to make a game like "Set" or "Catch Phrase", using the same name, and release it for free. What would I be risking if I did so -- just a take down notice, or could there be financial risk too? Edit: I guess my real question is whether the legal freedom is greater for a free game than one that is trying to make a profit. I just want a version of the game I can play remotely. Edit 2: I don't understand why this is being considered off-topic. I read the FAQ and it says it'S OK to ask questions about project management, which includes Publishing. And naming a game is a key aspect to publishing. That's what my question is about - choosing a legal name for my game with the consideration that I might post/publish it.

• Different color prompts for different machines when using terminal/ssh?

  Hi, I have 5 machines I constantly ssh into to do work. Its getting increasingly frustrating when I am issuing wrong commands on wrong boxes. Luckily I havent done anything bad yet. I wanted to know if there is any hack which I can hardcode which will display my prompt in different colors based on the machine I am ssh into? Such as blue for desktop1, purple for laptop, red for server etc? Is this possible? Currently I am using this command export PS1="\e[0;31m[\u@\h \W]\$ \e[m " taken from here http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/bash-shell-change-the-color-of-my-shell-prompt-under-linux-or-unix/ but it obviously doesnt work across ssh. Also, if you have any other cool bash tips for helping me ease my sight will be wonderful.   So, I'm getting the below error when clicking on Sign Out on my drop down menu on the nav: No route matches [GET] "/user/sign_out" However, this only happens when using the sign out on the drop down nav (the hamburger menu for mobile devices) and not when clicking the sign out on the regular nav.
