• Getting "Unable to find a medium containing a live file system" when installing 10.10

  I got this error while trying to install ubuntu 10.10 from a bootable USB stick on to Sony Vaio P series laptop. The disk boots into the language and installation type screen. After that it goes through the splash and pulls up this error: BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-ubuntu11) built in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system After getting this error the installation fails to start. I have used the same USB stick on some other laptops and the installation started as usual. Any help will be appreciated. My installation is i386 and my machine is Vaio P VGN-P610. I've tried every possible thing: Bios: [enable boot external] Boot order: [external] [hard drive] [network boot] Tried 2 different USB drives Tried 2 different external CD drives Tried 6 different downloads of both the desktop and netbook remix. All downloads were checked with MD5SUM. Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 installs properly in every version and from every source. Getting reaaaally frustrated.

• Not able to connect to internet in RHEL 5

  I just installed red hat enterprise 5 in my laptop and on desktop both. In desktop it is working fine but in laptop it is not showing the eth device. (I tried ifconfig only lo is there). I tried ifup eth0 still nothing happened. The network service in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and in /etc/sysconfig/network are enable. I had ubuntu in my laptop before and I faced same problem with that too. Is there any problem with my laptop? I have my system on dual boot and in win7 networking is running fine. I am not able to connect to the internet only, other devices are working fine. System conf: Sony vaio E series. 3 GB RAM, intel core i3 2.13 GHZ.

• Slow Internet connection

  My internet connectivity from my Laptop slowed down overnight. I have no clue as what had happened. I was able to download at 300kbps the day before yesterday. And from yesterday on, my internet has been slow. My download speed is at 25kbps. Can someone help me to resolve this issue? I am using wireless connection on my Sony Vaio. • Windows 8 sleep, blank screen on resume

  I use a SONY VAIO laptop VPCS116FA that came pre-installed with Windows 7. I have upgraded to Windows 8. The experience has been good so far but I am facing a frustrating problem. Whenever, I put my computer to sleep, it won't wake up and I have to restart it. Note that this does not affect hibernation which works perfectly fine. However, it is not a perfect alternative to sleep option. • Upgrade to 0.25, files served to uPNP devices cannot play

  I have a Sony BDP-S390 bluray & network player. I upgraded my Myth server to 0.25. When I browse to the Myth server, and try to play a recording, I get an error message about the file not being payable in the player. Interestingly, the files that i have recorded, and the videos that I have loaded into my Video volume group are .mpg or .mp4. The player shows the filetype that it thinks the file is in it's list, and it claims that these files are AVI files, however none of them are. They are all .mp4 or .mpg files. Thinking that that was just an optical illusion, I went ahead and tried to play a file, but I get an error about the file not being playable. First of all, is there something that I need to do to make the uPNP server know about different filetypes? Is it reporting AVI because it hasn't been told about MPG or MP4? Second, I'd like to help out some more here and collect some logging about the uPNP server in the myth server. I cant seem to find information on how to turn on logging, and there is no mythbackend settings file int /etc/default. Thanks very much.

• Ubuntu 10.04 User Interface errors

  Hi Guys Using Ubuntu 10.04 Beta on a Sony Vaio laptop (slightly old PCG-4n7M). It was working wonderfully until this morning. After updating and upgrading the login screen images gave broken image icons, then on logging in UI was replaced with just the cmd shell. All menus are gone. I have tried to reconfigure xserver-xorg and that doesn't work. Reinstalling doesn't either. I have tried a number of other attempts. What is weird is that I can launch graphical applications from the cmd line. such as firefox or google-chrome. and they work but the UI is simplified or broken (no resizing, closing, minimizing). I am a bit lost on how to fix this error. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know

• Hybrid Graphics on Ubuntu 12.04 switching to discrete

  I have a Sony Vaio VPCCB-27FX with hybrid graphics. Using vgaswitcheroo enables me to switch my discrete card off to save power. Now when i want to switch to the discrete card for performance, my system freezes. • Unable to copy and paste (or cut and paste) photos already reduced in size from Word document into a

  Hello I cannot copy photos and paste them from a word document into the text of an email on my Sony Laptop having already substantially redcued the size of the photos using Microsoft Office Picture Manager. I can readily manage to perform this functjon from my work place PC but am presently working mostly from home. I am trying to email photos and text using a btinternet.com email address but have checked that I cannot perform the task using my alternate googlemail email address either. I can obviously highlight the relevant photographs but whenever I try to copy or cut them into the email text the paste function is disabled. Assistance would be much appreciated. Kind regards Simon

• Logitech Revue - tv picture extends too far off left/right side of tv?

