• Windows 7 / Media Center lock problem

  Hi, we have a Win7 with Media Center that is connected to a large screen. It displays a corporate slideshow near the coffeemachine. When the computer is started it automatically logs in and starts the slideshow. The problem is that on irregular time intervals (once a day, some days not) the slideshow stops and it switches to the login screen and shows which user is logged on. We don't know why this is happening. We first thought someone on the network was trying to open RDC connection to the machine, because it is the same sympthon like when you take over a machine by RDC with a different user, but nobody is doing that. Screensaver is disabled, energy settings "always on" Anybody ideas why this is happening?

• Linux HA - Best Heartbeat hardware solution

  Hi all I would ask anyone what is the best layer 2 medium for heartbeat in Linux and how it's best configured. More precisely I've been thinking about a dedicated NIC for that purpose but then i thought that if a switch breaks then i would loose the heartbeat connection for most of the cluster and STONITH 'BUM'!!! Will probably loose my job after :) Distributing the heartbeat onto the main NICs of every node trough a vif sounds reasonable but im not sure if this is the best option (at least the switches are redundant to some extent). Is it possible to use heartbeat over a bonded interface and that sounds reasonable? Do you have any other tip/solution for that issue?

• How do I backup Credentials Manager passwords (Windows 7)

  I am trying to create a backup of my stored passwords in Credentials Manager. But after Windows switches to the secure desktop to get the password for the backup file it simply announced that "Your stored logon credentials could not be backed up" and gives as explanation "Element not found", neither of which is helpful. (In fact I hate the "X could not Y" type of error message). I am an administrator on the machine and there is only one password in Credentials Manager. The sole point of the backup is to create a nearly empty Credentials Manager so that I don't have to delete manually hundreds of password entries every time I have to change my domain password. (I think Microsoft haven't throught this through properly. There appears to be no way to delete more than one entry at a time.) Any ideas?

• IP KVM switch, or serial console box for remote admin?

  We have a small server farm (11 now, may add more in the future) of HP Proliant DL160 G6s. They all run either Linux (server only, no X11) or VMware ESX. We had intended to get models with iLO, in case BIOS-level remote admin became an issue, but that didn't happen. I had an IP KVM switch recommended to me (along with some sort of Remote Reboot hardware.) I've since realized that none of our machines need GUI administration, so perhaps a serial console switch would be a cheaper and more appropriate option. Should we go for the ease of setup (plug and go, instead of turning on the feature in the BIOS and making sure the serial settings are correct) and the flexibility of an IP KVM switch even with the extra cost?   Many times I want my computer to interface old hardware. Such as radio, light switch, etc. This mostly involves pushing pressing and moving various buttons and switches. I don't want to buy new hardware I want my computer to interface the old hardware I already have. I thought about it and reached to the conclusion that what I need is a general purpose button-pusher hardware. I need a simple device I can interface by a computer and would be able to push most of the buttons we have in daily accessories, without damaging the button. Is there any such accessory availible?

  Will be starting a small graphics design firm soon, with 20 employees. Therefore need software to manage the network. Have bought a bulk license of Windows 7. I have a spare computer which can act as a server if necessary, but its an ancient Dell machine (Pentium-III). If required I would purchase an extra machine, but would like to avoid unnecessary costs at start up. • Is span monitoring on Cisco ASA 5520 possible?

  From what I have read, you can use the switchport monitor command on ASA 5505's to setup a Span port due to the back of the ASA actually being a switch. On my 5520, I do not see the switchport command listed when issuing a ? via the CLI. How do people monitor traffic on non-5505's? My goal is to connect our IDS/IPS device that is running is promiscuous mode to a Ethernet port on the 5520 to monitor WAN traffic. I do not want to have to pass the WAN traffic through a switch as it would require me to get two (for redundancy) STP/switchport capable switches.   I have multiple tabs open in IE 8 (OS is Windows 7 Home Premium). Let us name the tabs as T1, T2, T3, ... , T7 I am currently on T7. What do I do if I want to toggle between Tab T4 and T7? Alt + Tab - Switches between different apps that are open. Ctrl + Tab - Cycles through the different tabs that are open in the current Window. What I want is something like we have in Visual Studio. Irrespective of how the documents are opened, a Ctrl + Tab always toggles between the last two files opened. Is it possible in IE 8.0?

