  • Why do my Xcode default font starts to look ugly after some time, until I restart?

    I plugged in an external monitor. All resolutions match perfectly. MacBookPro LCD is closed. After about 10 minutes my fonts in Xcode start to look very bad. Only in Xcode. When I restart the mac and don't use an external monitor, fonts look all right again. When I attach the monitor again, fonts look nice. Then I close XCode and reopen it: Fonts suck. All other fonts look great. It seems like Xcode isn't antialiasing them properly after something happens. For my observation it happens when I quit and reopen Xcode while an external monitor is in use. Only way to fix it then is to completely reboot. Is there a fix for this problem?

  • Windows, why 8 GB of RAM feel like a few MB?

    I'm on Windows 7 x64 with 4-core Intel i7 and 8 GB of RAM, but lately it feels like my computer's "RAM" is located solely on the hard drive. Here is what the task manager shows: The total amount of memory used by the processes in the list is just about 1 GB. And what is happening on my computer for a few days now is that one program (Cataloger.exe) is continually processing large quantities of (rather big) files, repeatedly opening and reading them for the purposes of cataloging. But it doesn't grow too much in memory and stays about that size, about 90 MB. However, the amount of data it processes in, say, 30 minutes can be measured in gigabytes. So my guess was that Windows file caching has something to do with it. And after some research on the topic, I came across this program, called RamMap, that displays detailed info on a computer's RAM. Here is the screenshot: So to me it looks like Windows keeps in RAM huge amounts of data that is no longer needed, redirecting any RAM allocation requests to the pagefile on the hard drive. Even when I close Cataloger.exe, the RamMap reports the size of the mapped file as about the same for a long time on. And it's not just this particular program. Earlier I noticed that similar slowdown occurred after some massive file operations with other programs. So it's really not an exception. Whatever it is, it slows down the computer by like 50 times. Opening a new tab in Chrome takes 20-30 seconds, opening a new program can take up to a minute. Due to the slowdown, some programs even crash. So what do you think, is the problem hiding in file caching or somewhere else? How do I solve it?

  • xbox thumbstick used to rotate sprite, basic formula makes it "stick" or feel "sticky" at 90 degree intervals! how do get smooth rotation?

    Context: C#, XNA game I am using a very basic formula to calculate what angle my sprite (spaceship for example) should be facing based on the xbox controller thumbstick ie. you use the thumbstick to rotate the ship! in my main update method: shuttleAngle = (float) Math.Atan2(newGamePadState.ThumbSticks.Right.X, newGamePadState.ThumbSticks.Right.Y); in my main draw method: spriteBatch.Draw(shuttle, shuttleCoords, sourceRectangle, Color.White, shuttleAngle, origin, 1.0f, SpriteEffects.None, 1); as you can see its quite simple, i take the current radians from the thumbstick and store it in a float "shuttleAngle" and then use this as the rotation angle (in radians) arguement for drawing the shuttle. For some reason when i rotate the sprint it feels sticky at 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees angles, it wants to settle at those angles. its not giving me a smooth and natural rotation like i would feel in a game that uses a similar mechanic. PS: my xbox controller is fine!

  • How does a self-taught programmer know when he's ready to look for a job?

    I've been studying computer science on my own for a few years, but I don't personally know anyone who programs. I was wondering how you know when you're ready to start looking for a job? Personally I'm pretty good with Python and Scheme. I know basic data structures and big O. I've written a Scheme interpreter in C and a couple in Scheme and a few other small/medium sized programs. I have a blog, which I'm starting to transfer my knowledge into to be able to "prove" I know how to code. Am I ready to start looking? And on a related note, am I going to be able to get a job with no experience/education?

The rumor has it that 'high-level' developers are never hired through the job-sites. So, (given that you're a good developer) when you what to hold an appealing position in the company that interests you, and invest a lot of time into increasing your online-presence and self-branding blogging, twitting, contributing to opensource, actively participating in community sites (e.g., Stackoverflow), should you send your CVs here and there or just wait for proposals?

  • My first development job working at a company, what things to look out for?

    So I've worked on my own all this time, selling software, creating a few web applications on my own. I had an Arts background I was self taught. It was a bit difficult to find a development position after endless trying, I finally landed a LAMP position. What I realized was it was all confidence issue. Before when I didn't know a few things I panicked but after spending such a long time working on my own projects and solving various problems, I felt confident enough that I could fulfill requirements on my own. I hope this helps other people applying for jobs This is the first time I will be developing with other team members in an office, are there anything I should prepare for my first day at work next week? Any tips and pointers while working as a developer at a company? I'm kinda nervous but excited.

