Can't boot from Ubuntu 12.04 live USB

I'm trying to recover GRUB after installing Windows 7. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 first, then installed Windows 7 so I lost the GRUB at startup. Made a USB stick with Ubuntu to boot from, I get the menu tell it to start and it takes off but then gets stuck. The last line showing on the screen is: ata10: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0xc800 ctl 0xc480 irq 17 or this: [4.793048] scsi9 : pata_jmicron Then it just gets stuck there and the screen flashes from time to time.

Linux error when resume from RAM

The last two times that I have resumed my laptop from sleep, it has hung and given me this set of errors: [drm:atom_op_jump] *ERROR* atombios stuck in loop for more than 1sec aborting [drm:atom_execute_table_locked] *ERROR* atombios stuck executing E692 (len 460, WS 0, PS 4) @0xE6D3 hda_intel: azx_get_responce timeout, switching to single_cmd mode: last cmd=0x01170700 ata6: softreset failed (device not ready) ata4: softreset failed (device not ready) [drm:atom_op_jump] *ERROR* atombios stuck in loop for more than 1sec aborting [drm:atom_execute_table_locked] *ERROR* atombios stuck executing E692 (len 460, WS 0, PS 4) @0xE6D3 The last two messages repeat two more times. The first time this happened, Linux's Magic SysRq worked and did a soft reboot, and after that everything was fine till it went to sleep again. It wakes up and gives me this. Here are the laptop stats: Toshiba Satellite L455D-S5976 AMD Sempron SI-42 Processor 2GB DDR2 RAM HD TruBrite Display ATI Radeon Graphics (integrated) Running Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit I'm not sure about the hard drive, but its a 250GB drive with one NTFS partition, two Hidden NTFS, one Linux Swap, and one Ext4. Can someone tell me whats wrong with my laptop? NOTE: This only happens when I close the screen. My computer doesn't go to sleep with the screen open.

Apache2 slow serving static while healthy

My Apache status looks like; 201 requests/sec - 98.8 kB/second - 504 B/request 85 requests currently being processed, 345 idle workers _____CCW_C_____C__C__C_R____C_WC_________C__C____CW__C__CCC_____ __C____W______C___C___CW__C_C______C__W_C__C_____CCC____C______R CC_C_______C___C____C______________C______C__C________________C_ ___________________C______________________C_______C___C_____C___ CC____C__C___R_____C_C_CC__________C___C___________R____C_C_C___ ______C______W_W__W___C____________________C__WCC__R__R_C_______ R__RC________________________C___R____W__C____.................. .................................................... Server load is average 2 on a 4 core machine. IO utilization is 10-15% and doesn't have many jumps over 70%. Machine has almost 4 gb free and uses 0 swap. The site on the machine is a PHP site. All PHP code is optimized and fast mostly when it gets accessed, however sometimes requests get stuck. Stuck meaning; no response for at least 10 sec. We debugged the PHP code, but it is quite optimal and fast. We spend a lot of time on it until we decided to test the requesting of: <html><body>test</body></html> test.html page. This static resource also gets 'stuck' in the same manner the php pages get 'stuck'. How is the possible given the health of the system? I tested the network, but, when the PHP shows 'slowness' in the site monitoring, the html test files also take (far longer) than 10 sec to load using; time lynx -dump http://127.0.0.1/test.html We are kind of desperate to solve this problem, but we cannot seem to tackle it.

PsExec - what if the .exe you run remotely requires user interaction?

I use PsExec to deploy small .exe files to my workstations. Sometimes the .exe, for some reason, is incompatible with the system and opens a popup window with an error or some other message. Is there any way to know when the executable is 'stuck' there requiring user interaction? On my side I just have psexec running and waiting for the .exe to return (which will never return because the popup is stuck there). Since I run PsExec programmatically and I automate all the executions, when this Popup thing happens I find myself with hundreds of psexec processes stuck there and have no result back from them.. What's the best way to handle this sort of issue? Thanks.

