• Anyone using a CMS with a DAM back-end for Asset Management?

  Anyone here have any experience with using a CMS system for content and populating the site with images/assets from a DAM system? Working with a large number of assets (photos, logos, files, etc) that will be stored on a DAM system for management, revisions, etc. Would like to build a front-end system to help serve up the assets for the users as well as keep the general site updated with non-asset information (like what's new, faq's, etc.) Any ideas/thoughts on this from anyone who has been down this path? • Test problem using JUnitPerf

  Hi, guys, I'm writing a JUnit test using JUnitPerf. Here, I want to generate some entries and use them to update a database. To test the capacity of the database, I want several test to run simultaneously or randomly, so I use, for example: Test loadTest = new LoadTest(testCase, n); But, still, I have to insure that in each test, a different update source will be used so that a different entry in the database will be updated. • Getters and Setters: Code smell, Necessary Evil, or Can't Live Without Them [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Allen Holub wrote “You should never use get/set functions”, is he correct? Is there a good, no, a very good reason, to go through all the trouble of using getters and setters for object-oriented languages? What's wrong with just using a direct reference to a property or method? Is there some kind of "semantical coverup" that people don't want to talk about in polite company? Was I just too tired and fell asleep when someone walked out and said "Thou Shalt Write Copious Amounts of Code to Obtain Getters and Setters"? Follow-up after a year: It seems to be a common occurrence with Java, less so with Python. I'm beginning to wonder if this is more of a cultural phenomena (related to the limitations of the language) rather than "sage advice". The -1 question score is complete for-the-lulz as far as I am concerned. It's interesting that there are specific questions that are downvoted, not because they are "bad questions", but rather, because they hit someone's raw nerve.

• Add version control to existing SQL Server database

  I am part of a development team currently working with a database that does not have any kind of source control. We work with SQL Server 2008 R2 and have always managed the DB directly with SSMS. It now has ~340 tables and ~1600 stored procedures, plus a few triggers and views, so it is not a small DB. My goal is to have the DB under version control, so I have been reading articles, like Scott Allen's series (http://bitly.com/9cJmGR) and many old SO related questions. But I am still unable to decide on how to proceed. What I'm thinking of is to script the database schema in one file, then procedures, triggers and views in one file each. Then keep everything versioned under Mercurial. But of course, every member of the team can access SSMS and directly change the schema and procedures, with the possibility that any of us can forget to replicate those changes in the versioned files. What better options are there? And, did I forget any element worth having source control of?

• Windows authetication with Silverlight custom binding.