• Force10 S60 remote management

  We've got a Force10 S60 switch to replace an older Cisco. I can't find a way to give the switch itself an IP address on the local VLAN so I can ssh to it. The config guide talks about using either a management interface on a separate management network or dedicating e.g. a gigabit port as a management port with a dedicated IP address. Ideally I would like to do what we do currently with the Cisco switches, which is in effect give the entire switch an IP so it can be reached from any host on the same VLAN without having to use up a physical port on the switch or physically connect the management port to another device. Is this possible with the S60 and if so, how would you give it, say the address 10.0.1.1 in vlan 10 (10.0.1.1/24)? Thanks!!!

• force other screen on boot

  I have a multi-boot Windows 7 (32bit & 64 bit) on my HP Notebook. Unfortunately, the Notebook screen has been trashed (due to daughter dropping it). So I have attached a second screen. On the 64 bit system, after windows has started, the logon screen comes up on the 2nd monitor just fine. On the 32 bit system, the logon screen still comes up on the Notebook monitor and I have to open the lid, and shut it so that it then switches to the attached screen. In both cases the display has been set to only display on the attached screen (ie if I "identify" the attached screen says: '1'). Is there any setting I can use to force the OS to use the attached screen? TIA, Paolo

• Sonicwall - dual WAN ports - switch from one to another

  Hi, Folks! I'm using a SonicWall NSA 240 which has two WAN ports (T1 and Comcast) and the LAN port has a cable which connects to a switch. From the switch, several cables connect to other switches. The SonicWall doesn't have DHCP enabled; one of our domain controllers running Windows Server 2003 also functions as a DHCP server. Is there a way for a user in our network to change connection from T1 to Comcast as their ISP or vice versa? • Wall jacks to patch panel?

  OK, I'm by no means a seasoned networking pro and I had no say so in the design of our current server room which is in dire need of an extreme makeover. Basically, in our server room we have 12 wall plates with 4 RJ-45 ports on each - 48 total RJ-45 ports. From these 48 ports is a spaghetti bowl of network cables feeding our servers located in a rack - there is no patch panel currently, just straight from the wall jack to each server. What I was wondering is, is it feasible to mount a 48 port patch panel in our server rack and feed into this patch panel from the wall jacks (of course nicely routing this cable through some new cable trays)? We really don't have the funds to mount the patch panel and have it fed directly from the switches in the telcom closet which is several hundred feet away. • How to disable horizontal scrolling within virtualbox on Ubuntu guest, Windows 7 host?

  I am using Windows 7 as Host, Ubuntu Karmic as guest OS with guest tools installed and I get an annoying glitch when switching from host to the guest machine: Vertical scrolling switches to horizontal! (using the mouse wheel). Since I don't really care about horizontal scrolling, how can I disable this? I have checked the web and the only thing I found was to play in the xorg.conf file and adding in the section "InputDevice" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" which would enable vertical scrolling only. The thing is, I don't have that section in my config file so I guessed that I would need to add Section "InputDevice" Identifier "VBoxMouse" Driver "vboxmouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection But that does not seem to work after restarting xserver. Any workaround for this?

• Ethernet switch not working

  I've just tried using two different ethernet switches on my network to replace an 8-port Netgear gigabit ethernet switch, which works fine, but doesn't have enough ports for what I need. Computers are connected to a TP-Link TD-8840T router via a switch. They use DHCP for IP address assignment. One switch is a TigerSwitch 6924M, which I'd expect to be difficult to set up, since it is second hand and has an advanced configuration menu, which I can't access without a serial port. However, the second switch that I tried is a new TP-Link TL-SF024, which doesn't appear to have any configuration options, so that can't be the problem. When I say "not working," I mean that although they display that they are connected to a network, they cannot access the internet. For example commands like "ping -c10 google.co.uk" come up with 100% packet loss. What could be causing the problem and how do I fix it?

For the desktop, i have been dealing with WDS (Window deployment services). Not a lot of hardware. My question is this, is it really important to have an AT cert under your belt. • How does Router know where to forward packet

  If several computers with local addresses (192.168.0.#) are connected to a router and each computer opens a web browser and requests a page over HTTP, when these TCP:80 packets are sent out, the router switches the local address with the static IP of the router (i.e. Provider given IP) so the server can reply to the appropriate address. But how does the router know to which computer to forward the HTTP reply, since the TCP header does not contain the local IP address (does it?), and all computers are using port 80? Does this have anything to do with the MAC addresses? How exactly does this work?

