    I can't stand the Windows command "shell" and console window. I can't copy text off a command prompt window, the .bat syntax is retarded, I can't stand how the command buffer works, it doesn't support ANSI color codes, I could go on and on. Are there any alternatives to the Windows command prompt?

  • Use of hyphen in shell command

    I feel shy to ask this question, but if I don't I will never know, so here I am giving it a shot: I notice most shell commands use "-" for options, but I also noticed some commands do not have it. For example, to archive files in a given direct, the command is: tar czvf allmyfiles.tar.gz * However, to extract an archive, the command I learned, is: tar -zxvf allmyfiles.tar.gz Looking at both examples above, is there any significance whether to include the hyphen or not?

  • Executing commands on a Unix box from ASP .NET

    I'm in process to create a few utilities for my team to make life a bit easier working with our Unix boxes(most of them Solaris based). For example I'm creating a ASP .NET page to display the output of TOP. Also plan to be able to restart processes with the KILL -15 command. Now I wonder if there is any nice modules out the do the work for me or am I better off just going ahead with my own SSH communication? It would of course make sense building the app on the unix box directly but I'm not able to do this.

    hi, i want to partially download a ftp file. i just need to download lets say 10MB, but after skipping 100MB (for example). In php, http://php.net/manual/en/function.ftp-fget.php this function allows arbitay starting point: bool ftp_fget ( resource $ftp_stream , resource $handle , string $remote_file , int $mode [, int $resumepos = 0 ] ) however it does not allow me to set "how many bytes" i want to download.

    Hi, I have a really basic question concerning unix timestamp and mysql date. I'm trying to build a small website where users can register and fill in their birthdate. Problem is that unix starts with Jan 01 1970. Now if i calculate age for users, form dates like date('m.d.Y', $unix_from_db) and so on it will fail with users older that 40 years, right? So what would be the rigth way for doing this. Sorry, for basic question like this, but I'm inexperienced with php and mysql.

  • How to resume an ftp download at any point? (shell script, wget option)?

    hi! i want to download a huge file from an ftp server in chunks of 50-100MB each. At each point, i want to be able to set the "starting" point and the length of the chunk i want. i wont have the "previous" chunks saved locally (ie i cant ask the program to "resume" the downlaod). what is the best way of going about that? i use wget mostly, but would something else be better?

    What I'm planning to do is a) parse a file for some lines matching a regular expression b) store the match in some sort of database / file so I don't have to do the parsing again and again c) call another program passing the matches as arguments While I can imagine how to do a) and c), I'm a little bit unsure about b). The matches are of the form key:attribute1:attribute2:attribute3 where attribute 2 may be optional. I'm thinking of storing the results in a simple database but the problem is the database needs to available on a number of Unix platform for the program to work. Are there any (simple) databases which can be found on any Unix platforms? Or should I use some sort of index-sequential file?

    How can I find out to which filepath (or alias) a certain command input will point to, in the Windows command prompt? Specifically Windows XP, info on other versions also appreciated! On Unix systems I simply use: $ which commandname /a/commandname Or: $ type -a commandname commandname is aliased to `/b/commandname' commandname is /a/commandname commandname is /b/commandname And I am simply looking for the equivalent in the Windows Shell (specifically Win XP). I came to this general question, from a specific issue: I had installed robocopy.exe (version 026), but the command line "robocopy" always triggers version 010, and I would like to determine where this command points to, in order to correct this mistake.

When I kill the application's process for the user (via RDP) the application exits, but never restarts. Ideas?

    Hi everyone, In my terminal window (using Max OS X) my shell is bash. However when I run a command in PHP via shell_exec or backtick operators I see that PHP is using the Bourne Shell (sh). Here's an example of what I'm seeing: From within my terminal window: $ echo $0 - bash Also if I call php as follows: $ php -r "echo shell_exec('echo $0');" -bash However, if I create a script called test.php with the following: <?php echo shell_exec('echo $0'); ?> And then run test php I get the following: $ php test.php sh I'm wanting to use the bash shell when calling shell_exec - why is it choosing the Bourne shell and can I force it to use bash?     Disclaimer: I'm totally new to shell scripting, but have quite a bit of experience in other languages like PHP and Obj-C. I'm writing my first daemon script. Here are the goals: I want it to run in the background I want it to be triggered by an init.d script that includes start/stop/restart commands I want each process in a loop to trigger its own subprocess. When the parent process kicked off by the init.d script is killed, I want the subprocesses to die as well. Essentially, I'm looking for the same kind of behavior that appears to be very common among software like apache, spamd, dovecot, etc. But, based on my research, I haven't found a single, simple answer as to how this kind of thing is achieved. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    I have a very strange shell extension folder which I just can't get rid of. How can I get rid of this? I already downloaded ShellExViewer, but I cannot find any extension called "X64", nor are the other extensions which reside in that folder anywhere in the Viewer. I am also not able to find that folder in the registry, but that's probably because I don't know where to look. How can I edit this so the contents of the folder are put in the "default" menu and not in a subfolder?

I got a great solution, but it presented another question: How can I map a key command in my .vimrc that involves piping output in the shell? As a simple example, let's say I wanted to pipe the results of ls -a to a new MacVim window. From the Vim command line I can enter !ls -a | mvim -, and the results will appear in a new window. Great! Now, I add that to my .vimrc: nmap <Leader>r :w !ls | mvim<CR> Vim now throws an error every time I try to source my .vimrc, which reads as follows: E492: Not an editor command: mvim<CR> Any ideas on how to overcome this?

My crontab looks something like this: 0 1 * * 1-7 /bin/bash -l -c "cd ~/jobs/rake && rake reports:create >> ~/jobs/logs/cron.log" Ruby on my account is provided by RVM, which is loaded via ~/.bashrc (before the no-interaction check): # load RVM env [[ -s $HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm ]] && source $HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm # If not running interactively, don't do anything [ -z "$PS1" ] && return # ... rest of logic Time and again, this task fails to run since RVM isn't loaded when the task is called (uses system's /usr/bin/ruby instead), and gem dependencies are missing. How can I make crontab load my shell environment before executing my scheduled jobs? thanks.
