• Does Socket open another thread? Does it return something?

  In the client application I call new Socket(serverIP,serverPort). As a result the client application sends a request to the server application to open a socket. Does it start a new thread? I mean which of the following is true? Client application sends a request and immediately starts to execute following commands (not weighting for the answer). Client sends the request and weights for the answer. As soon as the answer is obtained, the client application continues to execute following commands. The second case seems to be more realistic and logical for me. However, I do not understand what happens if the server does not open a socket and it does not say that it does not "want" to open the second (it can happen if the server does not exist or network is broken). What will happen in this case? Will server weight forever? In general it would be nice for the client to know what is the result of its request for the socket. For example I can imagine the following situations: The socket is opened by the server. The server refuses to open a socket. So, server exists, it got the request from the client but it says "no". There is no response from the server. I know that new Socket(serverIP,serverPort) does not "return" this kind of information. But it throws exceptions. One of them is "UnkownHostException". When it is thrown? When the server is not responding for a while (for how long)? ADDED: I just found out that UnknownHostException is thrown to indicate that the IP address of a host could not be determined. So, it is unrelated with the above described situations (server is not responding, server refuses to open a socket).

• How can I find the common ancestor of two nodes in a binary tree?

  The Binary Tree here is not a Binary Search Tree. Its just a Binary Tree. The structure could be taken as - struct node { int data; struct node *left; struct node *right; }; The maximum solution I could work out with a friend was something of this sort - Consider this binary tree (from http://lcm.csa.iisc.ernet.in/dsa/node87.html) : The inorder traversal yields - 8, 4, 9, 2, 5, 1, 6, 3, 7 And the postorder traversal yields - 8, 9, 4, 5, 2, 6, 7, 3, 1 So for instance, if we want to find the common ancestor of nodes 8 and 5, then we make a list of all the nodes which are between 8 and 5 in the inorder tree traversal, which in this case happens to be [4, 9, 2]. Then we check which node in this list appears last in the postorder traversal, which is 2. Hence the common ancestor for 8 and 5 is 2. The complexity for this algorithm, I believe is O(n) (O(n) for inorder/postorder traversals, the rest of the steps again being O(n) since they are nothing more than simple iterations in arrays). But there is a strong chance that this is wrong. :-) But this is a very crude approach, and I'm not sure if it breaks down for some case. Is there any other (possibly more optimal) solution to this problem?

  I have a series of HTML table cells with data - an example of which is: <tr id="rrow1"> <td> <a href="/electricity" class="category">Electricity</a> </td> <td> 901.471 </td> </tr> <tr id="rrow2">... <tr id="rrow3">... etc In this case, each <tr> (or hypathetically for the wider community a div/span/tr/td) is assigned a sequential id based on $rrow++; in a while loop (in PHP). I also have a Piechart using the highcharts library, where i'd like to highlight the slice (sliced: true) based upon onmouseover of particular div/span/tr/td element - in this case #rrow1 as above, but multiple/iterative elements as required and (sliced: false) onmouseout... As a simple example, I've tried accessing various derivatives of the following, but failed: $('#rrow1').mouseover(function() { chart.series[0].graph.attr('sliced', true); }); $('#rrow1').mouseout(function() { chart.series[0].graph.attr('sliced', false); }); The nearest I've found is this but bastardised at most and without success: plotOptions: { series: { mouseOver: function() { if( $('#rrow1').mouseover ) series.x = sliced: true; }, mouseOut: function() { if( $('#rrow1').mouseout ) series.x = sliced: false; } } } These are far from approaching correct and despite searching I can't find a valid/helpful example to work from or draw direction. • kQuery : Trying to find a specific instance of a class by number

  I guess I have just hit a mental block with this one; maybe some fresh eyes will help. Basically I have a few instance of the class "menu-item" which when clicked call the click function via jQuery and bring up a video. Instead of giving each on an id as well as a class I am trying to find which instance of the class was clicked (1, 2, 3, etc). • In Java, is there a performance gain in using interfaces for complex models?

  The title is hardly understandable, but I'm not sure how to summarize that another way. Any edit to clarify is welcome. I have been told, and recommended to use interfaces to improve performances, even in a case which doesn't especially call for the regular "interface" role. In this case, the objects are big models (in a MVC meaning), with many methods and fields. The "good use" that has been recommended to me is to create an interface, with its unique implementation. There won't be any other class implementing this interface, for sure. I have been told that this is better to do so, because it "exposes less" (or something close) to the other classes which will use methods from this class, as these objects are referring to the object from its interface (all public methods from the implementation being reproduced in the interface). This seems quite strange to me, as it seems like a C++ use to me (with header files). There I see the point, but in Java? Is there really a point in making an interface for such unique implementation? I would really appreciate some clarifications on the topic, so I could justify not following such kind of behavior, and the hassle it creates from duplicating all declarations. Edit: Plenty of valid points in most answers, I'm wondering if I won't switch this question for a community wiki, so we can regroup these points in more structured answers.

