  • Allow access to my server.

    I have a server, did some of the programming myself. It ison my home network, but I need to be able to access it from anywhere over the internet. I have done the port forwarding like I am supposed to, but I still cant get to it from an outside computer. It just displays Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. I don't know what else to do. I am on a Linksys WRT54G v8 router running ddWRT v24 micro firmware.

  • Linux/Gentoo: KDM, startx & session problem

    I'm using startx in my .bashrc file to start X (I'm using KDE 4.3.4) when I login at tty1 instead of using a display manager like KDM. Now the problem is since KDM is not running I'm not able to use the shut down button from the KDE menu (because it needs root privileges to do so, of course) and some other features are gone as well. Is there a way to start KDM when I run startx in my .bashrc, like just running KDM in the background? The point is that I want no login display, so I'm sure there must be a way to just start KDM silently. Regards & I hope for answers!

  • Mouse button and keypress counter for Linux?

    I would like to have some kind of statistic of my daily mouse/keyboard usage to help me make my keyboard layout a little bit more efficient. There is already an question about how to do this on windows, but I would like to know I anyone is aware if this is possible under linux. Another thing I already found is key-mon, a little program for screencasts that displays your mouse and keyboard presses on the screen, which would help me achieve what I want with a little bit of python coding by myself.   • grouping two sites under domain and sub domain

    I have 2 websites a main website hosted at fasthosts and an e-commerce website hosted at Vidahost. I want to combine both websites under the same domain set. Main site would be www.mydomain.com Store site would be shop.mydomain.com I want to keep the directory path showing on the shop subdomain so what was previously www.mystore.com/product/hat would become shop.mydomain.com/product/hat How can I accomplish this, have already created the subdomain on fasthosts and setup web forwarding to the store but the directory paths do not show.

  • port is not open in torrent client even though it was forwarded

    I have a problem with port forwarding with my torrent, port check tool says that it open, the firewall exception as well. But with the test by the client not say so. I don't know why.   • Duplicate xserver

    When I start my ubuntu pc, just before my login, I receive a message that says "An xserver is already started in display :0. Would you like to try starting xserver in another virtual workspace?". Now If I answer 'No' the message appears again and again. If I say 'Yes' It goes to gnome desktop in virtual desktop 9 [Ctrl+Alt+F9] It was previously available only in [Ctrl+Alt+F7] but now available in both F7 and F9. Now I assume that there are two instances of xserver both in [Ctrl+Alt+F7] and [Ctrl+Alt+F9]. I think by killing one instance of xserver manaually I can disable the message. How do I do this?     I'm trying to remap a bunch of my keys and I'm running into trouble. I'm currently trying to use xmodmap but failing. Maybe there is a better way? Can someone explain how I can best remap ctrl-j on the keyboard to produce ctrl-c? It's not as easy as just making j=c. I want this happen only when I'm holding down ctrl.

  • How can I disable DPMS temporarily in X under a modern linux?

    Historically if you wanted to control blanking and DPMS in X, you could do it with xset. Issuingxset -dpms on my laptop results in xset q returning "DPMS is Disabled", as it should. But my screens still turn off. I'm running an up-to-date Arch Linux using KMS with integrated Intel graphics, I'm not running GNOME or willing to use anything that needs something like it. I am however stuck with DBUS and HAL. I've tried fiddling with the various timeouts, and it hasn't helped - specifically, changing the timeouts seems to be able to turn off the screen sooner, but not stop it from turning off :) This makes me suspect that there's something else overriding the setting. Is there any way to get xset to actually function as it used to, or at least stop lying to me? Note that I don't want to permanently disable DPMS or blanking - just to be able to control it when I need to.