Ubuntu 12.10 boots to purple or black screen but intermittently boots fine

I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 64bit dual booting with Win7 64bit. Windows boots fine every time. When I choose Ubuntu from Grub2 menu it will sometimes boot just fine. Most of the times though it gets stuck at a purple screen with nothing happening and no keys or key combinations working. Other times instead of the purple screen I get a black screen with a flashing cursor at the top. Nothing happens. I need to hold down the power button to restart and after a couple times of trying it will eventually boot into Ubuntu. Once that happens everything runs without any problems. I have tried different approaches to fix the problem but to no avail. I tried removing "quiet splash", used no splash, and nomodeset What I got from this was seeing all the text of the boot process but more often than not the process gets stuck right after recognizing all the USB ports and devices. If it gets stuck nothing happens (except when i plug in a usb device: it still recognizes it with a new line of text) In the case when the boot process works, after it lists the usb devices it tells me something like: recovery of read-only filesystem necessary. (its the filesystem that ubuntu runs on) then it does the recovery and i get: recovery complete. after that Ubuntu will boot properly and I get to see the login screen. I have no idea what to do to fix that problem. I have to reboot 3 to 5 times everytime I want to get into Ubuntu and I feel like I'm breaking my new Laptop. (its a lenovo ideapad z580 btw. i5 processor and nvidia gtx640 graphics card) I hope someone can help me. Thanks. Edit: i just got a "failed to enable AA error" message when waking it up from suspend. I don't know if that helps or has anything to do with the boot probs.

Host grub error after installing Virtualbox - Non Recoverable

I have been unable to fine a resolution to my problem and I have been suffering from it for a while. I can install Virtualbox and can reboot the machine successfully straight after. Once the system is back up I can run Virtualbox ans start working towards creating a new machine. So, say I am installing an XP machine. 1 time out of 10 it will work successfully first time. If it doesn't work (i.e BSOD), I delete the machine and start again. But when the time comes to finish up and switch off my computer, but it doesn't happen gracefully. As soon as I click shutdown, The machine dies. When the machine is switched back on I get: Error: no such device grub resuce I boot up my Grub Fix Live CD, but the grub reinstaller get stuck on searching for partitions, gparted just get stuck looking for devices and even fdisk -l drops a line and displays nothing and is the same. Stuck. The only way I know how to sort it is by re-installing Ubuntu. Has anyone had this problem, or know how to fix it?

USB mouse pointer only moving horizontally on macbook 6.2 with 12.04

After installing Ubuntu 12.04 on a macbook pro 6.2, the touchpad and external USB mouse worked perfectly. After rebooting I can't get either touchpad or external USB mouse to work. Sometimes no mouse pointer is visible, but more often I can only move the mouse pointer horizontally five sixths of the way across the display (from the top left). I have uninstalled mouseemu. xinput list shows the USB mouse. xinput query-state for the USB mouse shows the following: ButtonClass button[1]=up ... button[16]=up ValuatorClass Mode=Relative Proximity=In valuator[0]=480 valuator[1]=2400 valuator[2]=0 valuator[3]=3 and re-issuing this command with the pointer at its right hand extreme displays the same except for: valuator[0]=1679 So the valuator[0] seems to be the x-coordinate of the pointer and the range of motion 480-1679 is indeed about five sixths of the display width (1440). valuator[1] is suspiciously large given the display height is 900. Perhaps this is a side-effect of having previously been using a dual monitor (although booting with that monitor connected does not help). There are other entries listed under xinput list: Virtual core XTEST pointer which seems stuck at position (840,1050). bcm5974 which seems stuck at position (837,6700). Removing the bcm5974 module using rmmod disables the toucpad as expected but does not fix the USB mouse problem. After adding the module back, it is stuck at position (840,1050) instead of (837,6700). /etc/X11/xorg.conf was generated by nvidia-settings and contains: Section "InputDevice" # generated from default Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "auto" Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" although I don't know how plausible these settings are. Any suggestions?

Influence Maps for Pathfinding?

