  • surfaceDestroyed called out of turn

    - by Avasulthiris
    I'm currently developing on minimum sdk version 3 (Android 1.5 - cupcake) and I'm having a strange unexplained issue that I have not been able to solve on my own. It is now becoming a rather urgent issue as I've already missed 1 deadline... I'm writing a high-level library to make long term android development easier and quicker. The one specific module has to capture images for a application... I've gotten everything right so far over the last couple months, except this one little thing and I don't know what to do any more: When I use the Camera object and implement a SurfaceHolder.Callback, the methods surfaceCreated() and surfaceChanged() are called one after the other. Then when the activity finishes, surfaceDestroyed() is called. This is how it should be, but when I stick the exact same code in my library (plain Java library that references the Android API - not in an activity), surfaceDestroyed() is called directly after created and changed. As a result - the camera object is closed before I can use it and the application force closes. What a pain. I can't do anything! This method call is controlled by the device.. Why does the surface close for no reason? Even when I post it to run on the activity thread through my own invokeAndWait(Runnable) method, like I do for many other things. I have 5 different working examples of different ways and implementations of capturing images in android but I still get the same issue when I plug it into my library. I don't understand what the difference is. The code is pretty much the same - and I post all the related code to the UI thread so its not a thread handling issue or anything like that. I've rewritten it about 20 times in different ways - same issue every time.. The only other way to approach it that I know of is creating a new Camera and setting it to the VideoView. The android source (c++ native code) however provides no Camera constructor, only an open() method which automatically forwards the camera's state to 'prepared' but I can only set the camera to the VideoView from the 'initialized' state. Pretty silly, I know, but there is no way around it unless I modify the Android library source code haha. not an option! The API does not allow for this method - you are expected to use it like my first example. So essentially - i just need to understand exactly why surfaceDestroyed() is called out of turn and if there is anything I can do to avoid it closing? If i can just understand the exact logic behind it and how it works! The documentation isn't much help! Secondly, if someone knows of any alternative ways to do it, as my second example, but hopefully one which the API actually allows for? haha Thanks guys. I would post code, but its fairly complicated, a couple thousand lines for this specific class and it would probably take a couple days to explain with all the threading and event listeners and what not. I just need help with this 1 single thing. Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • parallel computation for an Iterator of elements in Java

    - by Brian Harris
    I've had the same need a few times now and wanted to get other thoughts on the right way to structure a solution. The need is to perform some operation on many elements on many threads without needing to have all elements in memory at once, just the ones under computation. As in, Iterables.partition is insufficient because it brings all elements into memory up front. Expressing it in code, I want to write a BulkCalc2 that does the same thing as BulkCalc1, just in parallel. Below is sample code that illustrates my best attempt. I'm not satisfied because it's big and ugly, but it does seem to accomplish my goals of keeping threads highly utilized until the work is done, propagating any exceptions during computation, and not having more than numThreads instances of BigThing necessarily in memory at once. I'll accept the answer which meets the stated goals in the most concise way, whether it's a way to improve my BulkCalc2 or a completely different solution. interface BigThing { int getId(); String getString(); } class Calc { // somewhat expensive computation double calc(BigThing bigThing) { Random r = new Random(bigThing.getString().hashCode()); double d = 0; for (int i = 0; i < 100000; i++) { d += r.nextDouble(); } return d; } } class BulkCalc1 { final Calc calc; public BulkCalc1(Calc calc) { this.calc = calc; } public TreeMap<Integer, Double> calc(Iterator<BigThing> in) { TreeMap<Integer, Double> results = Maps.newTreeMap(); while (in.hasNext()) { BigThing o = in.next(); results.put(o.getId(), calc.calc(o)); } return results; } } class SafeIterator<T> { final Iterator<T> in; SafeIterator(Iterator<T> in) { this.in = in; } synchronized T nextOrNull() { if (in.hasNext()) { return in.next(); } return null; } } class BulkCalc2 { final Calc calc; final int numThreads; public BulkCalc2(Calc calc, int numThreads) { this.calc = calc; this.numThreads = numThreads; } public TreeMap<Integer, Double> calc(Iterator<BigThing> in) { ExecutorService e = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(numThreads); List<Future<?>> futures = Lists.newLinkedList(); final Map<Integer, Double> results = new MapMaker().concurrencyLevel(numThreads).makeMap(); final SafeIterator<BigThing> it = new SafeIterator<BigThing>(in); for (int i = 0; i < numThreads; i++) { futures.add(e.submit(new Runnable() { @Override public void run() { while (true) { BigThing o = it.nextOrNull(); if (o == null) { return; } results.put(o.getId(), calc.calc(o)); } } })); } e.shutdown(); for (Future<?> future : futures) { try { future.get(); } catch (InterruptedException ex) { // swallowing is OK } catch (ExecutionException ex) { throw Throwables.propagate(ex.getCause()); } } return new TreeMap<Integer, Double>(results); } }

