  • Building a PC, advice on SSD/Hybrid Hard Drives

    I am looking at building a new PC, it's mainly for office (graphics heavy) use and programming. Looking for good performance with opening and closing programs and files as well as a fast boot. I plan to have 3 primary hard drives Windows 7 Programs (photoshop etc) Current Files (There'll also be a large storage capacity back up drive, but this will be the Seagate drive I already have.) So, my question is, looking at standard "old fashioned" hard drives and SSD drives, obviously there's a massive price difference. Clearly the SSD will have better performance, but: If, for example, I had an SSD for Windows (say about 100gB), that would clearly give me the boot speed I want, then I guess my real questions are: If I were to buy one more SSD, would it give the greatest improvement on standard performance if used to store programs, or currently used files? Given that the OS is on an SSD, should I not bother with the 3 drives and instead, partition that Hybrid drive to store programs and currently used files on it? Obviously, option two is cheaper and option one could cause me storage issues, but that's when I can dump files I am not currently using onto another drive. Any, I am open to suggestions... so what do you suggest?!

  • Going from dev to sysadmin advice [on hold]

    I've seen the threads on here about transitions to/from sysadmin. My story is I am a dev (technology is irrelevant), but in learning that technology it required a lot of server infrastructure. In the last few years, I thus had to setup a lot of infrastructure (AD, DNS, SQL etc) to learn said technology. I've noticed that I've enjoyed doing sysadmin and got quite good at it, and find it even engrossing (e.g. I am amazed by how decievingly complicated AD is, under the hood). I'm now thinking of moving into IT infrastructure after about 4 years in various dev (.NET) roles. Any advice? My concern is that I don't have any experience with hardware load balancers and firewalls like F5 etc, which some jobs require. How could I compensate for that? Also, I'm rubbish with my hands, would this be a factor? (i.e. maintaining physical kit)? Thanks

First thing I chose is Graphics card : ATI HD 7850 2GB DDR5 then matching things up with this selected following: Processor: AMD 3.5 GHz AM3 FX 8320 8 Core Piledriver Mobo: MSI 990FXA-GD65 RAM : 8GB DDR3 (4x2) Is this setup looks compatible? If making any of above component inferior will have negligible affect on performance/gaming(like buying 970 chip mobo instead of 990) then please let me know so I can save some money :) ? Any other advice?

    Hi everyone, My companies currently hardware firewall (an old ZyXEL ZyWALL firewall) and is indeed requiring an update to a new firewall. It is a small company with a similar small server-environment, so the need for a huge, complex and expensive solution isn’t there but a more “straight-forward” firewall, that can provide the necessary security to our systems and block unwanted elements from the core server and only accept access through our one server which is used as an “gateway” between the Internet and our internal network. I haven’t that much experience with hardware firewalls so I’m requesting any good advice and/or knowledge on which products will be suited for our specific need.   • Hard Drive upgrade advice for a Dell PowerEdge 1950

    My setup is a Dell PowerEdge 1950 with 2x 140Gb Hard drives in a RAID 1 configuration. The OS is Windows 2003 Web Edition and disk is partitioned into to two, a 12Gb C: partition and the remainder is the D: drive. Both are very close to full capacity. Ideally I want to replace those drives with 2x 1Tb drives while retaining all data. First of all is this possible without rebuilding the server? If so, will I need any 3rd party software, Symantec Ghost, Partition Master for e.g., to do this? Any general advice as to how to go about doing this?

  • Advice for outdoor wifi hardware and topology

    I haven't setup any wifi networks other than an access point or two at any single location, so I'd like advice on how to setup an outdoor/weatherproof network in an area approximately 150 feet by 200 feet. The interesting thing is there are a pair of pools in the middle of the coverage area. Here is a picture: blue is pool, green is coverage area, yellow is building with wired access. Can anyone advise me on weatherproof APs, antennas and placement for best coverage of the pool deck? I've looked at the Meraki stuff, but I'm thinking it's overkill.

  • ZFS Configuration advice

    I need some advice on configuring ZFS. Here is what I have: Physical Disks: 4x 3 TB 2x 2 TB 2x 1 TB What is the best configuration for my Vdevs and storage pool. I want to maximaze space but still maintain redundancy. Should I just get 2 more 3TB's and just create 2x 3-3TB raid2z storage pools? Create a 1x 4-3TB raidz2 vdev? Can I put redundancy at the pool level and create individual vdevs for each drive and then add 2x 1TB+2TB striped vdevs to keep all vdevs the same size. Keep in mind I do need to migrate data from the smaller drives and am planning on adding more 3tb drives later on. What do you think?

  • Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server does not give out all available licenses

    I installed the Terminal Server role in Windows Server 2003 Standard 64-bits. Still, only 2 connections are allowed. The License Manager says that there are 10 Device CALs available, which is correct, and that none are given out. For good measure I let the server reboot, to no effect. Before this, there was another server (same Windows, except that it is 32 bits) active as a licensing server. I removed the role first and then then added it to the new server. I then removed the Terminal Server Licensing Server component off the old one and added it to the new one. After that, I added to licenses. When that didn't give the required result, I rebooted to new server. Still, the new server, with licenses and all, acts as if it has the 2 license RDP. The server are all stand-alone, there is no active directory been set up. Both servers are in different workgroups. Update (4/12/10): The server has changed the entries in the Terminal Server Licensing a few times. After installing the licenses it added an entry of which the exact phrasing I forgot but it was about temporary Windows 2003 device licenses. Later it added Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL. The temporary held 2 licenses (standard RDP licenses, I think) and the other 10. At some point, seemingly unrelated from the testing we did, it used a licenses from the new pool. This morning, 2 licenses were used from the pool of 10 and only 1 from the temporary/RDP pool (I wish I had screenshots to show, it changed every few hours oir so it seems). Although I had already activated the server over the internet, and re-activated it, I decided to go through the whole procedure by phone. Long story short, here is what it says now: Existing Windows 2000 Server, type:built-in [no licenses used, I add for for sake of being complete] Windows Server 2003 - Terminal Server Per Device CAL Token, type:open [none of 10 used] Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL, type:open [3 of 10 used] As I tried to explain, this is the end result after a few changes, most of which I can't directly connect to any action from my part. Only going to the activation procedure by phone seemed to directly effect the TS, resulting in the above configuration. Still, it is impossible to connect with more than 3 people, which is 1 up from the 2 that could connect yesterday. TS does say 7 licenses are avaible. Yet it won't give them out.

  • computer build for extreme tabbed browsing

    I'm interested in building or buying a task-specific computer for my brother. His requirements are ridiculously simple: the machine has to be able to wait in hundreds of web-based virtual waiting rooms at once and not crash. To be competitive, he needs to be able to enter the waiting rooms an dauto-refresh them faster. My question is, what priority do I give the different specs? My initial surmise is this: Connection speed (nothing to do with my build, but I kind of think this will be more beneficial than anything I build for him) Memory size -- I don't usually see firefox taking up more than a gig, even when heavily tabbed, but I think one gig for the operating system and two gigs for the browser are necessary. Processor speed -- I think the processor will affect performance, but even something out of date will do what he needs Memory speed/RAM bus -- I doubt this will matter much, but it seems just on this side of irrelevant. Everything else is a non-issue for him. Does this seem to stack up correctly? Also, since he's looking to stay on the cheaper side, and I might end up recommending a refurb to him, is there anything particularly egregious that Vista would do if it came pre-installed? If I build it myself, I'll give him linux, but if I have it shipped to him, I'm not sure I could walk him through the install process for linux, but I probably could walk him through the process to upgrade to Windows 7, if it were somehow worth it.

  • Need an expert advice on *X display manager, window manager and composit manager combination

    Hello! I have fought with myself whether or not i should ask this question but I find myself stuck and I need another expert opinion. I can't seem find the right combination of display and window manager (and composit manager). I have tried so many different combinations but most of them don't work for me. I have been working with Linux for a few years now and currently I'm running Gentoo with GDM, Openbox(stand alone, Gnome aware) and xcompmgr. But I have tried Metacity, Awesome and Fluxbox with and without Compiz, but always with GDM. What I want: A lightweight, HIGHLY configurable environment that doesn't rely on mouse-input too much (except for web browsing and image processing). At 95% I work with multiple consoles and desktops on multiple screens. What makes me ask is that most lightweight environments seem somewhat "unfinished" and show unexpected behavior quite often. And of course I want an environment that's not TOO ugly to look at as I use it at an average of 10 hours a day. :) Any thoughts? What do you use in a similar situation? Thanks for any advice!   • Advice needed: ADSL and VPN for a small company

