• Download folders from dev server to local drive

  I am developing a .net web application on a local environment. I have a dev server that the application is installed on. Within the web application on the dev server I have four folders that I dont have locally and that are controlled by another application. In my day to day development I require the four folders on local PC. I would like to automate the process of pulling the folders from the dev server to my local drive, so I can keep thing in sync. Ideally something like this Run file from main folder (be it a bat file, powershell, some sort of job, open to recommendations) Download 4 folders supplied to it. First download bring everything down, from them on only pull the changes Not sure where to start with achieving this but would appreciate any help would with. I know there are apps out there that do something like this but would like to give a go writing something to do this before I resort to using one of them.

• Exchange 2010 Cmdlets for Sent Items in a Distribution group

  Here is the scenario that I am in and am stuck on how to get this the correct way. What I'm looking for is a syntax that will provide me with statistics on what users have emailed "Sent" for the day. I would like to know get information on what all users of a specific distribution group has emailed for the day. I have tried the following to no avail. • How do I find the really good AVS presets for winamp?

  I used to have an amazing collection of AVS presets that I slowly built up back in the day. I had probably 500-1000 that I could just let cycle through while I watched music. That was a while ago, and now I have no idea how to sort through the slushpile that is the winamp site to find the best presets. Sorting by rating is nearly useless since there are so many of varying quality. Is there a better way to browse the collection? Is there a really good large collection somewhere?

• Forward emails from specific domain in Exchange

  Our Exchange server handles emails for @ourdomain.com (for example). We have multiple clients that will send emails to our [email protected] email address and we want to configure server-side rules that will forward emails from each client's domain to a different email address within our exchange server. For example: [email protected] sends an email to [email protected] and we forward it to [email protected] [email protected] sends an email to [email protected] and we forward it to [email protected] ...and so on. It would be nice if we can additionally stop the email arriving in the [email protected] mailbox, but that is not a specific requirement. We have a rule setup in Outlook that sort of works, but it doesn't do all from a domain only specific email addresses. It does work when Outlook is not running which is a start. I realise it would be easier to give each client a partiuclar email address and have them email straight to that rather than all use the same, but this is what I have been asked to setup.... :S

• IT Inventory Tracking

  What is a good tool to keep track of IT inventory? Systems that are installed and running, parts being ordered, that sort of thing. I'd love a central, web based system (preferably something we can customize) but my searching so far has resulted in a lot of dead open source projects that havn't been updated in a few years and poorly created commercial websites that don't do a very good job describing their product. The software doesn't have to be free or open source - a good commercial alternative is fine. It doesn't even need to be a web-based tool, that's just what I thought would be simplist to find and easiest to deploy. The number of assets that it will be tracking will be in the dozens, so it doesn't have to be a super high-end enterprise solution but it does need to do a better job than an excel sheet in a shared folder (which is our current "solution")

• How much the distance and ms can affect on the download speed ?

  Let's consider A (client) and B (server) where A makes download from B. How much can a bad routing from A to B affect the download speed ? For example A does a tracert to B and get a response of 10 steps where the avg ms is around 300 with 10% packet loss at the 4 step and when the connection is normal the avg from A to B is 10 ~ 30 ms. Could this sort of impact reduce A download speed drasticaly or as long as both side and routes have enough link for the full speed of A from B and vice-versa it should maintain the same speed ? Besides tracert and the ping analyse of A to B what else is used to identify the problem ? If you need extra information please let me know.

• Websocket & HTTP proxy with server between two firewalls

  I have a server ("A") running behind a firewall, which serves HTTP and websockets. I have no control over the firewall, but do have an external server ("B") to which the internal server can connect (note that the reverse connection from B to A is not possible due to the firewall). How can I set up some sort of proxy on B such that an Internet client ("C") can access the resources on A? I'd prefer something lightweight—even a Python program or an SSH tunnel (which I've tried without success)—rather than something more heavyweight but robust.

• Putty freezes at random when logging into a remote machine in another continent

  I have to ssh to a remote machine in Europe from Asia every day for my work. But Putty freezes sometimes at totally random times and I have no choice but to close and re-open a new ssh session. It's frustrating especially when I'm editing something or executing a long running program. I know the question really doesn't have much details ('cause nothing seems to be wrong with the network at all). Has anyone experienced this sort of issue with Putty and had resolved it? • How to pin NetBeans to Windows 7 taskbar?