  • Unnecessary Java context switches

    - by Paul Morrison
    I have a network of Java Threads (Flow-Based Programming) communicating via fixed-capacity channels - running under WindowsXP. What we expected, based on our experience with "green" threads (non-preemptive), would be that threads would switch context less often (thus reducing CPU time) if the channels were made bigger. However, we found that increasing channel size does not make any difference to the run time. What seems to be happening is that Java decides to switch threads even though channels aren't full or empty (i.e. even though a thread doesn't have to suspend), which costs CPU time for no apparent advantage. Also changing Thread priorities doesn't make any observable difference. My question is whether there is some way of persuading Java not to make unnecessary context switches, but hold off switching until it is really necessary to switch threads - is there some way of changing Java's dispatching logic? Or is it reacting to something I didn't pay attention to?! Or are there other asynchronism mechanisms, e.g. Thread factories, Runnable(s), maybe even daemons (!). The answer appears to be non-obvious, as so far none of my correspondents has come up with an answer (including most recently two CS profs). Or maybe I'm missing something that's so obvious that people can't imagine my not knowing it... I've added the send and receive code here - not very elegant, but it seems to work...;-) In case you are wondering, I thought the goLock logic in 'send' might be causing the problem, but removing it temporarily didn't make any difference. I have added the code for send and receive... public synchronized Packet receive() { if (isDrained()) { return null; } while (isEmpty()) { try { wait(); } catch (InterruptedException e) { close(); return null; } if (isDrained()) { return null; } } if (isDrained()) { return null; } if (isFull()) { notifyAll(); // notify other components waiting to send } Packet packet = array[receivePtr]; array[receivePtr] = null; receivePtr = (receivePtr + 1) % array.length; //notifyAll(); // only needed if it was full usedSlots--; packet.setOwner(receiver); if (null == packet.getContent()) { traceFuncs("Received null packet"); } else { traceFuncs("Received: " + packet.toString()); } return packet; } synchronized boolean send(final Packet packet, final OutputPort op) { sender = op.sender; if (isClosed()) { return false; } while (isFull()) { try { wait(); } catch (InterruptedException e) { indicateOneSenderClosed(); return false; } sender = op.sender; } if (isClosed()) { return false; } try { receiver.goLock.lockInterruptibly(); } catch (InterruptedException ex) { return false; } try { packet.clearOwner(); array[sendPtr] = packet; sendPtr = (sendPtr + 1) % array.length; usedSlots++; // move this to here if (receiver.getStatus() == StatusValues.DORMANT || receiver.getStatus() == StatusValues.NOT_STARTED) { receiver.activate(); // start or wake up if necessary } else { notifyAll(); // notify receiver // other components waiting to send to this connection may also get // notified, // but this is handled by while statement } sender = null; Component.network.active = true; } finally { receiver.goLock.unlock(); } return true; }

