  • How do I implement a remove by index method for a singly linked list in Java?

    - by Lars Flyger
Hi, I'm a student in a programming class, and I need some help with this code I've written. So far I've written an entire linked list class (seen below), yet for some reason the "removeByIndex" method won't work. I can't seem to figure out why, the logic seems sound to me. Is there some problem I don't know about? public class List<T> { //private sub-class Link private class Link { private T value; private Link next; //constructors of Link: public Link (T val) { this.value = val; this.next = null; } public Link (T val, Link next) { this.value = val; this.next = next; } @SuppressWarnings("unused") public T getValue() { return value; } } private static final Exception NoSuchElementException = null; private static final Exception IndexOutOfBoundsException = null; private Link chain = null; //constructors of List: public List() { this.chain = null; } //methods of List: /** * Preconditions: none * Postconditions: returns true if list is empty */ public boolean isEmpty() { return this.chain == null; } /** * Preconditions: none * Postconditions: A new Link is added via add-aux * @param element */ public void add(T element) { this.add_aux(element, this.chain); } /** * Preconditions: none * Postconditions: A new Link is added to the current chain * @param element * @param chain */ private void add_aux(T element, Link chain) { if (chain == null) { //if chain is null set chain to a new Link with a value of //element this.chain = new Link(element); } else if (chain.next != null) { //if chain.next is not null, go to next item in chain and //try //to add element add_aux(element, chain.next); } else { //if chain.next is null, set chain.next equal to a new Link //with value of element. chain.next = new Link(element); } } /** * Preconditions: none * Postconditions: returns the link at the defined index via nthlink_aux * @param index * @return */ private Link nthLink (int index) { return nthLink_aux(index, this.chain); } /** * Preconditions: none * Postconditions: returns the link at the defined index in the specified *chain * @param i * @param c * @return */ private Link nthLink_aux (int i, Link c) { if (i == 0) { return c; } else return nthLink_aux(i-1, c.next); } /** * Preconditions: the specified element is present in the list * Postconditions: the specified element is removed from the list * @param element * @throws Exception */ public void removeElement(T element) throws Exception { if (chain == null) { throw NoSuchElementException; } //while chain's next is not null and the value of chain.next is not //equal to element, //set chain equal to chain.next //use this iteration to go through the linked list. else while ((chain.next != null) && !(chain.next.value.equals(element))){ Link testlink = chain.next; if (testlink.next.value.equals(element)) { //if chain.next is equal to element, bypass the //element. chain.next.next = chain.next.next.next; } else if (testlink.next == null) { throw NoSuchElementException; } } } /** * Preconditions: none * Postsconditions: the Link at the specified index is removed * @param index * @throws Exception */ public void removeByIndex(int index) throws Exception { if (index == 0) { //if index is 0, set chain equal to chain.next chain = chain.next; } else if (index > 0) { Link target = nthLink(index); while (target != null) { if (target.next != null) { target = target.next; } //if target.next is null, set target to null else { target = null; } } return; } else throw IndexOutOfBoundsException; } /** * Preconditions: none * Postconditions: the specified link's value is printed * @param link */ public void printLink (Link link) { if(link != null) { System.out.println(link.value.toString()); } } /** * Preconditions: none * Postconditions: all of the links' values in the list are printed. */ public void print() { //copy chain to a new variable Link head = this.chain; //while head is not null while (!(head == null)) { //print the current link this.printLink(head); //set head equal to the next link head = head.next; } } /** * Preconditions: none * Postconditions: The chain is set to null */ public void clear() { this.chain = null; } /** * Preconditions: none * Postconditions: Places the defined link at the defined index of the list * @param index * @param val */ public void splice(int index, T val) { //create a new link with value equal to val Link spliced = new Link(val); if (index <= 0) { //copy chain Link copy = chain; //set chain equal to spliced chain = spliced; //set chain.next equal to copy chain.next = copy; } else if (index > 0) { //create a target link equal to the link before the index Link target = nthLink(index - 1); //set the target's next equal to a new link with a next //equal to the target's old next target.next = new Link(val, target.next); } } /** * Preconditions: none * Postconditions: Check to see if element is in the list, returns true * if it is and false if it isn't * @param element * @return */ public boolean Search(T element) { if (chain == null) { //return false if chain is null return false; } //while chain's next is not null and the value of chain.next is not //equal to element, //set chain equal to chain.next //use this iteration to go through the linked list. else while ((chain.next != null) && !(chain.next.value.equals(element))) { Link testlink = chain.next; if (testlink.next.value.equals(element)) { //if chain.next is equal to element, return true return true; } else if (testlink.next == null) { return false; } } return false; } /** * Preconditions: none * Postconditions: order of the links in the list is reversed. */ public void reverse() { //copy chain Link current = chain; • Throwing an exception while handling an exception

    - by FredOverflow
If a destructor throws in C++ during stack unwinding caused by an exception, the program terminates. (That's why destructors should never throw in C++.) If a finally block is entered in Java because of an exception in the corresponding try block and that finally block throws another exception, the first exception is silently swallowed. This question crossed my mind: Could a programming language handle multiple exceptions being thrown at the same time? Would that be useful? Have you ever missed that ability? Is there a language that already supports this? Is there any experience with such an approach? Any thoughts?