  I have some code that works on the color structure like this public void ChangeColor() { thisColor.R = thisColor.R + 5; } Now I need to make a method that changes a different variable depending on what it is passed. Here is what the code looks like now. public void ChangeColor(int RGBValue) { switch(RGBValue) { case 1: thisColor.R = thisColor.R + 5; break; case 2: thiscolor.B = thisColor.B + 5; break; } } Now, this is something I would normally never question, I'd just throw a #region statement around it and call it a day, but this is just an example of what I have, the actual function is quite long. I want it to look like this: public void ChangeColor(int RGBValue) { thiscolor.RGBValue = thiscolor.RGBValue; } So essentially the value would refer to the variable being used. Is there a name for this? Is this what Reflection is for? Or something like that... Is there a way to do this?

  I am new to VB in Excel. I have a unique requirement for capacity allocation which I want to automate using excel VB and facing hard time doing so, hope you can help. The objective is to maximize profit by allocating maximum capacity to those products which have highest profit potential first. Every Month I get demand along with backlogs of previous month. I need to allocate capacity to backlogs of previous month first and then only the remaining capacity for fresh demand. There are two primary constraints: 1.The number of working days in a month (variable) 2. Not all products can be made on every production line and out of same product may be different for each production line Also there will be losses whenever there is a change over from one SKU to another depending upon the Variant Type and size of next product. If there is variant change then 8 hours of production loss needs to be accounted and 4 hours in case of size change(8 hours in case of both). • Setting Image.Source doesn't update when loading from a resource.

  I've got this definition in my XAML: <Image Name="AlbumArt" Source="/AlbumChooser2;component/Resources/help.png" /> The image is display OK on startup. In my code I'm looking for mp3's to play and I display the associated album art in this Image. Now if there's no associated image I want to display a "no image" image. So I've got one defined and I load it using: BitmapImage noImage = new BitmapImage( new Uri("/AlbumChooser2;component/Resources/no_image.png", UriKind.Relative)); I've got a helper class that finds the image if there is one (returning it as a BitmapImage), or returns null if there isn't one: if (findImage.Image != null) { this.AlbumArt.Source = findImage.Image; // This works } else { this.AlbumArt.Source = noImage; // This doesn't work } In the case where an image is found the source is updated and the album art gets displayed. In the case where an image isn't found I don't get anything displayed - just a blank. I don't think that it's the setting of AlbumArt.Source that's wrong, but the loading of the BitmapImage. If I use a different image it works, but if I recreate the image it doesn't work. What could be wrong with the image?

• What is the best way to wait for a GPS location fix?

  Hi, Using my Android application, when a user does a certain action, a background service is started that fetches the current GPS location and saves it in a database in addition of doing some other stuff. In that service, I use the requestLocationUpdates() from the LocationManager class and wait until the onLocationChanged() of my LocationListener (which is implemented by the service) is fired. But what is the best way to wait for the onLocationChanged to fire? Should I simply poll on a variable and wait until it is set? Any tips? Note: I cannot simply write to the database in the onLocationChanged() because of some other stuff. EDIT: To clearfy my situation, I can present an example similar to my case: Let's say user pushes a button and a method myMethod is fired which will return some object. Then, in this myMethod I will register for location updates from the GPS (using requestLocationChanged) and in addition wait for the users location and use it for something. In other words, myMethod cannot return before the location is present. I don't know how I can use onLocationChanged in this case.