  • Update UI from an event with a thread

    - by tyrone-tudehope
    Im working on a small application to try out an idea that I have. The idea is to periodically update the UI when event of some sort occurs. In the demo I've created, I'm updating a ProgressDialog every 2 seconds for 15 turns. The problem I am having, which I don't quite understand is that when an event is handled, I send a message to the handler which is supposed to update the message in the ProgressDialog. When this happens however, I get an exception which states that I can't update the UI from that thread. The following code appears in my Activity: ProgressDialog diag; String diagMessage = "Started loading..."; final static int MESSAGE_DATA_RECEIVED = 0; final static int MESSAGE_RECEIVE_COMPLETED = 1; final Handler handler = new Handler(){ @Override public void handleMessage(Message msg){ diag.setMessage(diagMessage); switch(msg.what){ case MESSAGE_DATA_RECEIVED: break; case MESSAGE_RECEIVE_COMPLETED: dismissDialog(); killDialog(); break; } } }; Boolean isRunning = false; /** * Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setupDialog(); if(isRunning){ showDialog(); } setContentView(R.layout.main); } void setupDialog(){ if(diag == null){ diag = new ProgressDialog(ThreadLoading.this); diag.setMessage(diagMessage); } } void showDialog(){ isRunning = true; if(diag != null && !diag.isShowing()){ diag.show(); } } void dismissDialog(){ if(diag != null && diag.isShowing()){ diag.dismiss(); } } void killDialog(){ isRunning = false; } public void onStart(){ super.onStart(); showDialog(); Thread background = new Thread(new Runnable(){ public void run(){ try{ final ThreadRunner tr = new ThreadRunner(); tr.setOnDataReceivedListener(new ThreadRunner.OnDataReceivedListener(){ public void onDataReceived(String message){ diagMessage = message; handler.handleMessage(handler.obtainMessage(MESSAGE_DATA_RECEIVED)); } }); tr.setOnDataDownloadCompletedEventListener(new ThreadRunner.OnDataDownloadCompletedListener(){ public void onDataDownloadCompleted(String message){ diagMessage = message; handler.handleMessage(handler.obtainMessage(MESSAGE_RECEIVE_COMPLETED)); } }); tr.runProcess(); } catch(Throwable t){ throw new RuntimeException(t); } } }); background.start(); } @Override public void onPause(){ super.onPause(); dismissDialog(); } For curiosity sake, here's the code for the ThreadRunner class: public interface OnDataReceivedListener { public void onDataReceived(String message); } public interface OnDataDownloadCompletedListener { public void onDataDownloadCompleted(String message); } private OnDataReceivedListener onDataReceivedEventListener; private OnDataDownloadCompletedListener onDataDownloadCompletedEventListener; int maxLoop = 15; int loopCount = 0; int sleepTime = 2000; public void setOnDataReceivedListener(OnDataReceivedListener onDataReceivedListener){ this.onDataReceivedEventListener = onDataReceivedListener; } public void setOnDataDownloadCompletedEventListener(OnDataDownloadCompletedListener onDataDownloadCompletedListener){ this.onDataDownloadCompletedEventListener = onDataDownloadCompletedListener; } public void runProcess(){ for(loopCount = 0; loopCount < maxLoop; loopCount++){ try{ Thread.sleep(sleepTime); onDataReceivedEventListener.onDataReceived(Integer.toString(loopCount)); } catch(Throwable t){ throw new RuntimeException(t); } } onDataDownloadCompletedEventListener.onDataDownloadCompleted("Download is completed"); } Am I missing something? The logic makes sense to me and it looks like everything should work, I'm using a handler to update the UI like it is recommended. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Tyrone P.S. I'm developing for Android 1.5

  • Concurrency and Calendar classes

    - by fbielejec
    I have a thread (class implementing runnable, called AnalyzeTree) organised around a hash map (ConcurrentMap slicesMap). The class goes through the data (called trees here) in the large text file and parses the geographical coordinates from it to the HashMap. The idea is to process one tree at a time and add or grow the values according to the key (which is just a Double value representing time). The relevant part of code looks like this: // grow map entry if key exists if (slicesMap.containsKey(sliceTime)) { double[] imputedLocation = imputeValue( location, parentLocation, sliceHeight, nodeHeight, parentHeight, rate, useTrueNoise, currentTreeNormalization, precisionArray); slicesMap.get(sliceTime).add( new Coordinates(imputedLocation[1], imputedLocation[0], 0.0)); // start new entry if no such key in the map } else { List<Coordinates> coords = new ArrayList<Coordinates>(); double[] imputedLocation = imputeValue( location, parentLocation, sliceHeight, nodeHeight, parentHeight, rate, useTrueNoise, currentTreeNormalization, precisionArray); coords.add(new Coordinates(imputedLocation[1], imputedLocation[0], 0.0)); slicesMap.putIfAbsent(sliceTime, coords); // slicesMap.put(sliceTime, coords); }// END: key check And the class is called like this (executor is ExecutorService executor = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(NTHREDS) ): mrsd = new SpreadDate(mrsdString); int readTrees = 1; while (treesImporter.hasTree()) { currentTree = (RootedTree) treesImporter.importNextTree(); executor.submit(new AnalyzeTree(currentTree, precisionString, coordinatesName, rateString, numberOfIntervals, treeRootHeight, timescaler, mrsd, slicesMap, useTrueNoise)); // new AnalyzeTree(currentTree, precisionString, // coordinatesName, rateString, numberOfIntervals, // treeRootHeight, timescaler, mrsd, slicesMap, // useTrueNoise).run(); readTrees++; }// END: while has trees Now this is running into troubles when executed in parallel (the commented part running sequentially is fine), I thought it might throw a ConcurrentModificationException, but apparently the problem is in mrsd (instance of SpreadDate object, which is simply a class for date related calculations). The SpreadDate class looks like this: public class SpreadDate { private Calendar cal; private SimpleDateFormat formatter; private Date stringdate; public SpreadDate(String date) throws ParseException { // if no era specified assume current era String line[] = date.split(" "); if (line.length == 1) { StringBuilder properDateStringBuilder = new StringBuilder(); date = properDateStringBuilder.append(date).append(" AD") .toString(); } formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd G", Locale.US); stringdate = formatter.parse(date); cal = Calendar.getInstance(); } public long plus(int days) { cal.setTime(stringdate); cal.add(Calendar.DATE, days); return cal.getTimeInMillis(); }// END: plus public long minus(int days) { cal.setTime(stringdate); cal.add(Calendar.DATE, -days); //line 39 return cal.getTimeInMillis(); }// END: minus public long getTime() { cal.setTime(stringdate); return cal.getTimeInMillis(); }// END: getDate } And the stack trace from when exception is thrown: java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 58 at sun.util.calendar.BaseCalendar.getCalendarDateFromFixedDate(BaseCalendar.java:454) at java.util.GregorianCalendar.computeFields(GregorianCalendar.java:2098) at java.util.GregorianCalendar.computeFields(GregorianCalendar.java:2013) at java.util.Calendar.setTimeInMillis(Calendar.java:1126) at java.util.GregorianCalendar.add(GregorianCalendar.java:1020) at utils.SpreadDate.minus(SpreadDate.java:39) at templates.AnalyzeTree.run(AnalyzeTree.java:88) at java.util.concurrent.Executors$RunnableAdapter.call(Executors.java:471) at java.util.concurrent.FutureTask$Sync.innerRun(FutureTask.java:334) at java.util.concurrent.FutureTask.run(FutureTask.java:166) at java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor.runWorker(ThreadPoolExecutor.java:1110) at java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor$Worker.run(ThreadPoolExecutor.java:603) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:636) If a move the part initializing mrsd to the AnalyzeTree class it runs without any problems - however it is not very memory efficient to initialize class each time this thread is running, hence my concerns. How can it be remedied?

