  • How to optimize this user ranking query

    - by James Simpson
I have 2 databases (users, userRankings) for a system that needs to have rankings updated every 10 minutes. I use the following code to update these rankings which works fairly well, but there is still a full table scan involved which slows things down with a few hundred thousand users. mysql_query("TRUNCATE TABLE userRankings"); mysql_query("INSERT INTO userRankings (userid) SELECT id FROM users ORDER BY score DESC"); mysql_query("UPDATE users a, userRankings b SET a.rank = b.rank WHERE a.id = b.userid"); In the userRankings table, rank is the primary key and userid is an index. Both tables are MyISAM (I've wondered if it might be beneficial to make userRankings InnoDB).

  • iphone simulator crashes when it tries to access user location

    - by kevin Mendoza
for some reason my code causes my program to crash. does anyone know why or how to fix it? NSLog(@"here"); CLLocation *location = [locationManager location]; [mapView removeAnnotations:mapView.annotations]; NSUserDefaults *defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; CLLocationCoordinate2D workingCoordinate = [location coordinate]; NSLog(@" this is %@", workingCoordinate.latitude); it makes it to the first NSLog, but somewhere between the first and second it crashes. My guess is that it has to do with the CLLocation *location line.

  • Android "first time" app user tutorial

    - by EGHDK
I'm trying to create an opening tutorial that consists of four panes for my application, but since I'm new to Android, I want to make sure I'm considering all of my options before marking this task as "complete". I know of three ways, I can only really accomplish one. There are no requirements for this tutorial, but some "wanted features" would be a sliding action to each pane would be nice as well as the image and the bottom (navigation circles) not moving and the title on top not moving. One Way 4 separate activities and 4 separate layouts The red circled items are textViews that are centered horizontally and pushed off the top. The white circled items are imageViews that are centered horizontally and vertically. The purple circled are imageViews that are centered horizontally and pushed off the bottom. Second Way 4 fragments on one activity Fragments were difficult to learn, but the more I read about them/see tutorials on them, they seem to only really be used for tablets. Would it be a valid way to accomplish this? Third Way ViewPager? http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2011/08/horizontal-view-swiping-with-viewpager.html I've never used this before, but I know it's an option. Final Question Which way is used more often/what's the proper way to implement this? Is there any way to only have the middle part (the image) slide in, but the title (top) and the navigation images (bottom) just change once the image slides in?

  • User reactions to WYSIWYM

    - by David
I am trying to decide between a WYSIWYG editor (e.g. TinyMCE, CKEditor) and a WYSIWYM (What You See Is What You Mean) editor (e.g. WMD) for my web application. There is a thread on stackoverflow that compares the two approaches. I would like to know how users, particularly computer novices, have reacted to WYSIWYM editors in deployed web applications. It could be that computer novices are confused by WYSIWYM editors, preferring the immediacy of WYSIWYG; but is that born out in real-world applications? It's not theory I'm asking about here, but empirical evidence of the acceptance or otherwise of WYSIWYM.

  • Importance of verifying user email on web signup

    - by sunwukung
I know this question is crazy - but my employers client is demanding that email verification be removed from the sign up process (they feel it is impeding sign up). I wanted to garner feedback from the programming community at large as to their experience and opinions regarding sign up and email verification - and the possible consequences of removing this safeguard.

  • date representation in user interface

    - by Samuel
Most of the sites capture the date (e.g. birth date) information as either a single entity (i.e via a calendar control) or instead as separate fields (date, month, year). Are there any benefits in showing them as separate fields? Are they represented in the database as DATE data type or as separate fields. I am just trying to understand the pros & cons of representing the date field.

  • user notification while waiting

    - by user315445
I am writing a simple win forms app in C#. There is a method call in my method which loads files but is taking a while to respond. Below is the method call Directory.GetFiles(selectedFolder, "*.xml", SearchOption.AllDirectories); I want to notify this to users. Is there a way to show them that file loading is in progress? I want a simplest way. I suppose Splash screen is too costly for my app.

