How to Plug a Small Hole in NetBeans JSF (Join Table) Code Generation

I was asked recently to provide an assist with designing and building a small-but-vital application that had at its heart some basic CRUD (Create, Read, Update, & Delete) functionality, built upon an Oracle database, to be accessible from various locations. Working from the stated requirements, I fleshed out the basic application and database designs and, once validated, set out to complete the first iteration for review. Using SQL Developer, I created the requisite tables, indices, and sequences for our first run. One of the tables was a many-to-many join table with three fields: one a primary key for that table, the other two being primary keys for the other tables, represented as foreign keys in the join table. Here is a simplified example of the trio of tables: Once the database was in decent shape, I fired up NetBeans to let it have first shot at the code. NetBeans does a great job of generating a mountain of essential code, saving developers what must be millions of hours of effort each year by building a basic foundation with a few clicks and keystrokes. Lest you think it (or any tool) can do everything for you, however, occasionally something tosses a paper clip into the delicate machinery and makes you open things up to fix them. Join tables apparently qualify. :-) In the case above, the entity class generated for the join table (New Entity Classes from Database) included an embedded object consisting solely of the two foreign key fields as attributes, in addition to an object referencing each one of the "component" tables. The Create page generated (New JSF Pages from Entity Classes) worked well to a point, but when trying to save, we were greeted with an error: Transaction aborted. Hmm. A quick debugger session later and I'd identified the issue: when trying to persist the new join-table object, the embedded "foreign-keys-only" object still had null values for its two (required value) attributes...even though the embedded table objects had populated key attributes. Here's the simple fix: In the join-table controller class, find the public String create() method. Automatic Maintenance Jobs in every PDB? New SPM Evolve Advisor Task in Oracle 12.1.0.2

A customer checking out our slides from the OTN Tour in August 2014 asked me a finicky question the other day: "According to the documentation the Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor maintenance task gets executed only within the CDB$ROOT, but not within each PDB - but the slides are not clear here. So what is the truth?" Ok, that's good question. In my understanding all tasks will get executed within each PDB - that's why we recommend (based on experience) to break up the default maintenance windows when using Oracle Multitenant. Otherwise all PDBs will have the same maintenance windows, and guess what will happen when 25 PDBs start gathering object statistics at the same time ... The documentation indeed says: Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor data is stored in the root. It might have results about SQL statements executed in a PDB that were analyzed by the advisor, but these results are not included if the PDB is unplugged. A common user whose current container is the root can run SQL Tuning Advisor manually for SQL statements from any PDB. When a statement is tuned, it is tuned in any container that runs the statement. This sounds reasonable. But when we have a look into our PDBs or into the CDB_AUTOTASK_CLIENT view the result is different from what the doc says. I haven't verified the reason why this is different from the docs but it may have been related to one change in Oracle Database 12.1.0.2: The new SPM Evolve Advisor Task ( SYS_AUTO_SPM_EVOLVE_TASK) for automatic plan evolution for SQL Plan Management. This new task doesn't appear as a stand-alone job (client) in the maintenance window but runs as a sub-entity of the Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor task. Google and Bing Map APIs Compared

At one of the local golf courses I frequent, there is an open grass field next to the course. It is about eight acres in size and mowed regularly. It is permissible to hit golf balls there—you bring and shag our own balls. My golf colleagues and I spend hours there practicing, chatting and in general just wasting time. One of the guys brings Ginger, the amazing, incredible, wonder dog. Ginger is a Portuguese Pointer. She chases squirrels, begs for snacks and supervises us closely to make sure we don't misbehave. Anyway, I decided to make a dedicated web page to measure distances on the field in yards using online mapping services. I started with Google maps and then did the same application with Bing maps. It is a good way to become familiar with the APIs. Here are images of the final two maps: Google: Bing: To start with online mapping services, you need to visit the respective websites and get a developers key. I pared the code down to the minimum to make it easier to compare the APIs. Google maps required this CSS (or it wouldn't work): <style type="text/css"> html { height: 100%; } body { height: 100%; margin: 0; padding: 0; } Here is how the map scripts are included. Plus, I really like jQuery. Note: When creating the Bing map, use the developer Key for the credentials property. I immediately place two markers/pins on the map which is simpler that creating them on the fly with mouse clicks (as I first tried). The markers/pins are draggable and I capture the DragEnd event to calculate and display the distance in yards and draw a line when the user finishes dragging. If you want to see the source for it, you can pick it off the web page. Note: I was able to verify the accuracy of the measurements by using the golf hole next to the field. I put a pin/marker on the center of the green, and then by zooming in, I was able to see the 150 markers on the fairway and put the other pin/marker on one of them. Final Notes: All in all, the APIs are very similar. Both made it easy to accomplish a lot with a minimum amount of code. Navigate Quickly with JustCode and Ctrl+Click

