  • Client-side or server-side processing?

    - by Nick
So, I'm new to dynamic web design (my sites have been mostly static with some PHP), and I'm trying to learn the latest technologies in web development (which seems to be AJAX), and I was wondering, if you're transferring a lot of data, is it better to construct the page on the server and "push" it to the user, or is it better to "pull" the data needed and create the HTML around it on the clientside using JavaScript? More specifically, I'm using CodeIgniter as my PHP framework, and jQuery for JavaScript, and if I wanted to display a table of data to the user (dynamically), would it be better to format the HTML using CodeIgniter (create the tables, add CSS classes to elements, etc..), or would it be better to just serve the raw data using JSON and then build it into a table with jQuery? My intuition says to do it clientside, as it would save bandwidth and the page would probably load quicker with the new JavaScript optimizations all these browsers have now, however, then the site would break for someone not using JavaScript... Thanks for the help

  • MVC View Model Intellesense / Compile error

    - by Marty Trenouth
I have one Library with my ORM and am working with a MVC Application. I have a problem where the pages won't compile because the Views can't see the Model's properties (which are inherited from lower level base classes). They system throws a compile error saying that 'object' does not contain a definition for 'ID' and no extension method 'ID' accepting a first argument of type 'object' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) implying that the View is not seeing the model. In the Controller I have full access to the Model and have check the Inherits from portion of the view to validate the correct type is being passed. Controller: return View(new TeraViral_Blog()); View: <%@ Page Title="" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<com.models.TeraViral_Blog>" %> <asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="TitleContent" runat="server"> Index2 </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server"> <h2>Index2</h2> <fieldset> <legend>Fields</legend> <p> ID: <%= Html.Encode(Model.ID) %> </p> </fieldset> </asp:Content>

  • What format do I use to store a relatively small amount of user data

    - by wcm
I am writing a small program for our local high school (pro bono). The program has an interface allows the user to enter school holidays. This is a simple stand alone Windows app. What format should I use to store the data? A big relational data is obviously overkill. My initial plan was to store the data in an XML file. Co-workers have been suggesting that I use JSON files, Access Databases, SQL Lite, and SQL Server Express. There was even a suggestion of old school INI files.

  • jQuery wait for ajax call to be over before continuing

    - by Flo
    Hi all, I have a problem with a jQuery ajax call. I need to wait for the call to be finished in order to return a value. However, the script seems to jump ahead and not wait for the call to be over. my function then returns "undefined". I have tried to use the .ajax() method and set the value of async to false, but this would not work either. I could I get my function to return the value that I could through the ajax call? Thank you! Here is the code: function get_rsrce_name(){ jQuery.post( '<?php echo admin_url( 'admin-ajax.php' ); ?>', { action :'my_action', option_rsrce : 'option_rsrce' }, function( data ) { output = data.option_name; }, "json" ); return output; }

  • return false for parent javascript function

    - by jeerose
$("#purchaser_contact").live('submit', function(){ $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: 'ajax/contactSearch.php', data: ({ fname: $("#fname").val(), lname: $("#lname").val(), city: $("#city").val(), state: $("#state").val() }), success: function(d) { var obj = JSON.parse( d ); if(obj.result != 0){ $("#contactSearch").remove(); $("#button-wrapper").before('<div id="contactSearch">' + obj.result + '</div>'); $("#contactSearch").slideToggle('slow'); //return false from submit!! }); }); I know there are other posts on this but I couldn't figure out how to apply them properly to my situation without making it messy. How do I return false on the submit event to prevent the form from submitting if I'm within the $.ajax and success functions? Thanks.

