Manipulating excel "autoshapes" with VBA

I am trying to write a macro in VBA (Excel) that is assigned to a Checkbox. Whenever the checkbox is clicked, an "autoshape" will change its "order" from "Send to Back" to "Send to Front". Basically, I am trying to create a dashboard with multiple panels, so that users can access information without moving between sheets. Each panel will have a rectangular autoshape as its background and the components of the panel will be "grouped" within the autoshape. Can this be done? I would greatly appreciate any ideas into writing the code. Thanks,

Excel plugin: Finding a Chart's Source Data Number Format String

I'm currently working on a plugin for excel (using VB.net--not VBA) that will attempt (among other things) to recognize the format of the source data of a chart and configure the chart's series' number format strings appropriately. That is, yearly data should always be two numbers, monthly data should always be a 3-letter month followed by a 2-digit year, etc. The goal is to have a uniform representation across all charts for monthly data, annual data, daily data, etc. My question is this: how do I find the number format string for the cells (or any cell that is part of that series, as I will be assuming all cells that make up a particular series have the same format) that represent the source data for the chart? Note: I can assume that the chart will always point to a range of cells (not, for example, an array of data).

Calculating percentiles in Excel with "buckets" data instead of the data list itself

I have a bunch of data in Excel that I need to get certain percentile information from. The problem is that instead of having the data set made up of each value, I instead have info on the number of or "bucket" data. For example, imagine that my actual data set looks like this: 1,1,2,2,2,2,3,3,4,4,4 The data set that I have is this: Value No. of occurrences 1 2 2 4 3 2 4 3 Is there an easy way for me to calculate percentile information (as well as the median) without having to explode the summary data out to full data set? (Once I did that, I know that I could just use the Percentile(A1:A5, p) function) This is important because my data set is very large. If I exploded the data out, I would have hundreds of thousands of rows and I would have to do it for a couple of hundred data sets. Help!

EXCEL import to sql returning NULL for decimals when in VARCHAR data type

Hi, I am working on a peice of software which has expodentially grown over the last few years and the database needs to be regularly updated. Customers are providing us with data now on large spreadsheets which we format and will start importing into the database. I am using the Import and Export Data (32-bit) Wizard. One column in the database contains values like '1.1.1.2' etc and i am importing them in as a Varchar as that is the data type in the database. However, for values like '8.5', 'NULL' is getting imported insead. It only occurs when there is one decimal point. Is this a formatting error with excel or is it the wrong datatype?

Force column order, Excel data table

I have a Excel Workbook that I use as a report template. I change the datasource on each pivot and datatable in a C# app. When I change the datatable datasource it tweeks the columns. HI All, If I have a PivotTable in Excel 2007 with a date field. I understand that I can group the date by day, month or even year using Group Field (Years & Months). If I combine with product perspective, the PivotTable may look like this Sum of Sales_Total | Column Labels Row Labels | PRODUCT-001 | PRODUCT-002 | Grand Total - 2006 | 2000 | 1500 | 3500 Jan | 1700 | 800 | 2500 Feb | 300 | 700 | 1000 - 2007 | 1000 | 1500 | 2500 Jan | 700 | 800 | 1500 Feb | 300 | 700 | 1000 - 2008 | 600 | 700 | 1300 Jan | 600 | 700 | 1300 Now, what I want to do is to compare Jan 2008 - Jan 2006 and Jan 2007 - Jan 2006. When I open the spreadsheet in Excel, the value is still in cell B3 despite the cell.ClearContents(). Any thoughts?

Does anyone know how i can find similar descriptions in excel and replace them with 1 other description is there a wild card? i am. trying to make a pivot chart with a list of transactions and their descriptions and i want to group all my ATM withdrwls but i cant. On the pivot chart they appear as ATM Withdrwal-REF-1234 and each of these "withdrwls" have different reference and as a result they show up as individual items on the chart...how can i group say all my ATM withdrwals as 1 ATM Withrdawl item so that it shows a 1 atm withdrwl item on my pivot chart?

MS SQL Server Dates Excel

I have data this is linked from SQL Server into an excel document. The column format on the SQL Server is datetime2. When I get the data via an ODBC connection it comes across as a string? I tried using CAST(column AS DATE ) but that didn't work. I tried reformatting via CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), column, 103) as well but that didn't work. I tried retrieving the data via Microsoft query as well but that didn't work. At the moment I am using VBA code like: While (ActiveCell.Value <> "") ActiveCell.Value = DATEVALUE(ActiveCell.Value) ActiveCell.Offset(1,0).Activate Wend and looping through each column that needs this treatment but 100000 rows in multiple columns takes forever to loop through. Are there any alternatives?