  • How to unit test synchronized code

    - by gillJ
    Hi, I am new to Java and junit. I have the following peice of code that I want to test. Would appreciate if you could send your ideas about what's the best way to go about testing it. Basically, the following code is about electing a leader form a Cluster. The leader holds a lock on the shared cache and services of the leader get resumed and disposed if it somehow looses the lock on the cache. How can i make sure that a leader/thread still holds the lock on the cache and that another thread cannot get its services resumed while the first is in execution? public interface ContinuousService { public void resume(); public void pause(); } public abstract class ClusterServiceManager { private volatile boolean leader = false; private volatile boolean electable = true; private List<ContinuousService> services; protected synchronized void onElected() { if (!leader) { for (ContinuousService service : services) { service.resume(); } leader = true; } } protected synchronized void onDeposed() { if (leader) { for (ContinuousService service : services) { service.pause(); } leader = false; } } public void setServices(List<ContinuousService> services) { this.services = services; } @ManagedAttribute public boolean isElectable() { return electable; } @ManagedAttribute public boolean isLeader() { return leader; } public class TangosolLeaderElector extends ClusterServiceManager implements Runnable { private static final Logger log = LoggerFactory.getLogger(TangosolLeaderElector.class); private String election; private long electionWaitTime= 5000L; private NamedCache cache; public void start() { log.info("Starting LeaderElector ({})",election); Thread t = new Thread(this, "LeaderElector ("+election+")"); t.setDaemon(true); t.start(); } public void run() { // Give the connection a chance to start itself up try { Thread.sleep(1000); } catch (InterruptedException e) {} boolean wasElectable = !isElectable(); while (true) { if (isElectable()) { if (!wasElectable) { log.info("Leadership requested on election: {}",election); wasElectable = isElectable(); } boolean elected = false; try { // Try and get the lock on the LeaderElectorCache for the current election if (!cache.lock(election, electionWaitTime)) { // We didn't get the lock. cycle round again. // This code to ensure we check the electable flag every now & then continue; } elected = true; log.info("Leadership taken on election: {}",election); onElected(); // Wait here until the services fail in some way. while (true) { try { Thread.sleep(electionWaitTime); } catch (InterruptedException e) {} if (!cache.lock(election, 0)) { log.warn("Cache lock no longer held for election: {}", election); break; } else if (!isElectable()) { log.warn("Node is no longer electable for election: {}", election); break; } // We're fine - loop round and go back to sleep. } } catch (Exception e) { if (log.isErrorEnabled()) { log.error("Leadership election " + election + " failed (try bfmq logs for details)", e); } } finally { if (elected) { cache.unlock(election); log.info("Leadership resigned on election: {}",election); onDeposed(); } // On deposition, do not try and get re-elected for at least the standard wait time. try { Thread.sleep(electionWaitTime); } catch (InterruptedException e) {} } } else { // Not electable - wait a bit and check again. if (wasElectable) { log.info("Leadership NOT requested on election ({}) - node not electable",election); wasElectable = isElectable(); } try { Thread.sleep(electionWaitTime); } catch (InterruptedException e) {} } } } public void setElection(String election) { this.election = election; } @ManagedAttribute public String getElection() { return election; } public void setNamedCache(NamedCache nc) { this.cache = nc; }