  Hello, I am trying to set up security within a web.config file for a WCF service hosted in IIS but keep getting the error message: Security settings for this service require 'Anonymous' Authentication but it is not enabled for the IIS application that hosts this service. I have read Nicholas Allen’s blog (link text) and it appears that this is the route that I need to take. However, I am using “binaryMessageEncoding” in a customBinding for my Silverlight service, and as such, I’m not sure how to apply this type of security to such an element. This is how my custom binding looks in config at present: <customBinding> <binding name="silverlightBinaryBinding"> <binaryMessageEncoding /> <httpTransport /> </binding> </customBinding> Has anyone had any experience getting Windows authentication to work with a custom binding using binaryMessageEncoding?   Hi all, I have a small amount of programing experience with Siemens and Allen Bradley but would like to make my own app for a certain website I frequent. I would like the website to be a little more user friendly for me instead of having to open browser etc. Is it possible to have a simple forum translated into a widget so you can see the forum posts and post from there?   Am 6.5.2011 findet in Köln die dotnet Cologne 2011 statt, eine von der .NET User Group Köln und der von mir geleiteten Gruppe Bonn-to-Code.Net gemeinsam organisierte Community-Konferenz rund um .NET. Die “dotnet Cologne” hat sich mittlerweile als die große .NET Community- Konferenz in Deutschland etabliert. So war die letztjährige dotnet Cologne 2010 mit 300 Teilnehmern bereits einen Monat im Voraus ausgebucht. Und heise online schrieb: “Inzwischen besitzt die dotnet Cologne ein weites Einzugsgebiet. Die Teilnehmer kommen nicht mehr ausschließlich aus dem Kölner Umfeld, sondern aus allen Teilen Deutschlands [...] Die gute Qualität des Vorjahres in Verbindung mit einem geringen Preis hat sich schnell herumgesprochen, sodass Teilnehmer aus Bayern oder Thüringen keine Ausnahme waren.” Auch in diesem Jahr erwartet die Teilnehmer ein ganzer Tag voll mit Themen rund um .NET.   Was für ein Tag! Unter dem Motto „Maximize your Potential“ kamen über 470 Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer beim Oracle Partner Day 2012 zusammen. Hier drehte sich alles um unsere Partner, die, wie Silvia Kaske, Senior Director Alliances & Channel Europe North, in ihrer Begrüßung betonte, „ein sehr wichtiger Baustein in der Wachstumsstrategie von Oracle“ sind. Wie einmalig diese Partnerschaft ist, betonte auch David Callaghan, Senior Vice President EMEA Alliances & Channel in seiner Keynote. Niemand sonst habe, so Callaghan, in ähnlichem Ausmaß wie Oracle, Hardware und Software tatsächlich integriert. So manche Anbieter würden zwar beides zusammenschnüren, aber bei weitem nicht so optimal abgestimmt und verflochten, wie beim „Red Stack“ von Oracle. Neben Keynotes von Jürgen Kunz, SVP Technology Northern Europe & Country Leader Germany, und Christian Werner, Senior Director Alliances & Channels Germany, zu Neuheiten und Entwicklungspotenzialen im Oracle Universum und den Präsentationen aus verschiedenen Spezialisierung-Fachgebieten, gab es sogar einen Blick in die Zukunft der IT: Der Informatiker Professor Hermann Maurer präsentierte nicht nur existierende und geplante Innovationen, etwa die berüchtigte Computerbrille, die bald das Smartphone abzulösen soll – eine ordentliche Portion Science-Fiction war auch dabei. Im Laufe des Tages nutzten diverse Partner die Möglichkeit, vor Ort den Test als OPN Implementation Specialist beim Testcenter Pearson Vue abzulegen. Viele Teilnehmer zeigten sich beeindruckt von den vielen guten Gesprächen untereinander und schöpften die Möglichkeit zum Networking und Erfahrungsaustausch voll aus. Bei einem so dichten Programm ist es natürlich schwierig, wirklich alles mitzunehmen. Daher haben wir die Präsentationen, die auf dem Oracle Partner Day gehalten wurden, hier in der Agenda noch einmal für Sie zusammengestellt. Spannend wurde es bei der Oracle Partner Award Ceremony: Zum zweiten Mal wurden dort deutsche Partner ausgezeichnet, die sich mit besonderem Engagement und Erfolg spezialisiert haben. Nachdem es im voraus schon wilde Spekulationen gab, was sich wohl hinter der „Oracle Sports Challenge“ verbergen würde, wollen wir diese Frage auch hier auflösen: Wer nach dem vielen Sitzen Lust auf Bewegung hatte, konnte sich verschiedenen, mehr oder weniger sportlichen Herausforderungen stellen. Zu meistern waren verschiedene Geschicklichkeits-Spiele, unter anderem ein fast mannshoher „Oracle Stack“, den es in Yenga-Manier aufrecht zu erhalten galt, Torschüsse auf ein Tor, das von einem vollautomatischen Robo-Keeper bewacht wurde und eine Video-Wand mit einem spielerischen Reaktionstest rund um den „Red Stack“. Den ganzen Tag über konnten die Teilnehmer hinter QR-Codes versteckte Buchstaben sammeln und mit etwas Glück und Geschick einen von drei iPod Supernanos gewinnen. Abgerundet wurde das Programm durch Auftritte der Entertainment-Saxophonistinnen „Hot Sax Club“, der beeindruckenden Fußball-Freestyler mit ihrer Ballakrobatik, dem Close-up Magier Marc Gassert und unseren DJ, der für Stimmung sorgte.   The picture of the little screwdriver with the Allen wrench head to the right is bound to invoke a little nostalgia for those readers who were Sun customers in the late 80s. This tool was a very popular give-away: it was essential for installing and removing Multibus (you youngsters will have to look that up on Wikipedia…) cards in our systems. Back then our mid-sized systems were gargantuan: it was routine for us to schlep around a 200 lb. desk side box and 90 lb. monitor to demo a piece of software your smart phone will run better today. We were very close to the hardware, and the first thing a new field sales systems engineer had to learn was how put together a system. If you were lucky, a grizzled service engineer might run you through the process once, then threaten your health and existence should you ever screw it up so that he had to fix it. Nowadays we make it much easier to learn the ins and outs of our hardware with simulations–3D animations–that take you through the process of putting together or replacing pieces of a system. Often you can replace redundant units while the system is hot, but for heaven’s sake, you’ll want to verify that you can do that before you try it! Als Meilenstein gilt vor allem die enorme Beschleunigung, die mit Version 12.1.0.1 der Oracle Database 12c möglich wird. Diese und weitere Innovationen sorgten für viel positives Presseecho. Im Januar 2014 kamen die Partner aus ganz Deutschland nach München zum Oracle Partner Day und zur Verleihung der Oracle Excellence Awards. Wie immer war unsere Blogredaktion natürlich live vor Ort. Zu den Höhepunkten des Partner Day zählte die Key Note zur Oracle Strategie von Helene Lengler, Vice President Sales Fusion Middleware & Engineered Systems. • JUDCon 2013 Trip Report

