How to Access Boot Options 12.04 Live USB

I'm attempting to install 12.04 on my computer but booting from my USB drive results in a blank screen. This has happened since 10.04 and has always been fixed by putting nomodeset in the boot command, but now I can't access the boot options with F6 for some reason. How can I access the boot options? I booted into the live image on a different computer and it worked fine. I'm sure it's because of my Nvidia graphics. When I boot into the live image it shows a small gray box in the lower left corner of the screen and that's it. I can't edit the boot options or do anything else. Thanks in advance.

Multiple Document Interfaces in Visual Basic

What is Multiple Document Interface (MDI)? In most VB.NET applications, it is using a single document interface (SDI). In this type of interface, every window is unique to aother window. But in multiple document interface, it works by having one parent window with child windows under it. How can I modify the knetworkmanager icon in my kde taskbar?

I am using kubuntu 12.04 Precise 64 on my notebook. Almost everything works fine. I would like to modify the colors of the icon(s) used by knetworkmanager to indicate wifi online. Right now, I am using the (default?) Oxygen theme. What I want is to make the online icons some color other than gray - probably black, so the contrast is greater and they're easier for me to see (I use reading glasses.) I found an old article on how to do this, but when I added the icons it mentioned, they were ignored. Where are these icons stored? Can I just edit them with something like gimp to change the colors, etc.? TIA

Where is Nautilus icon file located and how is it chosen?

When I plug my Garmin Nuvi 265 GPS device into my computer via a USB cable, it mounts as a drive with a blue triangle icon instead of the default gray hard drive icon. HOW does Nautilus know how to do this? After much laborious searching, I found that the icon info is stored in ~/.gconf/apps/nautilus/desktop-metadata/GARMIN@46@volume/gconf.xml -- but only when a custom icon is selected. So Where is this blue icon file? Why does Nautilus use it instead of the plain drive icon? Is there a way to have give each of my drives a custom icon -- so that when I stick in my various flash drives, they have a distinctive icon (i.e. a 'favicon.ico' file on root or such?) Using Gnome 2.30.2 on Ubuntu 10.04.

How do I prevent a KActor from changing the orientation of its Z-Axis?

So I have an object that inherits from KActor that I would like to behave as a dynamic physics object, but I want its Z-Axis to remain upright, but very stiffly. I've tried the bStayUpright that triggers the "Stay Upright Spring". The problem is, it's a spring, and the object in question oscillates into position when I want it to remain oriented properly without wobbling. In the image above, the yellow block has fallen onto the gray box, and it is currently pivoting about the contact point as it tries to right itself. Should I be tweaking the StayUprightMaxTorque and StayUprightTorqueFactor parameters, or should I be using a Constraint of some sort?

Problems after distribution update

I have Ubuntu 11.10. Yesterday I make some distribution updates with Update Manager. And now I can't start my Ubuntu. Video related: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn2MT9h2muQ (you need 25th sec) 1. How can I change my "Desktop bar"?

The problem: In Gnome 3.4 when I click the main menu, it's white. The text of the menu is also white. Original text: I have a problem. When I installed the new version of Gnome (3.4) the "Desktop bar" (I'm sorry, I don't know what's the real name of that bar, but is the bar on the top on Ubuntu 11.10) every time I click on the username icon, or the battery, etc., the menu comes on gray or white and the letters are white. I know maybe this is a stupid question but it annoys me. Besides, my username doest not appear on the login screen. I tried to reset my settings, I delete gnome, and check the Unsettings and CompizConfig but the problem is still there. Maybe I miss something on the process of looking on any configuration tool but I don't think so... Sorry if the question is something basic or even stupid but I'm new on Ubuntu and I'm experimenting whit it.

krunner unreadable black text on black background. File a bug? Where?

I'm running Kubuntu 12.04 beta2 (up to date). Already tried to create a user from the scratch but the problem can still be replicated. I'll make it simple: with any of the available themes (air, air 4 netbooks, oxygen) whenever I disable desktop effects, KRunner instantly becomes black (with black fonts) rendering itself useless because of its unreadable text. Here is a screenshot I took: http://i42.tinypic.com/348sz7n.jpg The weird thing is that with effects enabled KRunner is "light gray" and perfectly functional. What can I do? Should I file a bug? If yes: where? On the KDE bug tracker or the Kubuntu one? Thanks in advance!

