• Browsing Audiobooks on an iPod Nano

  The sitation: I've got a stack of audiobooks in MP3 format in my iTunes library, and both an iPhone and an iPod Nano. After this question, I've changed the Media Kind for the audiobook MP3s from Music to Audiobook. This has been, overall, spectacular, as now I can resume where I was, they show up under Audiobooks, etc. On the iPhone, it's also super convenient, since the interface shows what used to be an album with multiple songs as a single book with multiple chapters, and going into "Audiobooks" presents me with a list of books, not tracks. The Nano, on the other hand, is a little strange. After changing the media type and re-syncing the ipod, the files in question are now listed under Audiobooks rather than Music, and the extra Audiobook features are present (resume playback and so on,) but the Audiobooks menu just lists all the MP3 tracks on the iPod in alphabetical order, ignoring whichever book/album they belong to - and doesn't seem to let me browse them any other way. This is, clearly, a little sub-optimal. Did I screw something up? How do I get the Nano to treat the files in a similar way to the way the iPhone and iTunes does - as books with chapters? Is there a step I missed somewhere? Do I need to reformat the iPod? Is this even possible? (Footnote: shameless bump, since this just scored me a tumbleweed.)

We want to connect using a public key through SSH which doesn't work. It always falls back to using password login. • Working with barcode fonts in Word

  I need to create labels in Microsoft Word 2010 with numbers encoded as barcodes. The barcode's format (ean, code39, upc, etc) does not matter. I have downloaded a barcode conversion font that I found at this site. When I type the number that I want and then I format it with my new font, it produces a barcode. I then print it on an OKI laser printer (1200 dpi). The result seems to be fine, at least for common people. But, when I try to scan it, nothing happens. I tried both with a barcode scanner and a data collector, but neither of them read the barcode. My barcode scanner is working fine, because I can read commercial barcodes printed on products. Does anybody have any advice? How do I do this kind of stuff? I want to do it using Word because I will generate labels using Mail Merge. Therefore using external programs aren't option for me.

  I own a Sony Reader PRS-600 ebook reader. I bought a ton of Manning Publications ebooks (DRM-free) recently. Many of the books are PDFs since not all the ones I wanted are available in epub format. The problem: Some of the PDF books I purchased have incorrect or missing metadata. Making things worse, the Sony Reader only displays the "Title" from the PDF metadata when displaying book titles in the reader's collection of books! The Reader doesn't display the filename. So, even though I have a PDF informatively named "Windows PowerShell In Action.pdf", it shows up as "untitled" in the Reader. Imagine how useful the Reader's list of book titles becomes when many are just "untitled" or "unnamed document" ! Yes, it is maddening. So – short of expecting the publisher to fix the files or Sony to add a filename-based list instead, I'm looking for a way to fix the PDF metadata. I can view the metadata with Adobe Reader, but it doesn't permit modification of the properties. Leading to: Question: Is there a tool – free, or cheap – and either for PC or Mac, that can modify the properties / metadata of a DRM-free PDF document? I want to correct "Title" and "Author" fields, specifically.

To make it more specific - standard fonts look more or less OK, but when I use my national characters (like acelnsózz) they all look broken - like from another font, or badly scaled. The same problem doesn't exist in GNOME Terminal. I usually use the Terminus font, so I used this for demonstration, but it shows in other fonts as well - if that will be necessary I will provide list. • How to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux on Apple Macbook Pro MacBookPro4,1

