• Why is Outlook 2007 resizing images in outgoing and incoming HTML email? How can I fix this?

  In my Outlook 2007 client, embedded images in incoming emails appear resized when the message is viewed. The incoming images are resized to 198px wide, despite the original size. If it was larger, it will be shrunk; if it was smaller, it will be enlarged; the aspect ratio remains the same (the image is not stretched). This is local to my client only (i.e. another Outlook 2007 client reading the same IMAP inbox will see the image in the correct size. Similarly, viewing the email message in a browser will display the correct size). This happens regardless of whether width/height attributes are set on the image tag in the HTML. Zoom is set to 100% in my message window; text and other elements are not distorted from the original. In addition to this, outgoing HTML messages with images embedded in the same way are resized as they are sent. The outgoing images are all scaled to have a width of 247px. The source HTML of the outgoing message is changed after pressing Send so that the tag's width attribute is 247 pixels and the image file itself is also resized. These problems only occur with HTML messages; Rich Text messages do not have the same problem. I have already tried reinstalling Outlook and have it fully patched up to date. Why is this happening and how can I stop this?

• Problems configuring logstash for email output

• How should I deploy my JVM-based web application on ubuntu?

  I've developed a web application using clojure/compojure (JVM based) and while developing I tested it using embedded jetty that runs on 0.0.0.0:8080. I would now like to deploy it to run on port 80 on ubuntu. I do dynamic virtual hosting, so any request for any host that arrives on port 80 should be handled by my application. The issues that worries me are: I can still run it embedded but I'm worried about running my app as root (needed for binding to port 80). I'm not sure if I can 'give up root' when in the JVM. Do I need to be concerned by this? besides, serving web applications is a known problem and I should be using known solutions for this (jetty or tomcat) but especially tomcat seems very heavy weight. Besides, I only have one application that listens to /* and does routing internally. (with compojure/ring). What I'm trying to say with this is that tomcat by default assigns WARs to subfolders which I don't want. So basically what I need is some very safe way of binding to port 80 on ubuntu that can with minimal interference send all requests to my app. Any ideas?

• nginx hackery : change image file every X request

  Let me describe what I am trying to do first. I have a bunch of pictures in a directory called /images/*.(jpg|gif|png|blah blah|) Now say these images are embedded in an html page and I dont really care which image or where its embedded. For every 10th request for the same picture file (if possible) or for any picture I want to display a fixed image (e.g. trollface.jpg). thats it! I have searched around a bit but i am not even sure what I am looking for. Rewrite might help but then its a permanent thing. this has got to do something with requests. I have heard perl scripts can be used with nginx. I can't write an nginx module (though I did bravely lookup the docs and then gave up) Before you ask "But why don't you do it in application, noob?". This is a static files only server. The point is to not execute any binary at all.

• Configuring MySQL for Power Failure

  I have absolutely no experience with databases and MySql. Now the problem is I have an embedded device running a MySQL database with a web based application. The problem is when I shutdown my embedded device it just cut off the power, and I can not have a controlled shutdown. Given this situation how can I configure MySql to prevent it from failures and in case of a failure, I should have maximum support to recover my database. While searching this, I came across InnoDB Engine as well as some configuration options to set like sync_binlog=1 & innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit=1. I have noticed my default Engine is InnoDB and binary logs are also enabled. What are other configurations to make for best possible failure & recovery support. Updated: I will be using InnoDB engine which supports Transactions. My question is how best I can configure it (InnoDB + MySQL) so that it can provide best possible fail-safe as well as crash recovery mechanism. One configuration option I came across is to enable binary logging which InnoDB uses at the time of recovery. Regards, Farrukh Arshad

• Is it possible to use Google Docs Viewer to view files already in Google Docs?

  The title is a little confusing. I'll elaborate. As far as I can tell, the Google Docs Viewer tool accepts a link to a raw document file (e.g. .doc, .pdf, et. al.), and renders its contents in the browser. For example, this url to a pdf http://research.google.com/archive/bigtable-osdi06.pdf when passed to Viewer, returns this link: http://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fresearch.google.com%2Farchive%2Fbigtable-osdi06.pdf What I'm trying to achieve is, use the Viewer to view a document already hosted in Google Docs (i.e. no longer a raw document file). When passing a link to a Google Docs document to the Viewer, the result is not as expected. It renders the link's HTML source instead of the document's contents. The reason I want to do this is that I want to be able to use the "embed" feature of Viewer to view Google Docs documents. Does Google Docs have a "link to embeddable view" feature? P.S. Here is a sample snippet to an embedded document. • Understanding Unix Permissions (w/ ACL)