  I've googled around and it seems that I'm not the only one with the problem, however I couldn't find the solution. Maybe someone around here has figured it out. The problem is that netbeans.exe is actually a stub which is calling javaw.exe. When I try to pin the NetBeans process to the taskbar I actually pin "Java(TM) Platform SE Binary". That changes the icon and the pin doesn't work. The funny thing is that it works on another machine. I don't know whether it's because it's a different version of NetBeans, or a different version of Java. Has anyone figured this out? Added: I know this is sort of not programming related; on the other hand there are plenty of topics around here about how to better your programming environment, and this one is no worse than those. Oh, and btw - Windows 7 Enterprise x64; Java JDK 1.6.17; Netbeans 6.8

The date-time should also be stored when i enter text. is it possible EDIT: I will explain clearly what i exactly want. • Can I directly open an MMF Cash Drawer through RJ-11 port?

  My aunt bought this cash drawer at an auction recently and has tasked me with figuring how to open it via a computer. We have the key (pictured) and can open it manually, but I'd like to be able to plug it directly into a computer and open it via some sort of program or script. It has a built in rj-11 cord coming out of the back of it. Initial research shows that it might usually be used with a printer, but I want to be able to connect it directly to the computer. • I just got a linode VPS a week ago and I've been flagged for SSH scanning...

  I got a 32-bit Debian VPS from http://linode.com and I really haven't done any sort of advanced configuration for securing it ( port 22; password enabled ). It seems somehow there is ssh scanning going on from my IP, I'm being flagged as this is against the TOS. I've been SSHing only from my home Comcast ISP which I run Linux on. Is this a common thing when getting a new vps? Are there any standard security configuration tips? I'm quite confused as to how my machine has been accused of this ssh scanning.

• Programs still opening websites through Google Chrome, despite its removal

  Even after I've uninstalled Google Chrome, when other programs want to open a website (e.g.: Yahoo! Messenger getting a profile) they will still attempt to do so through Chrome, and fail looking for it. I've read all the advice on how to make Firefox or IE for Windows 7 the default browser. I don't think Google would do this sort of "hijack the default browser" thing and I'm convinced it must be a trojan or virus or even a registry hack. If so, any ideas on how I would go about fixing this without purchasing every virus/trojan program until it was removed? That method could be an expensive fix.

• Why can't I copy a 7 GB file to an external USB HD with 120 GB free?

  Yes, why can't I? I was stashing away some old photography backup zips last night. I could copy 4 of my 1 GB backup zips to my external USB connected hard-drive when I got the error message "Cannot copy file. Not enough free space." (sort of) for a zip of roughly 7 GB. But there are 120 GB free. Why is this? EDIT: Clarification - the files that I could copy was smaller than 4 GB. The failing one was 7 GB. The cause seems to be the FAT32 4 GB limit.

• Why do I get "Permission denied (publickey)" when trying to SSH from local Ubuntu to a Amazon EC2 se

  I have an instance of an application running in the cloud on Amazon EC2 instance, and I need to connect it from my local Ubuntu. It works fine on one of local ubuntu and also laptop. I got message "Permission denied (publickey)" when trying to access SSH to EC2 on another local Ubuntu. It's so strange to me. I'm thinking some sort of problems with security settings on the Amazon EC2 which has limited IPs access to one instance or certificate may need to regenerate. Does anyone know a solution?

• Distribute Windows (XP or 7) as virtual appliance

  I'm looking at ways that may be possible to distribute a Microsoft Windows (e.g. 7) virtual appliance (such as VMWare image) pre-configured and installed with a large application of mine. Is this possible? If not, is it perhaps best to ask clients to perform a virtual appliance installation on their site and then install my application via a script of some sort? For these kinds of scenarios I see that open source OSes are heavily used, but in my case I cannot use Linux or any other open source OS due to some requirements.

• Using JCal Pro and Community Builder together for registration

  Does anyone know if there is a way to use JCal Pro and Community Builder together in order to have users register for a specific event? When our new website was designed JCal Pro was implemented with the idea that individuals could look at the calendar and see what events they wanted to sign up for based spots open for that specific day. Now that we have more events and scheduling has become a major issue. For another project we installed CB in order to allow individuals to register and create profiles for an annual event. As I am looking at this nightmare I am living trying to organize various groupings of people I am assuming that there has to be some sort of a way to connect the two up so that those who have a user account through CB could also go in look at the calendar and sign up for an event. There is a JCal plug-in installed in CB however I have not had much luck at figuring out its functionality. I am running: Joomla 1.5.14 JCal Pro version 2.2.7.441 Community Builder: 1.2

• ESXi 4.0u1 - backup/copy options

  I have a machine built using ESXi 4.0u1 and it has 3 hard drives. I have my hosts built on different hard drives but wondering about backup options. I do not have RAID but I have 3 drives and 1 is totally empty. I had been using it to store ISOs for loading. So what options do I have to either create a 1 time copy onto the spare drive or some sort of snapshot to the spare drive? - There must be some way to do this either via the vsphere client or ssh into the ESXi box and go from there. • Outlook 2007 Clients attachments not opening correctly

