  I am looking a for a program to remember things with these features: Open files or programs in my own computer at a planned time. For example I want every morming at 8:00 the program open a particular mp3 file. But suposse, by mistake, that I on my computer and 9:00, then I want that the program rememberme what I planned to open at 8:00. Show me the program as an active windows on my desktop. The windows of the program opened is what the user is seeing (Is at the first place in the desktop) and the rest of the program windows are below. Close programs or files in my own computer at a planned time. For example I want that the program mp3 file that was opened at 8:00 was closed at 10:00 if at that time still be opened. Detection of events. For instance If I open particular videogame program. then a mp3 file (with a recording message arguing why I shouldn´t continue playing that videogame at work time) is opened. Possibility of combine the features mentioned before each other.

• Finding matching columns in excel

  I've never used excel before so I need the simplest solution available, and this is a work assignment due this week so I didn't have time read much of the documentation. Basically, I have two tables, A and B, and they are both thousands of rows long. Description of my task: right now (since I don't know better) I'm manually doing this: Go to row i in table B. Select entries in columns B(a, b, c) of that same row. Look for a row in table A where column A(b) matches row B(a). Paste the entries of columns B(a) of row i at the end of the row found in the last step. Repeat for row i + 1. Example: row B(cat, dog, mouse) matches A(mammal, cat, Mr. Whiskers). So I would paste B after A and have A(mammal, cat, Mr. Whiskers, cat, dog, mouse). Note: I am not joining tables. I am merely extending table A by pasting row A(b) if row A(b) matches row B(a). Also, sometimes entries are spelled slightly differently. Using wildcards to search for candidates would be of help. As the description should let on, this task is very tedious and inefficient if I don't know how to automate some operations (there are thousands of entries). Any quick tips as to how to be more productive is a big help.

• Experience with MQ File Transfer Edition?

  We've got several processes that move files across servers - SFTP, FTP, SCP; Windows, Linux, AIX; there is a workflow component (usually require a control file with filenames and hash values to move a batch of related files). The action is often initiated on our servers to get the files, so we need to make sure they're done being written. We have some homegrown scripts to do this, but they don't always work properly, and troubleshooting, maintenance, and log review is not easy this way. There's a lot of servers, and our scripts don't have central logging or a dashboard/console/etc. We're looking into commercial products to do this. Has anyone used MQ File Transfer Edition? Another team in our company is using Aspera, does anyone have any thoughts on that, or other favored products? I have no idea what our budget is for this, yet. Just trying to get a handle on the product space from the perspective of other admins.

• Automated Syslog Error Solution Finder

  Any automated syslog solution finding frameworks? I want my central syslog server to email a list of problems, their severity and suggested solutions. There have been several questions about centralising system logs and alternative log analysis systems, but I don't get the impression that any of them help with issue resolution. A little background: At work I am now literally doing the work of two people, and both jobs have expanded beyond their initial frameworks. It is not so bad as I have helpers, but they are little more than smart monkeys. While one of my predecessors [I have two, that is how I know I have the jobs of two people] set-up logwatch to email its results out, my monkeys don't have the skills necessary to identify unimportant data. This has caused all of them, and myself sadly, to setup email filters and ignore the whole thing until something goes "bang". It would be handy to have someone else tell them what is important, what is connected, and to suggest a few ways to resolve the issue (I could train then to research the solution first, ha!). My reading of the Splunk and Octopussy sites indicates that I still need to bring my own highly trained monkey to the party. Which I am several years from having.

• Java Deployment with automatic updates (without user confirmation)

  Here in our company our users use 1 Java application which is updated every monday and always needs the latest java update. We install Java on Clients through SCCM 2012 R2. I already know how to this, the only thing i can't figure out is how to automatically update Java on computers. This has to be silent, so we don't want users to get a pop up asking if they want to install the latest the Java update. We want Java to autoupdate when users logon on monday morning, with no possibility to cancel it. (At least no obvious way to cancel it, so no cancel button or anything basic) Been searching on google for a while now but most scenario's involve NOT wanting autoupdate.

