• Is there a shell-independent HUD-like menu search tool for Xfce/GNOME/Cinnamon?

  The Ubuntu Heads-Up Display (HUD) - you love it or you hate it. Personally I rather like a classic desktop, so I use Xfce or GNOME-fork Cinnamon, and I'd like to keep those menu's where they are. But the HUD is pretty awesome when your menus are complex and you forgot where an option sits. This makes that search trick very interesting. I know the HUD is Unity specific. I am looking for a HUD-like tool to complement the menu in shells other than Unity. There is Appmenu Runner for KDE that does this. There is also appmenu-qt for KDE. Problem with the above is that it uses KDE libs, and it only works for KDE apps. This is Linux, there aught to be something like this for GNOME/GTK apps, right? Looking for any tool that can search the menus. I already use(d) Synapse, Kupfer and GNOME Do, but those are simply app-launchers (with some tricks). Something like that would suffice if only they included searching the menus for the currently focused application. The HUD allows users to activate menu items by typing part of the name. It uses a fuzzy search algorithm that will highlight partial matches. It can match menu items that are multiple layers deep in an application's menu hierarchy. The feature, which replaces traditional menu accelerators, is activated by pressing the alt key.   It seems the java.net.NetworkInterface implementation of android does not have a byte[] getHardwareAddress() method http://developer.android.com/reference/java/net/NetworkInterface.html I've found several forums of people trying to do this with no definitive answer, I need to get a somewhat cross-device UUID, so I can't rely on phone numbers or in ANDROID_ID (which can be overwritten and which I think depends on the user having a google account) http://developer.android.com/reference/android/provider/Settings.Secure.html#ANDROID_ID In linux you can use ifconfig or read from /proc/net/arp and you can easily get the Hardware address. Is there a file in android that I can read? There has to be a way to get this address since it's shown in the "Settings About Phone Status" of the phone.

  Just thought I'd ping this community to see if there's any knowledge on this issue. On android phones SMS messages registered to applications also get sent to the device's inbox. However to prevent clutter, it'd be nice to be able to remove app specific SMS mesg's from the inbox to reduce the potential overflow of those messages. Questions on other google groups on getting a definitive answer on a programmatic way to delete SMS messages from the android inbox don't seem to be pressing. So the scenario: Android App startup. register SMS message types X,Y and Z messages P,Q,X,Y,Z stream in over the course of time, all deposited in inbox Android app detects receipt of X,Y,Z (presumably as part of the program interrupt event) process X,Y,Z Desirement!!! X,Y,Z are deleted from android inbox Has it been done? Can it be done?

According to the android google maps API v2: https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/android/views the way to set a specific zoom value is "CameraUpdateFactory.zoomTo(float)" and the same api https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/android/reference/com/google/android/gms/maps/CameraUpdateFactory#zoomTo(float) tells that the minimum argument to this function is 2. but when I call the function: mMap.moveCamera(CameraUpdateFactory.zoomTo(2)); The viewport of the world map is just a little bigger than Australia... • What kind of icon should I deploy with my Android 1.x and 2.x application?

  The thing is this, in Android 1.5 and 1.6 we had the Icon Design Guidelines. In this guide there are specifications for application icons. Every application should conform to this. However, in recent Android versions (2.0 and 2.1) icons have changed from the old to this new flat 2D style. Every icon in Nexus One has this style, so not even Google is conforming to the guideline. To see the differences between high and low density icons see this image and compare Evernote icon with the rest. I've been able to use different icons by using two directories with different icons: drawables-hdpi/icon.png and drawables/icon.png, BUT not every Android 2.x is going to be HDPI and not every 1.x Android device is going to be low pixel density. So the question is: Should I deploy different icons for different Android platform version within my apk file? and if I should, How do I do it?

• JQuery Menu plugins under ASP.NET MVC seem to only work in Chrome, but not in IE & FireFox

  Recently, I was trying to prototype some jQuery-based menu into ASP.NET MVC. Just to name two examples here: plugins.jquery.com/project/columnview www.filamentgroup.com/lab/jquery_ipod_style_and_flyout_menus/ Their demo page looks great, but when I integrate their sample code into MVC, the script no longer works in IE and FireFox, but it seems to work just fine under Google Chrome. Can someone kindly enough to point out what I missed? I will be honest here. I am still new to JavaScript, so it is still a learning phase to me, so any help is highly appreciated. I have placed a copy of my VS2010 solution zip file @ http://db.tt/0UNDkN Here is what I did. Ideally, it should work like the demo in www.christianyates.com/blog/jquery/finder-column-view-hierarchical-lists-jquery, but in reality, it only displays unordered list in plain view. (If you download the solution file and run it, you should be able to repro this as well). Next, tried with FireFox, not working either, same result as IE. For that you have to include 5 jars to your android application: guava-r09.jar google-http-client-extensions-android2-1.6.0-beta.jar google-api-client-extensions-android2-1.6.0-beta.jar google-http-client-1.6.0-beta.jar google-api-client-1.6.0-beta.jar and digging into google-api-java-client javadocs for fast-changing api. Does it worth the effort? in term of android specifics and device fragmentation? Isn't it reasonable to write your own simple http response parser or take small existing library like google-spreadsheet-lib-android ? Thanks!   Hi there, I am thinking about converting my web apps into Android apps to reach the Android market. I do not have an Android phone. Can someone tell me how I can possibly get a Google developer phone (other than going to Google I/O, etc)? I realize this is somewhat of a ridiculous request but I have read blogs of people being enticed by google and offered a free phone to convert their web apps into Android apps. So I figure there is no harm in asking. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks I am also wondering what the cost of the developer phone is once you pay your $25 to enter the android market place as a developer through the developer account.

  I started up Eclipse today, created a new project, and immediately had an error before I had changed a single line: Error generating final archive: Debug Certificate expired on 11/12/11 When installed, the Android SDK generates a "debug" signing certificate for you in a file called "debug.keystore". Eclipse uses this certificate rather than forcing you to create a new one for every project. In older versions of Eclipse, the certificate was only valid for 365 days, but as I understand it the default has been changed to 30 years in newer versions. If for whatever reason you don't want to upgrade Eclipse, you can manually delete the certificate to for Eclipse to generate a new one. You can find the location in Preferences -> Android -> Build -> Default debug keystore (mine was in C:\Users\myUserName\.android\); just delete the "debug.keystore" file, then go back into Eclipse and Clean the project to generate a new file.

  Since upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04, the microblogging and instant messaging entries have reappeared in the messaging menu. I put symlinks in ~/.config/indicators/messages/applications-blacklist to deactivate empathy evolution gwibber.indicator ubuntuone-control-panel, but this does not seem to have any effect now. How can I remove these entries? I would like to remove the status entries as well, and keep only Thunderbird information.
