  • Ubuntu 14.04 get Windows 8 to show up

    http://paste.ubuntu.com/7271888/ So I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on what used to be Ubuntu 12.04. I am dual booting with Windows 8.1. I haven't been able to access Ubuntu 12.04 since Windows 8.1 did some updates a few weeks back. Grub shows up and I can't see windows 8.1. How can I add Windows 8 using Boot Repair? I figured out how to install boot-repair in Ubuntu 14.04 by doing this workaround: https://bugs.launchpad.net/boot-repair/+bug/1267702 Most important thing: How can I add Windows 8.1 to the Grub menu using Boot Repair?   • Why Does Unity lag Often That I have To Manually Shutdown/Restart my Core i3 Laptop?

    I did a fresh install of Ubuntu then do did some upgrades. After my next restart when I try to open Ubuntu Software Center it took about 20 seconds for the window to load then 10 more seconds before it became click able. While doing some installation of software, Unity lags like hell that every time I click any application it takes a few seconds before I can see it. Even GEdit take a lot of time to load. The worst part was when I was doing nothing to my computer. Even on that part, my computer lags. My Laptop is a Brand New Core i3 with 2GB of RAM. Unity should run perfectly on that kind of machine right? BTW: I reinstalled Ubuntu 11.04 for about 5 times now and still nothing changed.

  • Given a used laptop with Ubuntu installed, how do I get past the password demands?

    Recently given a laptop with Ubuntu 12.1 installed alongside Windows 7. Can only access Ubuntu, which is fine for everyday use (LibreOffice, Firefox, etc.) but there's an authentication password required to install the 500+ updates, and when trying to run anything in terminal, it asks for "quiz's" password. It won't allow me to go into root mode to bypass the password (if that's even a real thing?). I'm completely new to Linux, but am fascinated at the capabilities and would like to mess around some more, but keep getting stopped by these passwords. What do I have to do? Uninstall and re-install? How does one do that if I don't even have access to the Windows 7 OS because it is password protected as well? Thanks in advance for any information and help.

I do not have a monitor screen. Can I use laptop screen to display dell server and set it up? I mean to say is, if I can display dell server on laptop screen, it would be great.     I'm thinking of retiring my 3 year old HP laptop I want to know which manufacturor makes laptops with the best Keyboards? I loved my Full width keyboard, with numberic pad on my HP, I've tried a a few laptop keyboards in shops and have found none of them satisfying to type with. What I want is something that will maximise my typing comfort. All the ones I see in shops seem to be designed to look good but feel horible. The keys are either too shiny, too small, or don't press down enough. All I want it a keyboard thats comfortable, I've been given a Lenovo laptop by my work and I've had to resort to pluging in a USB keyboard while I work, which is less than ideal.

    I have a Dell Precision M4300 with a Dell Dock PRO1X running Ubuntu Natty. When I have the laptop docked the lcd display is off and I use two external monitors however when I undock the laptop it does not switch to the laptop screen. The same happens when I dock the laptop, it does not switch to the external monitors. If I reboot the laptop it will choose the correct setup but it will not automatically change monitors with Ubuntu running. My Xorg.conf

I need to replace my current, broken, laptop and I thought this would be a good opportunity to get to play some of these games. My current laptop is really only lacking in its graphics card. The laptop has an E-Sata port, and I was wondering if I could set it up and plug in a few hard drives permanently (meaning I won't be unplugging it) to the eSata port and use the laptop as a wireless NAS to seamlessly and wirelessly store and access my files.     Question: Is there a general method, which would let me determine if a laptop can support 2x external monitors? Context: I’m shopping for a laptop, which would support my 2 main modes of operation. In CAD mode, I sit at my desk and do many hours of work with OrCAD, Altium, SoligWorks. I’d like to have 2x external monitors. (If needed, monitors can be connected through dock station.) In field mode, I still need to run CAD packages, but only to look-up and tweak things occasionally. Field mode happens in vanilla indoor environments, so ruggedness and ingress protection are not needed. It would be nice if the laptop had a small footprint, like a 13” laptop perhaps. At the same time, weight and thickness of the laptop are not a problem for me. Of course, I also wonder if this is realistic at all. Any suggestion, insight or reference is really appreciated!

  • HP Pavillion dv6 laptop - 15 beeps on startup and a black screen?

