  • Structure gameobjects and call events

    - by waco001
I'm working on a 2D tile based game in which the player interacts with other game objects (chests, AI, Doors, Houses etc...). The entire map will be stored in a file which I can read. When loading the tilemap, it will find any tile with the ID that represents a gameobject and store it in a hashmap (right data structure I think?). private static HashMap<Integer, Class<GameObject>> gameObjects = new HashMap<Integer, Class<GameObject>>(); How exactly would I go about calling, and checking for events? I figure that I would just call the update, render and input methods of each gameobject using the hashmap. Should I got towards a Minecraft/Bukkit approach (sorry only example I can think of), where the user registers an event, and it gets called whenever that event happens, and where should I go as in resources to learn about that type of programming, (Java, LWJGL). Or should I just loop through the entire hashmap looking for an event that fits? Thanks waco

  • New Zealand Windows Phone 7 Dev Training Events

This week Ben Gracewood, Chris Klug, Keith Patton and myself delivered three Windows Phone 7 developer training events in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland. The agenda was packed with more than 5 1/2 hours worth of content and we met and interacted with more than 100 motivated kiwis dev looking to build applications for the new Windows Phone 7 platform. Below is a 15min video that I have posted to Channel 9 of the content that was delivered at the sessions: For our presentations we drew...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Approaching events #mstc11 #ppws #sqlbits

    - by Marco Russo (SQLBI)
The spring season is always full of events and I’m just preparing for a number of them. First of all, we are getting very good interest for the PowerPivot Workshop in Copenhagen on 21-22 March 2011. Tomorrow (Friday March 4) will be the last day to take advantage of the Early Bird rate for this date. We will also participate to an evening meeting of local user groups on March 21 in Copenhagen, more news about this in the next few days. Other scheduled dates are in Dublin (28-29 March 2011) and in...(read more)

  • Who should map physical keys to abstract keys?

    - by Paul Manta
How do you bridge the gap between the library's low-level event system and your engine's high-level event system? (I'm not necessarily talking about key events, but also about quit events.) At the top level of my event system, I send out KeyPressedEvents, KeyRelesedEvents and others of this kind. These high-level events only contain the abstract values of the keys (they don't say that Space way pressed, but that the JumpKey was pressed, for example). Whose responsibility should it be to map the "JumpKey" to an actual key on the keyboard?

  • Participating in 3 SQL events in 8 days

    - by AaronBertrand
Well, 8 days not including lead and lag travel time. A quick summary of the three events, and the flights it took to get me to each: SQL Saturday #105 - Dublin, Ireland Flights on March 21st: Providence -> Philadelphia (236 miles) Philadelphia -> Dublin (3,260 miles) Time zone change: +4 when we got there, plus Daylight Saving Time kicked in, so +5 after the event. I spoke at this event, and manned the SQL Sentry booth with cohort Scott Fallen. This event was a fantastic SQL Saturday - very...(read more)

  • Google page events monitoring and analysis

    - by Homunculus Reticulli
I have read the Google page event documentation, but I am not sure I understand it correctly. I am new to Google analytics, and I have two questions: Once I have google analytics enabled for my site (i.e. I have inserted the tracking code in my pages etc), do I need to set anything else up (at the Google end - i.e. in my Google analytics account) It is not clear to me how the event data particularly, relating to how the data can be aggregated and analyzed. For instance, if I want to track an event under category category for click action action, I will use the following code snippet: <a href="some-uri.htm" onclick="_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'category', 'action', 'label']);">Do Something</a> For the sake of simplicity, lets say I am interested in monitoring click events in my header and footer, and I want to find which pages the header and or footer is clicked most often. How would I set things up so that I can analyze the header/footer clicks aggregated at the page level?

  • Extended Events demos on Microsoft Virtual Academy

    - by extended_events
I had an opportunity recently to contribute a presentation to the Microsoft Virtual Academy as part of the Mission Critical Confidence using SQL Server 2012 course offering. The MVA offers you a myriad of free training opportunities, so I encourage anyone who is interested in expanding your knowledge to take advantage of this offering. For those of you who don’t want to invest the time to go through the whole course, you can access my presentation here. I cover the following topics: Integration of Extended Events into AlwaysOn troubleshooting. Troubleshooting Login failures using client/server correlation. Troubleshooting query performance issues using client/server correlation. I’m not sure how long content is made available on MVA, I got the impression that it would be removed as some point in the future, but should be there for at lease several months. - Mike

  • Should I use events in this case?