Hi, Can some one recommend any free program which counts the number of clicks Clicked inside a cell. For Example Imagine something like Spreadsheet I click on A1 cell the value shows 1 Then I click A1 cell again the value shows 2 and so on If I click A3 cell somewhere in between the click count on Cell A3 shows 1 and so on If something like this can be achieved as a macro with in excel (2003 please) please suggest or any other free program that you might be aware about, please do let me know. Importing data from many excel workbooks and sheets into a single workbook/table

Hi, I have 54 excel files with three sheets each, each sheet has a different amount of data entries but they are set out in a identical format, and I need to import the data from those sheets into a single workbook using VBA. Is there any way I can program it so I can build the loops to import the data, but without having to write in each workbook name for each loop/sheet? I think I can use the call function, but I don't know how to make the loop codes independent of the workbook name they apply to. Thank you so much in advance, Millie

Hi all, I've struggling to find a way to get and change and excel 2007 workbook connection (Menu Data - Existing Connections - Connections on this Workbook).It's a connection (several actually) to a SQL Server and used in a pivot table. I've tried using Application.ActiveWorkbook.Connections or Globals.ThisWorkbook.Connections but they both return always Null..I've tried in an sheet event as well as in a custom ribbon's button event as well. The only way left I can think of is use to code a VBA method that does the work and then invoque it in my VSTO code, but it's not very elegant is it... Thanks in advanced :-)

Create xml file based on xPath from Excel with VBA

I've found some items that seem to dance around what I'm looking to do. I'm not a full-fledged programmer, but have been creating my own macros in Excel. I'm trying to create one now that will help me create the structure of an XML file. I want to go down the list of XPaths, and for each one create any parents in the path as needed as well as the child and its value. I'll be adding another aspect to filter it to the fields I want, but the part I'm struggling with is the logic to check if each parent node exists, create it if needed, then add the child and its value. Bonus would be if the output file were formatted with each node on a new line, and more so if it child nodes were indented from parent, but just creating it is my primary concern. Any help would be much appreciated, this has to potential to save me a lot of time.

How to turn off Excel "Header Row" without losing data in it?

I've been sent an Excel spreadsheet with a weird first row. Some of the cells say "Column1", "Column2", etc., but I can't delete their contents. If I select the cell and hit backspace, it goes blank, but when I press return, it goes right back to saying "Column1". I found another answer here that suggested this could be caused by "Cell validation", but the validation window says "Any value", and also "show alert" (and I'm not seeing an alert), so I don't think that's it. The first row is white text on a blue background, if that means anything. The spreadsheet was sent to me in XLSX format, but I tried resaving as XLS and opening that, and it seems to make no difference. This is with the "ribbon" version of Excel (they got rid of the Help menu so I don't know how to see what version number it is!). Thanks! Update: The Excel online help says to use ribbon Home tab - Cells - Delete - ... to delete cells. When I select anything on the first row, this pop-up menu is dimmed. So maybe Excel doesn't think row 1 consists of "cells"? Though I don't know what else it would call them. Update 2: I found it, kind of. If I click the "Design" tab in the ribbon, then uncheck "Header Row", then first row becomes a normal row of cells again. Unfortunately, the contents disappear entirely. I want to delete a few cells, not all 50+! And if I copy the first row before turning off "Header Row", it disappears from the clipboard when I uncheck that. So I kind of know what mode it's stuck in, but not a good way out of it.

