  • Windows Explorer not displaying drives (Windows 7)

    A very strange issue - Windows Explorer doesn't display the drives connected to my machine. I did make some changes to my setup a while back with the Local Group Policy Editor to disable the "Aero Shake" behavior, so I may have inadvertently enabled or disabled something related to this, but to be honest, I don't remember when the behavior actually started. Any ideas? This is a Windows 7 machine.

  • Avoid Windows Explorer to load complete executable file

    On Windows Vista, when browsing to a network folder containing executables, Windows Explorer seems to load all the files completely just to be able to show the executable icon (the resource monitor indicates loads of traffic during the loading of the directory) On XP only a part of the file is loaded. Is there a way to avoid the complete loading of these files? Note that disabling my anti virus does not help.

  • I lost the menu inside of Explorer (file browser) under Windows XP

    The question says it all. Inside of the file explorer under Windows XP, I lost all menu items from the top, as well as the toolbars. And right-clicking only gives me the file/directory context menu, nothing to restore the toolbar or the menu. Help. I don't use Windows so much (I much prefer linux), so I don't know all the latest tricks and hacks. Merci :-)

  • Open dialog box won't show files in libraries, but explorer will

    I have the weirdest problem when trying to open or save files. When I try to get to "My Documents" through the "Libraries" side link it won't show any of my files. It will show them if I go around from the C:// drive into the user files though. I thought it was because I didn't have the right location defined for the "Libraries" shortcut, but when I use "Explorer" to open my "Libraries" it shows all the files. Any ideas?

  • How to remove folder from Explorer's jump list

    I'm using Windows 7 and Windows Explorer some folders were added to the taskbar jump list (under the Frequent section) that no longer exist. When I try to remove those folders from the jump list (using context menu's "Remove from this list" option) nothing happens and the folders are still shown. When I try to access those non-existing folders windows prompts that selected item is not available and asks whether I want to remove it from the list. Regardless if I select "Yes" or "No" the folder still remains in the list.

  • IE9 RC fixed the “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage” error when running an ASP.NET application in Visual Studio

    One of the obstacles ASP.NET developers faced in using the Internet Explorer 9 Beta was the dreaded “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage” error when running an ASP.NET application in Visual Studio. In the bug information on Connect (issue 601047), Eric Lawrence said that the problem was due to “caused by failure to failover from IPv6 to IPv4 when the connection is local.” Robert MacLean gives some more information as what was going wrong: “The problem is Windows, especially since it assumes IPv6 is better than IPv4. Note […] that when you ping localhost you get an IPv6 address. So what appears to be happening is when IE9 tries to go to localhost it uses IPv6, and the ASP.NET Development Server is IPv4 only and so nothing loads and we get the error.” The Simple Fix - Install IE 9 RC Internet Explorer 9 RC fixes this bug, so if you had tried IE 9 Beta and stopped using it due to problems with ASP.NET development, install the RC. The Workaround in IE 9 Beta If you're stuck on IE 9 Beta for some reason, you can follow Robert's workaround, which involves a one character edit to your hosts file. I've been using it for months, and it works great. Open notepad (running as administrator) and edit the hosts file (found in %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc) Remove the # comment character before the line starting with 127.0.0.1 Save the file - if you have problems saving, it's probably because you weren't running as administrator When you're done, your hosts file will end with the following lines (assuming you were using a default hosts file setup beforehand): # localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.     127.0.0.1       localhost #    ::1             localhost Note: more information on editing your hosts file here. This causes Windows to default to IPv4 when resolving localhost, which will point to 127.0.0.1, which is right where Cassini - I mean the ASP.NET Web Development Server - is waiting for it.

  • Run Explorer in SYSTEM account on Windows Vista or 7 using Sysinternal’s psexec tool?

    Has anyone been successful at launching an instance of Windows Explorer in the SYSTEM account on Windows Vista or 7? It is possible to do this on XP, but I haven't been able to get it to completely work in Vista or 7. Trying to launch Explorer as SYSTEM into session 1 (my user session) results in Explorer exiting immediately and returning an error code of 1. I can launch Explorer as SYSTEM into session 0 with the following command: psexec -i 0 -s explorer That will create an instance of explorer running as SYSTEM with a taskbar and start menu on the hidden session 0 desktop, but won't let you open a file browser window. If you switch to the hidden session 0 desktop and try to open an Explorer window from there to browse files, the following error message appears: "The server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect. Check the username and password." I have set the following registry key to 1 for my user account and the SYSTEM account: \Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\SeparateProcess There has got to be a way to make this work? If it is not possible, can anyone explain why? -Rob

  • Why does my laptop resume immediately after suspend?