Ctrl + Click is a widely used shortcut for Go To Definition in many development environments but not in Visual Studio. We, the JustCode team, find it really useful so we added it to Visual Studio. But we didn't stop there - we improved it even further. Read on to find the details. With JustCode you get an enhanced Go To Definition. By default you can execute it in the Visual Studio editor using one of the following shortcuts: Middle Click, Ctrl+Left Click, F12, Ctrl+Enter, Ctrl+B. The first usage of this feature is not much different from the default Visual Studio Go To Definition command use it where a member, type, method, property, etc is used to navigate to the definition of that item. For example, if you have this method: public void Start() { lion = new Lion(); lion.Roar(); } If you hold Ctrl and click on the usage of the lion you will go to the lion member definition. If you hold Ctrl and click on the Lion you will go to the Lion class definition. What we added is the ability to easily find all the usages of the item you just navigated to. For example: public class Lion { public void Roar() { Console.WriteLine("Rhaaaar"); } } If you hold Ctrl and click on the Lion definition you will see all the usages of the Lion type; if you click on the Roar method definition you will see all the usages of the Roar method: And if there is only one usage you will get automatically to that usage. In the examples I use C#, but it works also in VB.NET, JavaScript, ASP.NET and XAML. Why we like this feature? Let me first start with how the Ctrl+Click (or Go To Definition command) is used. We noticed that developers use it especially in what we call "code browsing sessions". In simple words this is when you browse around the code looking for a bug, just reading the code or searching for something. Sounds familiar? In our experience when you go to the definition of some item you often want to know more about it and the first thing you need is to find its usages. With JustCode this is just one click away. Why Ctrl+Click/Middle Click over F12/Ctrl+Enter/Ctrl+B? Actually you can use all of them. But during these "code browsing sessions" we noticed that most developers use the mouse. So the mouse is already in use and pressing Ctrl+Click (or the Middle Click) is so natural. During heavy coding sessions or if you are a keyboard type developer F12 (or any of the other keyboard shortcuts) is the key. We really use heavily this feature not only in our team but in the whole company. It saves us a bit of time many times a day. And it adds up. We hope you will like it too. Remember when 11g first came out and we had "invisible indexes"? It seemed like a confusing feature - indexes that would be maintained by modifications (hence slowing them down), but would not be used by queries (hence never speeding them up). But - after you looked at them a while, you could see how they can be useful. For example - to add an index in a running production system, an index used by the next version of the code to be introduced later that week - but not tested against the queries in version one of the application in place now. We all know that when you add an index - one of three things can happen - a given query will go much faster, it won't affect a given query at all, or... It will make some untested query go much much slower than it used to. So - invisible indexes allowed us to modify the schema in a 'safe' manner - hiding the change until we were ready for it.Invisible columns accomplish the same thing - the ability to introduce a change while minimizing any negative side effects of that change. Normally when you add a column to a table - any program with a SELECT * would start seeing that column, and programs with an INSERT INTO T VALUES (...) would pretty much immediately break (an INSERT without a list of columns in it). Now we can add a column to a table in an invisible fashion, the column will not show up in a DESCRIBE command in SQL*Plus, it will not be returned with a SELECT *, it will not be considered in an INSERT INTO T VALUES statement. It can be accessed by any query that asks for it, it can be populated by an INSERT statement that references it, but you won't see it otherwise.For example, let's start with a simple two column table:ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> create table t 2 ( x int, 3 y int 4 ) 5 /Table created.ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> insert into t values ( 1, 2 );1 row created.Now, we will add an invisible column to it:ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> alter table t add ( z int INVISIBLE );Table altered.Notice that a DESCRIBE will not show us this column:ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> desc t Name Null? SSIS - Range lookups

