  • How to email output of scheduled tasks?

    - by Starfish
On Unix systems, the scheduled task service will email any output that a scheduled task produces. If no output is produced, no email is sent. How can I do the same thing on Windows Server 2003 or 2008? Is there a way to call a batch file or executable that will run my task, capture the output, and email it only if there is output? If you propose a PowerShell solution, please note that I only have PowerShell 1.0.

  • Commands in Task-It - Part 1

Download Source Code NOTE: To run the source code provided your will need to update to the RC (release candidate) versions of Silverlight 4 and VisualStudio 2010. In recent blog posts, like my MVVM post, I used Commands to invoke actions, like Saving a record. In this rather simplistic sample I will talk about the basics of Commands, and in my next post will get deeper into it. What is a Command? I remember the first time a UI designer used the word "command" I wasn't really sure what she was referring to. I later realized that it is just a term that is used to represent some UI control that can invoke an action, like a Button, HyperlinkButton, RadMenuItem, RadRadioButton, etc. Why should we use Commands? I'm sure you're familiar with the code behind approach of handling events. For example, if you had a Button and a RadMenuItem that ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • memory and time intensive php task

    - by Goddard
Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything usable. I'm working on a project for a client and currently I have to loop through the users table which is about 3000 records and still growing. I have to do some calculations on a nightly basis which I am going to be using cron/php. The calculations script uses about 3.5mb of memory and takes about 1 second to run. When loading individual users my current php setup handles this fine, but if I try and loop through the user list my php script execution time runs out. I've read after doing some searching that I can make the page reload itself after each user calculation and just keep my previous place in the loop and this sounds like a good idea, but I wanted to hear some opinions from others that have handled similar situations and how you handled these types of tasks. Thanks.

  • Introducing Task-It. A real-world application using RadControls for Silverlight 4

This is the first in a series of blog posts based around an application called Task-It that I have developed in Silverlight 4. Task-It is real-world application designed for people that need a simple way to manage the numerous tasks that we all strive to accomplish on a daily basis. Figure 1: Task-It Tasks page Figure 2: Task-It Dashboard page I have developed this application for several reasons: There are many task management applications out there, and I have used quite a few of them, but I havent found one that really grabbed me. Many of these applications had their strong points, but some were overly complex, some lacked key features, some cost too much money, and so forth. I thought it would be nice to identify the best parts of each, and take my stab at building my own. During my evaluation of task management applications, I have not yet ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Let task explorer always run with realtime priority

    - by Simon Verbeke
I have replaced task manager by process explorer from sysinternals. I would like this to always run at realtime, so that I can easily get it open when my system is really slow. I have noticed that it can take a while to start this program at those moments. I have gone over the different options mentioned on SU. I can't change the shortcut, it immediately opens the .exe. I also can't use the task manager plugins/extensions, as I'm not using task manager. Any idea what I could do? Preferably without installing any other software. That is, if the priority would have any effect on starting the program.

  • What is an effective way to organize tasks for a new project?

    - by Dulan
Is there a practical solution to organizing the initial tasks for a new project? To elaborate, imagine the features/stories/goals are laid out for a project. How might one go about organizing those into sane tasks for the first few versions? The scenario I typically have in mind has the features listed as a high-level reference for what the end user-experience should involve. The tasks for constructing such features are then broken down into chunks (such as "create interface for X component"). Such a task is not necessarily "tied" to only that feature and may be useful when building subsequent features. Is breaking features down into small, code-able solutions valid? Or should they be slightly removed from any specific implementation? I do not expect that there is one "right" answer to this question, but I am looking for a fairly pragmatic and unobtrusive approach. As a note, I'm looking for solutions that are independent of any tools or "systems" used for managing the tasks themselves.

  • MSDeploy, MSBuild and Continuous Integration

    - by stacker
What steps need to be taken to deploy a website using Continuous Integration and NAnt. If I understand it correctly, this is the basic steps: Build the solution (.sln) with MSBuild. (I don't sure if this steps is required, I think that MSdeploy can build the project itself, but it's good step to be sure that the project is compile). Deploy the website. First we need to create the "build deployment package" files. Then we can deploy them. The question is how to get step #2 done.

  • How does Task Parallel Library scale on a terminal server or in a web application?

    - by Lasse V. Karlsen
I understand that the TPL uses work-stealing queues for its tasks when I execute things like Parallel. For and similar constructs. If I understand this correctly, the construct will spin up a number of tasks, where each will start processing items. If one of the tasks complete their allotted items, it will start stealing items from the other tasks which hasn't yet completed theirs. This solves the problem where items 1-100 are cheap to process and items 101-200 are costly, and one of the two tasks would just sit idle until the other completed. (I know this is a simplified exaplanation.) However, how will this scale on a terminal server or in a web application (assuming we use TPL in code that would run in the web app)? Can we risk saturating the CPUs with tasks just because there are N instances of our application running side by side? Is there any information on this topic that I should read? I've yet to find anything in particular, but that doesn't mean there is none.

