• SQL Server: Can INFORMATION_SCHEMA Tell Me When a SQL Object Was Created?

  Given: I added a non-nullable foreign key to a table. I settled on a way to populate the foreign key with default values. I checked in both changes to a re-runnable DB creation script. Other developers ran this script, and now they have the foreign key populated with default values on their developer machines. A few days later however... I changed my mind. Now I'd like to populate the foreign key's default values differently. My Question: Can SQL Server or INFORMATION_SCHEMA tell me when SQL objects were created? Ideally, I'd like to drop and re-add the foreign key if it was created before a certain date/time. Any help or alternative strategies would be greatly appreciated. Obviously, I'd like to avoid going to each developer's cube, asking them to drop the foreign key manually.

• Can the Perl compiler tell me if I have an unchecked exception in my code?

  Is there a way in Perl to declare that a method can throw an error (or die)? EDIT: What interests me the most is a way to get the compiler or IDE to tell me I have an unchecked exception somewhere in my code. I always loved how in Java, a method could handle an Exception and/or throw it. The method signature allows to put "throws MyException", so a good IDE/compiler would know that if you use said method somewhere in your code, you'd have to check for the Exception or declare your function to "throws" the Exception further. I'm unable to find something alike in Perl. A collegue of mine wrote a method which "dies" on incorrect input, but I forget to eval-if($@) it... offcourse the error was only discovered while a user was running the application. (offcourse I doubt if there is any existing IDE that could find these kind of things for Perl, but atleast perl -cw should be able to, no?)

  I have a method, which takes much time to execute first time. But after several invocations, it takes about 30 times less time. So, to make my application respond to user interaction faster, I "warm-up" this method (5 times) with some sample data on initialization of application. But this increases app start-up time. I read, that JVM's can optimize and compile my java code to native, thus speeding things up. I wanted to know - maybe there is some way to explicitly tell JVM that I want this method to be compiled on startup of application?

• How do I tell eclipse to auto-generate or retain stubs when it starts and does a clean build?

  I'm working on a Java application that uses JavaSpace. We're developing this in Eclipse. There are a couple instances where we are inserting code into the JavaSpace to do some more advanced space notification logic. Doing this requires that we generate stubs for the classes used within the JavaSpace. We use an external script to generate these stubs. The problem is that whenever Eclipse restarts, it does a clean build of the whole application. When it does this, it deletes all the stubs and we have to regenerate them. I would like to find a way to either tell Eclipse not to remove the _stub.class and _skel.class files within the bin folder where the .class files are placed. Either that, or somehow teach Eclipse to generate the stub files whenever it does a rebuild (and I suppose whenever the source files from which the stubs are generated changes). How can I do one of these, so that we don't have to manually build the stubs every time we start up Eclipse?

• Why is IE7 hiding my overflow when, as far as I can tell, all it's containing elements have overflow

  If you visit the site in question (haddongrant.com) and go to the Artwork section, if you click on an image and view it's stack in Safari, Chrome or Firefox you'll notice the images extend up and down the page, eventually disappearing over the edge. This is what you should be seeing. In Internet Explorer 7, however, the overflow gets cut off at some point before it ever gets to the end of the page. The problem is... I can't tell where! I've had a look and every containing element should show overflow. I don't know why IE7 isn't. Does anyone have any ideas where I might need to add an overflow-y:visible;?

  Please forgive my ignorance, I'm completely new when it comes to winforms programming. I'm using a third-party class that spawns an instance of Internet Explorer. This class has a property, hWnd, that returns the hWnd of the process. Later on down the line, I may want to reuse the instance of the application if it still exists, so I need to tell my helper class to attach to it. Prior to doing that, I'd like to know if the given hWnd is still valid, otherwise I'll spawn another instance. How can I do this in C# & .NET 3.5? Thanks for the help and I apologize if my winforms nomenclature is all wacky.. haha Ian

• How can I tell NetBeans to use the latest available version of a JAR for a library?

  I have a Netbeans project with a library defined which includes several JARs. These JARs are versioned like lib\blah\com.blah.wibble.jar_0.6.1.201004161543 . These are nightly builds from another project so that version changes often. I know I can point NetBeans at the specific JARs with the version name, but this means that every time I get a new version I have to update the NetBeans library. I can also strip the version name from the JARs, but this makes it hard to track down bugs. "What version of the blah JARs?" is usually the second thing we ask when we find a bug. Is it possible to tell Netbeans to use included com.blah.wibble.jar_[??????] where ???? is some sort of automatic pointer to use the latest available version?