  I have a one year old Mac Book Pro that I am trying to get RHEL 5.4 installed on via bootcamp. No matter what I do I can't get the installer to boot. I have tried multiple DVD's and even verified the install works on a new Mac Book Pro. Most of the time the installer simply locks up. I usually use Linux text with all-generic-ide on the boot line. I removed the ide parameter and I just used linux text. The results I get are that a bunch of kernel messages appear then the background turns blue and a thin text box pops up saying its loading ata..... something it disappears too fast for me to read. Then the machine freezes. I pressed the alt function keys to see if I could look at the system log, here is what it says: Alt-f3 says "trying to mount CD device hda" Alt-f4 says status error: hda: lastFailedSense Hda: Failed opcode was: unknown Hda: Lost interrupt Hda: Drive not ready for command Ide-cd: command 0x3 timed out Above this junk it looks like it found the partition because it knew it was 20 GB and listed as /dev/sda3. I think it has something to do with the CD drive, is that possible? Thanks again for the support.   Possible Duplicate: How do I hard code a movie with subtitles? I am looking for a software (or combination of software) that will allow me to hard burn subtitles from an .srt file, that has italics and bold typefaces, to an H.264/AVC encoded video so it can played from a desktop player that can't display external subtitles correctly. Ideally it could use Directshow as input as DirectVobSub makes nice job showing the subtitles as they should (allowing me to globally adjust font and size). CUDA use, to speed up encoding, will be great but not necessary. Video source is also H.264/AVC encoded. Audio is AC-3 5.1 and should be retained too but I have no problem re-muxin it later as long as it keeps synced.   I have an audiobook that I have ripped and I need some help constructing chapters. I have already made some cue sheets TITLE "Bookname" PERFORMER "the Author" FILE "File1.FLAC" wave ; 23971906.667 milliseconds TRACK 01 AUDIO TITLE "_Intro" INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 02 AUDIO TITLE "CH 01" INDEX 01 24:15:50 TRACK 03 AUDIO TITLE "CH 02" INDEX 01 66:21:00 TRACK 04 AUDIO TITLE "CH 03" INDEX 01 87:05:00 The audio book is in two files. The chapter at the end of the first file is continued in the second file. However, the second file restates: The publisher Book Title List item Blah blah blah I would like to merge the two 'halves' of the chapter in one seamless track. The only way I can think to do this would be be: Bulk cut down the tracks. Drop the junk info into junk track Continue the track listings as normal Take the two "halves" of the target chapter and build a separate cue sheet for it. I know there has to be an easier way. I am ok with making the 'junk' info a 'gap' or something. These are are FLAC files that will be converted to MP3 for my phone and other potable devices. I have read the primers on cue sheets, but I am just not getting it.

And I'm getting a socket timeout when I try to run the selenium tests, so I guess the problem is in Firefox and Xvfb. I have installed already the nex package: i gconf-defaults-service - GNOME configuration database system (system defaults service) That in some forums suggest to be a fix, that in my case doesn't work. Any explanation about the problem and ways of solving it without installing a full gui, will be very helpful.

• How to display escaped characters in tmux status bar

  i am running tmux from a tty on an embedded linux device. (NOT a terminal emulator) because the screen is rather small, i want to add some "icons" to the tmux status bar. to achieve this, i have simply created a font with the appropriate glyphs for things like battery, or wifi. i can load the font, and display the characters with calls that use an escape to the line drawing characters like so: echo -e "\xe\234\xf" \xe escapes me into line drawing character mode, \234 is my created character, and \xf returns me to normal character mode so my terminal doesnt start getting goofy. this works perfectly if i enter the command at the terminal whether tmux is started or not. the issue arises if i then try to use it in my ~/.tmux.conf file for the status bar. i currently have a line like this: set -g status-right "#(echo -e "\xe\234\xf") #(/script/to/output/powerlevel) this simply outputs \xe\234\xf powerlevel this goes the same if i try printf over echo. this is the output i would expect to get on the terminal if i made the call without passing -e to echo, or without enclosing the statement with quotes. i then decided to wrap the calls to the echo or printf in a shell script. again, the script works when called from the terminal, but not in tmux's status bar. now i get the unprintable character "?" instead of my icon, like this: ? powerlevel this is what i would expect if i did not use the line drawing escapes previously mentioned above, or if i tried to copy and paste the character as text using tmux. in addition, the calling of these character scripts screws up the rest of my status-right, as the clock has about 6 digits for minutes when it is called (though it correctly only updates two of them). how can i make tmux respect the escape characters? any help or insight is greatly appreciated.

