• Problem booting hard drive after installing Centos from USB Stick

  Here is the situation, I created a Centos Live 5.4 Bootable USB drive. I used this to install Centos on a HP Netbook. BTW: the Netbook doesn't have a CDRom so I used the usb key. When the system goes to write the Grub boot loader to disk, it wants to write the boot loader to the usb drive (/dev/sda), not the hard disk (/dev/hda). I do have the option of writing the boot loader to /dev/hda, (not to the mbr!) but when I reboot I get an load error and the Grub prompt. How can I get Centos booting from the hard disk instead of using the USB key. Thanks.

• How can I to take an HDMI TV broadcast and overlay text in real time?

  Our company wants to be able to have LCD TVs displaying TV with the ability to add an overlay, like a stock ticker at the bottom of the screen, where human resources can add content to be displayed. I have been trying to nail down the correct terminology for this and come across terms like Keying, Compositing, Live Broadcast Graphics Presentation, and Hardware Overlay but I don't know which of these terms is truly the correct way to refer to what I am trying to do. Black Magic offers a product that seems like it can do what I am looking for but their product seems like it is geared for a totally different purpose than what I would be using it for. Compix also seems to have a product that would do what I need but again it seems like killing a fly with a sledge hammer. How can I to take an HDMI TV broadcast and overlay arbitrary content in real time?

• Barring connections if VPN is down.

  I have a VPN account and use it for sensitive communication. However the VPN connection sometimes is dropped while my main connection to the internet is still alive. The pages I visit through VPN are on HTTP (not secure) and have javascript code which pings the host every minute or so on a timer. So it happens sometimes that the VPN connection is dropped and yet js sends a request to the server (with the cookies). How could I restrict connections so they only happen if the VPN is live? • Does Cisco anyconnect replace original network connection session?

  When using Cisco anyconnect VPN, it seems the existing network connection is still going through old connection session (Is there any way to find out)? The reason is because when using Cisco VPN client connect to gateway, usually the Messenger Live, Skype will be disconnected and requires to reconnect. But using anyconnect doesn't need to reconnect. So I am guessing if those old sessions still go through original network connection. Which means, both connection is existing at the same time. Take my case for example: connection 1: wireless NIC - cable modem - my cable ISP - internet connection 2: anyconnect - wireless NIC - cable modem - my cable ISP - VPN gateway - internet Am I correct? Is there any way to check this? Thanks.

  Hi folks, I'm using Fiddler/FireBug to debug some of our live server web content. We're getting a lot of :- X-Cache: MISS from X-Cache-Lookup: MISS from :8080 Via: 1.1 :8080 (squid/2.7.STABE3) I thought i knew a lot about cache-control / expires / last-modified / etags, etc.. but maybe not. So .. is there a way I can run squid in some verbose way to see why it thinks a resource which i request, is cached/is not getting cached, etc.. which is why we're getting MISSes back? cheers :)

• IM and File Transfers Integrated With VoIP

  I have an Asterisk box serving an office of people. I'd like to provide instant messaging and file sharing capabilities alongside the voice and video capabilities provided by Asterisk (ala Windows Live Messenger, Skype etc). Asterisk does not seem to offer IM outside the context of a SIP call, nor am I aware that it provides file transferring capabilities whatsoever. The clients will be using Jitsi, so there are many protocols to choose from, but I'd like to provide as much integration as possible between the VoIP and IM/file transfer (ideally a single account that facilitates voice/video and IM/file transfer). Is this possible, and if not, what would be the most appropriate alternative? Thank you.

• How to get started setting up IP security cameras

  I have just finished renovating my house. As part of the job, I have cat6 cable run through the house, including two external plugs. All cables terminate in the same location. My rough plan is to plug two IP cameras to monitor the front and rear, run POE from a central router to the two external cameras, plug my PC into the same router and run magic software X. Any machine plugged into the router or wirelessly connection should then be able to get a live feed and alerts based on motion detection. That's the plan, but I'm not sure how possible it is. What hardware to get and what monitoring software to get. Has anyone does something similar? What were your experiences?

  I'd like to setup a squid instance to do selective reverse proxy for a configured list of URLs whilst acting as a normal forward proxy for everything else. We are building new infrastructure, parallel live as it where, and I want to have a proxy that people can use that will force selective traffic into the new platform whilst just acting as a forward proxy for anything else. This makes it very easy for people/systems to test the portions of the new platform we want without having to change too much, just use a proxy address. Is such a setup possible ?