  • How to work with varargs and reflection

    - by PeterMmm
    Simple question, how make this code working ? public class T { public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { new T().m(); } public // as mentioned by Bozho void foo(String... s) { System.err.println(s[0]); } void m() throws Exception { String[] a = new String[]{"hello", "kitty"}; System.err.println(a.getClass()); Method m = getClass().getMethod("foo", a.getClass()); m.invoke(this, (Object[]) a); } } Output: class [Ljava.lang.String; Exception in thread "main" java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: wrong number of arguments at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(NativeMethodAccessorImpl.java:39) at sun.reflect.DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.java:25) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:597)

  • Handling hundreds of actions in Struts2

    - by Roberto
Hi all, I've inherited a struts 1 web application where, in order to reduce the number of Action classes (I guess this is the reason), lots of actions are mapped inside a single Action class, like: public XXXAction() throws Exception{ actions = new Hashtable(); actions.put("/XXX/main/load", new Integer(0)); actions.put("/XXX/main/save", new Integer(1)); ...... } public ActionForward executeAction(ActionMapping mapping, ActionForm form, HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res) throws IOException, ServletException { try { switch (((Integer) actions.get(action)).intValue()) { case 0: loadXXXMain(); break; case 1: ....... and so on (in some Action classes I have almost one hundred of these small actions). Now I'm looking at migrate to struts2 and I would like to have a cleaner and better solution to handle this, maybe without having a single Action class for each of these small classes. What do you suggest? I don't like this solution, but I don't like having hundreds of Action classes.... Thanks! Roberto

  • Does throwing an exception in an EvalFunc pig UDF skip just that line, or stop completely?

    - by Daniel Huckstep
I have a User Defined Function (UDF) written in Java to parse lines in a log file and return information back to pig, so it can do all the processing. It looks something like this: public abstract class Foo extends EvalFunc<Tuple> { public Foo() { super(); } public Tuple exec(Tuple input) throws IOException { try { // do stuff with input } catch (Exception e) { throw WrappedIOException.wrap("Error with line", e); } } } My question is: if it throws the IOException, will it stop completely, or will it return results for the rest of the lines that don't throw an exception? Example: I run this in pig REGISTER myjar.jar DEFINE Extractor com.namespace.Extractor(); logs = LOAD '$IN' USING TextLoader AS (line: chararray); events = FOREACH logs GENERATE FLATTEN(Extractor(line)); With this input: 1.5 7 "Valid Line" 1.3 gghyhtt Inv"alid line"" I throw an exceptioN!! 1.8 10 "Valid Line 2" Will it process the two lines and will 'logs' have 2 tuples, or will it just die in a fire?

  • Can we use spring FTL based form validations with any controller other than SimpleFormController

    - by Adhir Aima
Hi, Because of some design specification we have to extend all controllers in spring MVC from a class that extends AbstractCommandController. I am trying to include the spring FTL based form validations in my FTL file, but it gives me an error like Method public org.springframework.web.servlet.support.BindStatus org.springframework.web.servlet.support.RequestContext.getBindStatus(java.lang.String) throws java.lang.IllegalStateException threw an exception when invoked on org.springframework.web.servlet.support.RequestContext@b05cd7 with arguments of types [java.lang.String,] The problematic instruction: == assignment: status=springMacroRequestContext.getBindStatus(path) [on line 120, column 9 in spring.ftl] in user-directive spring.bind [on line 47, column 33 in myProfile.ftl] Java backtrace for programmers: freemarker.template.TemplateModelException: Method public org.springframework.web.servlet.support.BindStatus org.springframework.web.servlet.support.RequestContext.getBindStatus(java.lang.String) throws java.lang.IllegalStateException threw an exception when invoked on org.springframework.web.servlet.support.RequestContext@b05cd7 with arguments of types [java.lang.String,] I have put the command name properly in the controller class and in the controller class, neither the specified name nor the default "command" works. Some help please. And would be much appreciated if it comes with an example. Thanks in advance, Adhir Aima