    - by joon
I'm creating a video player, like a custom YouTube player. All of the GUI elements (progress bar, video player, play button, ...) are different classes, but I obviously need them to communicate. When the progress bar is clicked, or the slider is moved, it needs to send a "seek(x)" command to the video player. Similarly, the video player needs to update the progressbar every frame. Currently I'm doing this by having almost all elements have a link to each other. So when I create the progress bar, I'm telling it where the video player is. But after a while this becomes more and more complicated, and I'm wondering if events would be a better way to do this. Or a main controller class that has all the connections. What should I do?

  • In C#, what thread will Events be handled in?

    - by Ben
Hi, I have attempted to implement a producer/consumer pattern in c#. I have a consumer thread that monitors a shared queue, and a producer thread that places items onto the shared queue. The producer thread is subscribed to receive data...that is, it has an event handler, and just sits around and waits for an OnData event to fire (the data is being sent from a 3rd party api). When it gets the data, it sticks it on the queue so the consumer can handle it. When the OnData event does fire in the producer, I had expected it to be handled by my producer thread. But that doesn't seem to be what is happening. The OnData event seems as if it's being handled on a new thread instead! Is this how .net always works...events are handled on their own thread? Can I control what thread will handle events when they're raised? What if hundreds of events are raised near-simultaneously...would each have its own thread? Thank in advance! Ben

  • What is the equivalent of .NET events in Ruby?

    - by Gishu
The problem is very simple. An object needs to notify some events that might be of interest to observers. When I sat to validate a design that I cooked up now in Ruby just to validate it.. I find myself stumped as to how to implement the object events. In .Net this would be a one-liner.. .Net also does handler method signature verification, etc. e.g. // Object with events public delegate void HandlerSignature(int a); public event HandlerSignature MyEvent; public event HandlerSignature AnotherCriticalEvent; // Client MyObject.MyEvent += new HandlerSignature(MyHandlerMethod); // MyHandlerMethod has same signature as delegate Is there an EventDispatcher module or something that I am missing that I can strap on to a Ruby class ? Hoping for an answer that plays along with Ruby's principle of least surprise. An event would be the name of the event plus a queue of [observer, methodName] objects that need to be invoked when the event takes place.

  • Why are custom events not working for me? (Mootools)

    - by John McCollum
    I've been learning Mootools, but I'm having problems firing custom events. I'm sure it must be something simple, but I can't see it for the life of me. I wrote a simple class to nudge some list items using Fx.Tween. It works perfectly, except that the custom events aren't being triggered, no matter what I try. <script type="text/javascript"> var Pusher = new Class({ Implements: [Events,Options], options: { elements: [] }, initialize: function(options){ this.setOptions(options); this.attachListeners(this.options.elements); }, attachListeners: function(elements){ $$(elements).each(function(el){ $(el).addEvent('mouseover', this.pushIn.bind(el)) .addEvent('mouseout', this.pushOut.bind(el)); }, this); }, pushIn: function(){ this.fireEvent('in'); this.set('tween', {duration: 'short'}); this.tween('paddingLeft', '50px'); }, pushOut: function(){ this.fireEvent('out'); this.set('tween', {duration: 'short'}); this.tween('paddingLeft', '0px'); } }); window.addEvent('domready', function(){ var p = new Pusher({ elements: $$('li') }); p.addEvent('in', function(){ alert('in'); }); p.addEvent('out', function(){ alert('out'); }); }); </script> And in the HTML: <ul id="mylist"> <li>1</li> <li>2</li> <li>3</li> <li>4</li> </ul> I've also tried the following: window.addEvent('domready', function(){ var p = new Pusher({ elements: $$('li'), onIn: function(){ alert('in'); }, onOut: function(){ alert('out'); } }); }); What am I doing wrong?