  I've notice that when one of the two conditions in a php if statement is not true. You get an undefined index notice for the statement that is not true. And the result in my case is a distorted web page.   I have the below tables. tblInput Id WordPosition Words -- ----------- ----- 1 1 Hi 1 2 How 1 3 are 1 4 you 2 1 Ok 2 2 This 2 3 is 2 4 me tblReplacement Id ReplacementWords --- ---------------- 1 Hi 2 are 3 Ok 4 This The tblInput holds the list of words while the tblReplacement hold the words that we need to search in the tblInput and if a match is found then we need to replace those. But the problem is that, we need to replace those words if any match is found at the beginning. i.e. in the tblInput, in case of ID 1, the words that will be replaced is only 'Hi' and not 'are' since before 'are', 'How' is there and it is not in the tblReplacement list. in case of Id 2, the words that will be replaced are 'Ok' & 'This'. Since these both words are present in the tblReplacement table and after the first word i.e. 'Ok' is replaced, the second word which is 'This' here comes first in the list of ID category 2 . Since it is available in the tblReplacement, and is the first word now, so this will also be replaced. So the desired output will be Id NewWordsAfterReplacement --- ------------------------ 1 How 1 are 1 you 2 is 2 me My approach so far: ;With Cte1 As( Select t1.Id ,t1.Words ,t2.ReplacementWords From tblInput t1 Cross Join tblReplacement t2) ,Cte2 As( Select Id, NewWordsAfterReplacement = REPLACE(Words,ReplacementWords,'') From Cte1) Select * from Cte2 where NewWordsAfterReplacement <> '' But I am not getting the desired output. I could build a class that acts as a wrapper for the whole thing and bind the different table values to class properties but that doesn't seem quite right since I would have to do this for every single thing that requires "the merge". Something pretty important (and probably basic) is missing the the thought process but after spending a weekend on google and in books I give up and turn to the SO community.

  Hi all, Being a newbie in javascript I came to a situation where I need more information on escaping characters in a string. Basically I know that in order to escape " I need to replace it with \" but what I don't know is for which characters I need to escape a particular string for. Is there a list of these "characters to escape"? or is it any character that is not a-zA-Z0-9 ? In my situation, I don't have control over the content that is being displayed on my page. Users enter some text and save it. I then use a webservice to extract them from the database, build a json array of objects, then iterate the array when I need to display them. In this case, I have - naturally - no idea of what the text the user has entered and therefore for what characters I need to escape. I also use jQuery for this specific project (just in case it has a function I am not aware of, to do what I need) Providing examples would be appreciated but I also want to learn the theory and logic behind it. Hope someone can be of any help.

• Word Automation : Replace do not work after TypeText

  I need to generate doc (real doc, not docx) files, the "best" way i have found is to use word automation (Word 2010). I have files that I open, and then replace values inside before saving it on a new name. (Ex : I replace "" with "155023"). To do this, I use the Application.Selection.Find. I just had a problem when the new value had more than 255 characters (Thanks Microsofts limitations ...). To avoid this problem, i use TypeText in this case. My problem now is once I use TypeText, the Replace do not work anymore .. And I can't find why. Any idea will be greatly appreciated. • How to model and handle presentation DTO's to abstract from complicated domain model?

  Hi I am developing an application that needs to work with a complex domain model using Hibernate. This application uses Spring MVC and using the domain objects in the presentation layer is very messy so I think I should use DTO's that go to and from my service layer so that these match what I need in my views. Now lets assume I have a CarLease entity whose properties are not simple java primitives but it's composed with other entities like Make, Model, etc public class CarLease { private Make make; Private Model model; . . . } most properties are in this fashion and they are selectable using drop down selects on the jsp view, each will post back an ID to the controller. Now considering some standard use cases: create, edit, display How would you go about modeling the presentation DTO's to be used as form backing objects and communication between presentation and service layers?? Would you create a different DTO for each case (create, edit, display), would you make DTO's for the complex attributes? if so where would you translate the ID to entity? how and where would you handle validation, DTO/Domain assembly, what would you return from service layer methods? (create, edit, get) As you can see, I now I will benefit by separating my view from the domain objects (very complex with lots of stuff I don't need.) but I am having a hard time finding any real world examples and best practices for this. I need some architecture guidance from top to bottom, please keep in mind I will use Spring MVC in case that may leverage on your anwser. thanks in advance.

  I have 2 classes, one that implements a double lookup( int i); and one where I use that lookup(int i) in solving a question, or in this case printing the lookup values. This case is for an array. So I read the exception documentation or google/textbook and come with the following code: public double lookup(int i) throws Exception { if( i > numItems) throw new Exception("out of bounds"); return items[i]; } and take it over to my class and try to print my set, where set is a name of the object type I define in the class above. public void print() { for (int i = 0; i < set.size() - 1; i++) { System.out.print(set.lookup(i) + ","); } System.out.print(set.lookup(set.size())); } I'm using two print()'s to avoid the last "," in the print, but am getting an unhandled exception Exception (my exception's name was Exception) I think I have to catch my exception in my print() but cannot find the correct formatting online. Do I have to write catch exception Exception? because that gives me a syntax error saying invalid type on catch. Sources like http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/exceptions/ are of little help to me, I'm can't seem to grasp what the text is telling me. I'm also having trouble finding sources with multiple examples where I can actually understand the coding in the examples. so could anybody give me a source/example for the above catch phrase and perhaps a decent source of examples for new Java programmers? my book is horrendous and I cannot seem to find an understandable example for the above catch phrase online.

