• No boot option after installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on Acer Aspire 4736z with Live CD

  I am facing a problem. After installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS using Live CD, at the reboot there is no boot option to choose the OS. I directly get logged into my Windows 7. Before that i was having an issue with the 'nomodeset' if not mistaken .After ticking [x] on the nomodeset, i can install my Ubuntu, but got stucked again at choosing the partition option. So i did 2 partitions for Ubuntu, 1 partition as ext3 for / and the other 1 for swap. Which enabled to proceed until the finished installation dialogue, and after that system wants to reboot .It takes some time and gets stuck at the screen doing nothing, doesn't reboot at all. I did forced shutdown then rebooted again which directly logs me in windows 7 without boot option. In win7 the partitions for Ubuntu is gone. I tried the boot-repair thing and it doesn't help .It just shows up the _ Blank Cursor (terminal thing i guess). I typed boot repair but still the same result. I am using Acer Aspire 4736z. Please somebody help me with this issue.

  I am trying to register a COM DLL using Inno Setup in a setup package I created. During test installations on Vista, I get this error: Unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0xC0000005 I click "Ignore" and my application appears to install, but I have to then open a command prompt (as an administrator) and then regsvr32 to install the COM DLL. Is there any way to do this automatically in Inno Setup?

• What is the replacement of the floppy

  While CD (and to an lesser extend DVD) disks have reached the price-point of the floppy, they have one significant downside, it is WORM (Write-Once Read-Many) media, allowing it to be used only one single time, and you need to be explicit in writing the data to the actual media (you need to burn it.) While CD-RW solves the "use only once" problem, it is still EWORM (Erasable Write-Once Read-Many) media, which still means you need to be explicit in writing the data to the actual media (you still need to burn it.), and also, you still need to be very explicit in erasing it. (simple delete is not possible.) Okay, we can use a CD-RW in Packet Writing mode, however the downside to that, is that this mode is not very universal, and also, not the native mode of the media. Now, while USB-sticks and SD-cards may not have the poblems of the CD, they have a whole other kind of problem: their PRICE! USB-sticks and SD cards are generally 10 to 100 times as expensive as diskettes per piece. SD-cards, in addition have an added problem, because they need a reader to operate. While it is a very standard thing, it is not default equipment on the computer like the CD drive or USB port (or historically the diskette drive). You wouldn't give out an USB stick or SD card with a 100 kB text file, not caring weither you would get it back or not. So, to recap: CD & DVD are basically WORM media. SD cards and USB sticks are relatively expensive. SD cards also needs special readers. Diskettes have a very low data-rate Diskettes have a very low storage capacity. Now, is there a media out there that solves all these problems, or is there a way to get (very) small USB sticks or SD cards for a very low price (as they're the closest thing to diskette).

• wine 1.4 regedit makes screen flicker on 12.04 with dual monitor setup

  I have a dualmonitor setup running dual 23" on 1920x1080 which has the following problem: When running any wine application (for example "wine regedit" from console) the screen flickers and the windows have artifacts like this: Also sometimes taking a screenshot using the print key will make compiz crash (starter and all window bars/menus are gone) when an wine application is started. I don't have the same problems on my notebook which has the same setup. Only difference is the notebook has ATI Graphics and this PC has nvidia. My setup: DNS - done (A records PTR are ok) Mail Setup - done Webmail - done Also there seems to be a naming problem. They all come from [email protected] instead of [email protected]. I must be missing an alias somewhere. I've read an entire book on setting this up so don't throw stones :) The GUI is masking a lot of this up for me, so explanations via GUI is appreciated.

• DVD ROM is not working

  (note: I don't know in which StackExchange site to put this question, I'll thank the moderator that will move it to a more appropriate place, if there is a S.E. available for my question). I have a DVD RW drive that is well listed in the bios, and if no CD is in, it is also present in the "My Computer" of my Fedora 16. But when I put a disc on it, the icon disapear from "My Computer", and I can not do anything with this ! (Like erasing a RW disc). I'd like to boot a Fedora 17 Live CD image. I burned it on an other computer but when I try to run it in bios, nothing is done and I'm redirected to Grub of my HD. I'm not too particular about the language or framework a long as there are minimal dependencies and they are easily installable cross-platform, or already exist. A command-line application would also work.. Looking to target WinXP, Vista, Win7, OS X Leopard & Snow Leopard, & most linux distros. I know I can write an .iso cross platform, but I'm looking for a way to burn those .ISOs to disk on a variety of platforms without having to code seperately for each one. It's for burning MP3 disks and standard audio CDs... All suggestions appreciated.