  • OOW 2013 Summary for Fusion Middleware Architects & Administrators by Simon Haslam

    - by JuergenKress
OOW 2013 Summary for Fusion Middleware Architects & Administrators by Simon Haslam This September during Oracle OpenWorld 2013 the weather in San Francisco, as you see can from the photo, was exceptionally sunny. The dramatic final few days of the Americas Cup sailing competition, being held every day in the bay, coincided with the conference and meant that there was almost a holiday feel to the whole event. Here's my annual round-up of what I think was most interesting at OpenWorld 2013 for Fusion Middleware architects and administrators; I hope you find it useful and if you think I've missed something please add a comment! WebLogic and Cloud Application Foundation (CAF) The big WebLogic release of the year has already happened a few months ago with 12.1.2 so I won't duplicate that here. Will Lyons discussed the WebLogic and Coherence roadmap which essentially is that 12.1.3 will probably be released to coincide with SOA 12c next year and that 12.1.4, the next feature-rich WebLogic release, is more likely to be in 2015. This latter release will probably include full Java EE 7 support, have enhancements for multi-tenancy and further auto-scaling features to support increased density (i.e. more WebLogic usage for the same amount of hardware). There's a new Oracle Virtual Assembly Builder (OVAB) out already and an Oracle Traffic Director (OTD) 12c release round the corner too. Also of relevance to administrators is that Oracle has increased the support lifetime for Fusion Middleware 11g (e.g. WebLogic 10.3.6) so that Premier Support will now run to the end of 2018 and Extended Support until 2021 - this should remove any Oracle-driven pressure to upgrade at least. Java Mission Control Java Mission Control (JMC) is the HotSpot Java 7 version of JRockit 6 Mission Control, a very nice performance monitoring tool from Oracle's BEA acquisition. Flight Recorder is a feature built into the JVM which records diagnostic events into, typically, a circular buffer which can then be used for historical analysis, particularly in the case of a JVM crash or hang. It's been available separately for WebLogic only for perhaps a year now but, more significantly, it now includes JVM events and was bundled in with JDK7 Update 40 a few weeks ago. I attended a couple of interesting Java One sessions on JMC/Flight Recorder and have to say it's looking really good - it has all the previous JRMC features except for memory leak detector, plus some enhancements around operative sets and ECID filtering I think. Marcus also showed how you could add your own events into flight recorder by building your own event class - they are then available for graphing alongside all the other events in JMC. This uses a currently an unsupported/undocumented API, but it's also the same one that WebLogic uses for WLDF events so I imagine it is stable. I'm not sure quite whether this would be useful to custom applications, as opposed to infrastructure services or ISV packaged applications, but it was a very nice demonstration. I've been testing JMC / FR enabling on several environments recently and my confidence is growing - it feels robust and I think could very soon be part of my standard builds. • Not all events appear in Nagios history (archive)

    - by Lars
in the "Host & Service history" of my check_mk interface I can see various events, but a lot of events are missing. On the default interface at "View Alert History For This Service" or in the logfiles /var/log/nagios/archives/*.log the same issue: I can see many events of the last days, but not all of them. In the /etc/nagios/nagios.cfg the options log_event_handlers, log_initial_status and log_passive_checks are set to 0, the other log_... options are set to 1. I don't think that any of these options causing the problem that not all events are logged. What could cause this problem?

  • Autohotkey numpad mouse script, events propagating to some programs, but not others

    - by jhnclvr
I have an issue when trying out one of the example scripts in the autohotkey docs: http://www.autohotkey.com/docs/scripts/NumpadMouse.htm When a program like Notepad++ gets focus, the script does not seem to receive key events, and instead the key events seem to be consumed by Notepad++. Is there a modification to the script that would allow it to receive the events no matter what window was open?