• Exemplars of large document-centric applications with COM/XPCOM/.NET interfaces.

  I am looking for exemplars (design examples) showing the use of interfaces (aka 'protocols' for you smalltalkers) to design a document management architecture in a large Word Processor, Spreadsheet, vector graphic or publishing package, or office-productivity (non-database) application with support for as many of the following as possible: any open source project, will be ideal, and language of implementation is unimportant since I am looking for design examples, however an object oriented language with support for "interfaces" is a must. I know at least a dozen languages, and I'm willing to study any application's source. use of "interface" could loosely be applied to either XPCOM or COM interfaces, or .NET interfaces, or even the use of pure-virtual (virtual+abstract) base-classes for OOP languages that lack the ability to declare an interface distinct from a class. I am mostly looking for a robust, thorough and flexible implementation for a document, IDocument, various document views (IDocumentView), and whatever operations make sense in that case. I am particular interested in cases where the product in question is a real-world product. For example, if anybody familiar with OpenOffice can tell me if the code contains a good sample design. I am looking for design documentation that outlines the design of the interfaces for such an application. So for example, if the openoffice spreadsheet has such an interface design, then that might be the best case, because it is a widely used real-world design, with millions of users, rather than a textbook example, which is minimal, and contrived. I know that the Mozilla platform uses XPCOM, and its design is heavily "interface" oriented, but I am looking more for a "word processor" or "spreadsheet" type of document design, rather than a web-browser. I am particularly interested in the interfaces used to access to data and meta-data such as markup (attributes like bold, and italics, and font size), and the ability to search and look up named entities within a document.

• Asp.net MVC - Model binding image button

  I've got a very complex form and i'm using the MVC model binding to capture all the information I've got it set up to capture all the different submissions that can happen as there are about 10 different submit buttons on the form, and there are also 2 image buttons I tried to get a bit clever (or so i thought) with capturing the image button submissions, and have created a child class so that i can capture the x value that's returned public class ImageButtonViewData { public int x { get; set; } public string Value { get; set; } } The parent class looks something like this public class ViewDataObject { public ImageButtonViewData ImageButton { get; set; } public ViewDataObject(){ this.ImageButton = new ImageButton(); } } The html for the image button then looks like <input type="image" id="ViewDataObject_ImageButton" name="ViewDataObject.ImageButton" /> This works fine in all browsers except for Chrome. When i debug it in chrome, the Request.Form object contains the values that i would expect, but after the model binding has occurred, the ImageButton property on the ViewDataObject has been set to null The only difference that i can see between the submission values is that Chrome passes the x as lower case (ViewDataObject.ImageButton.x) and IE passes it as upper case (ViewDataObject.ImageButton.X) but i didn't think that model binding took any notice of casing on property names Does anyone have any ideas ?

• Subversion unable to merge changes when using Dreamweaver

  I've got a project running and we're using SVN as the version control. There are 3 devs on it. Dev1 = OSX + Textmate Dev2 = Windows 7 + Dreamweaver (plus tortoise svn) Dev3 = OSX + Coda Case 1 (expected): Dev1 and dev3 work on a file called signup.php. They work on different parts of the file. Dev1 commits it and dev3 updates their copy. signup.php is merged as expected. All good. Case 2 (not expected): Dev1 and dev2 work on a file called signup.php. They work on different parts of the file. Dev1 commits it and dev2 updates their copy. signup.php is always in conflict even though different parts of the file are worked on. This is not the expected behaviour experienced by dev1 and dev3. This works boths ways and each time dev1 updates dev2's changes he gets conflicts too. But never with dev3. Could this be down the way Dreamweaver is saving files ? Perhaps character encoding. We are all working in UTF8. These constant and unnecessary conflicts are becoming a massive distraction. Help !

• Stopping a MATLAB GUI callback

  Dear All, I have a START and STOP button. When I hit START, i run a bunch of code in my callback. It's basically a sequential "script" that opens valves, dispenses water and then closes the valves...there is no while() loop and it doesn't repeat. I want to be able to stop this process at any time using the STOP button. Most of the related answers I've seen are in the cases where a while() loop is used. Some people have also suggested to periodically check if the STOP button was pressed (using a variable or handle variable). Since I do not have a while loop, I can't solve it that way. Also, I'd like to be able to exit immediately, without having to periodically check (because checking multiple times in my code would be ugly and confusing). Is there a way to terminate the callback which was interrupted by the STOP button? If not, is it possible to have the START button run a .m file and then have the STOP button terminate that .m file? The worst case scenario would be to check a variable periodically.