• Color Calibrate Dual Monitor XP SP2

  This topic has been touched on before but not really answered. I have a dual monitor system and the colors differ wildly. I currently live Buenos Aires where color correction hardware costs premium prices. I do some graphic design, but don't require a pro-level calibration. That said, I'd like my monitors to be set as close to "true color" as possible. I've located the useful and free Monitor Calibration Wizard, but it seems to adjust the entire system internally at startup. I could use the Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet to set a different ICC or ICM profile for each monitor, but the Monitor Calibration Wizard outputs its own format for profiles.

• Redundant APC UPS units, single server set up

  Hi All We have a very simple set up, looking for a very simple (reliable) solution: Setup: One Dell box with redundant power supplies running Windows 2003, plugged into two separate APC SmartUPS 1500 units (USB, no smart cards) on two separate circuits. Solution required: IF (UPS1 = Low) AND (UPS2 = Low) THEN: Shutdown gracefully ELSE: DO NOTHING!! APCUPSD only allowes for one instance (and therefore one UPS) in a windows environment. PowerChute can't do this without using APC Smart Cards which means utilizing our switch, but the switch does not have redundant power supplies, so it will only live for as long as one of the two UPS units. And no, i don't have the budget to buy two smart cards pluse a switch with redundancy ;) Thanks

• Is it possible to have non-English regional settings with English day/month names?

  I live in Estonia where most regional settings (number, currency and date formats) differ from those used in English-speaking countries. For instance, decimal symbol is comma, thousands separator is space, date format is day-month-year, etc. However, if I set my regional settings to Estonian, then day and month names are also shown in Estonian everywhere: This is slightly annoying since the language used for the rest of Windows is English and I'd like the day and month names to be consistent with it. Is this possible while still keeping the local regional settings? One workaround I've tried is to set regional settings to, say, English (UK) and then customise them to match Estonian settings, but that messes up alphabetic sorting - accented letters like "ö" and "ä" are no longer distinguished from their non-accented versions, and "z" is sorted as last rather than at its correct position in the Estonian alphabet (between "s" and "t"). OS is Windows 7 Professional, in case that matters. Edit: alternatively, if there's no built-in way to accomplish what I want, is it possible to create a custom set of regional settings (like one can create custom keyboard layouts)?

• Sfsync04 file is corrupted

  I don't know exactly what I did, but somehow the sfsync04.sys (drivers) file is corrupt, and now I can't start my windows. That's the error startup repair gives me, and it is unable to correct it automatically. I'm currently running a live version of Ubuntu, so I can access my files, and everything seems to be alright except for the sfsync04.sys file. Is there a way I can repair that file so I can avoid reinstalling Windows for now? I'm running windows 7 64 bits. The file is in windows\system32\drivers\ . I think this happened when I tried to install some legacy software, but I'm not sure.

  Hi, I have/(had) windows xp on one partition of my hdd. on second i installed ubuntu 9.10 yesterday. and after reboot of windows xp i get error "GRUB LOADING.". now i know that you can play around with that using live GRUB and all. putting GRUB on top of MBR or etc etc. something like that. i want to know - if i reinstall Ubuntu 10.04 which is available now - will it give me still the same error? or i will be able to use both OS? (i.e. is that problem solved in version 10.04 or still there? and if it is solved reinstallation of ubuntu will solve the problem or not?) anyhelp is welcome. Thanks

My guess is html, css, javascript, and php, and photoshop and dreamweaver, and sql. And being familiar with using a web host to have sites live, like knowing how to use cpanel. It's probably a very inaccurate and narrow guess but that's what i think right now. I don't know exactly.

• How to step down voltage from 208V to 110V

  I have some racks that will be fed by 208V/20A circuits. These circuits will be conditioned and battery-backed by the facility in which these racks will live. 99% of the devices in the rack will be able to support 208V input, so I plan to use these PDUs. However, there may be one or two odd devices that will need 110V input. I know that I can use a step-down transformer to provide 110V for these devices, but that seems like overkill for such a small number of devices, plus I don't want to pay extra for the UPS functionality since my power will already be battery-backed. Any suggestions for something I can use for these one-off 110V devices?

• VisualSVN Server won't work with AD, will with local accounts

  Decided recently to switch VisualSVN from local users to AD users, so we could easily add other employees. I added myself, gave Read/Write privileges across the whole repo, and then tried to log in. Whether I'm using tortoisesvn or the web client, I get a 403 Forbidden error: You don't have permission to access /svn/main/ on this server. I Googled a bit, but only found mention of phantom groups in the authz file. I don't have any of those. Any ideas? It works just fine with local accounts. EDIT: Don't know why I didn't try this earlier, but adding the domain before the username makes it work, ie MAIN/Bob. This normally only works when there are conflicting usernames...one local, one in AD, but for whatever reason it works here too. Kinda silly, but I can live with it.