  • Unicode data from NSData to NSString

    - by Jeff
So if I have NSData from an HTTP request, then I do something like this: NSString *test = [[NSString alloc] initWithData:data encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]; This will result in null if the data contains weird unicode data (title is from reddit): {"title":"click..¦¦me..and..then¦¦________ ¦¦check¦¦_.your...¦¦.__...¦¦____ ¦¦....¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦....¦¦____ ¦¦¦¦¦¦....¦¦¦¦¦¦....¦¦¦¦¦¦____ ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦____ ....¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦______ ........¦¦..._recently....¦¦________ ....¦¦....viewed....links....¦¦_____"}, How would I convert the data to a string? Ideally, it would best if the string wasn't null so I could parse it as JSON, but even a lossy conversion is fine with me in these cases. I'm not familiar with unicode (naive American I am), so any enlightenment about that would be a nice bonus :)

  • AMF through a BinarySocket written in .net

    - by KensoDev
Hi All, I have a windows service behaving as a Binary Socket sending data to flex applications. Once I try to send strings or int's or any other native data-type, everything is working great. I even succeeded in sending JSon from the server to the client parsing it on Flex. I want to send AMF objects to the client. Meaning, I have a class called User, I want to fill it with data and send it to the client, there I want it to be mapped to an object on the client. How can I achieve this?

  • Addslashes, mysql_real_escape always adding two slashes?

    - by Zach
I'm having an issue with inserting JSON into a database, my intention is to take the variables, json_encode them, remove slashes (from magic_quotes), and then addslashes back in to escape the quotes in {"key":"value"} Unfortunately, strip_slashes on the encoded string isn't doing anything, and outputs this {"content":"<p>This string has it\'s downsides</p>","date":1271352514} I have then tried addslashes, and mysql_real_escape_string, both output "{\\"content\\":\\"<p>This string has it\\\'s downsides</p>\\",\\"date\\":1271352514}" I can't work out why it's adding in two slashes? And I'm tearing my hair out over this, everytime I try to stripslashes it leaves one in, and adding slashes adds two. Any help would be hugely appreciated!

  • How to programmatically launch a chromecast app from command line

    - by pushmatrix
I want to launch a Chromecast app but NOT using the chrome extension or iOS or Android. Doing this from command line. I noticed that you can send a POST to your chromecast, and it will launch an app. For example if I do curl -H “Content-Type: application/json” http://CHROMECAST_IP:8008/apps/YouTube -X POST -d ‘v=oHg5SJYRHA0' Then it will start up youtube. But for some reason I can't do this with custom apps (in dev mode). I thought I'd be able to send a POST to http://CHROMECAST_IP:8008/apps/MY_REGISTERED_APP_ID, but no luck. I just get a 404 response. Hmmm... My app is just a simple webpage (it is not streamed media). I want to run a little headless server that starts my chromecast app everyday via a CRON task. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

  • Cannot see response body in ie8 when response http status code is set to some error code(422)

    - by Deewendra Shrestha
I am making a requset to a web service that sends custom error with proper HTTP header when I notice some validation error, this works fine in chrome and mozilla as things always do and then it broke in ie8 as it always does! After checking the network activity, I see that ie8 is not able to get response body when HTTP code is other that 200(or at-least it seems so). In groovy I am returning error like : render(status: 422, contentType: 'TEXT', text: ((errors as JSON) as String)) Is there a way I could somehow get ie8 to read in the response body, or as an alternative I might be able to set response header but before trying that I was wondering if you guys have already seen this issue and know a solution to it. Thanks, Dee

  • How do I echo out something different when reached last row?

    - by Josh Brown
    I am wanting to not echo out the comma at the end of the echo after the last row. How can I do that? Here is my code: <?php header("Content-type: application/json"); echo '{"points":['; mysql_connect("localhost", "user", "password"); mysql_select_db("database"); $q = "SELECT venues.id, venues.lat, venues.lon, heat_indexes.temperature FROM venues, heat_indexes WHERE venues.id = heat_indexes.venue_id"; $res = mysql_query($q) or die(mysql_error()); while ($point = mysql_fetch_assoc($res)) { echo $point['lat'] . "," . $point['lon'] . "," . $point['temperature'] . ","; } mysql_free_result($res); echo ']}'; ?>

  • why does backbone not send the delete?