  I am trying to set permissions on my server properly. Currently I have a number of directories and files chmod'd at 0777 -- but I am not comfortable with it being this way. So at the advice of a serverfault specialist, I had my hosting provider install ACL on my shared virtual server. When I FTP to the server as my FTP user account "abc", I can do everything I need to do (and rightfully so) because all my dirs and files are owned by "abc", the group is "abc", and the 1st octet is set to 7 (rwx). That much I get. But here's where it gets dark gray for me. PHP is set to user "nobody". so when someone browses on of my web pages that either ends in .php or has some embedded PHP, I assume the last octet controls the access. Because all my dirs and files are owned by "abc" and assigned to group "abc", if the last octet was a 4 (r--) then the server would let the browser read the file. If it were a 6 (rw-) then the server would let the browser also write to the file or directory, correct? what if the web document does not end in .php or does not have any PHP embedded? What is the user then? how can I use ACL to not set the permission to 6 (rw-) or even 7 (rwx)? [not sure what execute does or means] Just looking for some sort of policy settings to best lock down my dirs and files while allowing my PHP scripts to do uploads and write to files (so my users don't call me to tell me "permission denied". Ok, thanks to anyone out there willing to lend me a hand. It is greatly appreciated.

• SBS 2008 Sharepoint Database good Memory Limit.

  I manage a small network running on Small Business Server 2008. Lately, the Sharepoint embedded database is getting out of control with its memory usage. I've got a total of 16 GB of RAM on this server, and the Sharepoint database sometimes uses almost 8 GB of RAM. This never happened before, and it started happening after I installed Backup Exec 2010. It happens after a backup is performed. So I suspect there is a memory leak involved. I am working on that issue, but this question isn't about that. I would like to limit the amount of memory the Embedded database uses. I know how to do it. My question is, what would be the ideal amount of memory that I can allocate to Sharepoint? There are only 4 users on my network. One of the users uses two computers but not at the same time. They use sharepoint for a company calendar, and sometimes they share files that way also. Let me know if you need to know anything else. Thanks,

• Why does my laptop resume immediately after suspend?

  I seem to be having some problem with suspend mode. Every time I try to suspend my laptop, it just locks the screen. Or maybe it successfully suspends just to resume only an instant after. • Responsive Design for your ADF Faces Web Applications

  Responsive web applications are a common pattern for designing web pages that adjust their UI based on the device that access them. With the increase in the number of ADF applications that are being accessed from mobile phones and tablet we are getting more and more questions around this topic. Steven Davelaar wrote a comprehensive article covering key concepts in this area that you can find here. The article focuses on what I would refer to as server adaptive application, where the server adapts the UI it generates based on the device that is accessing the server. However there is one more technique that is not covered in that article and can be used with Oracle ADF - it is CSS manipulation on the client that can achieve responsive design. I'll cover this technique in this blog entry. The main advantage of this technique is that the UI manipulation does not require the server to send over a new UI when a change is needed. This for example allows your page to change immediately when you change the orientation of your device. (By the way this example was developed for one of the seminars in the upcoming Oracle ADF OTN Virtual Developer Day). In the demo that you'll see below you'll see a single page that changes the way it is displayed based on the orientation of the device. Here is the page with the tablet in landscape and portrait: To achieve this I'm using a CSS media query in my page template that changes the display property of a couple of style classes that are used in my page.   I am trying to write an application that takes in sound from the default audio recording device on a computer. When running any code that accesses DirectX from my managed code i get this error: DLL 'C:\Windows\assembly\GAC\Microsoft.DirectX.DirectSound\1.0.2902.0__31bf3856ad364e35\Microsoft.DirectX.DirectSound.dll' is attempting managed execution inside OS Loader lock. Do not attempt to run managed code inside a DllMain or image initialization function since doing so can cause the application to hang. DevicesCollection coll = new DevicesCollection(); and Device d = new Device(DSoundHelper.DefaultCaptureDevice); and Capture c = new Capture(DSoundHelper.DefaultCaptureDevice); all cause the LoaderLock MDA to pop up and tell me there is a problem. I have scoured the internet (stackoverflow included) for solutions to this problem, but most people just say to turn off the warning, which does not work. When I turn off the warning, a generic ApplicationException is thrown, which is even less useful. I have seen the answers to this question as well, which didn't help because he said to remove the code that is causing the error. Others have said "fix your code." My questions are: how can I call any (preferably managed) DirectX code from C# without getting this error?