    - by user2929005
    I am having I hope only two issues currently. I have had help on this on a previous question that I have asked but now I am running into different issues. My current issues now is that I need to print out into a JTextField a sorted array. I do not have questions about how to sort the array I just would like help on how to get the array to print to the JTextField when the Bubble Sort button is pressed. Currently when I press the button it freezes. It freezes at this line. list.add(Integer.valueOf(input.nextInt())); please help Thank you. import java.awt.EventQueue; import javax.swing.*; import java.awt.event.*; import java.util.*; public class Sorting { private JFrame frame; private JTextArea inputArea; private JTextField outputArea; ArrayList<Integer> list = new ArrayList<Integer>(); Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in); /** * Launch the application. */ public static void main(String[] args) { EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable() { public void run() { try { Sorting window = new Sorting(); window.frame.setVisible(true); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } }); } /** * Create the application. */ public Sorting() { initialize(); } /** * Initialize the contents of the frame. */ private void initialize() { frame = new JFrame(); frame.setBounds(100, 100, 450, 300); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frame.setTitle("Sorting"); frame.getContentPane().setLayout(null); JButton bubbleButton = new JButton("Bubble Sort"); bubbleButton.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent arg0) { list.add(Integer.valueOf(input.nextInt())); // for(int i = 0; i < list.size(); i++){ // // } } }); bubbleButton.setBounds(10, 211, 114, 23); frame.getContentPane().add(bubbleButton); JButton mergeButton = new JButton("Merge Sort"); mergeButton.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { } }); mergeButton.setBounds(305, 211, 114, 23); frame.getContentPane().add(mergeButton); JButton quickButton = new JButton("Quick Sort"); quickButton.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { } }); quickButton.setBounds(163, 211, 114, 23); frame.getContentPane().add(quickButton); inputArea = new JTextArea(); inputArea.setBounds(10, 36, 414, 51); frame.getContentPane().add(inputArea); outputArea = new JTextField(); outputArea.setEditable(false); outputArea.setBounds(10, 98, 414, 59); frame.getContentPane().add(outputArea); outputArea.setColumns(10); JLabel label = new JLabel("Please Enter 5 Numbers"); label.setHorizontalAlignment(SwingConstants.CENTER); label.setBounds(10, 11, 414, 14); frame.getContentPane().add(label); } }

  • Need a hand understanding this Java code please :-)

    - by Brian
    Hi all, Just wondering if anyone would be able to take a look at this code for implementing the quicksort algorithm and answer me a few questions, please :-) public class Run { /*************************************************************************** * Quicksort code from Sedgewick 7.1, 7.2. **************************************************************************/ public static void quicksort(double[] a) { //shuffle(a); // to guard against worst-case quicksort(a, 0, a.length - 1, 0); } static void quicksort(final double[] a, final int left, final int right, final int tdepth) { if (right <= left) return; final int i = partition(a, left, right); if ((tdepth < 4) && ((i - left) > 1000)) { final Thread t = new Thread() { public void run() { quicksort(a, left, i - 1, tdepth + 1); } }; t.start(); quicksort(a, i + 1, right, tdepth + 1); try { t.join(); } catch (InterruptedException e) { throw new RuntimeException("Cancelled", e); } } else { quicksort(a, left, i - 1, tdepth); quicksort(a, i + 1, right, tdepth); } } // partition a[left] to a[right], assumes left < right private static int partition(double[] a, int left, int right) { int i = left - 1; int j = right; while (true) { while (less(a[++i], a[right])) // find item on left to swap ; // a[right] acts as sentinel while (less(a[right], a[--j])) // find item on right to swap if (j == left) break; // don't go out-of-bounds if (i >= j) break; // check if pointers cross exch(a, i, j); // swap two elements into place } exch(a, i, right); // swap with partition element return i; } // is x < y ? private static boolean less(double x, double y) { return (x < y); } // exchange a[i] and a[j] private static void exch(double[] a, int i, int j) { double swap = a[i]; a[i] = a[j]; a[j] = swap; } // shuffle the array a[] private static void shuffle(double[] a) { int N = a.length; for (int i = 0; i < N; i++) { int r = i + (int) (Math.random() * (N - i)); // between i and N-1 exch(a, i, r); } } // test client public static void main(String[] args) { int N = 5000000; // Integer.parseInt(args[0]); // generate N random real numbers between 0 and 1 long start = System.currentTimeMillis(); double[] a = new double[N]; for (int i = 0; i < N; i++) a[i] = Math.random(); long stop = System.currentTimeMillis(); double elapsed = (stop - start) / 1000.0; System.out.println("Generating input: " + elapsed + " seconds"); // sort them start = System.currentTimeMillis(); quicksort(a); stop = System.currentTimeMillis(); elapsed = (stop - start) / 1000.0; System.out.println("Quicksort: " + elapsed + " seconds"); } } My questions are: What is the purpose of the variable tdepth? Is this considered a "proper" implementation of a parallel quicksort? I ask becuase it doesn't use implements Runnable or extends Thread... If it doesn't already, is it possible to modify this code to use multiple threads? By passing in the number of threads you want to use as a parameter, for example...? Many thanks, Brian