  • How to update assmebly version info with new build and revision during build?

    - by hrushikesh
I have to update the build number in assembly version of assemblyinfo.cs file. I have written a custom tasks which updates all the assmeblyinfo.cs under a solution before starting build. But when i change this file and try to build then some of my dlls which has reference of other dlls not able to compile as they dont find the specific version assembly. I have some files which uses strong name assembly also. Not sure how to update their version. I have tried setting specific version to false, but still same error is coming. Can you anybody tell me the good way to update the assemblyinfo.cs with incremental build number? P.S. i am using NANT tasks for automating by builds.

  • VS.NET solution built differently on build server

    - by slolife
I have a VS.NET solution with two Projects, ProjectWeb and ProjectLibrary. PW depends on PL, so I have a VS.NET project reference to PL in PW. That works all well and good on my dev box, but when it all gets to the build server, I have two different build projects, one for PL and one for PW. I'd like to build PL and copy the binaries somewhere. Then, I'd like to build PW and it only, using the binaries from the previous PL build. But will that work since the PW VS.NET project is referencing a project that doesn't exist when I build PW only on the build server? How can I set this up For specifics, I am using CC.NET and NAnt, but I have other projects that use Hudson and straight MS build

  • Project. Properties.Settings versus plain old appSettings?

    - by BryanG
I have an assembly built that uses appSettings in the app.config...pretty straight forward. however, I'm referencing this assembly in a web service, and that web service contains the nAnt build file for this service plus being the entry point for everything. Ideally I'd like to be able to set the assembly's appConfig values from the build file, but is this possible? Or do I have to switch to using the Settings values of the assembly and do something like this in the build: <xmlpoke file="${PublishLocation}\web.config" xpath="//applicationSettings/Namespace.AssemblyClass.Properties.Settings/setting[@name='ExchangeServer']/value" value="${ServerName}" /> You get the idea. Is this possible with just a config? My ideal situation would be to keep the settings more flexible in the appConfig so that when everything is on the server, if frogs rain down, I can update the assembly's config values without rebuilding the solution. Is this even possible (the xpath is wrong, it's just an example of what I'd like to do): <xmlpoke file="${PublishLocation}\web.config" xpath="//appSettings/Namespace/AssemblyClass/add[@key = 'ExchangeServer']/@value" value="${a}" />

  • rails rollback updates when task fails

    - by ash34
Hi, I have the following "generate_report" method being called from a rake task, which gets a hash as an input, that contains the reported hours spent by each user on a task and outputs the data as a .csv report. desc "Task reporting" task :report, [:inp_dt] => [:environment] do |t, args| h = select_data(args.inp_dt) /* not shown here */ generate_report(h) end def generate_report(h) out_dir = File.dirname(__FILE__) + '/../../output' myfile = "#{out_dir}" + "/monthly_#{Date.today.strftime("%m%d%Y")}.csv" writer = CSV.open(myfile, 'w') h.each do |h,v| v.each do |key, val| writer << val end end writer.close end where h = {:BILL=>{:PROJA=>["CYR", "00876", "2", 24], :PROJB=>["EPR", "00876", "2", 16]}, :JANE=>{:PROJA=>["TRB", "049576", "2", 16]}} I would like to set/update a 'processed' flag for each reported transaction and only commit the update when the file is written correctly or rollback the updates when the task fails. How can I accomplish this. thanks, ash

  • Can I prevent a user from using windows task manager to end a process?

    - by Russ
I have a c# 4.0 application that I hear grumblings and rumors about problems with. Now, this application has a global unhandled exception handler that reports back to me with errors. I also know that it works because SOME people fill it in, and submit it. It seems though; that a large number of people do NOT fill it in, but instead, use the Windows Taskmanager to end the process. Is it possible to prevent a user from using the Windows Taskmanager to end a specific process? My goal would be that if the application crashes, the form that the user is presented with prevents the process from being ended. I'll also accept steps that would prevent the Windows Taskmanager from being launched. I know I have seen some processes come up with an "Access Denied" prompt when I try to kill it in TaskManager, however I suspect that the windows team has made this very difficult, if not impossible to achieve.

  • Serialized task distribution: use thread or epoll?

    - by hpsmouse
Now I'm in such a situation that there is a group of predefined tasks for multiple clients to do(any client can take any task). When a client connects to the server, server choose a task from the uncompleted tasks and send it to the client. It takes a while for the client to finish the task and send the result back to the server. Since a task should be sent to only one client, server should process requests in a serialized way. Now I have two plans to do it: create a thread for each client connection and all the threads take turns accessing the task pool, or use epoll listening on all the connection and process for each event of clients. Which one is better for the job? Or is there any other ideas? The server will be run on a multi-core machine.