  Hi, I am facing a problem where-in I cannot select videos from the photo album in iPhone 2G/3G device. The default photos application does show videos and is capable of playing them, which in turn means that UIImagePickerController should clearly be capable of showing videos in photo album and selecting them. I havent tested for 3GS, but I am sure that this problem does not exist in it with reference to other threads. I have built the app for both 3.0 (base SDK) and 3.1 but with the same results. I expect this particular info would come from the USB device its self. Can any one show me how to do that. By the way in my version of windows XP I’m using the registry path, I cannot find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\HID...\Class I do not even get HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\ I think this is because I have not executed the SetupDiEnumDeviceInterfaces Function Why? • Forcing UIInterfaceOrientation changes on iPhone

  I'm strugging with getting an iPhone application which requires just about every push or pop in the Nav Controller Stack to change orientation. Basically the first view is portrait, the second landscape the third portrait again (Yes I know this is less than ideal, but that's the design and I've got to implement it). Setting to link against 3.1.2 my reading of the linked articles above seems to indicate that if my portrait view pushes a view with - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { // Return YES for supported orientations return ((interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight) ); } Then then that view should appear rotated to landscape. What happens is it appears in its "broken" portrait form, then rotates correctly as the device is turned. If I pop the controller back to my portrait view (which has an appropriate shouldAutoRotate...) then that remains in broken landscape view until the device is returned to portrait orientation. I've also tried removing all the shouldautorotate messages, and instead forcing rotation by transforming the view. This kind of works, and I've figured out that by moving the status bar (which is actually hidden in my application) [UIApplication sharedApplication].statusBarOrientation = UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight; the keyboard will appear with the correct orientation when desired. The problem with this approach is that the status bar transform is weird and ugly when you don't have a status bar - a shadow looms over the page with each change. So. What am I missing. 1) Am I wrong in thinking that in 3.1.2 (or possibly earlier) shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation should provide the desired orientation simply by pushing controllers ? 2) Is there another way of getting keyboards to appear in the correct orientation. 3) Are the undocumented API calls the way to go (please no!)

• Hive Based Registry in Flash

  To start with I'll say I've read the post here and I'm still having trouble. I'm trying to create a CE6 image with a hive-based registry that actually stores results through a reboot. I've ticked the hive settings in the catalog items. In common.reg, I've set the location of the hive ([HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init\BootVars] "SystemHive") to "Hard Drive\Registry" (Note: the flash shows up as a device called "Hard Drive") In common.reg, I've set "Flags"=dword:3 in the same place to get the device manager loaded along with the storage manager I've verified that these settings are wrapped in "; HIVE BOOT SECTION" This is where it starts to fall over. It all compiles fine, but on the target system, when it boots, I get: A directory, called "Hard Disk" where a registry is put A device, name called "Hard Disk2" where the permanent flash is Any changes made to the registry are lost on a reboot What am I still missing? Why is the registry not being stored on the flash? Strangly, if I create a random file/directory in the registry directory, it is still there after a reboot, so even though this directory isn't on the other partition (where I tried to put it), it does appear to be permanent. If it is permanent, why don't registry settings save (ie Ethernet adapter IP addresses?) I'm not using any specific profiles, so I'm at a loss as to what the last step is to make this hive registry a permanent store.

• WCF Named Pipe IPC

  I have been trying to get up to speed on Named Pipes this week. The task I am trying to solve with them is that I have an existing windows service that is acting as a device driver that funnels data from an external device into a database. Now I have to modify this service and add an optional user front end (on the same machine, using a form of IPC) that can monitor the data as it passes between the device and the DB as well as send some commands back to the service. My initial ideas for the IPC were either named pipes or memory mapped files. So far I have been working through the named pipe idea using WCF Tutorial Basic Interprocess Communication . My idea is to set the Windows service up with an additional thread that implements the WCF NamedPipe Service and use that as a conduit to the internals of my driver. I have the sample code working, however I can not get my head around 2 issues that I am hoping that someone here can help me with: In the tutorial the ServiceHost is instantiated with a typeof(StringReverser) rather than by referencing a concrete class. Thus there seems to be no mechanism for the Server to interact with the service itself (between the host.Open() and host.Close() lines). Is it possible to create a link between and pass information between the server and the class that actually implements the service? If so, how? If I run a single instance of the server and then run multiple instance of the clients, it seems that each client gets a separate instance of the service class. I tried adding some state information to the class implementing the service and it was only retained within the instance of the named pipe. This is possibly related to the first question, but is there anyway to force the named pipes to use the same instance of the class that is implementing the service? Finally, any thoughts on MMF vs Named Pipes? Thanks for you help