  • Problems with createImage(int width, int height)

    - by Jonathan
    I have the following code, which is run every 10ms as part of a game: private void gameRender() { if(dbImage == null) { //createImage() returns null if GraphicsEnvironment.isHeadless() //returns true. (java.awt.GraphicsEnvironment) dbImage = createImage(PWIDTH, PHEIGHT); if(dbImage == null) { System.out.println("dbImage is null"); //Error recieved return; } else dbg = dbImage.getGraphics(); } //clear the background dbg.setColor(Color.white); dbg.fillRect(0, 0, PWIDTH, PHEIGHT); //draw game elements... if(gameOver) { gameOverMessage(dbg); } } The problem is that it enters the if statement which checks for the Image being null, even after I attempt to define the image. I looked around, and it seems that createImage() will return null if GraphicsEnvironment.isHeadless() returns true. I don't understand exactly what the isHeadless() method's purpose is, but I thought it might have something to do with the compiler or IDE, so I tried on two, both of which get the same error (Eclipse, and BlueJ). Anyone have any idea what the source of the error is, and how I might fix it? Thanks in advance Jonathan ................................................................... EDIT: I am using java.awt.Component.createImage(int width, int height). The purpose of this method is to ensure the creation of, and edit an Image that will contain the view of the player of the game, that will later be drawn to the screen by means of a JPanel. Here is some more code if this helps at all: public class Sim2D extends JPanel implements Runnable { private static final int PWIDTH = 500; private static final int PHEIGHT = 400; private volatile boolean running = true; private volatile boolean gameOver = false; private Thread animator; //gameRender() private Graphics dbg; private Image dbImage = null; public Sim2D() { setBackground(Color.white); setPreferredSize(new Dimension(PWIDTH, PHEIGHT)); setFocusable(true); requestFocus(); //Sim2D now recieves key events readyForTermination(); addMouseListener( new MouseAdapter() { public void mousePressed(MouseEvent e) { testPress(e.getX(), e.getY()); } }); } //end of constructor private void testPress(int x, int y) { if(!gameOver) { gameOver = true; //end game at mousepress } } //end of testPress() private void readyForTermination() { addKeyListener( new KeyAdapter() { public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e) { int keyCode = e.getKeyCode(); if((keyCode == KeyEvent.VK_ESCAPE) || (keyCode == KeyEvent.VK_Q) || (keyCode == KeyEvent.VK_END) || ((keyCode == KeyEvent.VK_C) && e.isControlDown()) ) { running = false; //end process on above list of keypresses } } }); } //end of readyForTermination() public void addNotify() { super.addNotify(); //creates the peer startGame(); //start the thread } //end of addNotify() public void startGame() { if(animator == null || !running) { animator = new Thread(this); animator.start(); } } //end of startGame() //run method for world public void run() { while(running) { long beforeTime, timeDiff, sleepTime; beforeTime = System.nanoTime(); gameUpdate(); //updates objects in game (step event in game) gameRender(); //renders image paintScreen(); //paints rendered image to screen timeDiff = (System.nanoTime() - beforeTime) / 1000000; sleepTime = 10 - timeDiff; if(sleepTime <= 0) //if took longer than 10ms { sleepTime = 5; //sleep a bit anyways } try{ Thread.sleep(sleepTime); //sleep by allotted time (attempts to keep this loop to about 10ms) } catch(InterruptedException ex){} beforeTime = System.nanoTime(); } System.exit(0); } //end of run() private void gameRender() { if(dbImage == null) { dbImage = createImage(PWIDTH, PHEIGHT); if(dbImage == null) { System.out.println("dbImage is null"); return; } else dbg = dbImage.getGraphics(); } //clear the background dbg.setColor(Color.white); dbg.fillRect(0, 0, PWIDTH, PHEIGHT); //draw game elements... if(gameOver) { gameOverMessage(dbg); } } //end of gameRender() } //end of class Sim2D Hope this helps clear things up a bit, Jonathan