  I really want to run MCollective on my fleet of servers however there are a large number of untrusted users on each machine which makes using MCollective not ideal in my eyes. I'm aware that there is some things you can do to take precaution but I'm not familiar enough with ActiveMQ / want something that's a bit more mindful of similar environments to mine outside the box. I'm looking for a fact collection like tool essentially. (Tagging under puppet / server since no mcollective tag and I don't have enough reputation to create a new one)

  when we use Expires header for text files like js, css, contents are cached in the browser, to get new content we need to change in the html file the new names in the link and script tag. When we add changes. How can we automate it. I may have some bunch of html files in multiple folders also in subdirectories. • Automated Linux VMs on Hyper-V 2012

  I have a requirement to create a ton of linux VMs for our customers (we run managed infrastructure) on Hyper-V 2012 in the coming months and I have an issue with automating it. Here is how I need it to work: User accesses their web page and creates a VM. VM is created with a unique IP and name User logs in over SSH I know Hyper-V quite well and can work with powershell and am a C# programmer so the development side of things is taken care of. I also know enough about Linux to be at least competent: I have used it on and off for a number of years but not done anything Enterprise-level with it. All this can be done easily by manual processes but I need to be able to script or program this to automate it as there could be hundreds of them being created but I don't know how. My first thought is to have a database with random-generated names and IPs already created but I don't know how to get a Linux VM to boot up and grab one from the database... I suppose a Kickstart script would take care of it but I don't know what to do from there. Here is what is bouncing around in my head: Create a std linux build. - Easy to do Someone clicks "Create VM" and I pull a name and IP from the database and write it to a kickstart script. - Easy to do I could then open the template VHDX file and copy in the script and then save it. - Not sure if possible User boots up new VM and the kickstart script gives it the name and IP I assigned it. My problem is that I don't know how to open a VHDX file and insert a kickstart script into it... can't figure it out. I am reaching here and this solution may be miles off... I am more used to creating Windows VMs with scripts and so on which i am more familiar with... any help would be appreciated. Thanks Mick

  If you're looking for MSN and / or Windows, just go here. I'm looking for Real-Time chat translation tools for Mac, and preferably using Adium, but it could be for Skype, iChat or maybe another option if it's really good. So far I could only easily find a plugin for Adium, simply called translator, that uses google, dicts and babelfish, but you have to type commands in and paste the words or sentences, and it's currently not even working on Snow Leopard. Even if it did, it's still not quite as automatic as we'd expect (or see in other platforms as indicated). So I'm just citing it as an example of a bad solution.

• Setup automated calling during an ETL failure

  Just started working on a large data warehouse project that runs some large ETLs every night. In the event of an error I receive an email, but I was hoping to somehow create something that will automatically call me, so I don't have to wake up and check my email at 4 every morning to make sure the ETLs finished properly. Once I finished editing I want to upload it to the server via FTP....is there some FTP software that automatically detects which files have been edited and have only those files uploaded and overwritten rather than having me manually choosing the files I've edited (and hence having to keep track of edited files) or have me upload the entire site which is a waste of time thanks in advance

• How can I get Windows 8 to automatically disable touch when I am using my Wacom pen and turn it back on when I am not

  I have an HP convertible tablet computer which I just upgraded to Windows 8. The problem (which existed under Windows 7 as well) is that this tablet has both a capacitive touch screen (with multi-touch) AND a wacom-type tablet built in to the screen that works using electro-magnetic resonance with the provided stylus. My Use Case: Most of the time I am happy using my fingers and the touch interface for navigation and whatnot. However, when I want to get down to serious note-taking/drawing, I want to use the wacom functionality. The problem is that any comfortable writing position has me resting my arm/hand on the screen, which activates the touch technology (despite supposed palm-detection algorithms) and completely screws up my input paradigm. My Ideal Solution: Ideallly, since wacom technology senses when the pen is "close" to the screen, I would love to have touch be automatically disabled whenever the wacom pen is detected, and turned back on when it is out of range. this would allow me to seamless switch between the two input methods, and since I NEVER want to use both at once would work perfectly for me. An acceptable alternative: As a next best option, It would be great to be able to turn off the touch functionality (leaving the wacom in place) whenever I entered specific apps (e.g. OneNote, Photoshop, Gimp, Pencil, etc.) and then have it turn back on when I left that app.... As a worst case at least lets me use my PC option: If I could create a shortcut (tile or otherwise) that flips the touch on and off without going all the way through the nested computer settings, that would be better than nothing. • Split (parts of) image into several smaller (same size) pieces non-manually