    Hi, I am using SQL server 2008 Standard edition. I am using Policy based management with policies which come with SQL server during installation. I want the policies to only look at events that happened in last 24 hours. For example for "Windows Event Log System Failure Error" policy if system restarted unexpectedly 5 days ago, i don't want to be alerted daily. Is there any way by which I can restrict a policy to look at events which happened in last 24 hours not older? Any help please? Thanks in advance.

  • Can I instruct the browser not to look for a favicon?

    I have a website that doesn't have/need a favicon. Is there a way to instruct the browser not to waste a request looking for /favicon.ico ? I don't mean filtering logs, but something client-side, like this: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="about:blank" /> That appears to work, but I'm not in a position to do comprehensive tests, (and search engines are being unhelpful). Can anyone confirm if this is a valid method, or provide a suitable alternative?

  • The Uganda .NET Usergroup meeting for January 2011 - a look back.

    We had a very interesting meeting on Friday 28th last week. We had 10 attendees and two speakers. The first topic presented was Cloud Computing, presented by Allan Rwakatungu @arwakatungu who works with MTN Uganda. He gave a very brilliant outline of how Cloud computing and service oriented applications had begun changing the platform for operating business and the costs it saves because of scalability and elasticity. He went on to demonstrate the steps you would take if you are beginning a new Windows Azure project. He explained the history and evolution of the Windows Azure, SQL Azure and cloud services offered by Amazon and google.com. The attendees had many questions to ask (obviously), but they were all answered very well. We once again thank Allan, for taking time to prepare the presentation and demonstrating for us. We recorded a video on the entire presentation and after doing some editing we will publish it. One wish which was echoed by most members was that Microsoft should open the cloud services and development for Africa. Microsoft currently does not even have servers here in Africa and so far, that does not put African developers in the same platform as other developers in other continents. Now is the time considering the improvements in network speeds and joining of the Seacom network and broadband.   I presented on Parallelism and Multithreading using .NET 4.0, I also gave some details on the language changes in C# 5.0 and the async keyword and the TaskEx class. I explained the Task, Scheduling of parallel tasks and demonstrated problems that may arise from using parallelism inappropriately. I also demonstrated the performance improvements that may be achieved by taking advantage of multi-core processors. You may download the presentation on Parallelism and Multi-threading from here. The resolution of the meeting was that we should meet more than once a month and begin other activities which should be more fun. e.g. Geek Dinner, Geek Beer or CodeCamp.     The Commandos series of games and its similar western counterpart, Desperados, use a mix of 2D and 3D elements to achieve a very pleasing and immersive atmosphere. Apart from the concept that alone made the series a best-seller, the graphics eye-candy was also a much appreciated asset of that game. I was very curious on what was the technique used to model and adorn the realistic terrains in those titles? Below are some screenshots that could be relevant as a reference for whomever has a candidate answer: The tiny details and patternless distribution of ornamental textures make me think that these terrains were not generated using a standard heightmap-blendmap method.

  • What would the ultimate developer training class look like?

    I think today's typical/traditional 3-5 days developer training classes aren't so great, as you tend to forget half of it shortly after. It's too much one way communication and not enough interaction. Also brain research has shown that this kind of setup is usually not optimal for efficient learning. For clarification, I am referring to professional, commercial, paid classes. However this could also be applied for any kind of studies. How could the ultimate developer training package be setup to really make sure you learn what you are supposed to learn? Would that be more: Multimedia? Exercises? Homeworks? Spread out over time instead of 3-5 compact days? Group projects?

  • How can I make eclipse look like VS.NET 2010?

    I am constantly switching between a project written in C# 4.0 and another one written in Java. I find it very difficult to read the code in Java, and I think it's because of its colors (or lack of them really) Is there any way to mimic the colors that VS.NET 2010 has inside eclipse? (even better would be to replace all its hotkeys for their equivalent in VS.NET, like ctrl+k for ctrl+f3, but I believe it would be utopic)

I'm not interested in documentation, I want to check out the real scripts and the logic in them. How do you recommend I dig into this? Where on the ISO are these parts located? I don't know what the installer for Ubuntu is called, or how it is configured. I am well versed in programming languages and command line GNU/Linux.