  • JOGL program does not compile - javac with classpath

    - by user1720523
I want to run a HelloWorld JOGL programm on the commandline. I downloaded the .jars from jogamp.org and put the gluegen-rt.jar , jogl.all.jar , gluegen-java-src.zip , jogl-java-src.zip , gluegen-rt-natives-macosx-universal.jar , jogl-all-natives-macosx-universal.jar in a directory "jar" in my HelloWorld folder - as described in http://jogamp.org/wiki/index.php/Downloading_and_installing_JOGL . Now I try to compile with javac -classpath "jar/gluegen-rt.jar:jar/jogl.all.jar" HelloWorld.java as described on https://jogamp.org/wiki/index.php/Setting_up_a_JogAmp_project_in_your_favorite_IDE . Then it throws me 14 errors starting with HelloWorld.java:7: package javax.media.opengl does not exist import javax.media.opengl.GL; ^ When I try to compile with absolute paths using javac -classpath "/Users/jonas/Desktop/cool_jogl/helloworld/jar/gluegen-rt.jar:/Users/jonas/Desktop/cool_jogl/helloworld/jar/jogl-all.jar" HelloWorld.java it still throws me 12 errors starting with HelloWorld.java:9: cannot find symbol symbol : class GLCanvas location: package javax.media.opengl import javax.media.opengl.GLCanvas; ^

  • What does <project> is obsolete mean?

    - by dangerisgo
My batch build has a project, lets call it 'My.Project'. That project got up-reved to .NET 3.5 (from .NET 1.1) in its own standalone project (meaning its not part of this batch build). Most of it is the same, there are calls that were upgraded, features added/removed. I go to start replacing all calls that all the other projects use to that, now old, project with new calls. I first remove the old reference and then add the new one. One of my projects only has one call. When I go to make the changes, one namespace in the new project throws a 'My.Project.Namespace1 is obsolete' while another call to that project throws nothing. Is there something I should be looking for? What would be causing this?

  • Convert scientific notation to decimal notation

    - by Ankur
There is a similar question on SO which suggests using NumberFormat which is what I have done. I am using the parse() method of NumberFormat. public static void main(String[] args) throws ParseException{ DecToTime dtt = new DecToTime(); dtt.decToTime("1.930000000000E+02"); } public void decToTime(String angle) throws ParseException{ DecimalFormat dform = new DecimalFormat(); //ParsePosition pp = new ParsePosition(13); Number angleAsNumber = dform.parse(angle); System.out.println(angleAsNumber); } The result I get is 1.93 I didn't really expect this to work because 1.930000000000E+02 is a pretty unusual looking number, do I have to do some string parsing first to remove the zeros? Or is there a quick and elegant way?

  • Know if a variable is a native object in javascript

    - by mck89
Hi, is there a way to know if a variable passed into a function is a native object? I mean, i have a function that requires only native objects as arguments, for every other type of variable it throws an error. So: func(Array); //works func(String); //works func(Date); //works func(Object); //works ... func([]); //Throwr error func({}); //Throws error I want to know if there's a way to distinguish between native objects and everything else.

  • Can the Perl compiler tell me if I have an unchecked exception in my code?

    - by Konerak
Is there a way in Perl to declare that a method can throw an error (or die)? EDIT: What interests me the most is a way to get the compiler or IDE to tell me I have an unchecked exception somewhere in my code. I always loved how in Java, a method could handle an Exception and/or throw it. The method signature allows to put "throws MyException", so a good IDE/compiler would know that if you use said method somewhere in your code, you'd have to check for the Exception or declare your function to "throws" the Exception further. I'm unable to find something alike in Perl. A collegue of mine wrote a method which "dies" on incorrect input, but I forget to eval-if($@) it... offcourse the error was only discovered while a user was running the application. (offcourse I doubt if there is any existing IDE that could find these kind of things for Perl, but atleast perl -cw should be able to, no?)

  • How to prevent "Local transaction already has 1 non-XA Resource" exception?

    - by Zeratul
Hi, I'm using 2 PU in stateless EJB and each of them is invoked on one method: @PersistenceContext(unitName="PU") private EntityManager em; @PersistenceContext(unitName="PU2") private EntityManager em2; @TransactionAttribute(TransactionAttributeType.REQUIRES_NEW ) public void getCandidates(final Integer eventId) throws ControllerException { ElectionEvent electionEvent = em.find(ElectionEvent.class, eventId); ... Person person = getPerson(candidate.getLogin()); ... } @TransactionAttribute(TransactionAttributeType.REQUIRES_NEW ) private Person getPerson(String login) throws ControllerException { Person person = em2.find(Person.class, login); return person; } Those methods are annotated with REQUIRES_NEW transcaction to avoid this exception. When I was calling these method from javaFX applet, all worked as expected. Now I'm trying to call them from JAX-RS webservice (I don't see any logical difference as in both cases ejb was looked up in initial context) and I keep getting this exception. When I set up XADatasource in glassfish 2.1 connection pools, I got nullpointer exception on em2. Any ideas what to try next? Regards

  • when to use the abstract factory pattern?