I'm taking the plunge and am getting into game dev, it's been going well but I've got stuck on a problem. I have a maze that is 100x100 with 0,1 to indicate if its a path or a wall. Within the maze I have 300 or so enemies and a player. The outcome I'm looking for is all the enemies work their way towards the player position. Originally I did this using an A* path finding algorithm but with 300 enemies it was taking forever to path find each one individually. After some research I found that an influence map / collaborative diffusion would be the best way to go. But I'm having a real hard time working out how this is actually done. Firstly.. How do you create a influence map? From what I understand each of my walls with have a scent of 0 so that makes them impassable.. then basically a radial effect from my player position to each other cell (So my player starts at 100 and then going outwards from that each other cell will be reduced value) Is that correct? If so,.. How would you do that (Math magic?) My next problem is if that is correct how would my "enemies" stop from getting stuck if they have gone down the wrong way? As say if my player was standing on the otherside of a wall if the enemy is just looking for larger numbers wont it keep getting stuck? I'm doing this in JavaScript so performance is key. Thanks for any help! EDIT: Or if anyones got a better solution? I've been reading about navmeshs, steering pathing, pre calculating all paths on load etc etc

3.2.0-31-generic version doesn't boot

12.04 used to work just fine a month ago. Since August, I installed all of the available updates. Since then my mac-pro is acting weird. If I restart the computer, the screen gets stuck in the purple back ground without any texts. Then if I restart again, I can choose what versions of linux I want to run. If I select 3.2.0-31-generic, the machine gets stuck in a state of blinking cursor. If I boot again to run 3.2.0-31-generic recovery mode, the machine gets stuck in a "..... memory freed End of Stack" mode. I can't boot through this kernel. I have to choose an older version of linux like 3.2.0-12-generic to boot into my mac pro, but I have too boot twice to get into this version. I was wondering --if you could provide me a solution to boot the 3.2.0-31-generic version. -- if you could provide me a solution to boot into any version the first time I restart. (Usually I have to kill the first restart) --- If there is an option in linux to choose what version I want to run every time I restart so that I don't have to choose everytime. Thank you

Status of Data in Rollback of Large Transaction in SQL Server

I have a data warehousing procedure that downloads and replaces dozens of tables from a linked server to a local database. Every once in a while, the code will get stuck on one of the tables on the linked server because the table on the linked server is in a state of transition. I am under the assumption that since the entire procedure is considered one transaction commit, when the procedure gets stuck, none of the changes made by the procudure so far would have committed. But the opposite seems to be true, tables that were "downloaded" before the procedure got stuck would have been updated with today's versions on the local server. Shouldn't SQL Server wait for the entire procedure to finish before the changes are durable? Strange Problem with Webservice and IIS

Hello there, I have a Problem which confuses me a little bit, resp. where I don't have any Idea about what it could be. The System I'm using is Windows Vista, IIS 7.0, VS2008, Windows Software Factory, Entity Framework, WCF. The Binding for all Webservices is wshttpbinding. I'm using a Webservice hosted in IIS. This Webservice uses/calls another Webservice (also installed in the IIS). If I use a client calling the first Webservice (which calls the second Webservice) it works fine for about 4-10 Times. And then (it is repeatable to get this Problem, but sometimes it happens after 4, sometimes after 10 Time, but it always will happen), the Service and the IIS gets stuck. Stuck means, that this Webservice isn't callable anymore and generates an timeout after 1 minute. Even increasing Timeout doesn't change anything. If i try to restart the IIS I get an timeout error. So the IIS is also "stuck" (it is not really stuck, but I can't restart it). Only if I kill the w3wp.exe IIS is restartable and the Webservice will work again (until i again call this service several times). The logfiles (i'm no expert in things like logging or where to find/enable such logs, so to say : i'm a newbie) like http-logging, Event Viewer or WCF-Message Logging don't show any hints upon the source of the problem. I don't have this problem when I'm using a Webservice which doesn't call another Service. Calling a Webservice is done by Service Reference (I'm using no Proxy-Classes), but I think this should be no Problem. I have no idea of what is happening, nor how to solve this Problem. How to leave the teamviewer window with Alt+Tab

I use Teamviewer on Ubuntu (Not sure if the problem is the same on Windows). Whenever I use Alt+TAB to change the focussed window on my computer to another window while the remote window has focus the remote window catches the Alt keydown event but not the Alt release event! So when I get back to the remote Teamviewer window the remote computer still has the Alt Key stuck pressed. How can I prevent that the Alt-key gets stuck on the remote computer?