  Hi, I got a logitech revue (for google tv). I hooked it up, works ok, but the picture is not fitting horizontally in my hdtv. The hdtv is a Sony Bravia, 2010 model. The tv picture is fitting vertically just fine, but it looks like the left and right ends of the picture extend way off farther than they should be. In other words, it looks like the picture is starting about 4 inches to the left of the left side of the tv, and extends 4 inches past the right edge of the tv. I know in menu - settings you have an option to "maximize" your picture, which works for the vertical directions, but the horizontal directions seem convinced that they're maximized properly and I cannot adjust. Any help here? Thanks

• Second Monitor Detected, but not receiving a signal after upgrading to 12.04

  After I upgraded to 12.04, my second monitor is detected (in display settings), but will not power on. I have scoured the Internet and forums for a solution and I can't find anything. I have found a couple people with the same problem, but never a solution for it. I am no expert, but I'm certainly not a noob. My computer uses AMD Radeon 6250 graphics, but I do NOT want to use the proprietary graphics drivers. They refuse to work properly with my second monitor (they ATI drivers will only mirror screens, and I've done everything to try to fix it, and I DON't want mirrored screens) Not to mention that the default open-source video drivers seem to work much better than the proprietary anyway! Again, Ubuntu's default video drivers work fine, and they even DETECT the second monitor (Dell 19'). I can drag stuff off the screen and put it on the 'space' of the second monitor and even a screen-shot shows that there are two monitors active; but the monitor is OFF. It will not power on. It goes into 'power-save' mode because it is not receiving a signal. For some reason it is not getting the signal to power on, even though Ubuntu thinks the monitor is working properly. I had this working fine on my Sony VAIO yesterday (with Radeon graphics/default Ubuntu video drivers). I upgraded to a Samsung Series 3 and now I have this issue. I can't for the life of me figure out why the monitor is connected, detected and I have screen space for the monitor, but the screen won't turn on! • Ubuntu 9.10 freezes when HDMI port is connected

  Hi, I have a Sony Vaio FW350 with a HDMI output. I'm trying to use it under Ubuntu 9.10 with a LG LCD monitor 21,5'. I've tried two approaches: Boot the laptop with the HDMI cable connected and monitor turned on. Result: LCD Monitor keeps turned on but the whole screen is black and Ubuntu do not seem to be initializing. Boot Ubuntu until the end. I then connect the HDMI cable into the Laptop. The mouse and the whole system freezes. In both cases the only way to turn off the laptop is holding the power button. I've looked around the internet for similar problems, but only found workarounds for the same problem with VGA input, not HDMI. I also tried to use metacity before connecting the cable, but still got the same result. Any hints?

• Dual Booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. Partition Sizes?

  I'm about to reinstall Windows, so I thought that I'd try Ubuntu out on a partition just for fun. My question is, how large should my partitions be for each of them? I know this various depending on what you use, so i'll give you a general idea of what I have, and what I have in mind. I'm currently running: Windows 7 Professional (64bit) RAM: 4GB CPU: 2.5Ghz Quad Core processor HDD: 500GB GPU: 1GB Nvidia GeForce I have around 130GB in Steam games, and some heavier applications like Photoshop CS6, Sony Vegas Pro 11. But other Applications I use are: Chrome Skype Dxtory Fraps OpenOffice BitTorrent and other assorted smaller programs. So, I was thinking that I would give my Windows partition about 150-200GB, my Ubuntu Partition around 20GB, and the rest to shared storage. I'm not really sure if I'd need more or less on Ubuntu, because I've never used it and I'm not really sure what kind of apps i'd be using over there. This would also be a clean install, so I'd be wiping my HDD, creating the Partitions in GParted, then installing Windows with Ubuntu following that. Any critique you could give me? Maybe explanations to what the /root, /boot and /home partitions I hear are about? Thanks in advanced if you actually read this lengthy thing! Any help is appreciated. (x

• Brightness going up to 100% on loading certain websites in Chrome

  I'm using Google Chrome version 21.0.1180.89 on Ubuntu 12.04 and my laptop is a Sony VAIO VPCCW15FL (spec sheet). My video driver is the propietary "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (post-release updates)(version-current updates)". After installing Ubuntu, I discovered that neither the brightness control buttons (hardware) or the brightness slider (software) worked, and found out I could get the hardware buttons to work by installing the nvidiabl.deb package and oBacklight script. I'm using nvidiabl-dkms 0.77 and oBacklight 0.3.8. Still, the slider on the Ubuntu "Settings" does not work, but I don't care. There is an annoying thing happening when loading certain pages in Google Chrome: the brightness goes up to 100% when loading the webpage or when leaving it (closing the tab or typing a different URL on the omnibox). However, the "brightness tooltip" (that default brightness notification) remembers the position it was set to, so if I adjust the brightness with the HW buttons, the level gets adjusted relative to the value it was set to before "going 100%". I disabled the flash PPAPI plugin, but left the NPAPI plugin enabled, and the problem went away for pages with flash content. Still, the same thing happens when viewing HTML5 video, or when loading, for example, the Chrome Web Store or using the Scratchpad extension. I suppose it has to do with the rendering of certain elements using the GPU, but this is just a guess. This brightness thing does not happen when using Firefox 15.0 or any other application I have used yet. Does anybody know why this may be happening and what could I do to fix this without changing browser? Thanks a lot.

