• UK-based web hosting with Django support

  I'm planning to set up a personal website in the near future, and I'd like to use Django on the site. I haven't yet made any decisions about hosting and I was thinking of going with Fasthosts, who support Python, but their website doesn't mention Django at all. Anyone know whether they support it or not? If not, can anyone recommend a good UK-based web host that does support Django?

• Distinction between Cloud Servers and VPS

  What is the distinction between a Cloud based host and a VPS? I talked to a Rackspace Cloud sales person for around 45 minutes and never came to a real conclusion on this. So, to elaborate on my question a bit -- what benefits might a "cloud" server provide me versus a VPS provider such as Linode and vice versa -- what benefits would a VPS provide over a cloud provider? From what I've been able to ascertain, when you host on a cloud (with Rackspace Cloud) you get a instance of Linux in which you install software and such (a LAMP, for instance). From what I can figure, if the instance is running, I am charged and the pricing on Rackspace (according to what I understood from the sales rep) comes out to about $20 a month.... I was thinking a cloud customer pays per processing hours -- so if your app just sits there, no charges are incurred. Does one not pay of the cloud instance is shut down, perhaps? • DNS PTR record when domain on shared IP address

  Hello, I own a typical shared IP hosting plan and domain. I can modify the DNS of the domain from the control panel. The mailserver shares the same IP address, so my typical DNS config is: www.mydomain.com A -> IP mydomain.com A -> IP ftp.mydomain.com A -> IP mail.mydomain.com A -> IP mydomain.com MX(10) -> IP I read some Q&A on this site where they suggest to add PTR record mainly for mailserver. I would like to add PTR record to my domain, I have got two questions: 1) can PTR record be added even if the hosting/mailserver are on a shared IP address? Or do I need a dedicated IP. 2) How do I setup PTR record, I mean does it look like A record: mydomain.com (PTR) -> myip

• I need a relatively cheap host, which will be able to handle sudden peaks in traffic?

  Hello, We're launching a product in a few months, which will obviously have a website. Judging from our current traffic, we believe that overall traffic will probably not be that much, but we are aiming at promoting the site heavily using social media. This has the typical problem, that IF we get suddenly get picked up by a large tech blog, we will see a sudden burst: A very heavy increase in traffic all of the sudden. If we use a cheap charlie host as our current host is (www.unoeuro.com) or something similar like GoDaddy, I'm afraid that the site will go down under the load. If that happens, then we might as well have thrown our social media marketing dollars out of the window. Our site will be relatively lightweight, all videos hosted at Youtube or Vimeo and other than that mainly just a standard webpage (ie nothing too heavy). I am hoping for recommendations for a good hosting company, which has some form of scalable hosting, so if / when a traffic surge hits, the site will not go down.

• What measures should be taken to prevent File System Object from accessing directories of other customers on an IIS shared web host?

  We have our website on an IIS shared hosting server. While working on a file monitor for our site, we have found that the File System Object allows us to enumerate the directories and files of other customers that are on the same server as us. Attempting to enumerate files in some root customer directories results in access denied errors - but not all. Is this an IIS configuration error? A Windows configuration error? How can we direct our hosting company to fix the problem?

• Which free open source CPanel and WHM alternatives do you recommend/use?

  I have been using webmin for some time now, however I miss the elegance and ease of WHM/CPanel combo I've had on shared hosting (and later dedicated hosting) platform. Looking around the web, all I have found that is somewhat at the level of WHM/CPanel was webmin - but WHM/CPanel it is not. Since I'm using this only for our projects, it doesn't matter in the end really. However, we do put our new customers on our servers too, so some sort of CPanel might be an easier thing for them to cope with (mostly going about Email accounts stuff and such). Currently my stack is LAMP (CentOS and Ubuntu Server - several machines, probably ditching CentOS soon in favor of Ubuntu). There is a prospect of Python/Django instead of PHP, but it might take awhile.

  I'm not trying to start a "which language is better" argument here, so please don't go there. I typically use PHP for most of my web development (mostly because hosting is cheap), but for various reasons I'm looking to use ASP.NET for a couple new projects. But one of the major reasons I've stayed away from ASP.NET up until now is the cost. I've seen some budget hosting options, but they always seem a little sketchy to me. From what I've generally found, that's just the way the hosting scene looks for ASP.NET unless you want to go dedicated. Does anyone have any good suggestions for a solid ASP.NET host with a good feature set and reliability for my money? Also, are there any options out there along the lines of Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud? And yes, I know... Mono. I'm talking about Windows based "grid" hosting options?