Computer runs but monitor is on power saving mode?

This stuff rarely happens, but when it does I simply restart my PC then it works fine. But today after several restart attempts it seems to be stuck. I tried removing the video card then switched to onboard video, same thing: The PC runs, (there's power and fans are working) but the monitor is stuck on power saving mode (blank screen). Is this a monitor or PC problem? Any ideas what might be the problem? I'm Windows 7 btw.

If i buy a iOS developer license for $99, that license is then stuck to my account? Can one developer account have multiple iTunes Connect accounts or is it stuck to one? Before i started to read up on stuff my account got added to a company's iTunes Connect account. If i then buy a license would i be stuck to just develop to that company or is it possible to change? I want to develop for my self and also one specific company. Can i use the same licence or do i need two? Can you have multiple licenses/certifications or whatever its called in Xcode? Is the iOS Developer Program both for development and distribution?

Can't Boot, video drivers or x-server problem?

I was uninstalling some programs that I installed to try and get my iPod touch working with Ubuntu (I gave up on that) when ubuntu just crashed. Now after I choose ubuntu in GRUB, it gives me a screen that says "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode: your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself" It was working just fine before I started to uninstall those programs. I think that I might have uninstalled something necessary to the system. If I click OK on the screen, it gives me options to reconfigure, troubleshoot, exit to console, or restart X. But no matter what I choose I still can't boot into ubuntu - I get stuck looking at the splash screen which stalls forever. I was receiving support from one of my mate's and he was doing something with the LiveCD, and now the message doesn't pop up any more, I just get stuck at a never ending splash screen. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Drivers for NVIDIA 520M not working in Ubuntu 12.04

I am aware that this is nominally a duplicate question, however I've read the other questions and haven't been able to resolve my problem after many hours and attempts, so please don't delete it. Additionally, it seems like many answers to the other questions are specifically dependent on certain situations. My situation being different from the others I found represented, here's my question. Until last night, I had Ubuntu 12.04 installed with Wubi, and it ran ok, though slowly and with occasional hangs. So I partitioned the drive and installed 12.04 in its own partition. Now when I start it, I am stuck using 2D. I believe this is an NVIDIA bug. My NVIDIA card is a GT 520M and my machine has Optimus. Additional Drivers only displays my wireless driver. Going to System Settings Details Graphics shows Driver:Unknown, Experience:Standard. I downloaded the driver from the NVIDIA website, and ran the installer with no errors, except that the "distribution-provided pre-install script failed". After rebooting, my screen was stuck at 640X480, which was fixed by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf However, I still was stuck in 2D, and nothing else had changed either. A thread suggested something called Bumblebee. I tried that, and when I ran optirun firefoxI got a frozen blank screen. Following another suggestion, I checked the BIOS to try and disable Optimus. I found and ran myriad other commands to try and fix the problem and nothing changed. Now I have just done a clean re-install of Ubuntu. From there, I: Installed all the updates Downloaded the NVIDIA driver Installed it Got screen stuck at 640X480, fixed in xorg.conf. To recap the problem: I can't get the NVIDIA drivers working I am stuck using 2D I'm an idiot I think if the first one is solved, the solution to the second will naturally follow. If you need me to provide any other information, I'd be happy to. Moving Forward with Code Iteration

There are times when working on my programming projects, and I get to a point where I'm ready to move on to the next part of my program. However, when I sit down to implement this new feature I get stuck, in a sense. It's not that I don't know how to implement the feature, it's that I get stuck on figuring out the best way to implement said feature. So I sit back for a day or two and let the ideas ferment until I am comfortable with a design. I get worried that I may not write something as well as it could be, or that I might have to go back and rework the whole thing; so I put it off. This is a big reason why I've never really finished many personal projects. Anyone else experience this, and how do you keep your self moving forward in your project?