    Usual story - girlfriend's step-brother's laptop is broken. I don't know a huge amount about what occurred before it broke, but I do know the following: When you try to turn the laptop on, it beeps 15 times exactly. The screen remains black. The LED on the Caps Lock key flashes continuously. If left on, the laptop never boots - as far as I can see. If left on, on a stable surface with decent ventilation for a relatively short period of time, the laptop (below keyboard, but not where the RAM/HDD are) gets very hot. I've tried doing what most websites appear to recommend for similar problems, which is to disconnect AC and battery then hold the power button down for a minute before reconnecting the AC and trying to turn the laptop on - no difference. EDIT I've also tried re-seating the RAM, to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks in advance,

    All the laptop chargers I had until now sparked whever I plugged them in. This is true for my old charger (the bulkier / rounder Dell model) and the new charger (the flat Dell model) with two different Dell laptops, however until recently I didn't give it much thought. Then, in the last couple of months: I shorted out a conference room and melted the floor a little (the wire caught fire) The second charger (also a Dell original) died, taking the power strip with it I'm wondering: Is it normal for laptop chargers to spark when plugged in? Specifically new, original Dell chargers Is there a "correct" way to plug / unplug chargers? Do I need to first unplug it from the wall and then from the laptop / do I need to first plug it into the wall and then into the laptop? May the problem be caused by the fact that I leave sometimes the charger plugged into the wall without connecting the laptop for longer periods of time (up to a day)? PS. I'm talking about Europe, so 220V and this happens in many places (at home, at my parents, at work, in hotels I trave to, etc)

    I recently had problems with my ubuntu partition (after the battery died), I managed to fix them by running ubuntu from usb and run gparted. It worked I can access my files on the partition by running ubuntu from usb. But when I restart the computer, after selecting ubuntu in Grub, I get a black screen with a white underscore. I googled the problem, and tried to solve it by setting nomodeset, but it didn't work. Next I wanted to try to fix Grub using boot-repair, I clicked on 'Recommended repair', it tells me to type the following commands in the terminal: sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda5" apt-get install -fy sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda5" dpkg --configure -a sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda5" apt-get purge -y --force-yes grub-common But when running the second command, I get this error: dpkg: warning: 'sh' not found in PATH or not executable. dpkg: warning: 'rm' not found in PATH or not executable. dpkg: warning: 'tar' not found in PATH or not executable. dpkg: error: 3 expected programs not found in PATH or not executable. Note: root's PATH should usually contain /usr/local/sbin, /usr/sbin and /sbin. I didn't edit /etc/environment (or any other files), this is what it looks like: PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games" RUNNING_UNDER_GDM="yes" I have no idea how to fix this. I'm running dualboot Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7, Windows boots fine.

  • 12.04 grub unable to boot on /sde, upgrade-grub and boot-repair failed, please help

    My problem is I've 4 disks in a raid array listed as sda, sdb... sdd and grub 2 refuses to boot on /sde (the 5th disk, standalone and containing a clean install of 12.04 64 bits). I tried all solutions but all fail. (live CD/USB with grub-setup, also tried repair-grub, and tried also in the "grub rescue" set prefix= etc). I also tried to deactivate the RAID array in the BIOS, but I'd rather not destroy it, and I didn't find a way to make the standalone disk as '/sda1' (this would satisfy grub). In the BIOS, the would-be /sda is the only bootable hard disk; it ends up as /sde and grubs complains. I've made repair-grub issue a pastebin. I always end up in grub-rescue and I'm stuck. I need Ubuntu to boot so that I can add the device array handler for my disks. I can't switch the disks and I can't disconnect the SATA RAID controller. I need: (a) a workaround so that grub starts on /sde; or (b) a way to change the order in which Ubuntu sees the disks, at boot time. I could then provide grub with a /sda1. Thanks a lot. up please thanks a lot it's not the same problem as booting ubuntu from raid. My RAID array serves only of data repository windows had no problem with this configuration