• Developing a GPS car tracking system in C#

  I'm in the brainstorming phase to develop a GPS car tracking system requested by a customer. I myself know the directions to build some GPS system to mobile phones and etc. But sincerely I don't know how to start in that project. That is the scenario: 1) The cars will get a device with a SIM CARD that will emit GPS signals. 2) My customer will in any place (home, work, etc) with a web connection will see in the map where the car is located. For me, I have not problems at get the GPS data, convert to usable info and show the position in some map system (like Google Maps or MS Bing Maps, by example). My problem is, how I do to retrieve that "GPS Signal" from device in the car? I will need some kind of "Receiver Device" connected to a web server machine in order to my application to consume that data? Or "automagically" my sodtware will receive the info from a third-party web-service? Or what? I thank for any help!

• compiling iphone program in snow leopard wtih libsqlite3 library

  Hi, I develop an iphone application which uses sqlite3 as a database. That time my OS X version was leopard. So add added libsqlite3.0.dylib to frameworks and compile without any problems it complied and with any problems I could run it on the device as well. This week I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac. Removing old Leopard version and install a fresh Snow leopard system. But my problem is now I cannot compile that program because it will give errors with sqlite3 library. I added sqlite3.0.dylib using selecting targets and then selecting file. Also tried adding selecting it from directly /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.3.sdk/usr/lib I get two different errors when I compiled to device and to simulator when compiled to device, ld: warning: in /opt/local/lib/libsqlite3.0.dylib, file is not of required architecture* When compiled to simulator, ld: warning: in /opt/local/lib/libsqlite3.0.dylib, file was built for unsupported file format which is not the architecture being linked (i386) ld: warning: in /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.3.sdk/usr/lib/libSystem.dylib, missing required architecture i386 in file ld: in /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.3.sdk/usr/lib/libobjc.A.dylib, missing required architecture i386 in file Command /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/usr/bin/gcc-4.2 failed with exit code 1 i also tried with adding sqlite3.dylib (, I think sqlite3.0.dylib is linked to sqlite3.dylib.) but no luck. • Why is WMDC/ActiveSync so flaky?

  I'm developing a Windows Mobile app using the .NET Compact Framework 3.5 and VS2008, and for debugging using the Device Emulator V3, on Win7, and seem to have constant problems with Windows Mobile Device Centre (6.1) connecting. Using the Emulator Manager (9.0.21022.8) I cradle the device using DMA in WMDC. The problem is it's so flaky at actually connecting that it's becoming a pain. I find that when I turn my computer on, before I can get it to connect I have to open up WMDC, disable Connect over DMA, close WMDC down, reopen it again, and then it might cradle. Often I have to do this twice before it will cradle. Once it's cradled it's generally fine, but nothing seems consistent in getting it to connect. Connecting with physical devices is often better, although not always. If I plug a PDA into a USB socket other than the one it was originally plugged into then it won't connect at all. Often the best/most reliable connection method seems to be over Bluetooth, but that's quite slow. Anybody got any tips or advice?

I also want to include some sort of timeout when getting back stuff from device. • Ability to draw and record a signature as part of a form - iphone

  Apolgies in advance for any errors.. new to this and am not a developer/programmer.. just have some basic unix experience. I have searched the web and struggled to find a solution to my problem when I stumbled onto this website which maybe suggested that there is a solution to my question. For work i use a windows mobile device because we have to get customers to sign and form after a customer visit. the signature being very important. On the windows device i use the notes application and am able to record details and obtain/record (using draw) a customer signature. the form is then emailed back to HQ. The format being used is a *.pwi I have downloaded and paid for several applications for my iphone which is my preferred device and cant quite find anything that does both. the critical bit here is to be able to take a signature on the phone, save the doc in a format such as .txt, .doc or .pdf where i can control the file name then be able to email back to HQ. Am i asking too much? I hope that makes sense.. Any help would be much appreciated many thanks in advance

• iPhone Debugging: How to resolve 'failed to get the task for process'?

  I have just added a provisioning profile to XCode (needed to support notifications and in app purchase), setup as needed the build configuration for ad hoc distribution, and tried to run the app on the device (I have done this several times in the past, without any problem). The app is installed, but it does not start. On the console, I see the following message: Error launching remote program: failed to get the task for process 82. Error launching remote program: failed to get the task for process 82. The program being debugged is not being run. The program being debugged is not being run. However, if I start the application on the device manually, it works as expected. I have recently installed the latest XCode 3.2 for Snow Leopard. Is this a known bug of this version of XCode or am I doing something wrong? EDIT: It works fine with release distribution using the development provisioning profile. I have checked again the ad hoc provisioning profile to make sure it includes the device I am using.