Just updated, after reboot my computer won't start up again

I have a macbook that I use on occasion which dual boots Ubuntu and OSX (It has rEFIt installed). I turned it on for the first time in a while and it needed a bunch of updates. So I let it run, and restarted it when it asked. When it was booting up, it got stuck at a light blue screen. There was nothing on the screen to indicate that it was doing anything - I figured it just got stuck or something, so I turned it off and back on. (I suspect now it was actually working, but I had no indication that it hadn't just frozen) Now I can't access either OSX or my Ubuntu partition. When I choose ubuntu on the rEFIt menu, it shows "No bootable device -- insert book disk and press key". If I try to start up OSX is looks like it starts loading, but instead of an apple logo there's a crossed out circle icon.

Ubuntu Software Center does not proceed from applying changes

I have a problem with Ubuntu software center. It is "Searching" and "applying changes" for long period of time. I tired to cancel by clicking cross(X) mark. However, it is now stuck at "cancelling". Can this navigation be done completely in CSS [migrated]

I am a little stuck. I have created almost everything in the picture below. What I am stuck on is I am trying to figure out how I would set it up so that when a user clicks one of the links it makes the line below become red (after the next page loads). Obviously I would need to use Jquery to detect the page then add inline css, but what I am struggling with is I want this to be as easy as possible so that I can give this template to others and then they can add or remove items as necessary. I was trying to figure out if I could somehow use a li element to do this but I have not found a way yet. Does anyone have any ideas to help me?

Alt Tab with xdotool and xkeybind

I'm trying to map alt tab behavior to a mouse button using xdotool in my .xbindkeysrc. What I want to do is map something like "xdotools keydown alt key Tab" release b:7 but by doing this the alt key gets stuck, and it prevents my other mappings from working until I press the alt key on the keyboard. Is there a way to do this without having to press the alt key to get things unstuck? Without keydown it just switches back and forth between two windows, with keydown it behaves like I want (displaying the alt-tab switcher) but the alt key is stuck. Is there a way to unstick the key after using the alt tab switcher using xdotools?

Ubuntu 13.10 New keyboard stuff bugged wine games

I have made recently a fresh install of ubuntu 13.10. Since the first day I have problems with keyboard probably because of the new ibus thing... My language is PT-PT. One of those problems is the wrong behaviours on wine. games I was running in ubuntu 13.04 (tomb-raider, Skyrim, Shadow Warrior and Dark Souls) installed in the new ubuntu 13.10 they started to get key stuck when there is a combination like W+D+R (Drifting right + reloading) and its not because of windows/wine problems because the prefixes are the same that I had in 13.04. The key stuck as already been reported on winehq for Skyrim for some one using Linux Mint that was based on the 13.10. Is there a way of making the keyboard work like I was in 13.04? Or can i change the input type? Or downgrade ibus or something like that?

Broken BURG install after backup/restore

Long story short: BURG is stuck in text mode and I can't seem to get it back to the eye-candy. I have purged and then re-installed to no avail. I am running 12.04. The long story: I originally installed onto 12.04 using Super-boot-manager (BURG-manager) and then stopped using it in favour of GRUB because I had too many entries. I then had to backup and restore Ubuntu (partition was deleted and re-created) due to unrelated issues. I re-installed GRUB2 and booted into Ubuntu to re-install BURG, but after re-booting it appears to be stuck in text mode (looks exactly like GRUB 1). Any ideas? I know I'm not supposed to be using it on 12.04 (I think) but it worked before, so what's up?

Running an old version of some software

I don't want to mingle in any backstory, but all that needs to be known is that I have a computer with Ubuntu on it and I am trying to install Windows 8 from an ISO. I am using the guide that can be found here which is a little more than four years old. Now, I've been able to accomplish everything up to Step 2, at which point I am stuck. I have downloaded the file found on that page, which can be found here, and have attempted to use it, as directed, quote; "right click the downloaded Unetbootin file, select Properties and on the "Permissions" tab, check the "Allow executing file as program" box. Then simply double click it and it should open." But, after having set checked the specified box and double clicking the file, nothing happens. Nothing is launched and nothing changes. I've been stuck here for several hours now, having failed to find a solution via Google.