    - by Nippysaurus
I have a very basic backbone (sample) application which just creates and destroys model items. When the model is created the object is persisted with a POST to the web server, but when the model is destroyed there is no DELETE sent to the server? Any idea why this might be? very basic model: window.User = Backbone.Model.extend({ urlRoot: 'users' }); my test code just to create and delete the model: var model = null; $(".add").click(function(){ if (model == null) { model = new window.User; model.set({name: 'meeee'}); model.save(); } }); $(".remove").click(function(){ if (model != null) { model.destroy(); } }); The JSON response when creating the model seems good too:

  • Embedded Record is not getting loaded in Ember.js

    - by Venky
    Following is the JSON data I am trying to load using ember-data: { "product" : [ { "id" : 1, "name" : "product1", "master" : { "id" : 1, "name" : "product1", "images" : [ { "id" : 1, "productUrl" : "/images/product1_1.jpg" }, { "id" : 2, "productUrl" : "/images/product1_2.jpg" } ] } }, { "id" : 2, "name" : "product2", "master" : { "id" : 2, "name" : "product2", "images" : [ { "id" : 3, "productUrl" : "/images/product2_1.jpg" }, { "id" : 4, "productUrl" : "/images/product2_2.jpg" } ] } } ] } The models are as follows: App.Product = DS.Model.extend name: DS.attr('string') description: DS.attr('string') master: DS.belongsTo('master') App.Master = DS.Model.extend images: DS.hasMany('image') App.Image = DS.Model.extend productUrl: DS.attr('string') The Application Serializer code is as follows: App.ApplicationSerializer = DS.ActiveModelSerializer.extend(DS.EmbeddedRecordsMixin, attrs: { images: { embedded : 'always' } master: { embedded : 'always' } } ) The problem is that the "master" model records are being returned empty. • jQuery-Ui Ajax Tabs bug?

    - by vsync
I have a JSON that returns from the server which tabs to build, so I init them in my JS like this: $('#tabs').tabs( 'ajaxOptions', { timeout: 20000, error: function(xhr, status, index, anchor){ console.log( status, index, anchor ); } }) .tabs('add', item.CategoryLink, item.CategoryName); Thing is, when I click a tab, and before it is done loading I click another tab, the previous request is aborted and never called again when I click that first one again! this is very bad, because it obviously didn't fetch the request, so what gives? I tried bypassing this by setting: .tabs({ cache: false }) but this is a bad thing to do, because I don't want to have a request each time again... it should be cachced if response was sent. using jquery-ui 1.8.1

  • Handling Exceptions that happen in a asp.net MVC Controller Constructor

    - by Jason
What's the best way to handle exceptions that happen from within a controller's constructor? All I can think of to do is use Application_OnError() or put a try/catch in my ControllerFactory. Neither of these solutions seem ideal. Application_OnError is to broad - I have some non-mvc content in the site that has its own error handling. Using a try/catch block seems kinda hacky. If I'm serving different content type -html/text/json/rss.... I would like to be able to handle the exception from within the action method instead of having to write all kinds of conditions to determine what kind of error message to serve. Am I missing something here, or has anyone else dealt with this?

  • Automatic database generation / migration with perl

    - by pistacchio
Hi, In Ror or Django or web2py you can "describe" a database (as a set of classes that remaps to tables) and the framework (having being provided with a connection string to the desired database) generates the tables, fields, relations and in the case of RoR and web2py it also keeps it up-to-date (eg, removing a class drops the table, adding a property to the class triggers an "alter table add" etc). Is there any perl module that does the same? Eg, it takes the YAML / XML / JSON description of a database as input and modifies / generates the database accordingly? Thanks in advance.

  • How to solve generic algebra using solver/library programmatically? Matlab, Mathematica, Wolfram etc?