• Hosting a complex online service

  I have an idea for a web-based service. The implementation is very complex. There will be very few users, and the traffice will be fairly low, but the server-side code could require a lot of resources. Ideally I'd need to have as much control over the servers as possible. How should I arrange hosting for this, when it comes time to release it to the public? Should I do the hosting myself, from my own servers? Trouble is, since I'm not quite an expert on .NET hosting, it might take time to learn and I might make big mistakes. The trouble with using a hosting company is, they might steal my idea, or else, it might cost a lot. Since I'm an un-funded startup I don't have a lot of money to throw at this.

  I'm using webhost4life shared hosting right now. They have a 99.99% up-time guarantee, but it is definitely not. Their support has been good when I do contact them, but it's just not stable. The site will just go down at random times for 5-10 minutes at a time. I know I'm on shared hosting, but I was hoping it would be more stable than it is. My app isn't at the point where it would need dedicated hosting yet, if the shared was stable enough. Any affordable hosting that you can vouch for (that supports ASP.NET MVC)?

  Hello Experts, We have an enterprise web app to which our clients post/upload lots of documents [mainly images and pdf files] via web interface, iphone app etc etc. We are also using imagick to split pdf documents into images. Also, large number of mysql SELECT/UPDATE/DELETE queries happen all day. Currently, all of this is happening on same server and we are planning to split the process in 3 stages : 1) a server only for database 2) a server only for documents (document upload, splitting etc) 3) a server for the main php web app Is there any drawback with this kind of structure as compared to hosting everything on same server ? Also, when the problem randomly fixes itself, it still occurs when viewing specific projects. Any ideas on a fix?

• View httpd/lighttpd modules that are installed on shared hosting

  I don't have access to the httpd.conf file on this shared host, but I wanted to see which modules are enabled/installed. Is there a (easy) way to find out without access to the httpd.conf file? For example, with PHP you can run a file that has phpinfo() in it to get the PHP info. Anything similar? The web server is lighttpd, which I understand is mostly compatible with apache httpd. (And yes, I am going to email the hosting support, but it sure would be nice to know for the future)

• Django Dying on Shared Hosting Environment (Too Many MySQL Connections)

  I've had a Django site up and running on HostGator (client requirement), following these instructions, for a few weeks now. I had seen two error emails about pages dying with (1040: Too many MySQL connections) but had never been able to recreate the problem. As of today, the site is completely unresponsive and all pages, even the static files, are dying with that error. Two questions: What can I do to fix this (other than caching more stuff)? Why would static files be dying like that? I can request them directly without a problem, so how are they getting run through Django? The shared hosting setup doesn't allow for a <Location> block, but there's a flag in the rewrite rule that says only requests for files that don't exist in the filesystem should be processed. All of my static files exist on the system, though they are symbolically linked files if it matters.

• Media Temple-like hosting services?

  I have a couple of wordpress sites which do not get much traffic now, but I plan on expanding to something like a 1000-2000visits/day in a year or two. Media Temple has some really nice offerings, but their Wordpress plan is 20/month...which is a little too much, seeing as at this point my site is more of a hobby than a money making machine. I currently host with HostGator (just switched from GodaddyiPageBluehost). All these cheaper/pop hosting services are okay, but it would be nice to find something a little bit more "premium", but at a lower cost than MT. Anyone know anything worth looking at?

• Catering for client's web-hosting needs, minus the headaches ?

  I'll be trying to sell my Ruby on Rails development skills to small local businesses. It seems I'd be shooting myself in the foot if I couldn't manage to put their apps into production, in fact catering for this would be a selling point. However, I do not want to bill every client monthly for the cost of their hosting, they would have to be the contract holders with the hosting service, and I'd only consult if they needed technical help when scaling. I've looked on one hand at cloud platforms, like engine yard, which seem like they would be too costly for the smaller clients, and on the other hand at vps providers which seem they would not be client friendly enough. Has anyone faced the same issue and come up with a decent solution ?

  I've created a social networking community which is soon ready to release, and I'm trying to decide on a type of hosting plan. I have considered options such as VPS and Reseller plans. I anticipate (or hope for at least) a significant amount of traffic/bandwidth in the not-too-distant future. If I open a reseller, will I receive the same amount of server lag during busy hours that I do with a shared account? How significant is the profit margin with the reseller option? • Choosing the right language for the job