This is … stupid. It doesn't even bother to specify a monospaced font. • How to run Fujitsu P27T-7 LED monitor in its not native resolution and have perfect fonts rendering

  My problem is completely opposite to anything I could find as I need to run my monitor in its NOT native resolution and have perfect font rendering. I recently got myself Ultra HD 2560x1440 27 inch monitor (Fujitsu P27T-7 LED) and I have an issue with this. I would call it personal but I'm afraid it's not as few people already agreed with me. I do programming and the text on UHD is way to small for comfortable usage. I changed the resolution to regular Full HD (1920x1080), it became just right but the text is looking slightly blur now, in comparison to both its natural UHD resolution and/or to my old 23 inch NEC. I am pretty frustrated and not sure what to do and how to make fonts look just as sleek as they should? I can't work in UHD resolution (my vision is 100% perfect), simply if calculated, picture size with Ultra HD (2560x1440) on 27 inch is around 30% smaller than Full HD (1920x1080) on 23 inch. In order to have same font size, if compared with Full HD 23 inch, 27 inch Ultra HD monitor must be around 32 inches in size. If I set my new monitor to regular Full HD 1920x1080, then the fonts' size are just perfect but the quality is not as it's blurry? Could anyone please help me out with an advise of how to solve this problem? Spec: nVidia 560 Ti with DVI-D port on Fedora 20. EDIT 1: Changing fonts doesn't really help as everything else doesn't look the way it should. EDIT 2: The monitor is buzzing on 2560x1440 so badly in case there are lots of lines on the screen, like file listing. If I type ls /usr/bin it makes such nasty irritating sound. When resolution goes to 1920x1080 it's a bit better. Any idea why?

• Installed Bunch of New Fonts on Windows 7 - Now None Show Up and System Lags

  So I went to install about 5,000 fonts on my Windows 7 64-bit machine. It was slow to install them, and I had to leave. I came back and my PC was shut down, and I had to go through the Windows recovery BS when I powered it on. Now my computer runs EXTREMELY slow and any program that has a font menu locks up my whole machine (nothing in Microsoft Office works). When I go to "Fonts" in the control panel, it says 0 items. I went through all of the font settings trying to get them to appear. Nothing helps. I tried to bring up the Character Map and that froze up my machine too. How can I fix this? If I do not get this issue resolved soon, I am wiping this drive and going back to XP (and probably never purchasing another version of Windows again). I never had any issues with XP and have had nothing but performance problems when switching to Windows 7. My quad-core intel extreme with 8GB of RAM should never flinch with the kind of work that I do, and something simple like playing a song off an external HD takes up to five seconds on Windows 7. Unbelievable that I had to pay for this crap!

• Permanent fix for unicode characters not displaying correctly (as boxes)

  Please read this entire message before replying. First I know how to fix the issue on a temporary basis. I am looking for a permanent fix. I work with foreign language files a lot. Unfortunately sometimes all the unicode characters in windows explorer, notepad, and other places (as rendered by windows, probably GDI) do not display correctly. That is they display as square blocks, where as they had just been displaying correctly. There are countless methods to temporarily correct the issue. But again, I want a way to permanently resolve the issue. What I have tried: The silly "Hide fonts based on language settings". This setting only applies to what fonts you see in the fonts folder and font dropdowns. It doesn't disable foreign fonts (doesn't work, or if it does, it is temporary). Deleting the font cache file and rebooting (works.. usually, temporary solution). Changing my locale and then back (sometimes works, temporary solution). Rebooting my PC and getting lucky (50-50 chance, temporary solution). Changing my keyboard input/adding foreign keyboard (temporary solution that only seems to work once). Reinstalling windows (temporary solution, sometimes lasts a few months though, I have done this 7 times across 3 computers) What I have not tried: Buying Windows Ultimate and installing the interface packs. This is not a solution. I can't read Japanese/Chinese and I do not want my interface in those languages. What I will not do: Switch to a different brand operating system (unix, linux, mac os x) Switch to an older version of windows (Windows Vista, XP, 2000, etc). So can anyone recommend a permanent fix for the problem?