  • Make an element visible to the user but invisible to events

    - by Acorn
I'm not quite sure how to describe what I'm looking to do, but I'll do my best. At the moment I have a parent <div>, with absolutely positioned child <div>s within it, and I'm tracking the mouse pointer location coordinates relative to the element your mouse is over. At the moment, when I mouse over my child <div>s, I get the mouse location relative to them, but I want the coordinates to be relative the the parent <div> even when mousing over the child elements. So I basically want the child elements to be visible, but transparent to the mousemove, so I want the mousemove to go straight through to the parent element. How would I do this? Do I maybe need to somehow make the parent <div> be in the forground but still have the child <div>s show through? or make a transparent <div> overlay just to get the mouse coordinates? Here's a link to the page I'm experimenting on: http://acorn.host22.com/mouse.html

  • Best Practice: User generated HTML cleaning

    - by Martin
I'm coding a WYSIWYG editor width designMode="on" on a iframe. The editor works fine and i store the code as is in the database. Before outputing the html i need to "clean" with php on the server-side to avoid cross-site-scripting and other scary things. Is there some sort of best practice on how to do this? What tags can be dangerous? UPDATE: Typo fixed, it's What You See Is What You Get. Nothing new :)

  • Python: User-Defined Exception That Proves The Rule

    - by bandana
Python documentations states: Exceptions should typically be derived from the Exception class, either directly or indirectly. the word 'typically' leaves me in an ambiguous state. consider the code: class good(Exception): pass class bad(object): pass Heaven = good() Hell = bad() >>> raise Heaven Traceback (most recent call last): File "<pyshell#163>", line 1, in <module> raise Heaven good >>> raise Hell Traceback (most recent call last): File "<pyshell#171>", line 1, in <module> raise Hell TypeError: exceptions must be classes or instances, not bad so when reading the python docs, should i change 'typically' with ''? what if i have a class hierarchy that has nothing to do with the Exception class, and i want to 'raise' objects belonging to the hierarchy? i can always raise an exception with an argument: raise Exception, Hell This seems slightly awkward to me What's so special about the Exception class, that only its family members can be raised?

  • JS Display Content based on Dropdown User input

I am working on a search box that displays different options based on a users selection via dropdown box. Basically I need a really clean, light-weight method for switching out different divs without reloading the page. Im new to JS, but I know enough that there should be some really simple way of setting the display property using JS - Im just not totally sure how to go about it. Any help would be really appreciated, thanks.

  • Android Simple way for User Color Selections

    - by miannelle
How can you change application colors on the fly? I am currently using the following to change the background: LinearLayout mScreen = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.main); mScreen.setBackgroundColor( mycolor ); I tried to use Style's to change the text using: @color/white The problem is that Spinners/Buttons and Spinner-Popup-Lists all change to white text as well, making them unreadable. I have over 20 Classes in my app that all need to be able to change color combination's.

  • Go - Using a map for its set properties with user defined types

    - by Seth Hoenig
    I'm trying to use the built-in map type as a set for a type of my own (Point, in this case). The problem is, when I assign a Point to the map, and then later create a new, but equal point and use it as a key, the map behaves as though that key is not in the map. Is this not possible to do? // maptest.go package main import "fmt" func main() { set := make(map[*Point]bool) printSet(set) set[NewPoint(0, 0)] = true printSet(set) set[NewPoint(0, 2)] = true printSet(set) _, ok := set[NewPoint(3, 3)] // not in map if !ok { fmt.Print("correct error code for non existent element\n") } else { fmt.Print("incorrect error code for non existent element\n") } c, ok := set[NewPoint(0, 2)] // another one just like it already in map if ok { fmt.Print("correct error code for existent element\n") // should get this } else { fmt.Print("incorrect error code for existent element\n") // get this } fmt.Printf("c: %t\n", c) } func printSet(stuff map[*Point]bool) { fmt.Print("Set:\n") for k, v := range stuff { fmt.Printf("%s: %t\n", k, v) } } type Point struct { row int col int } func NewPoint(r, c int) *Point { return &Point{r, c} } func (p *Point) String() string { return fmt.Sprintf("{%d, %d}", p.row, p.col) } func (p *Point) Eq(o *Point) bool { return p.row == o.row && p.col == o.col }