Policies and procedures should be documented because they help to reduce the range of individual decisions and encourage management by exception: the manager only needs to give special attention to unusual problems, not covered by a specific policy or procedure. As more and more procedures are written to cover recurring situations, managers will begin to make decisions which will be consistent from one functional area to the next.Companies should take a project management approach when implementing an environment for a sustainable documentation program and do the following:1. Identify an Executive Champion2. Put together a winning team3. Assign ownership4. Centralize publishing5. Establish the Document Maintenance Process Up Front6. Document critical activities only7. Document actual practice8. Minimize documentation9. Support continuous improvement10. Keep it simple 1. Identify an Executive ChampionAppoint a top down driver. Select one key individual to be a mentor for the procedure planning team. The individual should be a senior manager, such as your company president, CIO, CFO, the vice-president of quality, manufacturing, or engineering. Written policies and procedures can be important supportive aids when known to express the thinking for the chief executive officer and / or the president and to have his or her full support. 2. Put Together a Winning TeamChoose a strong Project Management Leader and staff the procedure planning team with management members from cross functional groups. Make sure team members have the responsibility - and the authority - to make things happen.The winning team should consist of the Documentation Project Manager, Document Owners (one for each functional area), a Document Controller, and Document Specialists (as needed). Assign Ownership It is virtually impossible to keep process documentation simple and meaningful if employees who are far removed from the activity itself create it. Each document has a single owner, who is responsible for ensuring that the document is necessary and that it reflects actual practice. Activities that represent little risk (such as project status), activities that cannot be defined in terms of specific tasks (such as product research), and activities that can be performed in a variety of ways (such as advertising) often do not require documentation. Sometimes, an activity will evolve to the point where documentation is necessary. For example, an activity performed by single employee may be straightforward and uncomplicated -- that is, until the activity is performed by multiple employees. Sometimes, it is the interaction between co-workers that necessitates documentation; sometimes, it is the complexity or the diversity of the activity.7. Document Actual Practices The only reason to maintain process documentation is to enhance the performance of the employee performing the activity. And documentation can only enhance performance if it reflects reality -- that is, current best practice. Documentation that reflects an unattainable ideal or outdated practices will end up on the shelf, unused and forgotten.Documenting actual practice means (1) auditing the activity to understand how the work is really performed, (2) identifying best practices with employees who are involved in the activity, (3) building consensus so that everyone agrees on a common method, and (4) recording that consensus.8. Minimize Documentation One way to keep it simple is to document at the highest level possible. That is, include in your documents only as much detail as is absolutely necessary.When writing a document, you should ask yourself, What is the purpose of this document? That is, what problem will it solve?By focusing on this question, you can target the critical information.• What questions are the end users likely to have?• What level of detail is required?• Is any of this information extraneous to the document's purpose? Short, concise documents are user friendly and they are easier to keep up to date. 9. Support Continuous Improvement Employees who perform an activity are often in the best position to identify improvements to the process. In other words, continuous improvement is a natural byproduct of the work itself -- but only if the improvements are communicated to all employees who are involved in the process, and only if there is consensus among those employees.Traditionally, process documentation has been used to dictate performance, to limit employees' actions. In the Tutor environment, process documents are used to communicate improvements identified by employees. How does this work? The Tutor methodology requires a process document to reflect actual practice, so the owner of a document must routinely audit its content -- does the document match what the employees are doing? If it doesn't, the owner has the responsibility to evaluate the process, to build consensus among the employees, to identify "best practices," and to communicate these improvements via a document update. Continuous improvement can also be an outgrowth of corrective action -- but only if the solutions to problems are communicated effectively. The goal should be to solve a problem once and only once, which means not only identifying the solution, but ensuring that the solution becomes part of the process. The Tutor system provides the method through which improvements and solutions are documented and communicated to all affected employees in a cost-effective, timely manner; it ensures that improvements are not lost or confined to a single employee. 10. Keep it Simple Process documents don't have to be complex and unfriendly. In fact, the simpler the format and organization, the more likely the documents will be used. And the simpler the method of maintenance, the more likely the documents will be kept up-to-date. Keep it simply by:• Minimizing skills and training required• Following the established Tutor document format and layout• Avoiding technology just for technology's sake No other rule has as major an impact on the success of your internal documentation as -- keep it simple. Login as SYS user to Oracle 11g from .NET

Using the Oracle Data Provider for .NET, my application connects to the database using the privileged SYS user. The connection string is as follows: Data Source=MyTnsName;User ID=sys;Password=MySysPassword;DBA Privilege=SYSDBA This works fine with Oracle 10, but Oracle 11 keeps complaining about an invalid username or password. I verified that the password is correct - other apps work fine with the same credentials. Note that for regular users (without the DBA Privilege part), connecting to Oracle 11 works perfectly. So, what's wrong? Update: This is not an issue with case sensitivity - when constructing the connection string, the password case is not altered by my code, and the password works fine with other, non-.NET-applications. I suspect that this might be caused by the Oracle 10 client I'm using to connect to the 11 database. Oracle states that the client is upward-compatible, the only drawback being that you cannot use some new features of the database. However, SYSDBA connections clearly are not a new Oracle 11 feature, and - again - a non-.NET-app (Keeptool Hora) can connect using the same setup. Any other ideas? Update 2: The problem persists when using an Oracle 11 client :-(

32-bit oracle 10g client to 64-bit oracle 10g server

Due to a 3rd party application's requirement, I may be forced to use 32-bit client of Oracle 10gR2 on the application server to connect to a 64-bit DB server oracle 10gR2 (10.2.0.4.0 - 64bit;another box). The OS is SUSE Linux ver 10. Platform is x86. There are no problems connecting to 64-bit DB server via 32-bit client. I have tested this. Does this result in performance degradation? Does Oracle or anyone else has any recommendations about this kind of scenario? Searched the net without much gain. Please help. Thanks.

how to better use of eclipse code templates (PHP)?

One particular problem I was having was using ${word_selection} in an Eclipse PDT template. I was recently trying to use some code templates with Eclipse PDT 2.1 to speed up some common tasks. We use a lot of getters/setters, so I wrote the following template. function get${word_selection}() { return $$this->getData('${word_selection}'); } function set${word_selection}($$${word_selection}) { $$this->setData('${word_selection}', $$${word_selection}); } I named the template "getset" and the only way I know to use the Code Assist is to type: "getset" then hit my code assist keys (I have it set to Esc, but I think the default was Ctrl+Space). The problem is, this doesn't actually let me select a word to be used by the ${word_selection}. how do I type in my template name, hit the key combo, and have a word selected all at the same time? I also want to know what kinds of templates people have set up and any other tips for using templates to speed of programming.