  I'm currently working for a company on the engineering team of about 5-6 people and have been given the job of heading up the redesign of an embedded system tester. We've decided the general requirements and attributes that would be desirable in the system, and now I have to decide on a language to use for the system, or at the very least come up with a list of languages with pros and cons to present to the team. The general idea of the project is that we currently have a tester written in c++, which was never designed to be a tester, but instead has evolved to be such over the course of 3-4 years due to need. Writing tests for a new product requires modifying the 'framework' and writing code that is completely non-human readable or intuitive due to the way the system was originally designed. Now, we've decided that the time to modify this tester for each new product that we want to test has become too high and want to partially re-write the system so that we can program the actual tests in a scripting language that would then use the modified c++ framework on the back end to test the actual systems. The c++ framework would be responsible for doing all the actual work and the scripting language would just integrate with that to tell the framework what to do. Never having programmed in a scripting language (we program embedded systems), I've run into a wall where I have no experience with any of the languages that we could possibly use, but must somehow give pros and cons of each language so that we can choose the best one for the job. Currently my short list of possibilities includes: Python TCL Lua Perl My question is this: How can a person evaluate a language that he/she has never used before? What criteria are good indicators for a languages potential usability on a project? While helpful suggestions for my particular case are appreciated, I feel that this is a good skill to possess and would like to be able to apply this to many different projects if at all possible

• Ubuntu web site hosting & free ,tk domain

  Hello, I am sort of new to web hosting so sorry if I ask bad questions. I have a pc that runs ubuntu I instaled apache and now I host a web site, but I need a domain name so I found out .tk is free. The site works when typing 192.168.1.x in the browser(x= a number) but in dot.tk when I register in ip it whats one that look like 79.117.x.x so thats where I get stuck, I think I managed to make my ip address static but it still looks like 192.168.1.x and I can't put that in because it says: " This IP address is not valid". Why must it have the ip address that looks like 79.117.x.x and won't work with the internal static one and how can I do to host my site with a .tk domain name ? PS: I'm using a cisco router that's connected with computer via a cable.

• How do I go about hosting facebook apps that are picking speed?

  My situation is this. I coded in php and built a facebook app. After 3 days it has 13,000 users. I have my own server at hostmonster. It is a regular plan costing me about $70 per year. It has unlimited bandwidth. I did not anticipate hosting apps or that it could pick up so many users. Already 1 Gb of data was transferred in the last few days. I am planning to build a few more apps(around 10 - 20) and reach atleast a million users in total. Should I continue hosting on the same server or move to a VPS? I am a student and I don't have too much of a disposable income. So I want to move only if it is necessary. Right now it shows 1 Gb/infinity in data transfer. Any help/suggestions highly appreciated.

  Hi, Im a php developer and I would like to offer subdomain hosting,but need also to be able to calculate bandwidth for each subdomain. For the subdomains creation I will use catch-all and wildcards etc to easily set these up. The one thing im a bit stumped on is how to calculate bandwidth for each subdomain, is this possible within php? or are there better solutions for this perhaps using folders or something? Also a script will be loaded under the subdomain, this will vary per user. Is it worth giving each user a new folder and their own script, or more easy to manage one script for all users?   I'm looking for recommendations for hosting an asp.net MVC application. Obviously, we need to be able to have access to configure IIS directly - I'd prefer not to have to go thru a control panel. The web server needs to have a dedicated IP, since some clients will be accessing it via IP. We need at least a SQLServer 2005 database, ideally on the same box. Load and usage will be pretty low, so a virtual machine will probably be fine. Does any one have any recommendations that meet the above constraints?

• What can I use to set up a 100% cloud based python IDE + Hosting environment?

  I'm working a side project and I can't always be on "my" machine to code/deploy the web application. I am aware of various cloud IDEs (e.g., Cloud 9 IDE) and independent Django/Flask etc., hosting services (e.g., Heroku). What is the best way to completely shift my development/deployment environment to the cloud so that I can code/deploy from anywhere? I don't mind using paid services but I'm not sure which cloud IDEs play nice with which hosting services. Has anyone tried this setup before? What has or hasn't worked? • Our server hosting provider asked for our root password

  I work at a company that develops and hosts a small business critical system. We have an "Elastic cloud server" from a professional hosting provider. I recently got an email from them saying that they've had some problems with their backup solution and that they needed to install a new kernel. And they wanted us to send them the root password so they could do this work. I know that the email came from them. It's not [email protected] or anything like that. I called them and asked them about this, and they were like "yep, we need the password to do this". It just seems odd to send the root password over email like this. Do I have any reason to be concerned?

  I am using to study (and at some point of time copy the desired module of) the code from these two sites (Google Code and Github). There is sourceforge too, I have some code, say some library that I want to share with the community, and I am to decide the hosting site. And before I decide I want to have opinions from this community. Which is your favorite Project hosting site or service? And why? There is one point where github can win over google code (may be I am wrong here), Github can let you forge whole project with a zip or tar file, but to do the same in google code we have to upload the zip file explicitly and put it in downloads....