    - by DevDevDev
I'm trying to build an algebra trainer for students. I want to construct a representative problem, define constraints and relationships on the parameters, and then generate a bunch of Latex formatted problems from the representation. As an example: A specific question might be: If y < 0 and (x+3)(y-5) = 0, what is x? Answer (x = -3) I would like to encode this as a Latex formatted problem like. If $y<0$ and $(x+constant_1)(y+constant_2)=0$ what is the value of x? Answer = -constant_1 And plug into my problem solver constant_1 > 0, constant_1 < 60, constant_1 = INTEGER constant_2 < 0, constant_2 > -60, constant_2 = INTEGER Then it will randomly construct me pairs of (constant_1, constant_2) that I can feed into my Latex generator. Obviously this is an extremely simple example with no real "solving" but hopefully it gets the point across. Things I'm looking for ideally in priority order * Solve algebra problems * Definition of relationships relatively straight forward * Rich support for latex formatting (not just writing encoded strings) Thanks!

  • My Ruby Code: How can I improve? (Java to Ruby guy)

    - by steve
Greetings, I get the feeling that I'm using ruby in an ugly way and possibly missing out on tonnes of useful features. I was wondering if anyone could point out a cleaner better way to write my code which is pasted here. The code itself simply scrapes some data from yelp and processes it into a json format. The reason I'm not using hash.to_json is because it throws some sort of stack error which I can only assume is due to the hash being too large (It's not particularly large). Response object = a hash text = the output which saves to file Anyways guidance appreciated. def mineLocation client = Yelp::Client.new request = Yelp::Review::Request::GeoPoint.new(:latitude=>13.3125,:longitude => -6.2468,:yws_id => 'nicetry') response = client.search(request) response['businesses'].length.times do |businessEntry| text ="" response['businesses'][businessEntry].each { |key, value| if value.class == Array value.length.times { |arrayEntry| text+= "\"#{key}\":[" value[arrayEntry].each { |arrayKey,arrayValue| text+= "{\"#{arrayKey}\":\"#{arrayValue}\"}," } text+="]" } else text+="\"#{arrayKey}\":\"#{arrayValue}\"," end } end end

  • Problem with displaying image from DB using asp.net MVC 2

    - by Renato
Hello! I'm having trouble with displaying image from db. I think that method for saving image is working, because I see in DB that varbinary fields have some value, and that image type is correct. Also the size of image. But when I want to display image for product i don't get anything. Just blank space.. here is my code... public byte[] GetImage(int productID) { Product product = products.GetByID(productID); byte[] imageData = product.ImageData.ToArray(); return imageData; } That code is in my controller. Second is code from view : <% if (product.ImageData != null) { %> <img src='/product/getimage/<%= Html.Encode(product.ID) %>' alt=""/> <% } %> I tried some solutions found here on stack overflow, and everyone do it like this, but it's working for them. I dont have any idea why images aren't displayed. When i look at source code of page at debugging i have : <img src='/product/getimage/18' alt=""/> I'm using .net 4.0, MVC 2, VS 2010... Thanks in advance

  • What is your favorite programming discussion forum, channel, or chat?

    - by DV
I think Stackoverflow is a great resource for programmers, but a lot of times free discussion and experimentation help find answers as quickly. I personally used Slicehost's forums a lot for setting up a Linux as a server. A quick search on Google turns up many results, but how to guess where to find the right people? In essence, are there communities out there where one can discuss and collaborate with great people similar to Stackoverflow audience? I am interested in multitude of topics, from PHP/ASP/Perl to C++/C#/Python, from SQL/XML/HTML/JSON to Javascript/Flash/Silverlight.