  Hello, Thanks for taking the time to read this. We are having an issue on our Terminal Server clients that has me perplexed. We are running Server2003 x64 and Exchange 2007 environment. When we attempt to open an attachment for example .jpeg and the user selects to open the file, it prompts them to select a program to open the file with. The file associations apear to be fine, if I save the document to the desktop and open it, it opens with the correct program automatically. If i select "always open using this program" it will then open automatically, but I don't want to have to do this for all file types we open regularly on each client. Is this some sort of Exchange server security setting that is forcing them to associate the file? Does outlook or exchange maintain its own file association database? Thanks for reading!

• How to convert an image to a .dwg file

  My girlfriend is making an art project where she is having an image printed and cut out on a metal plate. The firm responsible for doing this is demanding a .dwg file (and something called polyline; some sort of setting maybe?). Neither of us have heard about this file format, and I find the information about it quite confusing. Most pages seem to link to some schetchy "FooToBarConverter" software, that I frankly don't trust. Could someone please enlighten us on what we need to do, or point to some safe and preferably free software that could do this? (An explanation of the dwg format and the polyline thing would also be much appreciated)

• Is there some standard way to publish a calendar feed?

  For a web application I am working on, I would like to be able to give the user a single url that they can enter into the calendar application of their choosing to have events from our application show up in their calendar. Most other sites I have seen that do similar things will have a one time download of an .ics file that can be imported. If I have to require my users to download a new file every time the schedule changes, it sort of defeats the purpose of having the feed at all. The calendar can change many many times a day. What I would really like is something like rss where their calendar program can look up a url and automatically see the most recent data. Does anything like this exist? Our main target is mobile devices, so it really should be supported by iCal and google Calendar. Anything else is bonus.

• Migrating Printers from XP to 7 (using USMT 4.0)

  I'm attempting to migrate a user from an XP machine to a 7 machine, using USMT 4.0 (User State Migration Tool, from Microsoft). For some reason the migration of printers isn't working, and none of the topics at Microsoft's TechNet are helping me out. • Handling FreeBSD package upgrades using pkg_add

  I'm trying to use FreeBSD's pkg_add command to install and upgrade binary packages in a build-once-install-on-multiple-machines sort of scenario. It works well when installing a new package, but upgrades are baffling me. For example, if I want to upgrade a package that is depended on by another package, I can't just install it: # pkg_add /path/to/somepackage-2.0.tbz pkg_add: package 'somepackage' or its older version already installed At this point, I can delete the older version of the package if I pass -f to the pkg_delete command: # pkg_delete -f somepackage-1.0 pkg_delete: package 'somepackage-1.0' is required by these other packages and may not be deinstalled (but I'll delete it anyway): anotherpackage-1.0 But...and this is the killer...now the dependency information is gone! I can install the upgrade: # pkg_add /path/to/somepackage-2.0.tbz And now attempts to delete it will succeed without any errors: # pkg_delete somepackage-2.0 How do I handle this gracefully (whereby "gracefully" means "in a fashion that preserves dependency information without requiring me to rebuild/reinstall and entire dependency chain"). • How would you diagnose an integrated network card that doesn't show up on the device list?

  I've been setting up a server based around a Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R motherboard (G33, PCH9R with integrated Realtek 811B network device. I've enabled it in the BIOS, but it doesn't show up in the pre-boot PCI device list, isn't recognized by Windows (even after installing the chipset and networking drivers) and doesn't even show up via lspci. I've tried cycling power, disabling, cycling again, enabling, cycling again etc. to no avail. I'm sort of at a loss at this point; the board isn't under warranty anymore, but I'd rather not have to replace it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

• TightVNC (or any VNC) client windows scaling

  Hi, I am currently using TightVNC to connect to multiple remote hosts in LAN. I start 16 VNC instances, set Scaling by: Auto (in connection options display), set Hextile encoding, and then select all windows and use Tile Horizontally, which covers my entire screen with VNC screens. It all works sort of nice, except that desktop interaction is really slow when there are more then 4 VNC clients. My question is, does VNC client (not just TightVNC, but any compatible client) support some kind of smart scaling option, so that client tells server something along the lines of: "Okay, I'm displaying your entire screen in a window size 300x225 px, so can you please start sending encoded images on that resolution?", at which point interactiveness of open connections dramatically increase, and when I decide to go full screen on some connection, client and server re-negotiate and server starts sending full resolution images again?