When developing an ETL solution in SSIS we sometimes need to do range lookups in SSIS. Several solutions for this can be found on the internet, but now we have built another solution which I would like to share, since it's pretty easy to implement and the performance is fast. You can download the sample package to see how it works. Make sure you have the AdventureWorks2008R2 and AdventureWorksDW2008R2 databases installed. (Apologies for the layout of this blog, I don't do this too often :)) To give a little bit more information about the example, this is basically what is does: we load a facttable and do an SCD type 2 lookup operation of the Product dimension. This is done with a script component. First we query the Data warehouse to create the lookup dataset. The query that is used for that is: SELECT [ProductKey] ,[ProductAlternateKey] ,[StartDate] ,ISNULL([EndDate], '9999-01-01') AS EndDate FROM [DimProduct] The output of this query is stored in a DataTable: string lookupQuery = @" SELECT [ProductKey] ,[ProductAlternateKey] ,[StartDate] ,ISNULL([EndDate], '9999-01-01') AS EndDate FROM [DimProduct]"; OleDbCommand oleDbCommand = new OleDbCommand(lookupQuery, _oleDbConnection); OleDbDataAdapter adapter = new OleDbDataAdapter(oleDbCommand); _dataTable = new DataTable(); adapter.Fill(_dataTable); Now that the dimension data is stored in the DataTable we use the following method to do the actual lookup: public int RangeLookup(string businessKey, DateTime lookupDate) { // set default return value (Unknown) int result = -1; DataRow[] filteredRows; filteredRows = _dataTable.Select(string.Format("ProductAlternateKey = '{0}'", businessKey)); for (int i = 0; i < filteredRows.Length; i++) { // check if the lookupdate is found between the startdate and enddate of any of the records if (lookupDate >= (DateTime)filteredRows[i][2] && lookupDate < (DateTime)filteredRows[i][3]) { result = (filteredRows[i][0] == null) ? -1 : (int)filteredRows[i][0]; break; } } filteredRows = null; return result; } This method is executed for every row that passes the script component. This is implemented in the ProcessInputRow method public override void Input0_ProcessInputRow(Input0Buffer Row) { // Perform the lookup operation on the current row and put the value in the Surrogate Key Attribute Row.ProductKey = RangeLookup(Row.ProductNumber, Row.OrderDate); } Now what actually happens?! 1. Every record passes the business key and the orderdate to the RangeLookup method. 2. The DataTable is then filtered on the business key of the current record. The output is stored in a DataRow [] object. 3. We loop over the DataRow[] object to see where the orderdate meets the following expression: (lookupDate >= (DateTime)filteredRows[i][2] && lookupDate < (DateTime)filteredRows[i][3]) 4. When the expression returns true (so where the data is between the Startdate and the EndDate), the surrogate key of the dimension record is returned We have done some testing with this solution and it works great for us. Hope others can use this example to do their range lookups.

Modifying the SL/WIF Integration Bits to support Issued Token Credentials

The SL/WIF integration code that ships with the Identity Training Kit only supports Windows and UserName credentials to request tokens from an STS. This is fine for simple single STS scenarios (like a single IdP). But the more common pattern for claims/token based systems is to split the STS roles into an IdP and a Resource STS (or whatever you wanna call it). In this case, the 2nd leg requires to present the issued token from the 1st leg – this is not directly supported by the bits. But they can be easily modified to accomplish this. The Credential Fist we need a class that represents an issued token credential. Here we store the RSTR that got returned from the client to IdP request: public class IssuedTokenCredentials : IRequestCredentials { public string IssuedToken { get; set; } public RequestSecurityTokenResponse RSTR { get; set; } public IssuedTokenCredentials(RequestSecurityTokenResponse rstr) { RSTR = rstr; IssuedToken = rstr.RequestedSecurityToken.RawToken; } } The Binding Next we need a binding to be used with issued token credential requests. Accessing your web server via IPv6