  • Get jQuery Error if PHP Breaks

    - by Norbert
I have a PHP script that breaks if a variable is not populated and it isn't added to the database, but jQuery handles this as a success and I get this error: TypeError: Result of expression 'data' [null] is not an object. • PUT parameters not working in python / google app engine

    - by magegu
hi, i'm working on a simple RESTful webservice with python with the webapp framework on the google app engine. Basically i'm sending all request via AJAX/jquery - for POST it works like a charm, but when I'm sending data with PUT, the parameters are empty / not processed. this is my PUT: $.ajax({ type: "PUT", url: "/boxes", data: { name: this.name, archived: this.archived }, success: function(msg){ } }); firebug saids i'm putting: Parameter application/x-www-form-urlencoded archived false name 123112323asdasd but using this python code: from google.appengine.ext import webapp from google.appengine.ext.webapp import util, template from google.appengine.ext import db from google.appengine.api.datastore_types import * from django.utils import simplejson as json import cgi import datetime class BoxHandler(webapp.RequestHandler): def post(self): #working print "test" self.response.out.write(self.request.get("name")) def put(self): print "test" #not working self.response.out.write(self.request.get("name")) will just return test Status: 200 OK Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Cache-Control: no-cache Expires: Fri, 01 Jan 1990 00:00:00 GMT Content-Length: 0 so .. hm, is there anything i'm missing here? cheers, Martin

  • JMeter CSV Data Set is corrupting Japanese strings stored as proper UTF-8, I get Question Marks instead

    - by Mark Bennett
I read in search terms from a simple text file to send to a search engine. It works fine in English, but gives me ???? for any Japanese text. Text with mixed English and Japanese does show the English text, so I know it's reading it. What I'm seeing: Input text: Snow Leopard ??????????????? Turns into: Snow Leopard ??????????????? This is in my POST field of an HTTP. If I set JMeter to encode the data, it just puts in the percent sequence for question marks. Interesting note: In the example above there are 15 Japanese characters, and then 15 question marks, so at some point it's being seen as full characters and not just bytes. About the Data: The CSV file is very simple in structure. There's only one field / one column, which I name TERM, and later use as ${TERM} I don't really need full CSV because it's only one string per line. There's no commas or quotes. When I run the Unix "file" command on the file, it says UTF-8 text. I've also verified it in command line and graphical mode on two machines. JMeter CSV Dataset Config: Filename: japanese-searches.csv File encoding: UTF-8 (also tried without) Variable names: TERM Delimiter: , Allow Quoted Data: False (I also tried True, different, but still wrong) Recycle at EOF: True Stop at EOF: False Staring mode: All threads A few things I've tried: Tried Allow quoted Data. It changed to other strange characters. -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8 Tried encoding the POST, but it just turned into a bunch of %nn for question marks And I'm not sure how "debug" just after the each line of the CSV is read in. I think it's corrupted right away, but I'm not sure. If it's only mangled when I reference it, then instead of ${TERM} perhaps there's some other "to bytes" function call. I'll start checking into that. I haven't done anything with the JMeter functions yet.

  • App-Engine Parse a UrlFetch UTF-8 encoded stream

    - by Davidrd91
I am trying to parse an XML from a URL using the xml.sax parser. I know there are other libraries to use but coming from Java this is the one I am most familiar with and seems the least complicated to me. The code I'm using to parse is as follows: parser = xml.sax.make_parser() handler = MangaHandler() parser.setContentHandler(handler) url = urlfetch.Fetch('http://www.mangapanda.com/alphabetical', allow_truncated = False, follow_redirects = False, deadline = False) xml.sax.parseString(url.content, handler) This returns a SaxException (invalid token) once the parser reaches the first & sign: SAXParseException: <unknown>:582:34: not well-formed (invalid token) Because urlfetch returns a string and not a stream I cannot use the parse() (which only works with streams) and am left to use parseString() instead. To see if parsing as a stream would fix this I tried: parser.parse(io.StringIO(url.content).encode('utf-8')) but this returns: TypeError: initial_value must be unicode or None, not str I have also tried to use the urllib2 libraries which do return a stream instead of urlfetch but the file is too large and is automatically truncated, leaving me with missing data. Any Sort of work-around for this would be greatly appreciated as I've spent days getting around one obstacle just to be stopped by another.