  • Java Thread execution on same data

    - by AR89
    first of all here is the code, you can just copy an paste import java.util.ArrayList; public class RepetionCounter implements Runnable{ private int x; private int y; private int[][] matrix; private int xCounter; private int yCounter; private ArrayList<Thread> threadArray; private int rowIndex; private boolean[] countCompleted; public RepetionCounter(int x, int y, int [][]matrix) { this.x = x; this.y = y; this.matrix = matrix; this.threadArray = new ArrayList<Thread>(matrix.length); this.rowIndex = 0; for(int i = 0; i < matrix.length; i++){ threadArray.add(new Thread(this)); } countCompleted = new boolean[matrix.length]; } public void start(){ for (int i = 0; i < threadArray.size(); i++){ threadArray.get(i).start(); this.rowIndex++; } } public void count(int rowIndex) { for(int i = 0; i < matrix[rowIndex].length; i++){ if (matrix[rowIndex][i] == x){ this.xCounter++; } else if (matrix[rowIndex][i] == y){ this.yCounter++; } } } @Override public void run() { count(this.rowIndex); countCompleted[this.rowIndex] = true; } public int getxCounter() { return xCounter; } public void setxCounter(int xCounter) { this.xCounter = xCounter; } public int getyCounter() { return yCounter; } public void setyCounter(int yCounter) { this.yCounter = yCounter; } public boolean[] getCountCompleted() { return countCompleted; } public void setCountCompleted(boolean[] countCompleted) { this.countCompleted = countCompleted; } public static void main(String args[]){ int[][] matrix = {{0,2,1}, {2,3,4}, {3,2,0}}; RepetionCounter rc = new RepetionCounter(0, 2, matrix); rc.start(); boolean ready = false; while(!ready){ for(int i = 0; i < matrix.length; i++){ if (rc.getCountCompleted()[i]){ ready = true; } else { ready = false; } } } if (rc.getxCounter() > rc.getyCounter()){ System.out.println("Thre are more x than y"); } else {System.out.println("There are:"+rc.getxCounter()+" x and:"+rc.getyCounter()+" y"); } } } What I want this code to do: I give to the object a matrix and tow numbers, and I want to know how much times these two numbers occurs in the matrix. I create as many thread as the number of rows of the matrix (that' why there is that ArrayList), so in this object I have k threads (supposing k is the number of rows), each of them count the occurrences of the two numbers. The problem is: if I run it for the first time everything work, but if I try to execute it another time I get and IndexOutOfBoundException, or a bad count of the occurrences, the odd thing is that if I get the error, and modify the code, after that it will works again just for once. Can you explain to me why is this happening?

  • Android - Resuming application state - SL4A

    - by toyotajon93
    please dont harpoon me for a noob-ish question. I am working on an android application using SL4A, when my application starts it runs in the background while the script is being executed. I'm not sure where to start but each time I click my icon, it re-starts my application. I have tried using different launchmodes with nothing different happening. I'm thinking it has to do with the OnCreate code, and the setting of the notification. I need help saving my application state and then resuming on either re-click of icon or click from notification bar. I've tried everything had to turn here for help. I am not a pro at android programming by any means. • Having trouble binding a ksoap object to an ArrayList in Android

    - by Maskau
    I'm working on an app that calls a web service, then the webservice returns an array list. My problem is I am having trouble getting the data into the ArrayList and then displaying in a ListView. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I know for a fact the web service returns an ArrayList. Everything seems to be working fine, just no data in the ListView or the ArrayList.....Thanks in advance! • How to handle screen orientation change when progress dialog and background thread active?