Being able to run your systems on IPv6, have automatic address assignment and the ability to resolve host names are the necessary building blocks in your IPv6 network infrastructure. Now, that everything is in place it is about time that we are going to enable another service to respond to IPv6 requests. The following article will guide through the steps on how to enable Apache2 httpd to listen and respond to incoming IPv6 requests. This is the fourth article in a series on IPv6 configuration: Configure IPv6 on your Linux system DHCPv6: Provide IPv6 information in your local network Enabling DNS for IPv6 infrastructure Accessing your web server via IPv6 Piece of advice: This is based on my findings on the internet while reading other people's helpful articles and going through a couple of man-pages on my local system. Surfing the web - IPv6 style Enabling IPv6 connections in Apache 2 is fairly simply. But first let's check whether your system has a running instance of Apache2 or not. You can check this like so: $ service apache2 status Apache2 is running (pid 2680). In case that you got a 'service unknown' you have to install Apache to proceed with the following steps: $ sudo apt-get install apache2 Out of the box, Apache binds to all your available network interfaces and listens to TCP port 80. To check this, run the following command: $ sudo netstat -lnptu | grep "apache2\W*$"tcp6 0 0 :::80 :::* LISTEN 28306/apache2 In this case Apache2 is already binding to IPv6 (and implicitly to IPv4). If you only got a tcp output, then your HTTPd is not yet IPv6 enabled. Check your Listen directive, depending on your system this might be in a different location than the default in Ubuntu. $ sudo nano /etc/apache2/ports.conf # If you just change the port or add more ports here, you will likely also# have to change the VirtualHost statement in# /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default# This is also true if you have upgraded from before 2.2.9-3 (i.e. from# Debian etch). See /usr/share/doc/apache2.2-common/NEWS.Debian.gz and# README.Debian.gzNameVirtualHost *:80Listen 80<IfModule mod_ssl.c> # If you add NameVirtualHost *:443 here, you will also have to change # the VirtualHost statement in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default-ssl # to <VirtualHost *:443> # Server Name Indication for SSL named virtual hosts is currently not # supported by MSIE on Windows XP. Listen 443</IfModule><IfModule mod_gnutls.c> Listen 443</IfModule> Just in case that you don't have a ports.conf file, look for it like so: $ cd /etc/apache2/$ fgrep -r -i 'listen' ./* And modify the related file instead of the ports.conf. Which most probably might be either apache2.conf or httpd.conf anyways. Okay, please bear in mind that Apache can only bind once on the same interface and port. So, eventually, you might be interested to add another port which explicitly listens to IPv6 only. In that case, you would add the following in your configuration file: Listen 80Listen [2001:db8:bad:a55::2]:8080 But this is completely optional... Anyways, just to complete all steps, you save the file, and then check the syntax like so: $ sudo apache2ctl configtestSyntax OK Ok, now let's apply the modifications to our running Apache2 instances: $ sudo service apache2 reload * Reloading web server config apache2 ...done. $ sudo netstat -lnptu | grep "apache2\W*$" tcp6 0 0 2001:db8:bad:a55:::8080 :::* LISTEN 5922/apache2 tcp6 0 0 :::80 :::* LISTEN 5922/apache2 There we have two daemons running and listening to different TCP ports. Now, that the basics are in place, it's time to prepare any website to respond to incoming requests on the IPv6 address. Open up any configuration file you have below your sites-enabled folder. $ ls -al /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/... $ sudo nano /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default <VirtualHost *:80 [2001:db8:bad:a55::2]:8080> ServerAdmin [email protected] ServerName server.ios.mu ServerAlias server Here, we have to check and modify the VirtualHost directive and enable it to respond to the IPv6 address and port our web server is listening to. Save your changes, run the configuration test and reload Apache2 in order to apply your modifications. After successful steps you can launch your favourite browser and navigate to your IPv6 enabled web server. Accessing an IPv6 address in the browser That looks like a successful surgery to me... Note: In case that you received a timeout, check whether your client is operating on IPv6, too.