    - by hguser
Hi: I want to know when we need to use the abstract factory pattern. Here is an example,I want to know if it is necessary. The UML THe above is the abstract factory pattern, it is recommended by my classmate. THe following is myown implemention. I do not think it is necessary to use the pattern. And the following is some core codes: package net; import java.io.IOException; import java.util.HashMap; import java.util.Map; import java.util.Properties; public class Test { public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException, InstantiationException, IllegalAccessException, ClassNotFoundException { DaoRepository dr=new DaoRepository(); AbstractDao dao=dr.findDao("sql"); dao.insert(); } } class DaoRepository { Map<String, AbstractDao> daoMap=new HashMap<String, AbstractDao>(); public DaoRepository () throws IOException, InstantiationException, IllegalAccessException, ClassNotFoundException { Properties p=new Properties(); p.load(DaoRepository.class.getResourceAsStream("Test.properties")); initDaos(p); } public void initDaos(Properties p) throws InstantiationException, IllegalAccessException, ClassNotFoundException { String[] daoarray=p.getProperty("dao").split(","); for(String dao:daoarray) { AbstractDao ad=(AbstractDao)Class.forName(dao).newInstance(); daoMap.put(ad.getID(),ad); } } public AbstractDao findDao(String id) {return daoMap.get(id);} } abstract class AbstractDao { public abstract String getID(); public abstract void insert(); public abstract void update(); } class SqlDao extends AbstractDao { public SqlDao() {} public String getID() {return "sql";} public void insert() {System.out.println("sql insert");} public void update() {System.out.println("sql update");} } class AccessDao extends AbstractDao { public AccessDao() {} public String getID() {return "access";} public void insert() {System.out.println("access insert");} public void update() {System.out.println("access update");} } And the content of the Test.properties is just one line: dao=net.SqlDao,net.SqlDao So any ont can tell me if this suitation is necessary?

  • Hibernate save() and transaction rollback

    - by Marco
Hi, In Hibernate when i save() an object in a transaction, and then i rollback it, the saved object still remains in the DB. It's strange because this issue doesn't happen with the update() or delete() method, just with save(). Here is the code i'm using: DbEntity dbEntity = getDbEntity(); HibernateUtil.beginTransaction(); Session session = HibernateUtil.getCurrentSession(); session.save(dbEntity); HibernateUtil.rollbackTransaction(); And here is the HibernateUtil class (just the involved functions, i guarantee the getSessionFactory() method works well - there is an Interceptor handler, but it doesn't matter now): private static final ThreadLocal<Session> threadSession = new ThreadLocal<Session>(); private static final ThreadLocal<Transaction> threadTransaction = new ThreadLocal<Transaction>(); /** * Retrieves the current Session local to the thread. * <p/> * If no Session is open, opens a new Session for the running thread. * * @return Session */ public static Session getCurrentSession() throws HibernateException { Session s = (Session) threadSession.get(); try { if (s == null) { log.debug("Opening new Session for this thread."); if (getInterceptor() != null) { log.debug("Using interceptor: " + getInterceptor().getClass()); s = getSessionFactory().openSession(getInterceptor()); } else { s = getSessionFactory().openSession(); } threadSession.set(s); } } catch (HibernateException ex) { throw new HibernateException(ex); } return s; } /** * Start a new database transaction. */ public static void beginTransaction() throws HibernateException { Transaction tx = (Transaction) threadTransaction.get(); try { if (tx == null) { log.debug("Starting new database transaction in this thread."); tx = getCurrentSession().beginTransaction(); threadTransaction.set(tx); } } catch (HibernateException ex) { throw new HibernateException(ex); } } /** * Rollback the database transaction. */ public static void rollbackTransaction() throws HibernateException { Transaction tx = (Transaction) threadTransaction.get(); try { threadTransaction.set(null); if ( tx != null && !tx.wasCommitted() && !tx.wasRolledBack() ) { log.debug("Tyring to rollback database transaction of this thread."); tx.rollback(); } } catch (HibernateException ex) { throw new HibernateException(ex); } finally { closeSession(); } } Thanks

  • Throw a long list of exceptions vs throw an Exception vs throw custom exception?