  • Setting up xpra for client use in OS X

    I've been trying to get xpra to run on OS X for the last few days to connect to my Ubuntu server. Note that there's a GUI for it called shifter, but that (at least on OS X) is still far too buggy. For those who don't know what xpra is, if you know what screen is, it's like screen for GUI X Windows apps tunneled over ssh. You can render a remote X app locally so it's faster than sending a series of compresses screen shots (like VNC), but with xpra you can disconnect and reconnect on different computers. To get the basic functionality you can just type "ssh -X server.location" and any GUI app you open from the command line will open locally. I've been able to get xpra to build by doing the following: Download pari-all-0.0.6.tar.gz from the xpra site listed under upstream and untar it. Issue the following Mac Ports command (Dependencies thanks to RogBlog): sudo port install python25 python26 py26-pyrex py26-gtk xorg-libXtst py25-gobject py25-gtk py25-nose py26-nose xorg-libXdamage xorg-libXcomposite xorg-libXtst xorg-libXfixes In the upstream list of v0.0.06 patches (NOT 0.0.8pre!) on the xpra site listed above, download mswindows-conditional-pyrex.patch. Open the patch with your favorite text editor and change the single occurrence of "win" in it to "darwin". Apply the patch to setup.py. Run do-build in the command line. Now where I'm stumped: how do I run xpra? The build produces a sub directory called install/bin in which xpra is located, but when I try to run it I get the following error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "./xpra", line 4, in import xpra.scripts.main ImportError: No module named xpra.scripts.main There is a file called main.py under xpra/scripts, but I don't know any python and I'm not sure if this is what it's looking for, and what to do with it even if it is. My goal is to set up xpra so I can install it into /usr/bin (or some other common path for executables) and execute it whenever I please. What do I do next?

    I'm using a D-Link DWR-112 3G router to connect to the internet by using Celcom broadband plug-in. How can I do the port forwarding to my server? I already have correctly configured my DynDNS, but every time the DynDNS will not set to public address but local private address with in the range 10.xxx.xxx.xxx. My router address is 192.168.1.1 and server address is 192.168.1.5. Can someone give me some guideline about this issue?

    I have Ubuntu 10.04 running gnome and two monitors. I am wondering if a can get a better multi-monitor configuration tool. The one I have, gnome-display-properties, has too many problems, including: when I swapped my monitors over, the narrower one now on the left. There is a width calculation error, such that I have a virtual monitor the width of the wide-monitor on the narrow-monitor and part of the wide monitor. And a virtual narrow-monitor on the remainder of the wide-monitor. I would like: nobugs. to be able to select which is primary monitor. to have multiple configurations. configurations to be automatically selected based on which monitors are attached. configurations to be cycled (reliably) when display mode key is pressed. when a display is deactivated, for windows to migrate to remaining monitors. option to not change display resolution when mirroring, but to use side/top blanking bars to pad out screen.

    The issue is as follows: I am using Ubuntu Linux. I am working from home, and I need to access a PostgreSQL database severer within my company's network. Call the DB server X. For security reasons, only one machine can be accessed from the outside using ssh, call it Y. So the scenario is: Home <--SSH-- Y <----- X(DB) I think something like SSH forwarding (configured in .ssh/config) could help with this, but I am not sure how to do this, any ideas?

  • emails not working after domain has been forwarded to new hosting?

    What's the best course of action after the forwarding of domain has been done and apparently the email has been forgotten to be taken into account? I just forwarded the domain to a new server hosting and i forgot to take into account the emails from the old provider? A few concerns arise: the emails won't be lost, right? will pointing the MX records to the old mail server IP address fix this issue right away? Thanks!

    Is there a way I can get this behavior on Mac OS? alt + right-click-drag will resize the window, relative to where you've clicked within the window and the window's center alt + left-click-drag will move the window, regardless of where you've clicked within the window. Im looking for a window manager that has the following properties: 1) Supports virtual desktop (need 4 minimum) 2) Works well with multi monitors - can move an app with shortcut from one monitor to the other (on same virtual desktop) 3) Can remember window position (i.e. open vim on 2 monitor) - however must coerce everything back to first window when 2nd screen is unplugged 4) Keyboard shortcut friendly 5) Not too hard to install 6) Works well with minimum hardware such as integrated graphics Please suggest and share your experiences