ADF Mobile - Update through Web Service (with ADF Business Components)

In my previous blog entry I went over the basics of exposing ADF Business Components through service interfaces, and developing a simple ADF Mobile application that access and fetches data from those services. In this entry we'll dive a bit deeper and address an update scenario through these web service interfaces. You can see the full demo video at the end of the post. In the first steps I show how to add an explicit method execution to fetch a specific record we want to update on the second page of a flow. For an update you'll be invoking a service method and passing the record you want to update as a parameter. As in many other Web services scenarios, we need to provide a complete object of specific type to the method. The ADF Web service data control helps you here by offering an object of this type that you can drag and drop into your page. The next step is to make sure to fill that object with the values you want to update. In the demo we do this through coding in a backing bean that shows how to use the AdfmfJavaUtilities utility. The code gets the value from one field, gets a pointer to the parallel update field, and then copy from one to the other. At the end of the bean we manually execute the call to the update method on the Web service. The format of the flat file is (an example): ManagementDomain1|Entitlement1|DIRECTORY SERVER,EMAIL ManagementDomain2|Entitlement2|EMAIL PROVIDER INSTANCE - UMS,EMAIL VERIFICATION In OIM there will be a parent form for fields Management domain and Entitlement.Reconciliation will assign Servers ( which are multi valued) to corresponding Management Domain and Entitlement .In the flat file , multi valued fields are seperated by comma(,). In the design console, Create a form with 'Server Name' as a field and make it a child form . Open the corresponding Resource Object and add this field for reconcilitaion.While adding , choose 'Multivalued' check box. (please find attached screen shot on how to add it , Child Table.docx) Open process definiton and add child form fields for recociliation. Please click on the 'Create Reconcilitaion Profile' buttton on the resource object tab. Windows Phone 7 and WS-Trust

A question that I often hear these days is: “Can I connect a Windows Phone 7 device to my existing enterprise services?”. Well – since most of my services are typically issued token based, this requires support for WS-Trust and WS-Security on the client. Let’s see what’s necessary to write a WP7 client for this scenario. First I converted the Silverlight library that comes with the Identity Training Kit to WP7. Some things are not supported in WP7 WCF (like message inspectors and some client runtime hooks) – but besides that this was a simple copy+paste job. Very nice! I have a multi lan port box that install ubuntu server 11.10. I am setup network in /etc/network/interfaces file as follow: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.128.254 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.128.0 broadcast 192.168.128.255 gateway 192.168.128.1 dns-nameservers xxxxxx auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.11.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.11.0 broadcast 192.168.11.255 auto eth2 iface eth2 inet static address 192.168.21.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.21.0 broadcast 192.168.21.255 auto eth3 iface eth3 inet static address 192.168.31.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.31.0 broadcast 192.168.31.255 I am also enable the ip forward by echo 1 /proc/sys/net/ipv4/if_forward in rc.local. my dnsmasq config as follow except-interface=eth0 dhcp-range=interface:eth1,set:wifi,192.168.11.101,192.168.11.200,255.255.255.0 dhcp-range=interface:eth2,set:kids,192.168.21.101,192.168.21.200,255.255.255.0 dhcp-range=interface:eth3,set:game,192.168.31.101,192.168.31.200,255.255.255.0 the dhcp was working fine in eth1,eth2,eth3, any machine plug in the subnet can get correct subnet's ip. My problem was, each subnet machine can't ping each other. for example. 192.168.11.101 can't ping 192.168.21.101 but can ping 192.168.128.1 192.168.31.101 can't ping 192.168.21.101 but can ping 192.168.128.1 I am also try to using route add -net 192.168.11.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.11.1 (and also 192.168.21.0/192.168.31.0) at this multi-lan-port machine. But still won't work. Does anyone can help ? Thanks.

We will add a FormView control on a web form and will bind data from the database. FormView is a great web server control for displaying the details of a single record. 1) Launch Visual Studio and open your solution where your project lives2) Add a new web form item on the project.Make sure you include the Master Page.Name it PosterDetails.aspx 3) Open the PosterDetails.aspx page. We will add some markup in this page.