    Hi. I need advice on purchasing an ADSL modem/router for a small company. At the moment, we are using the iBurst Wireless service for internet connectivity. I have the iBurst desktop modem, which connects to my Netgear WNR2000 router via ethernet. I am using the Netgear WNR2000 to deploy a wireless network as well. I have also set up a VPN using Windows Server 2003, and enabled the VPN Passthrough settings on the Netgear router. I am able to connect to the office network remotely without difficulty. However the problem that I've read is that the Netgear WNR2000 only supports VPN passthrough for a single session. This is simply not good enough. I need to be able to support at least 3 concurrent VPN connections immediately, and up to 5 in the near future. Now I am cancelling my iBurst Wireless service and have just got my ADSL line installed. I have to purchase an ADSL modem, and now is a good time to think of future proofing my investment. I need a good ADSL modem, that will allow me to support at least 5 concurrent VPN connections, or more, without breaking the bank. My budget is about 150-200 USD. I believe that my current Netgear WNR2000 router will be useless, except maybe to extend my wireless network in the future by a bit. Is there a solution where I can still use my Netgear WNR2000 for WiFi, for e.g., by connecting a cheaper non-WiFi ADSL modem to the Netgear router? If not, then which WiFi-enabled ADSL modem/router that supports at least 5 VPN passthroughs can you recommend? To sum it up, I need an ADSL modem/router that is: ADSL & ADSL2+ compatible has built-in 802.11n 270/300mbps WiFi (if having this feature doesn't push the price up too much) supports at least 5 VPN connections using VPN passthrough EDIT: Answer 2.10 in the following FAQ has me a bit worried - What is VPN/multiple VPN Pass-through?

  • Malicious content on server - next steps advice [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: My server's been hacked EMERGENCY I just got an e-mail from my hosting company that they got a report of malicious content being hosted on my vps. I was unaware of this and started looking into it. I discovered a file called /var/www/mysite.com/osc.htm. Soon after I discovered some weird php files wp-includes.php and ndlist.php both recognized as being PHP/WebShell.A.1 virus. I removed all these files but I'm unsure of what to do next.   • Advice: USB Monitoring Programming

    I need an advice about USB programming in linux. i have to design a USB monitoring program that 'll keep checking usb ports of a linux cent os. as soon as a usb or external hard disk is connected, this program will shoot an email to some specific person about detail of usb (as size, mount on, time). when usb is disconnected, it will again shoot an email to some person with same kind of information. mean while this program will also write logs in syslog/messages with name of programing for easy tracking. Now I want ask that what is best way to develop this program. as I'm new to this field so i know nothing about it? either i should use perl, bash scripting or some other language? I have no idea what is right way to adopt coz this program will keep running all the time to keep a check on usb ports. I know few commands in like lsusb, fdisk (to check attached usb) and df -h (to get detail of usb) but dont know how i can achieve using these commands that i am thinking. also one more thing that in future i also need to modify this program for ubuntu and Citrix XenServer and it should be same everywhere.

  • Advice on resizing 1280*720 for web audiences.

    Forgive my spelling, I'm posting this from my mobile. I've recently decided to record videos to help teach a visual language. My camera likes to boast it can record in 1280; its a cheap camera about £75 so the quality isn't amazing. But its okay. Anyways, it has some other settings for lower res, but I figure might as well record in a larger size in case the need arises for a bigger source file in the future. I've been looking at jw player to play the converted files (mp4 to flv I think). What do you think a good size would be to convert to? I want to to look nice and clear remembering it is a visual language so lip patterns, facial expressions, body movement, fingers etc are all important, sound is not that important but I would like to have a choice to toggle captions.   • LFD always stops working after ~30 days, until I give /etc/csf/csf.pl -r

I don't know much about CSF/LFD, but I would have imagined that this would work in a FIFO manner, so it should be able to run indefinitely within finite space.     I have the USB modem internet connection. I am using ICS sharing in XP to share my internet connection. ON window XP LAN i have set up the LAN IP as 192.168.137.1 255.255.255.0 Now i have joined the cable from that XP LAN to another LAPTOP running vista Now if set the LAN on VISTA to get ip automatically them internet don't work but if manually set the ip to 192.168.137.3 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.137.1 Then my internet works But i want to join that LAN cable from XP to rouer so that i can use router to divide internet. But i don't know how i can give static ipto router because i think somehow that LAN on XP is not giving the IP address