    I seem to be having some problem with suspend mode. Every time I try to suspend my laptop, it just locks the screen. Or maybe it successfully suspends just to resume only an instant after.     Hi, I have created a window service and set some dependencies like on MSMQ, MSSQLSERVER and so. Everything is working nice. but i need to send another dependency for my service. That is on internet connection. My service is responsible for sending emails. As soon my server starts, my service starts too and it finds if there is anything to send, if there is, it starts to send email, if during sending it is not able to connect to the internet it cannot send email. so i guess i should set my service dependency on internet connection too. I already set my window service dependency to MicrosoftSQL Server and Microsoft Message Queuing by editing the registry value. by adding new multi string value named "DependOnService", Type "REG_MULTI_SZ" and space separated names of the services that my service depends upon for the Data. For Microsoft SQL Server i set the value to "MSSQLSERVER" but i don't know the name of the internet service that i need to set dependency upon. how can i do this, any help please Thanks

    I'm currently having a Problem with my msi GT70 laptop. my laptop is running windows 8 and yesterday it requested a Restart to Update. after the Restart and the update I tried to surf the net through google chrome, the WiFi connection is perfect but the page I tried to access is not loading at all, after a while it shows failure to load page. I disabled and reenabled the WiFi chip through the device manager but still no internet connection. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, still no internet. I updated the Driver of the wifi, still no internet, I even went to Wifi configuration and tried to change the DNS and reset it back to automatically, still no Luck.. I'm really lost I don't know what to do, I don't want to go deep and play with Laptop DNA "aka: registry file" and screw things up. I really appreciate any help in this matter. thanks in advance. Note: I tried to access many pages but no luck. I even tried Firefox, Opera, even ie still no luck. The internet is working fine on my tablet and cellphone, except for the Laptop.

  • Internet Sharing on Lion breaks my routing table

    When in the office, I'm connected to a 192.168.1.0/24 network. When Internet Sharing is off, when I run netstat -nr the first entry shows default 192.168.1.254 UGSc 10 62 en0 If I turn Internet sharing on, it shows default link#5 UCS 2 0 en1 This is obviously incorrect and breaks all connectivity of my machine. en1 is my wireless, whereas en0 is my ethernet. If I then disable Internet Sharing, it even deletes that incorrect route, so I'm left with no default route at all. Currently I have one script that I run when I share, or after, when I disable that does route delete default route add default 192.168.1.254 That fixes everything, but I'd love to know what's actually making this happen and how to properly fix it. And just to say that at some point a few months ago, this was working absolutely perfectly, with no hitches, then one day when I brought the laptop home, I couldn't disable the internet sharing, so I couldn't connect to my home wifi. I eventually had to restart the machine and since then this problem has been happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

    Hi All, I am running into a problem which is quite a bit surprising.I have an GWT application,which i can run perfectly fine on Firefox,but the same GWT application does not open up in Internet Explorer. When using Firefox i use <set-property name="user.agent" value="gecko1_8"/> and when i want to run in Internet Explorer i change it to <set-property name="user.agent" value="ie8"/> and debug.This way i am sure that the problem i am having is not related to deferred binding. When using the Internet Explorer (IE 8) i cannot even get into the onModuleLoad() part of my application.It looks as if Internet Explorer has downloaded all its stuff ,but has nothing to display.     First off let me say that I'm not a network admin or server guy, I know very little about that stuff. What I'm trying to do is setup a virtualized domain using hyper-V. Here is the configuration: Physical Server: 4Mb RAM Windows Server 2008 R2 running Hyper-V Virtual Environment: One Domain Controller running Windows Server 2008 R2 One Client running Windows Server 2008 R2 I have been successful in setting up a virtual domain controller and adding a virtual client to that domain controller but I'm stuck at trying to give the virtual Environment Internet access. I can give the client VM Internet access if I remove them from the virtual domain but once I add them back to the virtual domain, Internet access is gone. I've read articles describing many different ways this can be done (using RRAS with NAT, using a wireless connection, etc...) but all of those articles only cover a small piece of the setup and also seem to be geared towards people who know there way around networking and servers which I don't. I'd like to know more but my thing is software development and I have my hands full trying to keep up with everything in that realm. I simply want to setup a virtual domain with Internet access for testing. Can anyone point me to any "for Dummy's" type information on how to setup this type of environment or can anyone provide this kind of step-by-step help. Any help would be very much appreciated.