  • add_shown & add_hiding ModalPopupExtender Events

    - by Yousef_Jadallah
        In this topic, I’ll discuss the Client events we usually need while using ModalPopupExtender. The add_shown fires when the ModalPopupExtender had shown and add_hiding fires when the user cancels it by CancelControlID,note that it fires before hiding the modal. They are useful in many cases, for example may you need to set focus to specific Textbox when the user display the modal, or if you need to reset the controls values inside the Modal after it has been hidden. To declare Client event either in pageLoad javascript function or you can attach the function by Sys.Application.add_load like this: Sys.Application.add_load(modalInit); function modalInit() { var modalPopup = $find('mpeID'); modalPopup.add_hiding(onHiding); } function onHiding(sender, args) { } .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; }   I’ll use the first way in the current example. So lets start with the illustration:   1- In this example am using simple panel which contain UserName and Password Textboxes besides submit and cancel buttons, this Panel will be used as PopupControlID in the ModalPopupExtender : <asp:Panel ID="panModal" runat="server" Height="180px" Width="300px" style="display:none" CssClass="ModalWindow"> <table width="100%" > <tr> <td> User Name </td> <td> <asp:TextBox ID="txtName" runat="server"></asp:TextBox> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Password </td> <td> <asp:TextBox ID="txtPassword" runat="server" TextMode="Password"></asp:TextBox> </td> </tr> </table> <br /> <asp:Button ID="btnSubmit" runat="server" Text="Submit" /> <asp:Button ID="btnCancel" runat="server" Text="Cancel" /> </asp:Panel>   You can use this simple style for the Panel : <style type="text/css"> .ModalWindow { border: solid; border-width:3px; background:#f0f0f0; } </style> .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; }   2- Create the view button (TargetControlID) as you know this contain the ID of the element that activates the modal popup: <asp:Button ID="btnView" runat="server" Text="View" /> .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; $get('<%=txtName.ClientID%>').focus();   });   $find('ModalPopupExtender1').add_hiding(function() { alert('add_hiding event fires'); $get('<%=txtName.ClientID%>').value = ""; $get('<%=txtPassword.ClientID%>').value = "";   • Post build events using ROBOCOPY instead of XCOPY

    - by Vizioz Limited
I don't know about you, but for a long time I have used XCOPY statements in my Visual Studio post build events to copy my Umbraco files from the project folders to the local version of the website associated with the project. For the last few months we have been building a website framework for a client, who has subsequently sold the site to 5 clients, each with a different skin and some variations in their functional requirements. So, we now have a single source solutions, that builds and copies the site files into 5 seperate local websites, which enables us to easily test them all, what we had found was that this process was starting to slow up our build process and was reaching 30-45 seconds on a high spec Quad core machine (and slower on others)Today I asked Colin to create seperate Solution Configurations within Visual Studio so that while we were developing we could target a single site, and when we wanted to test all sites, we could target "ALL" and the Post Build script would then copy the files to all sites. This worked well, and with a couple of other optimisations, our build was now taking about 10 seconds for a single site. Then Colin came across ROBOCOPY and suggested that maybe this would be a suitable alternative to XCOPY, well, I had not heard of it.. (shock horror some of you shout, some I am sure like me, are also wondering what it is!)ROBOCOPY is new in Windows Vista & Windows 7 (you can also download it for XP & Windows 2003) and it has a lot of additional features, the two that were most interesting to us were:/MIR = Mirror a folder tree/XD = Exclude Directories/NP = No Progress (i.e. it does not give you a chart of it's results, which just fills up your Output window!)So, we set about implementing ROBOCOPY, we decided to use the /MIR switch on all folders that we knew were always stored in our project folders:- images- css- masterpages- xsltAnd for other files we just used the straight robocopy functionality. We also decided to exclude all the .SVN directories using the /XD switch and finally we added the /NP switch as mentioned above. The beauty of all of this, is the /MIR functionality, as this means that only files that have changed will be copied across which greatly speeds up the process, especially on the images folders which previously copied across on every build, now, if we add a new image to the project it will be copied across automatically and then never again, unless we change it of course! The build time now for all sites is approximately 4 seconds and for a single site, 2 seconds, I would highly recommend the time to make the same optimisations to your build processes if you have not done so already.

I'm making a simple 2D game for iPhone. Think of the game as a ball on the screen that goes up while the user is touching the screen and falls down when the user stops touching the screen. The ball starts moving up in touchesBegan:withEvent and starts moving down in touchesEnded:withEvent. This works fine almost all the time. However on occasion the ball will keep moving up after the user stops touching... or the ball will keep moving down while the user is touching. Why is this happening? Just fyi the ball is drawn on a UIWindow. The taps are handled by a UIImageview subclass that's clearColor and takes up the entire screen. This "touchLayer" is also moved to the front of the window in the game loop. Any idea why this control scheme occasionally fails? Perhaps the touch events just aren't firing? Or they're fired out of order? Cheers!