    - by athena
I have an application which uses two methods of an API. Both these methods throw more than five exceptions each. So, if I just add a throws declaration then it becomes a list of more than ten. (My method cannot handle any of the ten exceptions) I have read that throwing a long list of exceptions is a bad practice. Also throwing (the umbrella) Exception is a bad practice. So, what should I do? Add a try catch block, and log and exit in the catch block? (Current approach) Create a custom exception class, wrap every exception and throw the custom exception? Add a throws declaration for all exceptions? Throw Exception?

  • Boost 1.4.0, "assert" identifier not found

    - by Adam Haile
I'm trying to compile an old project that was originally written for linux on windows. It uses boost 1.4.0, and whenever I compile it throws error C3961: "assert" : identifier not found. I'm using Visual Studio 208 SP1 When I drill down into assert.hpp it includes this: # include <assert.h> // .h to support old libraries w/o <cassert> - effect is the same # define BOOST_ASSERT(expr) assert(expr) BOOST_ASSERT is actually what's failing, and VS doesn't seem to recognize assert() even though assert.h is obviously included. As far as I can tell, all the fails are in files that are part of boost, not my own code, but it throws about 1200 of them. Any ideas how to fix this?

  • What to pass to UserType, BlobType.setPreparedStatement session parameter

    - by dlots
http://blog.xebia.com/2009/11/09/understanding-and-writing-hibernate-user-types/ I am attempting to defined a customer serialization UserType that mimics, the XStreamUserType referenced and provided here: http://code.google.com/p/aphillips/source/browse/commons-hibernate-usertype/trunk/src/main/java/com/qrmedia/commons/persistence/hibernate/usertype/XStreamableUserType.java My serializer outputs a bytearray that should presumably written to a Blob. I was going to do: public class CustomSerUserType extends DirtyCheckableUserType { protected SerA ser=F.g(SerA.class); public Class<Object> returnedClass() { return Object.class; } public int[] sqlTypes() { return new int[] {Types.BLOB}; } public Object nullSafeGet(ResultSet resultSet,String[] names,Object owner) throws HibernateException,SQLException { if() } public void nullSafeSet(PreparedStatement preparedStatement,Object value, int index) throws HibernateException,SQLException { BlobType.nullSafeSet(preparedStatement,ser.ser(value),index); } } Unfortunetly, the BlobType.nullSafeSet method requires the session. So how does one define a UserType that gets access to a servlet requests session? EDIT: There is a discussion of the issue here and it doesn't appear there is a solution: Best way to implement a Hibernate UserType after deprecations?

  • Problem with a SQL statement

    - by benwad
I'm trying to enter values into a database table using a form and a PHP function. The PHP seems to be fine as the SQL statement it creates looks okay, but the database always throws up an error. This is the SQL statement that my code has generated (with arbitrary values): INSERT INTO Iteminfo ('itemName', 'itemSeller', 'itemCategory', 'itemDescription', 'itemPrice', 'itemPostage', 'itemBegin', 'itemEnd', 'buynow', 'itemPicture') values ('gorillaz album', 'ben', 'music', 'new one ', '5.00', '1.00', '2010-03-15 14:59:51', '2010-03-16 14:59:51', '0', 'http://www.thefader.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/gorillaz-plastic-beach.jpg') This throws up an error both when I use the PHP function to evaluate the query and also when I use phpMyAdmin to enter the query manually. However, I can't see anything wrong with it. Can anyone shed some light on this? All of the fields are VARCHAR values, except for itemPrice and itemPostage (which are stored as DECIMAL(4,2)) and the itemBegin and itemEnd, which are stored as DATETIMEs.

  • UnitTest ExpectedException with multiple Exceptions

    - by masterchris_99
    I want one TestMethod for multiple exceptions. The Problem ist that the Testmethod stops after the first thrown exception. I know that I can do something like that: try { sAbc.ToInteger(); Assert.Fail(); // If it gets to this line, no exception was thrown } catch (ArgumentException) { } But I want to use the following code-base: [TestMethod, ExpectedException(typeof(ArgumentException), "...")] public void StringToIntException() { sAbc.ToInteger(); // throws an exception and stops here sDecimal.ToInteger(); // throws theoretically a exception too... } And I don't want to create one testmethod for each possible exception like that: [TestMethod, ExpectedException(typeof(ArgumentException), "...")] public void StringToIntException() { sAbc.ToInteger(); } [TestMethod, ExpectedException(typeof(ArgumentException), "...")] public void StringToIntException() { sDecimal.ToInteger(); }