  JUDCon (JBoss Users and Developers Conference) 2013 was held in historic Boston on June 9-11 at the Hynes Convention Center. JUDCon is the largest get together for the JBoss community, has gone global in recent years but has it's roots in Boston. The JBoss folks graciously accepted a Java EE 7 talk from me and actually referenced my talk in their own sessions. I am proud to say this is my third time speaking at JUDCon/the Red Hat Summit over the years (this was the first time on behalf of Oracle). I had great company with many of the rock stars of the JBoss ecosystem speaking such as Lincoln Baxter, Jay Balunas, Gavin King, Mark Proctor, Andrew Lee Rubinger, Emmanuel Bernard and Pete Muir. Notably missing from JUDCon were Bill Burke, Burr Sutter, Aslak Knutsen and Dan Allen. Topics included Java EE, Forge, Arquillian, AeroGear, OpenShift, WildFly, Errai/GWT, NoSQL, Drools, jBPM, OpenJDK, Apache Camel and JBoss Tools/Eclipse. My session titled "JavaEE.Next(): Java EE 7, 8, and Beyond" went very well and it was a full house. This is our main talk covering the changes in JMS 2, the Java API for WebSocket (JSR 356), the Java API for JSON Processing (JSON-P), JAX-RS 2, JPA 2.1, JTA 1.2, JSF 2.2, Java Batch, Bean Validation 1.1, Java EE Concurrency and the rest of the APIs in Java EE 7. I also briefly talked about the possibilities for Java EE 8. On Sunday night I went to one of my favorite hangouts in Boston - the exalted Middle East Club as Rolling Stone refers to it (other cool spots in an otherwise pretty boring town is "the Church"). As contradictory as it might sound to the uninitiated, the Middle East Club is possibly the best place in Boston to simultaneously get great Middle Eastern (primarily Lebanese) food and great underground metal. For folks with a bit more exposure, this is probably not contradictory at all given bands like Acrassicauda and documentaries like Heavy Metal in Baghdad. Luckily for me they were featuring a few local Thrash metal bands from the greater Boston area. It wasn't too bad considering it was primarily amateur twenty-something guys (although I'm not sure I'm a qualified critic any more since I all but stopped playing about at that age). It's great Boston has the Middle East as an incubator to keep the rock, metal, folk, jazz, blues and indie scene alive. I definitely enjoyed JUDCon/Boston and hope to be part of the conference next year again.