• Securing NTP: which method to use?

  Can someone good at NTP configuration please share which method is the best/easiest to implement a secure, tamper-proof version of NTP? Here are some difficulties... I don't have the luxury of having my own stratum 0 time source, so must rely on external time servers. Should I read up on the AutoKey method or should I try to go the MD5 route? Based on what I know about symmetric cryptography, it seems that the MD5 method relies on a pre-agreed set of keys (symmetric cryptography) between the client and the server, and, so, is prone to man-in-the-middle attack. AutoKey, on the other hand, does not appear to work behind a NAT or a masquerading host. Is this still true, by the way? (This reference link is dated 2004, so I'm not sure what is the state of art today.) 4.1 Are public AutoKey-talking time servers available? I browsed through the NTP book by David Mills. The book looks excellent in a way (coming from the NTP creator after all), but the information therein is also overwhelming. I just need to first configure a secure version of NTP and then may be later worry about its architectural and engineering underpinnings. Can someone please wade me through these drowning NTP waters? Don't necessarily need a working config from you, just info on which NTP mode/config to try and may be also a public time server that supports that mode/config. Many thanks, /HS

• How do I send e-mails with attachments to a Microsoft WebTV user?

  my friend uses Microsoft WebTV (e-mail address ends with @webtv.net) and I'd like to send him an e-mail with a picture attached to it. We went through a series of attempts one of which ended up a success, all others a failure. He just can't see my e-mail in his mailbox, when it contains an attachment. E-mails without attachments always go through all right. What seemed to help in the first successful case, was that he added my e-mail address to his address book and my e-mail suddenly showed up. Seemed to have been delivered before but hidden. He kept my address in his address book however, it didn't help with the following trials. He did look into his junk folder, nothing there. I made sure the file name contains no spaces. It's a regular jpeg, named something-like-this.jpg I downsized it to have only about 50k, as I've read somewhere that that's a limit. I actually doubt this piece of information, because I think the successful attempt was larger. webtv.net contains zero information. I watched their video demo for the e-mail client, so I at least know how the user interface looks like. I've never laid my hands on the real thing. I'm an advanced user myself (a programmer) but I can't wrap my mind around this. He on the other hand, is a very technically inexperienced user and because he's half way across the globe, I can't come and look over his shoulder. He doesn't have a computer, afaik there's no way I could see what he sees. Any ideas on how to debug this? Thanks for your time, guys. P.S. • How to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux on Apple Macbook Pro MacBookPro4,1

  I have a one year old Mac Book Pro that I am trying to get RHEL 5.4 installed on via bootcamp. No matter what I do I can't get the installer to boot. I have tried multiple DVD's and even verified the install works on a new Mac Book Pro. Most of the time the installer simply locks up. I usually use Linux text with all-generic-ide on the boot line. I removed the ide parameter and I just used linux text. The results I get are that a bunch of kernel messages appear then the background turns blue and a thin text box pops up saying its loading ata..... something it disappears too fast for me to read. Then the machine freezes. I pressed the alt function keys to see if I could look at the system log, here is what it says: Alt-f3 says "trying to mount CD device hda" Alt-f4 says status error: hda: lastFailedSense Hda: Failed opcode was: unknown Hda: Lost interrupt Hda: Drive not ready for command Ide-cd: command 0x3 timed out Above this junk it looks like it found the partition because it knew it was 20 GB and listed as /dev/sda3. I think it has something to do with the CD drive, is that possible? Thanks again for the support. PS I posted in the apple support forums ( Apple.com Support Discussions Boot Camp Installation and Storage) and didn't get an answer.