    I have a company issued laptop and docking station as well as two monitors The specifications of the hardware are as follows; Laptop: Latitude E6430 BIOS: A02.00 Processor: i7-3720QM CPU @ 2.60 (8 CPUs) Memory: 4096MB RAM Page file: 1825MB used, 4793MB available DirectX 11 Display Driver/Chip: MVIDIA NVS 5200M DAC: Integrated RAMDAC Aprox Total Memory: 2376 (Above 3 details same for both displays) Current Display Mode (Display 1): 1600x900 Current Display Mode (Display 2): 1440x900 the docking station is a Dell Latitude E6420 Docking Station PR03X Port Replicator and I don't think the monitor model is particularly relevant to resolving this issue but they are both Acer V193Ws The story goes like this; the laptop works fine if I VGA one monitor into the laptop through the vga port on the back of the lefthand side of the laptop I can achieve dual monitor display fine (laptop screen + monitor) if I plug the laptop into the docking station and use the vga port in the back of the docking station I can dual monitor fine (laptop screen + monitor) if I plug the laptop into the docking station, the laptop's lefthand side VGA port no longer seems to function at all I've spoken to internal IT about this issue and they're going to get me some kind of VGA splitter or a DVI-VGA adapter to use with the docking station for the second Acer Monitor, but that isn't going to happen for a few days. So I guess what I'm wondering is; is there any way to continue to use the side VGA port on my laptop while using the docking station VGA port? and as a secondary 'followup' pending resolution of the initial issue with getting both monitors up and running (at the moment I have both monitors on my desk but am just using my laptop screen as one of my dual monitor display with one of the monitors [the one connected to dock]), is there any way to CONTINUE to use my laptop monitor to in effect have a triple monitor display (2 monitors + docked laptop)? I am wondering this because internal IT told me that they were aware of some issues with the particular display drivers in my box and triple monitor displays but weren't really going to look TOO much in-depth into that (which is perfectly understandable) since getting the adapter for the dual monitors up and running was the greater priority within their purview. So this is a two parter; Can I dual monitor using two vga cables with 1 docking station vga port and one laptop vga port? is there a setting that can be tweaked somewhere? because plugging the box into the station seems to make the side port stop working and... Is there any reasonably simple and cost-effective work around (e.g. I am find with shelling out maybe a few dollars out of my own pocket for some hardware or software to make my company box tri-display capable) but if this requires some extensive rebuild or new OSs or doing stuff to the BIOS I'd rather have a straight answer about this being untenable as a slight modification to a (once again) company laptop and stop wasting time looking into it Thanks! and please let me know if you guys need any more details (tech specs or something) to answer this question [EDIT] 2/10/2014 Just an update; turned out it really was just a hardware limitation issue. The old laptop just couldn't hack it. Got a new laptop with a better video card and different monitors from my company and am successfully using a triple display currently (2 monitors + laptop screen)

  • Laptop Asus P50IJ with Intel 4500M GMA output going to a Dell 1907FP external monitor will not allow

    Hello - I just purchased an Asus P50IJ-X2 laptop which has a Intel GMA 4500M video card running Windows7. At work I output this laptop to a Dell 1907FP LCD which has a maximum resolution of 1280x1024. Not matter what I do the Windows will not allow the laptop to set a resolution higher than 1024x768 to this LCD monitor. Ive even gone to the extent of downloading PowerStrip (I'd post a link but Im new and can only enter 1 url, if you google for powerstrip its the first option) to create a custom driver for my monitor thinking Windows was having a hard time seeing the available resolutions it would accept. However, powerstrip read the registery and properly sees the monitor and what its capable of so Im now at a complete loss as to why Windows7 will not allow me to set/use a 1280x1024 resolution for this external monitor (as my last laptop did running Vista). The Intel documentation (http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/quick-reference-guide-to-intel-integrated-graphics/) indicates that the GMA 4500M should be able to run up to a 2560x1600 max res. The Dell 1907FP specification states it can run up to a 1280x1024 res. But no matter what the computer will not allow me to set higher than a 1024x768. I'm completely baffled but I would really like to be able to output this laptop to a reasonable resolution, 1024x768 makes me feel like I'm using my mom's computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!   • Supplementary Developer Laptop

    I'm looking to buy a laptop with the following specs for a developer. The goal will be to have a development machine supplementing the devs desktop. During work hours the dev will be on a beefy desktop. For working while on the go: trains, client sites, code camps, it would be nice to have a machine which can run Visual Studio 2008 without needing to remote desktop into their primary machine. What do you think is the lowest cost laptop meeting this need? Here are the specs I have in mind: SSD drive 64GB-doesn't need to be huge, most data is stored on servers. Will need to fit Windows 7, IIS, SQL Server, and Visual Studio 2010. RAM-3GB processor =Pentium Core 2 duo Screen size = 14 inches. OS doesn't matter. It will be paved with Windows 7 Ultimate optical drive omitted would be a plus. weight and battery life aren't so important because the machine will be plugged in almost all the time.
