• Java2Days 2012 Trip Report

  Java2Days 2012 was held in beautiful Sofia, Bulgaria on October 25-26. For those of you not familiar with it, this is the third installment of the premier Java conference for the Balkan region. It is an excellent effort by admirable husband and wife team Emo Abadjiev and Iva Abadjieva as well as the rest of the Java2Days team including Yoana Ivanova and Nadia Kostova. Thanks to their hard work, the conference continues to grow vigorously with almost a thousand enthusiastic, bright young people attending this year and no less than three tracks on Java, the Cloud and Mobile. The conference is a true gem in this region of the world and I am very proud to have been a part of it again, along with the other world class speakers the event rightfully attracts. It was my honor to present the first talk of the conference. It was a full-house session on Java EE 7 and 8 titled "JavaEE.Next(): Java EE 7, 8, and Beyond". The talk was primarily along the same lines as Arun Gupta's JavaOne 2012 technical keynote. I covered the changes in JMS 2, the Java API for WebSocket (JSR 356), the Java API for JSON Processing (JSON-P), JAX-RS 2, JCache, JPA 2.1, JTA 1.2, JSF 2.2, Java Batch, Bean Validation 1.1 and the rest of the APIs in Java EE 7. I also briefly talked about the possible contents of Java EE 8. My stretch goal was to gather some feedback on some open issues in the Java EE EG (more on that soon) but I ran out of time in the short format forty-five minute session. The talk was received well and I had some pretty good discussions afterwards. The slides for the talk are here: JavaEE.Next(): Java EE 7, 8, and Beyond from reza_rahman To my delight, the Java2Days folks were very interested in my domain-driven design/Java EE 6 talk (titled "Domain Driven Design with Java EE 6"). I've had this talk in my inventory for a long time now but it always gets overridden by less theoretical talks on APIs, tools, etc. The talk has three parts -- a brief overview of DDD theory, mapping DDD to Java EE and actual running DDD code in Java EE 6/GlassFish. For the demo, I converted the well-known DDD sample application (http://dddsample.sourceforge.net/) written mostly in Spring 2 and Hibernate 2 to Java EE 6. My eventual plan is to make the code available via a top level java.net project. Even despite the broad topic and time constraints, the talk went very well. It was a full house, the Q & A was excellent and one of the other speakers even told me they thought this was the best talk of the conference! The talk covers the basic of WebSocket, the JSR 356 API and a simple demo using Tyrus/GlassFish. The talk went very well and there were some very good questions afterwards. JSR 356, Java API for WebSocket, was approved by the SE/EE EC to continue development in the JCP program. Hi! My name is Tarun Arora, I am a Microsoft MVP in Visual Studio ALM & a Visual Studio ALM Ranger, as a consultant I have had to demo TFS Preview to potential customers several times a day. I usually create the team project during the demo to show off how quick and efficient it is, but setting up teams, team members, tasks usually takes longer I don’t prefer carrying out these steps during the demo. I have developed a .net based console application which uses the TFS API to create a standard demo environment saving me from all these manual steps. The console application reads the set up information from an XML file, leaving the setup process highly customizable. • What's the best practice for async APIs that return futures on Scala?

  I have started a project to write an async PostgreSQL driver on Scala and to be async, I need to accept callbacks and use futures, but then accepting a callback and a future makes the code cumbersome because you always have to send a callback even if it is useless. Here's a test: "insert a row in the database" in { withHandler { (handler, future) => future.get(5, TimeUnit.SECONDS) handler.sendQuery( this.create ){ query => }.get( 5, TimeUnit.SECONDS ) handler.sendQuery( this.insert ){ query => }.get( 5, TimeUnit.SECONDS ).rowsAffected === 1 } } Sending the empty callback is horrible but I couldn't find a way to make it optional or anything like that, so right now I don't have a lot of ideas on how this external API should look like. It could be something like: handler.sendQuery( this.create ).addListener { query => println(query) } But then again, I'm not sure how people are organizing API's in this regard. Providing examples in other projects would also be great.

• Integrating eBay and PayPal inventory

  Say I have an item for sale on eBay, and the same item for sale on another site via PayPal. Is it possible to have sales on one site reflected in the inventory for the other site, and vice-versa? In other words, if I have ten items for sale, and I buy one on either site, it should show that there are nine items left on both sites. I know that PayPal has an API for setting the inventory level of an item associated with a button. eBay also has an API for controlling an item's inventory. I'm wondering if anyone has tried to integrate them.

• Displaying google analytics data on my website

  I sale adspace for my websites directly to the advertisers. I ad page where I want to show google anaylytics information that update automatically without me having to manually update everyday or every month. Something like this: http://wstats.net/en/website/riverplate.com#stat_trafic I don't want to use embedded or iframed third party services. I know google has public API and you can connect it to google graph API to to show pretty graphs. There is a tutorial by google here on how to do it: https://developers.google.com/analytics/resources/articles/gdataAnalyticsCharts Few problems: I don't know much javascript The javascript seems to prompt for authntication as opposed to login automatically. (from my understanding by reading comments on the code) Does anyone know of any ready made script that does what I am looking for or know how I can fix this code that will allow me to display analytic info without authenticating? Thanks.