  • Using Behavior Trees and Events together

    - by weichsem
I am beginning to work with behavior trees and am unsure how events should be handled within the tree. Lets say we have a space game where the player is dogfighting with a handful of other ships, some friendly some not. The player destroys a ship and the rest of the hostile ships should then start to retreat. How was should the shipWasDestroyed event effect the other ship's behavior trees so that they start running the retreat behavior? One way I could think of doing this is have all the conditions I care about be high level nodes that effectively state change the ship. This would mean I'd have to check all of these state change conditions on every frame the behavior tree was run, even if they are very rare occurrences. I'd prefer not doing this for performance and complexity reasons. From looking at the Halo papers on behavior trees it seems that they handled this by dynamically placing nodes into the tree when the event occurred. It seems like calculating where the new node should go could be problematic depending on the current state of the running behavior. How is this normally handled?

  • Access functions from user control without events?

    - by BornToCode
I have an application made with usercontrols and a function on main form that removes the previous user controls and shows the desired usercontrol centered and tweaked: public void DisplayControl(UserControl uControl) I find it much easier to make this function static or access this function by reference from the user control, like this: MainForm mainform_functions = (MainForm)Parent; mainform_functions.DisplayControl(uc_a); You probably think it's a sin to access a function in mainform, from the usercontrol, however, raising an event seems much more complex in such case - I'll give a simple example - let's say I raise an event from usercontrol_A to show usercontrol_B on mainform, so I write this: uc_a.show_uc_b+= (s,e) => { usercontrol_B uc_b = new usercontrol_B(); DisplayControl(uc_b); }; Now what if I want usercontrol_B to also have an event to show usercontrol_C? now it would look like this: uc_a.show_uc_b+= (s,e) => { usercontrol_B uc_b = new usercontrol_B(); DisplayControl(uc_b); uc_b.show_uc_c += (s2,e2) => {usercontrol_C uc_c = new usercontrol_C(); DisplayControl(uc_c);} }; THIS LOOKS AWFUL! The code is much simpler and readable when you actually access the function from the usercontrol itself, therefore I came to the conclusion that in such case it's not so terrible if I break the rules and not use events for such general function, I also think that a readable usercontrol that you need to make small adjustments for another app is preferable than a 100% 'generic' one which makes my code look like a pile of mud. What is your opinion? Am I mistaken?

  • Vaadin Calendar events not shown if overnight [migrated]

    - by B_B
In my vaadin project there is the possibility to create events that are shown by the calendar. It does works, except when the event is overnight, let's say the night from 23th to 24th, and the calendar shows as only day the 24th. In this case the part of the event that belongs to the 24th is supposed to be shown, but it is not. When I switch to weekly view, the event is shown properly. Here is the function where I get the data and use a container for the calendar: /* Fill Calendar from database */ void updateData() { final BeanItemContainer<TypeReservationEvent> container = new BeanItemContainer<TypeReservationEvent>(TypeReservationEvent.class); Map<String, Object> parameters = new HashMap<String, Object>(); parameters.put("roomParent",chosenRoom); String query = "SELECT DISTINCT res FROM EntityReservation res, EntityRoom r, EntityTable rt WHERE res.tableId = rt.id " + "AND rt.roomParent =:roomParent"; reservationList = facade.list(query, parameters); for(EntityReservation rt : reservationList) { container.addBean(new TypeReservationEvent(rt)); } container.sort(new Object[]{"start"}, new boolean[]{true}); cal.setContainerDataSource(container, "caption", "description", "start", "end", "styleName"); // Force calendar to refresh if(selectCalViewType.getValue() == chooseWeeklyView) { setViewType(calViewType.DAILY); setViewType(calViewType.WEEKLY); } else if (selectCalViewType.getValue() == chooseDailyView) { setViewType(calViewType.WEEKLY); setViewType(calViewType.DAILY); } } TIA

  • An XEvent a Day (14 of 31) – A Closer Look at Predicates

    - by Jonathan Kehayias
When working with SQL Trace, one of my biggest frustrations has been the limitations that exist in filtering.  Using sp_trace_setfilter to establish the filter criteria is a non-trivial task, and it falls short of being able to deliver complex filtering that is sometimes needed to simplify analysis.  Filtering of trace data was performed globally and applied to the trace affecting all of the events being collected.  Extended Events introduces a much better system of filtering using...(read more)