Theme changes after resuming from suspend

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1520 and Ubuntu 10.10. I've read a lot of questions about graphics problems after resuming from suspend, but most of them are much more serious than mine. I can boot, login and use Ubuntu fine. The problem is that my theme for my top bar and bottom bar changes to gray and blocky (not rounded). Oddly enough, the theme for the title bars of my windows stay the same dark theme. Any ideas how I can fix this? It works fine if I logout and log back in.

Dell Inspiron 1210 mini Blank Screen on boot 12.04

Dell Inspiron 1210 mini Blank Screen on boot 12.04 If I mash buttons I get to a gray screen then the login screen and into the desktop but normally I turn on the laptop and I see a black screen with a cursor then a purple screen then it just goes black. I can hit ctrl alt F1 or F2 and get a prompt. I've tried using the poulsbo ppa driver script fix but that doesn't work. I don't knwo what to do now. I have the OS installed and when I did get into the OS by mashing buttons I installed updates and wireless adapter drivers. It works but if I reboot I jsut get to the black screen and have no idea what to do. What needs to be done so that I can just boot up and see the login screen!?

Many ui panels needs interaction with same object

I am developing a tool for simulating systems like the Gray-Scott model (That is systems where spatial distribution depends on time). The actual model is loaded from a DLL or shared object and the simulation is performed by a Simulation object. There are at least two situations when the simulation needs to be destroyed: The user loads a new model The user changes the size of the domain To make sure nothing goes wrong, the current Model, Simulation, and rendering Thread are all managed by an ApplicationState object. But the two cases above are initiated from two different UI objects. Is it then ok to distribute a reference to the ApplicationState object to all panels that need to access at least one method on the ApplicationState object? Another solution would be to use aggregation so that the panel from which the user chooses model knows the simulation parameter panel. Also, the ApplicationState class seems somewhat clumsy, so I would like to have something else

I have recently discovered a website that is a must have for any developer who has struggled with picking the colors for their web site: http://colorschemedesigner.com/ You get several choices to determine how to specify the colors. This option brings in a complimentary color in various shades along with the main color that you select on the color wheel. You also have the option of specifying various adjustments to the schema. You can make it pastel, more contrast, less contrast, gray tones, etc. You can also view a preview page as a light page or a dark page to see how the colors might be applied. Once you have everything the way you want it, you can switch over to the final tab and get the color list. Now none of us have an excuse for questionable color combinations.

The Setup should be at the end the following: Cable Modem (one IP adress) | [Ethernet] Sophos UTM (running as VM [VMWare Fusion 5] on the MacMini) | [WIFI] Airport Express v2 (for sharing Local Network to wireless and wired clients) 1)| [WIFI] 2)| [Ethernet over Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter]* Clients MacMini (Local File Server) *To have the Mini also protected behind the UTM So the setup process for the UTM works fine, but then the problems start: I just have one external IP (from my cable modem provider)== So if I put the VM in briged mode my Internet connection drops, because the MacMini also has its IP adress. If I put the VM to NAT mode the Mini itself is not protected by the UTM So: is there a way to hide the en0 interface(Ethernet) and the en1 interface (Wifi) from the MacMini, so that they not even appear in System Preferences Network section but are available to the VM? That way the Mini must connect to the en2 interface (Thunderbolt adapter) to make any Internet/LAN connection and I just use the given single IP from the Cable Modem. Thaks for any suggestions... SQL SERVER – Activity Monitor and Performance Issue

We had wonderful SQLAuthority News – Community Tech Days – December 11, 2010 event yesterday. After the event, we had meeting among Jacob Sebastian, Vinod Kumar, Rushabh Mehta and myself. We all were sharing our experience about performance tuning consultations. During the conversation, Jacob has shared wonderful story of his recent observation. The story is very small but the moral of the story is very important. The story is about a client, who had continuously performance issues. Client used Activity Monitor (Read More: SQL SERVER – 2008 – Location of Activity Monitor – Where is SQL Serve Activity Monitor Located) to check the performance issues. The pattern of the performance issues was very much common all the time. Every time, after a while the computer stopped responding. After doing in-depth performance analysis, Jacob realized that client once opened activity monitor never closed it. The same activity monitor itself is very expensive process. The tool, which helped to debug the performance issues, also helped (negatively) to bring down the server. After closing the activity monitor which was open for long time, the server did not have performance issues. Moral of the story: Activity Monitor is great tool but use it with care and close it when not needed.