• Building a custom Linux Live CD

  Can anyone point me to a good tutorial on creating a bootable Linux CD from scratch? I need help with a fairly specialized problem: my firm sells an expansion card that requires custom firmware. Currently we use an extremely old live CD image of RH7.2 that we update with current firmware. Manufacturing puts the cards in a machine, boots off the CD, the CD writes the firmware, they power off and pull the cards. Because of this cycle, it's essential that the CD boot and shut down as quickly as possible. The problem is that with the next generation of cards, I have to update the CD to a 2.6 kernel. It's easy enough to acquire a pre-existing live CD - but those all are designed for showing off Linux on the desktop - which means they take forever to boot. Can anyone fix me up with a current How-To? Update: So, just as a final update for anyone reading this later - the tool I ended up using was "livecd-creator". My reason for choosing this tool was that it is available for RedHat-based distributions like CentOs, Fedora and RHEL - which are all distributions that my company supports already. In addition, while the project is very poorly documented it is extremely customizable. I was able to create a minimal LiveCD and edit the boot sequence so that it booted directly into the firmware updater instead of a bash shell. The whole job would have only taken an hour or two if there had been a README explaining the configuration file!

• Gparted resize of an extended partition fails with error "can't have overlapping partitions".

  I just decided to install Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 on my Dell laptop. However I didn't do this manually but instead used the "Install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7" option during the installation. Now the partition that Ubuntu runs in has very little space and I am getting warning messages. I'm trying to use gparted 0.12.1-5 (via a live CD) to give Windows less space and give Ubuntu more. I've managed to remove 100GB from the Windows partition so I now have some unallocated space between Windows and Ubuntu. This is what it looks like inside Ubuntu (not using the live CD, since it won't let me mount a USB to save a screenshot): So first I take sda4 (extended?) and resize it to the left so it takes up all the unallocated space. Then I resize sda5 (ext4) as well so it takes up all the new space. However, when I hit apply, it fails on the first action (resizing sd4) with the error message can't have overlapping partitions. Any ideas as to why this happens? I also tried resizing sda4 by just a few MB so that it definitely didn't overlap anything, but I still got the same error message. To clarify, I am using gparted from the LiveCD, I just took the screenshot from Ubuntu. I couldn't attach the details file containing the error information from gparted because I can't mount a USB drive when I'm running from the LiveCD. I'm tried following the guide on the gparted website but it says Invalid argument or something like that. If the gparted details are needed, I may need some hints on how to solve the USB issue as well. :)

• DVDs and CDs not recognized

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed on my computer (Sony Vaio VGN-NS205N). It reads some CDs and DVDs just fine, but many others it will not recognize at all, or will only recognize after opening and closing the CD tray many times. It just shows the cd/dvd drive as being empty and won't show that anything is on there at all. I have a few DVDs (from the same publisher) that work every time. This comes up most often when trying to show my kid Bob the Builder, etc. Some data CDs I would like to work with also have the same issue. It's not a hardware or defective disc problem, since all these will play in Windows on the same machine. It's just really annoying to have to switch operating systems to play videos or get data off discs. All the searches I have done people recommend installing medibuntu and other repositories. I have and they are all up to date. No change. Any help that works would be greatly appreciated.

• Install Lubuntu w/o Disc or Flash Drive?

  My WinXP desktop was recently blasted with a few bits of malware. I removed the malware but the damage is done, and my OS is finally at its end; it's barely chugging along as it is. So, I'm figuring what I'd like to do is replace the OS with Lubuntu, which I know is a lightweight, heavily WinXP-esque distro of Linux. However, every article, every explanation, I've read online has stated I need either a 4+ GiB flash drive or a burnable CD. Well, I have a flash drive, but it's only 1 GiB; and I have a disc burner, but no disc. So, frankly, I doubt I'll be able to do it. But hey, I figured I might as well ask away here on AU; what have I got to lose? So my question is this: would it be possible to replace my WinXP OS w/ Lubuntu without using either a 4+ GiB flash drive or a burnable CD? Thanks very much. I appreciate any help you could give.

• Help trying/downloading ubuntu

  I can't try ubuntu. Every time i put in my disk and press try, it shows the ubuntu sign with the dots under it than it shows a command screen basically blinking saying that it closed and canceled applications belonging to ubuntu... Than I tried to download it from the disk... same thing. Than, because I have windows, I tried to download it from the website and it worked. I rebooted my computer and went into the Ubuntu option just to find a blinking command screen again... How do I get ubuntu to work? What does happen (with the command screen) is that it shows commands that are blinking to fast for me to read the whole thing, and then it stops after like a minute or two of blinking. The only thing I do get to read is that Ubuntu commanded some applications to shut down. In the CD one it only has like 5 error messages, and when I reboot and select Ubuntu, there are over a hundred error messages. With the live-cd I have to shut down my computer to use it again. With the reboot and clicking ubuntu option it reboots by itself. I expect it to actually start up with no error messages. UPDATE I've been trying to start Ubuntu for the last couple of days, and I noticed on my last try that it said "SIGNAL 15 RECEIVED"... • DVD not detected?