  I purchased a new server with a few ip's so I modified the /etc/network/interfaces file recently so that my ip's can go live. While editing that file I created a backup and deleted the original file. I recreated the interfaces file using the touch command and gave +x permissions but now, when trying to restart the interface (/etc/network/interfaces restart) I get all sorts of errors: /etc/network/interfaces: line 10: iface: command not found /etc/network/interfaces: line 11: address: command not found /etc/network/interfaces: line 12: netmask: command not found /etc/network/interfaces: line 13: auto: command not found Can any1 point what I forgot to do? • Resize ntfs system partitions with GParted?

  Trying to resize 2 ntfs system and boot partitions (windows 2003 server) using GParted. Goal: Resize D: (/dev/sda1) to ~850G - this is the boot drive with D:\ntldr, boot.ini, etc. Resize C: (/dev/sda5) to 100G - this is the system drive with C:\windows Tried resizing /dev/sda5 first and got the chkdsk error shown in screenshot #2. (You must run chkdsk /f). Have already run chkdsk /f on C: multiple times with no bad sectors or errors found. Have also run multiple chkdsk /f's on the underlying hard disk multiple times and rebooted way more than a couple times with the same error. How do you force gparted to ignore this error and resize? I found there is --force option to ntfsresize but don't know how to get the GParted ISO live CD to use it. How do you move the unallocated space so an extra ~750G is to the right of /dev/sda1 (D:), and an extra 10G to the right of /dev/sda5 (C:)

  I purchased an Apple TV for my parents and I have a netflix account. My parents live overseas, and I was wondering if they could use my account to get it to work. I read that it won't work unless you use proxies or a VPN, so I was wondering if its possible for me to setup a VPN to my network in the US instead of paying a service like StrongVPN? Setup: Router in US - Airport Extreme Router abroad - D-link (not sure of model) I know that the AppleTV doesn't have a built-in VPN client, maybe eventually when its jailbroken there will be an app, but as of now I'll have to use the routers right? • IE I-Frame 1px border to the right

  Please look at http://www.mymix947.com In the header i have a 1px border to the right of the banner. You will see a black line dividing the banner and listen live button. This is an i-frame and I can't seem to eliminate the line. • Camtasia on remote computer?

  I have a need to use one laptop for a live presentation (with projector, etc.), but record that presentation on another laptop -- similar to what I can do with Camtasia, only with the recording happening on another laptop. Is this possible? What do I need to do this? Some VGA device that goes between the presenting machine and the projector? Some USB device? My ideal requirements: The machines must be "standard" laptops (so I can't just add a new card to a desktop, etc.). I prefer a hardware solution, but cannot involve studio type equipment. I'd prefer not to install Camtasia (or similar) on the presenting machine for two reasons: licensing issues performance issues (sometimes the presentations are machine intensive and I don't want the recording software to interfere with the presentation) I'd appreciate any tips. • Flash stream makes my internet slow and cpu rush

  When I try to watch a live Flash stream, my CPU usage goes up to 75% and my Internet speed goes down. If I run a test before the video-stream, my speed is ~40/10Mbps and during the stream it drops to 0.1-0.5Mbps. The stream is laggy and I can only watch one to two seconds at a time, start/stop/start/stop. I have cleared my history, cache, cookies, temp files, and so on. I have searched for malware and took care of that. I have updated my drivers, reinstalled Flash and everything else I can think of, but it remains slow. I had this problem before and it just started working normally from one day to another. Could it be a hardware problem?

• Trigger ZFS dedup one-off scan/rededup

  I have a ZFS filesystems which has been running for some time and I recently had the opportunity to upgrade it (finally!) to the latest ZFS version. Our data doesn't scream dedup but I firmly believe based on small tests that we could gain anywhere from 5-10% of our space back for free by utilizing it. I have enabled dedup on the filesystem and new files are slowly being dedupified but the majority (95%+) of our data already exists on the filesystem. Short of moving the data off-pool and then recopying it back, is there any way to trigger a dedup scan of existing data? It doesn't have to be asynchronous or live. (And FYI there isn't enough room on the pool to copy the entire filesystem to another and then just switch the mounts.)