    - by Heikki Toivonen
    My program does some network activity in a background thread. Before starting, it pops up a progress dialog. The dialog is dismissed on the handler. This all works fine, except when screen orientation changes while the dialog is up (and the background thread is going). At this point the app either crashes, or deadlocks, or gets into a weird stage where the app does not work at all until all the threads have been killed. How can I handle the screen orientation change gracefully? The sample code below matches roughly what my real program does: public class MyAct extends Activity implements Runnable { public ProgressDialog mProgress; // UI has a button that when pressed calls send public void send() { mProgress = ProgressDialog.show(this, "Please wait", "Please wait", true, true); Thread thread = new Thread(this); thread.start(); } public void run() { Thread.sleep(10000); Message msg = new Message(); mHandler.sendMessage(msg); } private final Handler mHandler = new Handler() { @Override public void handleMessage(Message msg) { mProgress.dismiss(); } }; } Stack: E/WindowManager( 244): Activity MyAct has leaked window com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView@433b7150 that was originally added here E/WindowManager( 244): android.view.WindowLeaked: Activity MyAct has leaked window com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView@433b7150 that was originally added here E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewRoot.<init>(ViewRoot.java:178) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.addView(WindowManagerImpl.java:147) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.addView(WindowManagerImpl.java:90) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.Window$LocalWindowManager.addView(Window.java:393) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.Dialog.show(Dialog.java:212) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.ProgressDialog.show(ProgressDialog.java:103) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.ProgressDialog.show(ProgressDialog.java:91) E/WindowManager( 244): at MyAct.send(MyAct.java:294) E/WindowManager( 244): at MyAct$4.onClick(MyAct.java:174) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.View.performClick(View.java:2129) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.View.onTouchEvent(View.java:3543) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.widget.TextView.onTouchEvent(TextView.java:4664) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.View.dispatchTouchEvent(View.java:3198) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView.superDispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1593) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow.superDispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1089) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.Activity.dispatchTouchEvent(Activity.java:1871) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView.dispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1577) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewRoot.handleMessage(ViewRoot.java:1140) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:88) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:3739) E/WindowManager( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) E/WindowManager( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:515) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:739) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:497) E/WindowManager( 244): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) and: W/dalvikvm( 244): threadid=3: thread exiting with uncaught exception (group=0x4000fe68) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): Uncaught handler: thread main exiting due to uncaught exception E/AndroidRuntime( 244): java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: View not attached to window manager E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.findViewLocked(WindowManagerImpl.java:331) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.removeView(WindowManagerImpl.java:200) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.view.Window$LocalWindowManager.removeView(Window.java:401) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog.dismissDialog(Dialog.java:249) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog.access$000(Dialog.java:59) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog$1.run(Dialog.java:93) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog.dismiss(Dialog.java:233) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at MyAct$1.handleMessage(MyAct.java:321) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:88) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:3739) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:515) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:739) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:497) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) I/Process ( 46): Sending signal.   • [android] MediaRecorder prepare() causes segfault

    - by dwilde1
    Folks, I have a situation where my MediaRecorder instance causes a segfault. I'm working with a HTC Hero, Android 1.5+APIs. I've tried all variations, including 3gpp and H.263 and reducing the video resolution to 320x240. What am I missing? The state machine causes 4 MediaPlayer beeps and then turns on the video camera. Here's the pertinent source: UPDATE: ADDING SURFACE CREATE INFO I have rebooted the device based on previous answer to similar question. UPDATE 2: I seem to be following the MediaRecorder state machine perfectly, and if I trap out the MR code, the blank surface displays perfectly and everything else functions perfectly. I can record videos manually and play back via MediaPlayer in my code, so there should be nothing wrong with the underlying code. I've copied sample code on the surface and surfaceHolder code. I've looked at the MR instance in the Debug perspective in Eclipse and see that all (known) variables seem to be instantiated correctly. The setter calls are all now implemented in the exaxct order specced in the state diagram. // in activity class definition protected MediaPlayer mPlayer; protected MediaRecorder mRecorder; protected boolean inCapture = false; protected int phaseCapture = 0; protected int durCapturePhase = INF; protected SurfaceView surface; protected SurfaceHolder surfaceHolder; // in onCreate() // panelPreview is an empty LinearLayout surface = new SurfaceView(getApplicationContext()); surfaceHolder = surface.getHolder(); surfaceHolder.setType(SurfaceHolder.SURFACE_TYPE_PUSH_BUFFERS); panelPreview.addView(surface); // in timer handler runnable if (mRecorder == null) mRecorder = new MediaRecorder(); mRecorder.setAudioSource(MediaRecorder.AudioSource.MIC); mRecorder.setVideoSource(MediaRecorder.VideoSource.CAMERA); mRecorder.setOutputFormat(MediaRecorder.OutputFormat.THREE_GPP); mRecorder.setAudioEncoder(MediaRecorder.AudioEncoder.AMR_NB); mRecorder.setOutputFile(path + "/" + vlip); mRecorder.setVideoSize(320, 240); mRecorder.setVideoFrameRate(15); mRecorder.setPreviewDisplay(surfaceHolder.getSurface()); panelPreview.setVisibility(LinearLayout.VISIBLE); mRecorder.prepare(); mRecorder.start(); Here is a complete log trace for the process run and crash: I/ActivityManager( 80): Start proc com.ejf.convince.jenplus for activity com.ejf.convince.jenplus/.JenPLUS: pid=17738 uid=10075 gids={1006, 3003} I/jdwp (17738): received file descriptor 10 from ADB W/System.err(17738): Can't dispatch DDM chunk 46454154: no handler defined W/System.err(17738): Can't dispatch DDM chunk 4d505251: no handler defined I/WindowManager( 80): Screen status=true, current orientation=-1, SensorEnabled=false I/WindowManager( 80): needSensorRunningLp, mCurrentAppOrientation =-1 I/WindowManager( 80): Enabling listeners W/ActivityThread(17738): Application com.ejf.convince.jenplus is waiting for the debugger on port 8100...