• SQL Saturday 194 - Exeter

  Many kudos goes to Jonathan and Annette Allen and the others on the team for confirming SQL Saturday 194 in Exeter on the 8th and 9th of March.  The event home page is here http://www.sqlsaturday.com/194/eventhome.aspx and I delighted that myself and Dave Morrison will be presenting a full day pre-con on the 8th on favourite subjects “TSQL and Internals”. Here is the full abstract : TSQL and internals - When faced with performance issues there are many lines of attack. Tuning the engine itself can get you so far, however for maximum effect you need to understand how the engine and how it translates SQL statements into performable actions. This is not a simple task, it is a massive task to deal with a multi-table join and the number of permutations can be immense. To back up this knowledge, we can create better performing TSQL and understand the impact that is has upon the engine and recognize the pitfalls and gotcha’s that exist in SQLServer. Ultimately, there is no ‘best way’ to perform a single task only many variations of ‘it depends’ , but now we can pick the most appropriate option for the required dataload. Over the years, there have been many myths and misconceptions have grown around the product, some have basis in older versions and some are just wrong. Continuing to build on the knowledge given so far these issue will be explored and broken down and proved or disproved. Finally we will look to the future and explore SQL Server 2012 and the new functionality that that brings and some of the common uses that we will be able to address. After completion of this days pre-con, attendees will have a more complete knowledge of execution plans, and how they relate to the physical and logical actions that SQLServer will be executing on their behalf. The attendees will also have a more rounded and fuller knowledge of TSQL and the implications of incorrectly defining a query. • Last week I was presented with a Microsoft MVP award in Virtual Machines – time to thank all who hel

  MVP in Virtual Machines Last week, on 1st April, I received an e-mail from Microsoft letting me know that I had been presented with a 2010 Microsoft® MVP Award for outstanding contributions in Virtual Machine technical communities during the past year.   It was an honour to be nominated, and is a great reflection on the vibrancy of the UK user group community which made this possible. Virtualisation for developers, not just IT Pros I consider it a special honour as my expertise in virtualisation is as a software developer utilising virtual machines to aid my software development, rather than an IT Pro who manages data centre and network infrastructure.  I’ve been on a minor mission over the past few years to enthuse developers in a topic usually seen as only for network admins, but which can make their life a whole lot easier once understood properly. Continuous learning is fun In 1676, the scientist Isaac Newton, in a letter to Robert Hooke used the phrase (http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/268025.html) ‘If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants’ I’m a nuclear physicist by education, so I am more than comfortable that any knowledge I have is based on the work of others.  Although far from a science, software development and IT is equally built upon the work of others. It’s one of the reasons I despise software patents. So in that sense this MVP award is a result of all the great minds that have provided virtualisation solutions for me to talk about.  I hope that I have always acknowledged those whose work I have used when blogging or giving presentations, and that I have executed my responsibility to share any knowledge gained as widely as possible. Thanks to all those who helped – a big thanks to the UK user group community I reckon this journey started in 2003 when I started attending a user group called the London .Net Users Group (http://www.dnug.org.uk) started by a nice chap called Ian Cooper. The great thing about Ian was that he always encouraged non professional speakers to take the stage at the user group, and my first ever presentation was on 30th September 2003; SQL Server CE 2.0 and the.NET Compact Framework. In 2005 Ian Cooper was on the committee for the first DeveloperDeveloperDeveloper! day, the free community conference held at Microsoft’s UK HQ in Thames Valley park in Reading.  He encouraged me to take part and so on 14th May 2005 I presented a talk previously given to the London .Net User Group on Simplifying access to multiple DB providers in .NET.  From that point on I definitely had the bug; presenting at DDD2, DDD3, groking at DDD4 and SQLBits I and after a break, DDD7, DDD Scotland and DDD8.  What definitely made me keen was the encouragement and infectious enthusiasm of some of the other DDD organisers; Craig Murphy, Barry Dorrans, Phil Winstanley and Colin Mackay. During the first few DDD events I met the Dave McMahon and Richard Costall from NxtGenUG who made it easy to start presenting at their user groups.  Along the way I’ve met a load of great user group organisers; Guy Smith-Ferrier of the .Net Developer Network, Jimmy Skowronski of GL.Net and the double act of Ray Booysen and Gavin Osborn behind what was Vista Squad and is now Edge UG. Final thanks to those who suggested virtualisation as a topic ... Final thanks have to go the people who inspired me to create my Virtualisation for Developers talk.  Toby Henderson (@holytshirt) ensured I took notice of Sun’s VirtualBox, Peter Ibbotson for being a fine sounding board at the Kew Railway over quite a few Adnam’s Broadside and to Guy Smith-Ferrier for allowing his user group to be the guinea pigs for the talk before it was seen at DDD7.  Thanks to all of you I now know much more about virtualisation than I would have thought possible and it continues to be great fun. Conclusion If this was an academy award acceptance speech I would have been cut off after the first few paragraphs, so well done if you made it this far.  I’ll be doing my best to do justice to the MVP award and the UK community.  I’m fortunate in having a new employer who considers presenting at user groups as a good thing, so don’t expect me to stop any time soon. • How to find cause of main file system going to read only mode