• Static noise coming from my laptop

  Replaced motherboard; speakers; put in an additional fan; but this did not stop the static noise. This was done by inhouse tech. support from Sony. If i turn my speakers mute; the sound is still there! Can't hear it through headphones. I was told it is feedback noise! Now I'm suppose to send my $2,000.00 computer through the mail to get fixed? I'm terrified it'll come back in terrible condition during the travel time? Help?

• Why does my mic boost automatically go to 100 on every boot?

  When my computer turns on, it automatically sets the "mic boost" sound setting to 100. This causes a loud static sound in my speakers. I can manually go to alsamixer and turn the mic boost down manually, but I would prefer it if I didn't have to do this every time I turn the computer on. I've tried running sudo alsactl store after fixing the settings, and this does save them, but I have to run sudo alsactl restore to restore the settings. This means that I have to manually fix the sound every time I start the computer anyway, so it isn't really a fix. I tried putting sudo alsactl restore in my startup programs, but that didn't seem to fix anything. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, but I started having this problem before upgrading from 11.10. I'm using a Sony Vaio laptop. I'm not really sure what made it start; it seemed like I just started having the problem randomly one day. Any help would be appreciated! • Close lid option "Do nothing" absent

  I just unpacked my new Sony Vaio, with windows 8 pro installed. Everything is nice, so I tried setting my power management options. The "When I close the lid" option only list: Hibernate Sleep Shutdown The "Do nothing" option is not present. I've seen loads of stuff on google where people ask or explain how to set this option to "Do nothing", but in all my power plans this option is absent... Can I use a tool to prevent this, or is there a way to force windows to show me this option (and that it actually works)? • Intermittent graphics issue

  An older (~3 year old) PC I have passed on to my younger brother has a Sony 17" LCD monitor and uses on-board Intel GMA 3100 graphics (supports Aero under Windows 7 and no more is required). Recently he has complained to me twice that after booting up the screen looks all 'fuzzy'. Initially I thought maybe he messed up the ClearType settings by mistake, but resetting that did nothing. The only thing that finally worked was changing the resolution to something else temporarily, then setting it back to the original native (highest supported) resolution. The second time this happened the same 'fix' worked. This is happening only intermittently as of now and is not predictable/reproducible. I suspect either the monitor or on-board graphics is dying. How can I check and confirm which of the two it is (or maybe something else you guys can think of)? If it's the on-board graphics, would I be able to keep using the same motherboard with the addition of a cheap PCI-E graphics card?

• Deactivate GPU and use IGP

  I am having some trouble with my Sony Vaio SVE1511W1e laptop. It has an ATI Radeon and the i5 has an IGP (i5 2450m). I don't often use my GPU, and the IGP would be just enough for most usage I do. Therefore, in order to improve the battery life, I wish to deactivate the GPU and use only the IGP. The problem is that my BIOS doesnt allow me to do so. But I believe it is possible to deactivate the GPU 'programatically'. I'm running Debian Wheezy on the 3.2.0.4 AMD64 kernel. The first problem I'm running into is that when I run lspci, my IGP doesnt show up. Could this be because im lacking a kernel module? (I chose a targeted installation). What are the solutions to deactivating a GPU and using an IGP on a Linux System such as debian?

• Error Formatting Memory Card

  I just tried to look at some of my pictures on my sony cyber-shot dsc-tx5, with a Lexar platinum II 16 GB memory stick, and it is now saying I have a formatting error every time I turn the camera on. The card and Camera are both 3 months old and have worked perfectly before. I tried to check the card on my computer and it says there is an error, so the camera is working but the card is not. Does anyone know how I can fix this to get the pictures off of the card?

• Bluetooth headset turns off when Skype call ends

  For about 6 months, I haven't been able to use Skype because when I end a Skype call, my Plantronics Callisto headset gets turned off. I'm paralyzed so I can't turn it on manually. I have a Sony VAIO computer running Windows 7. I have updated my Bluetooth dongle software, uninstalled and reinstalled Skype and uninstalled Skype and gone back to an earlier version; all to no avail. Neither Plantronics nor Skype technical support are interested in looking into this problem for me.