  If I have an image with a table containing several rows, say like the periodic table: Are there any tool I can use to split this into one smaller image with the H He row, another image for the Li Be ... Ne row, etc? The tool does not have to detect the row borders by itself, specifying a start offset + row height in pixels is ok. Manually selecting and cutting/copying in gimp is not an option, I have way to many rows to process.

• PsExec - what if the .exe you run remotely requires user interaction?

  I use PsExec to deploy small .exe files to my workstations. Sometimes the .exe, for some reason, is incompatible with the system and opens a popup window with an error or some other message. Is there any way to know when the executable is 'stuck' there requiring user interaction? On my side I just have psexec running and waiting for the .exe to return (which will never return because the popup is stuck there). Since I run PsExec programmatically and I automate all the executions, when this Popup thing happens I find myself with hundreds of psexec processes stuck there and have no result back from them.. What's the best way to handle this sort of issue? Thanks.

• Looking for a software / something to automate some simple audio processing

  I'm looking for a way to take a 1-hour podcast MP3 file and split it into several several 2-minute MP3s. Along the way, I'd like to also do a few things like Amplify the volume. The problem I'm solving is that I have a crappy MP3 player that won't let me seek forward or backward, nor will it remember where I left it when I turn it off, plus, I listen to these in a seriously high-noise situation. Thus, I need to be able to skip forward in large chunks (2-5 minutes) to the point where I left it. Is there any decent way to do this? Audacity doesn't seem to have command-line capabilities. I'm willing to write some code, for example, to call something over the command line and get how long the MP3 file is, to later know how many pieces i'll have, and then say "create an MP3 with 0:00 to 2:00", "create an MP3 with 2:00 to 4:00", etc. I'm also willing to pay for the right tools if necessary. I also don't care how slow this runs, as long as I can automate it :-) I'm doing this on Windows. Any pointers / ideas? Thanks!

• Can I autologin a specific user on a specific VT, but still have other login shells running?

  I'm running a linux system with Ubuntu Karmic on it, and I use it to run a webcam and a program that continuously outputs on the console. Is there any way I can force a user to login on VT2, and then switch VTs to VT2, but still have other login consoles running so I can hook a keyboard up to it and CTRL-ALT-F# to get to another terminal? I have a feeling this needs to go in my rc.local file, but nothing in the login manpage seems to suggest it can do what I want it to do. If there is no way to login a user on the vt, launching the program directly on a specific VT will work as well, since the user's shell in /etc/passwd is set to the program anyway.

I've been using Total Recorder which has the following useful features: Handy scheduler Supports creating recording templates, so I can customize some high/low quality recording Unfortunately it requires opening the streaming radio in a browser and can't have another sound source at the same time; it's recording what comes out from the speaker. • SSH to remote host (edgemarc 4200 or 4500 series routers) and pull arp data

  I've been trying to think of a method to do this for days, but have not come up with anything yet. Ideally, this is what I'm looking to do: From a windows XP machine, I need to open an SSH connection to a remote host, send the arp command, and pull the text results of the command back for use on the client. I will need to parse this data and preferably produce a 2D array of IPs and MAC addresses. There will be no shared keys, this is all done with a username and password that will always be different, they will need to be fed into the command via variables that will be pulled from a database using an autoit script based on the WAN ip of the remote host. Now the actual parsing of the data and creation of the array will be easy if I can just get the text of the arp table. Is there any way to ssh to a remote host, run a command and return the data from that command to the client in a batch script or perl script (it is ok if it writes the text to a file, I can read it out of the file later, I just need it to get to the client)?