  Ubuntu 12.04 File system goes to readonly mode frequently. First of all I have read this question file system is going into read only mode frequently already. But I have to know if it's not caused by something else than dying hard drive. This is server provided by my client and I am just runing there some node.js workers + one node.js server and I am using mongodb. From time to time (every 20-50h) system suddenly makes filesystem read only, mongodb process fails (due read-only fs) and my node workers/server (which are started by forever) are just killed. • Home server hard drive: 186k start-stop cycles in 325 days?

  I set up a home server about a year ago, using Ubuntu server (10.04 LTS at the moment), four disks in RAID 5 for storage (WD Green 1.5 TB) and a laptop drive for the OS. Today the output of smartctl, a command line utility for checking the SMART attributes of a hard drive, tells me that the primary OS drive has had no less than 186,000 start-stop cycles in 325 days and may be nearing the end of its lifespan. The smartctl output is in "normalized values", in this case a number between 200 and 000, where 200 is "brand new" and 000 means "worn out". My disk gets 001. So I wonder what happened: 186k start/stop cycles in 7820 hours is about one start/stop per 2.5 minutes around the clock. This seems somewhat excessive for a computer that sees actual use once or twice per day. (The RAID disks are normal, averaging to one start/stop per day, as expected.) Does anyone have similar experiences, or pointers to what might be the issue here? Specifically I'd like to know Why the massive start/stop count? Do I have some sort of configuration issue? Could there be a background service that is causing trouble? Could having a laptop disk as the OS drive be part of the problem? Can anyone confirm or deny this? • Unity framework - creating & disposing Entity Framework datacontexts at the appropriate time