  I'm a PHP developer on Linux, and my manager wants a business intelligence dashboard. He wants to see in real-time our profit/loss stuff in fancy charts, based on our software sales. I could code it all from scratch and use Google Charts API or some other charts API to help me. However, I wanted to know if there was a free, open source, PHP-based business intelligence package out there, or some sort of widget framework that I could start with. That way, I can build the BI widgets inside that framework and not have to do everything from scratch. I apologize ahead of time if this is the wrong stackexchange where to place this query.   This SO question is now more than two years old. MySQL is an incredibly popular database engine, Python is an incredibly popular programming language, and Python 3 has been officially released two years ago, and was available even before that. What's more, the whole mysqldb module is just a layer translating Python's db-api to MySQL's API. It's not that big of a library. I must be missing something here. How come almost* nobody in the entire open source community has spent the (I'm guessing) two weeks it takes to port this lib? Is Python 3 that unpopular? Is the combination of python and mysql not as common as I assume? Or maybe it's just a lot harder to port mysqldb than I assume? • What is the advantage of a programmers VM apart from portability

  I can understand the benefits of Java running on a JVM. Portability. Nice simple reason. But I have always been puzzled as to why Microsoft brought out their own version of a JVM - .NET. C# is supposed to be a fine language (haven't used myself) but could Microsoft have launched product to use native. ie to generate an exe? My colleague is learning F#. The reason it has to be a language which runs on .NET is because the Microsoft Lync API which will be used is only available on .NET. ie there is no C API for Lync. A cynical view may be that the reason is vendor lockin. F# will only run on a Microsoft platform (or C# for that matter) and so program is locked in. But maybe I am missing some other benefit of a VM platform?

• Choppy video in vlc even with hardware acceleration on ATI Radeon HD

  After installing Catalyst 11.12 and studying instructions (1, 2) to enable hardware acceleration I ended up with the following command: sudo apt-get install xvba-va-driver libva-glx1 vainfo && \ vainfo && \ vlc --verbose 2 --ffmpeg-hw video.1080p.x264.mkv The output confirms that it's using the VA API: avcodec decoder: Using VA API version 0.32 for hardware decoding. But even after a reboot the video still looks choppy. There's no vlc output to indicate that the codec is having trouble, or that it's skipping frames. Any idea what could be the problem? Using vlc 1.1.12 with default settings. Also tried (in sequence): sudo apt-get install libva-glx1 sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64 xserver-xorg-core Rebooting No luck yet. • Is there a way to check if redistributed code has been altered?

  I would like to redistribute my app (PHP) in a way that the user gets the front end (presentation) layer which is using the API on my server through a web service. I want the user to be able to alter his part of the app but at the same time exclude such altered app from the normal support and offer support on pay by the hour basis. Is there a way to check if the source code was altered? Only solution I can think of would be to get check sums of all the files then send it through my API and compare them with the original app. Is there any more secure way to do it so it would be harder for the user to break such protection?

• Creating SparseImages for Pivot

  Learning how to programmatically make collections for Microsoft Live Labs Pivot has been a pretty interesting ride. There are very few examples out there, and the folks at MS Live Labs are often slow on any feedback.  But that is what Reflector is for, right? Well, I was creating these InfoCard images (similar to the Car images in the "New Cars" sample collection that that MS created for Pivot), and wanted to put a Tag Cloud into the info card.  The problem was the size of the tag cloud might vary in order for all the tags to fit into the tag cloud (often times being bigger than the info card itself).  This was because the varying word lengths and calculated font sizes. So, to fix this, I made the tag cloud its own separate image from the info card.  Then, I would create a sparse image out of the two images, where the tag cloud fit into a small section of the info card.  This would allow the user to see the info card, but then zoom into the tag cloud and see all the tags at a normal resolution.  Kind'a cool. But...I couldn't find one code example (not one!) of how to create a sparse image.  There is one page on the SeaDragon site (http://www.seadragon.com/developer/creating-content/deep-zoom-tools/) that gives over the API for creating images and collections, and it sparsely goes over how to create a sparse image, but unless you are familiar with the API already, the documentation doesn't help very much. The key is the Image.ViewportWidth and Image.ViewportOrigin properties of the image that is getting super imposed on the main image.  I'll walk through the code below.  I've setup a couple Point structs to represent the parent and sub image sizes, as well as where on the parent I want to position the sub image.  Next, create the parent image.  This is pretty straight forward.  Then I create the sub image.  Then I calculate several ratios; the height to width ratio of the sub image, the width ratio of the sub image to the parent image, the height ratio of the sub image to the parent image, then the X and Y coordinates on the parent image where I want the sub image to be placed represented as a ratio of the position to the parent image size. After all these ratios have been calculated, I use them to calculate the Image.ViewportWidth and Image.ViewportOrigin values, then pass the image objects into the SparseImageCreator and call Create. • Good architecture for user information on separate databases?

  I need to write an API to connect to an existing SQL database. The API will be written in ASP.Net MVC3. The slight problem is that with existing users of the system, they may have a username on multiple databases. Each company using the product gets a brand new instance of the database, but over the years (the system has been running for 10 years) there are quite a few users (hundreds) who have multiple usernames across multiple "companies" (things got fragmented obviously and sometimes a single Company has 5 "projects" that each have their own database). Long story short, I need to be able to have a single unified user login that will allow existing users to access their information across all their projects. The only thing I can think is storing a bunch of connection strings, but that feels like a really bad idea. I'll have a new Database that will hold the "unified user" information...can anyone suggest a solid system architecture that can handle a setup like this?