  Here's the thing. I have a button that, depending on the scenario, will behave, look and have different text. Here's how it, roughly, looks like at the moment: - if params[:param_A] && @statement_A %span.button.cancel_button{attribute: "value_B"} - if @statement_B = t('locale_A') - else = t('locale_B') - elsif params[:param_A] %span.button.cancel_button{attribute: "value_A"} - if @statement_B = t('locale_A') - else = t('locale_B') There's also a CSS class both buttons should have IF statement_B is true. So it is a mess. And I recently read about the "Tell, don't ask" principle which I liked very much, so I'd love to apply it here... but I'm not sure how. I know I could make a helper, but I'd like to stay away from them because reasons (I really have some valid reasons to do so, but those are beyond the scope of this question). I can resort to that as a last resource, but would rather find another solution.

Here is what I am trying to do in pesudo code. Each Bubble has a Column and Row Property. If The bubble subtracts one from its Column property and finds the same Color bubble, it should Select it then Subtract -1 and see if two bubbles away there is also a same color bubble. If there is then subtract -2 and so on. So What I am trying to do is var test= _theBubbles.TakeWhile((i, s) => i.BubbleColor== bubble.BubbleColor)//Then somehow tell it to do bubble.Column-s and then Subtract s from bubble.Column So the Idea is to keep looking down the column till the bubble isnt the same

• How to tell the MinGW linker not to export all symbols?

  Hello, I'm building a Windows dynamic library using the MinGW toolchain. To build this library I'm statically linking to other 2 which offer an API and I have a .def file where I wrote the only symbol I want to be exported in my library. The problem is that GCC is exporting all of the symbols including the ones from the libraries I'm linking to. Is there anyway to tell the linker just to export the symbols in the def file? I know there is the option --export-all-symbols but there seems not to be the opposite to it. Right now the last line of the build script has this structure: g++ -shared CXXFLAGS DEFINES INCLUDES -o library.dll library.cpp DEF_FILE \ OBJECT_FILES LIBS -Wl,--enable-stdcall-fixup EDIT: In the docs about the linker it says that --export-all-symbols is the default behavior and that it's disabled when you don't use that option explicitly if you provide a def file, except when it doesn't; the symbols in 3rd party libs are being exported anyway. EDIT: Adding the option --exclude-libs LIBS doesn't keep their symbols from being exported either.

• How can I tell what files are currently open by a process (i.e. my app)?

  I am using a Lucene.Net index and want to give the user an option to move the index, but am having trouble closing it down so the directory/contents can be moved (I keep getting access denied exceptions). I need to be able to have some more information so I can debug this problem, such as being able to tell what files are currently open, and as much information about each use as possible. Alternatively, is there any way to simply force close a bunch of files so they can be moved? This would make things a lot easier to solve.

  I have an application that needs to behave differently if run directly from the linux console. So if a user connects with SSH to run FooBar, or the user walks over to the console and logs in directly to run FooBar, I want it to do something different. What C API do I need to call to tell the difference between these two scenarios? I was thinking I'd have to look at the "tty/pts" information (such as what I see when I run "ps axf"), but I'm not certain if that is the best solution, nor what API to call to get that information.   For those unfamiliar with JNotify, this is a library which provides an easy way to monitor events in a directory. For instance, when a file gets deleted in the selected folder, the method "fileDeleted" gets called, along with a few parameters. Here's an example of the fileDeleted method: public void fileDeleted(int wd, String rootPath, String name) { print("deleted " + rootPath + " : " + name); } Now, I would like to know if the deleted file was a file or directory. My usual approach is to create a new File object with the given path, and use the methods isFile() and isDirectory() However, since this file is already deleted, these methods always return false. So here's my concrete question: I have the path to a deleted file or directory, how can I tell wether it was a file or a directory? Is there a workaround to this? What's the best practice to do here?   I have a following Qt code: QVBoxLayout* box = new QVBoxLayout; label = new QLabel(); // will be set later dynamically box->addWidget (label); Text in label will be set later. The problem is that when label resizes, it resizes QVBoxLayout, and it resizes other neighboring widgets. I don't want to make a label or layout fixed width. Because I want them to resize with a whole window. Is it possible to tell label to take all the place that it has in layout, but not more?

  I've been browsing through all of the CSS related cross-browser questions trying to troubleshoot my IE styling issues with no luck. Can anyone tell me how to fix my homepage styles so that it displays the same in IE as it currently does in Firefox? I've used Firebug (probably why it looks good in Firefox) but I can't find any tools for IE that will let me change the stylesheet real time. I'm just as interested in the process of figuring out this answer as I am in the answer itself so posting the steps you took to figure it out would be beneficial. • How do I tell gdb how long my zero-length array is?

  Slightly oxymoronic title! Bonus points for Xcode answer but it's a gdb question. If I have a standard, statically sized array gdb will print all its elements [and Xcode will let me browse through it] but if I have a zero length array, it won't, because it doesn't know. Obviously I can print the array indexes one by one, but I'd like a dump of the whole thing. How do I tell gdb how much space I have allocated for the array to allow it to print the array (or to allow Xcode to view the array). Is it even possible?