  As i insert a DVD in my drive (on a laptop) using Kubuntu 12.04, the DVD is not detected. The drive takes the DVD, I can hear it munching on it for a while, and then nothing. Even ejecting the DVD becomes a hassle, I need to do that at boot time otherwise the OS won't allow me to eject. Kubuntu 12.04 used to read and mount the same DVDs just fine a week ago. Edit: since I am able to boot from CD, can I safely assume the issue is not a hardware issue? • Setup Remote Access in Windows Home Server

  One of the many awesome features of Windows Home Server, is the ability to access your server and other computers on your network remotely. Today we show you the steps to enable Remote Access to your home server from anywhere you have an Internet connection. Remote Access in Windows Home Server has a lot of great features like uploading and downloading files from shared folders, accessing files from machines on your network, and controling machines remotely (on supported OS versions). Here we take a look at the basics of setting it up, choosing a domain name, and verifying you can connect remotely. Setup Remote Access in Windows Home Server Open the Windows Home Server Console and click on Settings. Next select Remote Access, it is off by default, just click the button to turn it on. Wait while your router is configured for remote access, when it’s complete click Next. Notice that it will enable UPnP, if you don’t wish to have that enabled, you can manually forward the correct ports. If you have any problems with the router being automatically configured, we’ll be taking a look at a more detailed troubleshooting guide in the future. The router is successfully configured, and we can continue to the next process of configuring our domain name. The Domain Name Setup Wizard will start. Notice you will need a Windows Live ID to set it up –which is typically your hotmail address. If you don’t already have one, you can get one here. Type in your Live ID email address and password and click Next… Agree to the Home Server Privacy Statement and the Live Custom Domains Addendum. If you’re concerned about privacy and want to learn more about the domain addendum, make sure to read about it before agreeing. There is nothing abnormal to point out about either statement, but if this is your first time setting it up, it’s good to review the information.   Now choose a name for the domain. You should select something that is easy to remember and identifies your home server. The name can contain up to 63 characters, numbers, letters, and hyphens…and must begin and end with a letter or number. When you have the name figured out click the Confirm button. Note: You can only register one domain name per Live ID. If the name isn’t already taken, you’ll get a confirmation message indicating it’s god to go. The wizard is complete and you can now access the home server from the URL provided. A few other things to point out after you’ve set it up…under Domain Name click on the Details button… Which pulls up the domain detail information and you can refresh the data to verify everything is working correctly. Or you can click the Configure button and then change or release your current domain name. Under Web site settings, you can change you site page headline to whatever you want it to be. Accessing Home Server Remotely After you’ve gotten everything setup for your home server domain, you can begin to access it when you’re away from home. Simply type in the domain address you created in the previous steps. The start page is rather boring…and to start accessing your data, click the Log On button in the upper right hand corner. Then enter in your home server credentials to gain access to your files, folders, and network computers. You won’t be able to log in with your administrator user account however, to protect security of your network. Once you’re logged in, you’ll be able to access different parts of your home server shares and network computers. Conclusion Now that you have Remote Access setup, you should be able to access and manage your files easily. Being able to access data from your home server remotely is great when you need to get certain files while on the road. The web UI is pretty self explanatory, works best in IE as ActiveX is required, and is smooth and easy to work with. • Setup Custom Portal & Content Enabled Domain

  When overlooking the past year we have seen a large increase in deployments where only some parts of the WebCenter Suite infrastructure has been used. The most common from my personal perspective is a domain topology that includes: WebCenter Custom Portal, WebCenter Content and Oracle HTTP ServicesToday its very common to see installation where the whole suite is installed when the use case only requires the custom portal and some sub component like WebCenter Content. This post will go into detail on how to minimize the deployment time and effort by only laying down the necessary managed servers needed, by following this proposed method you will minimize the configuration steps and only install the required components and schema's, configure only the necessary components and minimize the impact of architectural changes through reduced dependencies. • Advice for good web server development setup.

  A month or so ago I created my first LAMP stack and implemented a simple web site that exercised each letter in that acronym. However my development setup was much less than ideal. I don't really have a local test server, but instead I was writing all of my CGI scripts in vim while ssh'ed into the remote machine as root. Now I intend to start more serious development. Question: What is a good setup so that development goes as easily as possible? I would like to understand what is available to me along the lines of an IDE, subversion (or alternatives), uploading and downloading content, and just best practices. I'm pretty new at all of this. Also, feel free to point me at good websites. There's plenty of websites, but only people who are already heavily developing web content are able to quickly determine if they are good websites.

• Mythbuntu initial setup cannt connect to server

  I'm really new to linux, and I just installed mythbuntu to a standalone pc, it's all installed ok and I've logged on, and started the setup but I'm having issues. I select language ok, the next screen is database setup, select next but it says can't connect to server and I just loop back. I've done some googling and checked the mysql database password and that is correct, I've also checked that my username belongs to myth tv and it does. Can anyone help? I've tried reinstalling but it doesn't change. Many thanks.