  Hi there, With some kindly help from StackOverflow, I've got Unity Framework to create my chained dependencies, including an Entity Framework datacontext object: using (IUnityContainer container = new UnityContainer()) { container.RegisterType<IMeterView, Meter>(); container.RegisterType<IUnitOfWork, CommunergySQLiteEntities>(new ContainerControlledLifetimeManager()); container.RegisterType<IRepositoryFactory, SQLiteRepositoryFactory>(); container.RegisterType<IRepositoryFactory, WCFRepositoryFactory>("Uploader"); container.Configure<InjectedMembers>() .ConfigureInjectionFor<CommunergySQLiteEntities>( new InjectionConstructor(connectionString)); MeterPresenter meterPresenter = container.Resolve<MeterPresenter>(); this works really well in creating my Presenter object and displaying the related view, I'm really pleased. However, the problem I'm running into now is over the timing of the creation and disposal of the Entity Framework object (and I suspect this will go for any IDisposable object). Using Unity like this, the SQL EF object "CommunergySQLiteEntities" is created straight away, as I've added it to the constructor of the MeterPresenter public MeterPresenter(IMeterView view, IUnitOfWork unitOfWork, IRepositoryFactory cacheRepository) { this.mView = view; this.unitOfWork = unitOfWork; this.cacheRepository = cacheRepository; this.Initialize(); } I felt a bit uneasy about this at the time, as I don't want to be holding open a database connection, but I couldn't see any other way using the Unity dependency injection. Sure enough, when I actually try to use the datacontext, I get this error: ((System.Data.Objects.ObjectContext)(unitOfWork)).Connection '((System.Data.Objects.ObjectContext)(unitOfWork)).Connection' threw an exception of type 'System.ObjectDisposedException' System.Data.Common.DbConnection {System.ObjectDisposedException} My understanding of the principle of IoC is that you set up all your dependencies at the top, resolve your object and away you go. However, in this case, some of the child objects, eg the datacontext, don't need to be initialised at the time the parent Presenter object is created (as you would by passing them in the constructor), but the Presenter does need to know about what type to use for IUnitOfWork when it wants to talk to the database. Ideally, I want something like this inside my resolved Presenter: using(IUnitOfWork unitOfWork = new NewInstanceInjectedUnitOfWorkType()) { //do unitOfWork stuff } so the Presenter knows what IUnitOfWork implementation to use to create and dispose of straight away, preferably from the original RegisterType call. Do I have to put another Unity container inside my Presenter, at the risk of creating a new dependency? This is probably really obvious to a IoC guru, but I'd really appreciate a pointer in the right direction thanks Toby

• What is the Fastest Way to Check for a Keyword in a List of Keywords in Delphi?

  I have a small list of keywords. What I'd really like to do is akin to: case MyKeyword of 'CHIL': (code for CHIL); 'HUSB': (code for HUSB); 'WIFE': (code for WIFE); 'SEX': (code for SEX); else (code for everything else); end; Unfortunately the CASE statement can't be used like that for strings. I could use the straight IF THEN ELSE IF construct, e.g.: if MyKeyword = 'CHIL' then (code for CHIL) else if MyKeyword = 'HUSB' then (code for HUSB) else if MyKeyword = 'WIFE' then (code for WIFE) else if MyKeyword = 'SEX' then (code for SEX) else (code for everything else); but I've heard this is relatively inefficient. What I had been doing instead is: P := pos(' ' + MyKeyword + ' ', ' CHIL HUSB WIFE SEX '); case P of 1: (code for CHIL); 6: (code for HUSB); 11: (code for WIFE); 17: (code for SEX); else (code for everything else); end; This, of course is not the best programming style, but it works fine for me and up to now didn't make a difference. So what is the best way to rewrite this in Delphi so that it is both simple, understandable but also fast? (For reference, I am using Delphi 2009 with Unicode strings.) Followup: Toby recommended I simply use the If Then Else construct. Looking back at my examples that used a CASE statement, I can see how that is a viable answer. Unfortunately, my inclusion of the CASE inadvertently hid my real question. I actually don't care which keyword it is. That is just a bonus if the particular method can identify it like the POS method can. What I need is to know whether or not the keyword is in the set of keywords. So really I want to know if there is anything better than: if pos(' ' + MyKeyword + ' ', ' CHIL HUSB WIFE SEX ') > 0 then The If Then Else equivalent does not seem better in this case being: if (MyKeyword = 'CHIL') or (MyKeyword = 'HUSB') or (MyKeyword = 'WIFE') or (MyKeyword = 'SEX') then In Barry's comment to Kornel's question, he mentions the TDictionary Generic. I've not yet picked up on the new Generic collections and it looks like I should delve into them. My question here would be whether they are built for efficiency and how would using TDictionary compare in looks and in speed to the above two lines? In later profiling, I have found that the concatenation of strings as in: (' ' + MyKeyword + ' ') is VERY expensive time-wise and should be avoided whenever possible. Almost any other solution is better than doing this.