  I have a machine at home for my personal use. I also have a machine for work. I have a pair of DVI monitors. An ideal set up for a KVM switch. Sadly the cheapest switch I can find that will switch 2 DVI monitors is nearly £300. However, I can get, for just £40, a switch for a single monitor. Is there any reason why I couldn't employ 2 of these much cheaper switches? My thought was to have the keyboard, mouse and one of the monitors in one switch and just the 2nd monitor in the 2nd switch. Logically, I can't think of a reason why this wouldn't work, but I have no real background to be able to say, definatively, whether or not it would. It it makes any difference, both machines are running Win7. Appreciate any thoughts. -- Stuart

• In windows xp, how can I set the default browser from chrome to IE via Command Line, without admin privs

  Situation: 1. Need to Set the defualt browser to IE via cmd(problem) 2. Need to do a citrix login via IE(amounts to loading a url) beause it wont run in google chrome 3. then set default browser to chrome Environment: Windows XP, no admin priv's no admin priv's mean I can't touch registry Basic Steps I'm Doing: In a bat file: 1.Set default browser to IE 2.run a citrix SSO login via IE (not compatible with chrome) 3.Set default browser to Chrome 4.kill IE 5.live long and prosper So i have it all running except "Set default browser to IE" I can set the default browser to chome by using portable chrome's cmd line argument --make-default-browser but I can't undo that process. If I launch IE, it pops up that 'make ie default browser' window which stops the SSO process. So If I can disable that check via bat file, that would also work for me.   I need to speak tomorrow the network engineer and I would like to understand his so apologise for the Dummy question: In the school we have a cab with a 24 port Netgear manageable switch with an admin and curriculum VLAN settings. Usually, as I over heard, in the morning and around 4.30pm there are a slowdown period on the computers which connect to this switch. No one could track this back yet. Questions: What is the best way to track back this slowdown Would it be a temporary solution to physical separate the two network with 2 switches If that would work how can I link them together to be able to see the curriculum from the admin side. Do I need an extra router then? Too many questions but I have no clue where to start and the gentleman will be paid by hours... can you see where I am coming from?:) Could you guide me in the right direction please? • Multiple monitors with MAC latop/PC: how to switch output?

  I have two monitors, a PC that uses both of them, and a MAC laptop. The dilemma in my mind is how to keep the two monitor state in the PC active, while still being able to switch one monitor to the laptop's output. Is this even possible? I figure as soon as output is switched, my PC will detect a monitor has been unplugged, and will switch to a one-monitor state. The ideal would be to have a switch that switches from the PC two monitor output state to one where one monitor is being used by the MAC. Thanks for any help, Dane

  I have a problem of accidental input language switch. I tried many different settings in order to not do it - change hotkey, install some software (Key Switcher, Keyboard Ninja, Punto Switcher)... But nothing helped. I used to certain hotkey (Ctrl+Shift). Any other hotkey make me even more suffer. The software s found has no feature to avoid accidental switches. What I want is to find a piece of software which can stick "English US" input language to my "Visual Studio". And any Ctrl+Shift pushes inside VS should not lead to language switch. Have any ideas?

• Oracle RAC interconnect in a Dell M1000e Blade Enclosure

  We are looking at a Dell M1000e enclosure and appropriate Blades with 4 NICs each. We are planning on running Linux/Oracle 11g RAC on two blades, storage will be handled on an iSCSI SAN for which two NICs (via passthrough) will be connected leaving us with two NICs (via blade centre switches). We would like to have an interconnect (obviously) , an external IP and an internal IP. Would best practice be to: bond the remaining two interfaces and VLAN as appropriate to provide three virtual interfaces? run the interconnect on one interface and VLAN the external/internal interfaces? purchase a blade with more NICs as the above is a terrible idea? Another option? Please feel free to point out the blindingly obvious or to relevant documentation on support.oracle. I am specifically interested in supported configurations and best practices. • How can I access the external microphone with Ubuntu?

  Sound in Ubuntu, it has its own special joy. I would like my external microphone to work. Symptoms: I can play sound through the speakers I can play sound through the headsets. Plugging and and plugging headphone output correctly switches. I can record from the built-in microphone, using "Sound Recorder" and others. but: I cannot record from the external microphone. My Sound Preferences/Input panel has no option for an external microphone. If the answer is upgrade the ALSA drivers, please say exactly what to type. • MAC to IP binding in ASA 5510 / SG 300-52

  I am trying to configure a Cisco ASA 5510 to assign specific IP-addresses to specific MACs. Firmware on my ASA is 8.2(5). I have used this feature in our previous device (Cisco SA-520W). I have also read that this feature is (not yet) implemented. How do I work around this problem, if not by direct assignment? Do I need to specify fixed IP's on concerned devices themselves? I also have a SG 300-52 switch for our LAN. We cannot specify IP-addresses to ports, because we have further switches down the line. Thank you for your help!
