  • How to set the monitor to its native resolution when xrandr approach isn't working?

    I am trying to setup my Samsung syncmaster B2030 monitor in ubuntu 12.04. It's native resolution is 1600x900 which I am not getting in ubuntu and which I am trying to get. I tried using xrandr approach provided in these urls: 1) http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-change-display-resolution-settings-using-xrandr.html 2) How to set the monitor to its native resolution which is not listed in the resolutions list? S1) I used cvt 1600 900 60 to get the modeline. Output was: # 1600x900 59.95 Hz (CVT 1.44M9) hsync: 55.99 kHz; pclk: 118.25 MHz Modeline "1600x900_60.00" 118.25 1600 1696 1856 2112 900 903 908 934 -hsync +vsync S2) I then used xrandr and output was: Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1152 x 864, maximum 8192 x 8192 DVI-I-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) VGA-0 connected 1152x864+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 60.0 + 1360x768 60.0 59.8 1152x864 60.0* 800x600 72.2 60.3 56.2 680x384 119.9 119.6 640x480 59.9 512x384 120.0 400x300 144.4 320x240 120.1 DVI-I-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) which gave me "VGA-0". S3) Then I used xrandr --newmode "1600x900_60.00" 118.25 1600 1696 1856 2112 900 903 908 934 -hsync +vsync But instead of adding the modeline it just threw an error: X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist) Major opcode of failed request: 153 (RANDR) Minor opcode of failed request: 16 (RRCreateMode) Serial number of failed request: 29 Current serial number in output stream: 29 My system details: 1) ubuntu 12.04 LTS 2) Graphic card: GeForce 9400 GT/PCIe/SSE2 (driver is successfully installed. I am checking it in System Settings Details. And it's showing that driver is installed and its "GeForce 9400 GT/PCIe/SSE2") 3) Monitor: Samsung syncmaster B2030 4) Resolutions I am getting: 800x600 1024x768 1152x864 (I am currently using this one) 1360x768 (this one isn't working properly) Does anyone know what I can do? Thanks in advance. UPDATE (1): Today I tried it again. And adding a modeline (using --newmode) worked.     We're running freebsd + jail, and lighttpd + fastcgi + php_cgi. We changed our domain and all of a sudden we are getting SPORADIC connection closes. We recently changed our subdomain from www to shop but really there have been no other major changes. When I modified lighttpd's server.max-read-idle from default 60 to 5 the connection close message comes much more rapidly however it has not corrected the issue.

    This might not have any major impact on the SEO, but basically I have random blog at this URL: http://example.com/blog (not a real URL), that I am removing and replacing with a company blog. I want to use the http://example.com/blog URL address, but I'm not sure how this would effect my SEO since this random blog content that I am removing has the example.com/blog URL prefix. Would I just add a 310 redirect for those old blog articles and leave the basic /blog URL without any redirects?

    When we develop libraries (whether internal or public), it helps to have a rapid ability to make changes and test them in a consuming application. Building Setup the library with automatic versioning and a nuspec Setup library assembly version to auto increment build and revision AssemblyInfo –> [assembly: AssemblyVersion("1.0.*")] This autoincrements build and revision based on time of build Major & Minor Major should be changed when you have breaking changes Minor should be changed once you have a solid new release During development I don’t increment these Create a nuspec, version this with the code nuspec - set version to <version>$version$</version> This uses the assembly’s version, which is auto-incrementing Make changes to code Run automated build (ruby/rake) run “rake nuget” nuget task builds nuget package and copies it to a local nuget feed I use an environment variable to point at this so I can change it on a machine level! The nuget command below assumes a nuspec is checked in called Library.nuspec next to the csproj file $projectSolution = 'src\\Library.sln' $nugetFeedPath = ENV["NuGetDevFeed"] msbuild :build => [:clean] do |msb| msb.properties :configuration => :Release msb.targets :Build msb.solution = $projectSolution end task :nuget => [:build] do sh "nuget pack src\\Library\\Library.csproj /OutputDirectory " + $nugetFeedPath end Setup the local nuget feed as a nuget package source (this is only required once per machine) Go to the consuming project Update the package Update-Package Library or Install-Package TLDR change library code run “rake nuget” run “Update-Package library” in the consuming application build/test! If you manually execute any of this process, especially copying files, you will find it a burden to develop the library and will find yourself dreading it, and even worse, making changes downstream instead of updating the shared library for everyone’s sake. Publishing Once you have a set of changes that you want to release, consider versioning and possibly increment the minor version if needed. Pick the package out of your local feed, and copy it to a public / shared feed! I have a script to do this where I can drop the package on a batch file Replace apikey with your nuget feed's apikey Take out the confirm(s) if you don't want them @ECHO off echo Upload %1? set /P anykey="Hit enter to continue " nuget push %1 apikey set /P anykey="Done " Note: helps to prune all the unnecessary versions during testing from your local feed once you are done and ready to publish TLDR consider version number run command to copy to public feed

  • Which programming language to get into?

    I'm ending my third term in a few weeks so I have some spare time coming up. I'd like to spend it seriously digging into programming. My problem: I'm not sure which language to begin with. Just to be clear, I don't want to start a language-y-compared-to-language-z discussion. There are a some other issues that play a major role. In my 5th term I'm going to be participating in a major practical course which will include either Java or C programming. It will take a lot of time and energy, as I found out while talking to a few students who passed the final exams (only 15% pass on their first try). Which practical course I will take is randomly decided. My skills so far are the absolute basics of Java and C programming. I know the different data types and how to handle them, objects, pointers, thread programming, etc. All of that is on a very low level, though. My question now is, what language should I start seriously practicing? Java: I did my first GUIs with this language. I'm familiar with Eclipse but I need a project to work on (which I don't have) to really keep me pushing. Besides that, I don't think it would help me if I have to do C in a year. C: As with Java, I can't think of a personal project to keep me working and keep me interested in programming. If I get assigned to Java in a year, this wouldn't give me any advantages either, would it? (No objects, etc.) Objective-C: I recently came up with this idea. I have a Mac; I'm not really familiar with Xcode but I have one or two personal projects I'd like to work on. Further, I would be working with objects (as in Java) and C language constructs which would both be great for this practical course in a year. What do you think I should begin with? Should I just stick to Java and hope for the best, force myself through C or start (nearly) completely from the beginning with Objective C? Maybe you folks could give me some good advice that would stop me from switching from one language to the next?
