• Old CRT screen's high resolution doesn't work anymore on windows 7

  One year ago I decided to switch from Windows XP to Windows 7. I had a 17" CRT monitor with a screen resolution of 1600x1200 which worked fine on Windows XP. While installing Windows 7 everything went well until Windows 7 was going to install the video card its driver. Windows 7 puts the screen to its recommended resolution and my screen became black. I waited a few minutes to be sure the installation was finished. I turned off the computer by hand and restarted the computer on a resolution of 800x640. When windows 7 was done installing I went to screen resolutions and the resolution of 1600x1200 was on the top of the list with '(recommended)' next to it. I tried putting it on 1600x1200 but again my screen went black. I installed all windows 7 updates including the video card driver from the NVidia site (NOT from Windows 7). I tried about everything to make it work on 1600x1200 but with no succes. The highest resolution I got with the crt monitor was 1280x1024. I had a TFT screen which had 1280x1024 as max resolution and had better colors, so I used that one till today. My video card is 9600GT and my power supply is beyond sufficient. I even tried to install the driver I had on XP to see if it worked, but no results. I tried classic mode on windows 7, changed the dpi, the frequentie and the monitor settings, but nothing worked. I really like a vertical resolution of 1200, but it seems today I'm bound to all those standard monitors with a resolution of 1980x1024... Can anybody explain to me what the cause is that it worked on Windows XP but not on Windows 7? And maybe a solution to the problem (I actually gave up on getting it fixed...) Thanks a lot in advance. SOLUTION I downloaded the according monitor driver and installed it. Next I rebooted my computer on low resolution (800x640) and connected the CRT monitor. When Windows 7 booted successfully I went to computer management and 'update the driver' of my monitor. I manually selected 'Generic PnP monitor' and made that one active. I want to advanced settings at 'Screen resolution' and selected the mode '1600x1200 (32-bit) 80 Hertz (95 Hertz did not work). Now I had my resolution on 1600x1200. I repeated the earlier step to select the original monitor again instead of the Generic monitor. Quite a way to solve this problem, but it worked! Thanks a lot you all.

• Setting up Virtual Hosts with Apache on Windows 2008 server for multiple sites. Complicated setup, including subversion

  I am setting up apache on my windows 2008 server at my home. It will serve 2 functions. Subversion hosting to allow me and some others to manage company documents with version control Local website hosting for web development. Will need to run several websites since I generally work on more then one site at a time. Heres what I have done so far. I set up subversion and apache 2.2 using some walk troughs. I changed the default port to 1337. (im a nerd) Using dyndns.com I created a domain to forward to my home ip which is dynamic. ( company.gotdns.org) I then went into my DNS for my company.com and added a record to point repo.company.com to company.gotdns.org At this point people who need access to my file repository can access by going to repo.company.com/repo which is good so far. My question comes on the next step, setting up virtual hosts with apache. Ideally I would like to have my local website be viewable by some others in the company from their homes. So, say I am working on site1, I would like to have them be able to view this by going site1.roeland.bythepixel.com. At the same time, I would like to have site10.wouter.bythepixel.com go to his local setup for site10. What I have done for this: I went into my DNS for company.com and added a record to point roeland.company.com to company.gotdns.org (which translates to my ip). I added code to my httpd-vhosts.conf (listed at bottom) I added code to my host file (listed at bottom) Hah, so of course this doenst work as excepted.. going to site1.roeland.bythepixel.com doesnt bring up my test1 site. Could anyone point me where I may be going wrong? • SQL Server 2005 high memory usage and performance problems

  Hi there guys. I have this ASP.NET/SQLServer2005 website running on a production server (Win2003, QuadCore, 4GB). The site runs smoothly normally, but after 2-3 weeks I notice a slow performance on the site (especifically in one particular page). Also I notice that the SQL Server process is using like 2GBs of RAM. So I restart the service, the site runs fast again and the process 300-400MBs. I'm looking for an explanation of why is this happening? What is SQL Server storing in RAM that takes too much space and degrades the performance? What can I do to avoid this? I'm trying to avoid restarting the SQLServer everytime this happens. Thank you!

  Hi Friends, When we use sp_send_dbmail to send email with attachment, the attachment gets copied into a folder inside C:\Windows\Temp. As we have many emails to be sent every day, the temp folder grows rapidly. This is the case with SQL Server 2005. We noticed that, with SQL Server 2008, we dont see these file under temp folder. Is there any setting to turn the above behavior off? Does SQL Server 2008 store the files in any other folder and not in temp? Appreciate your help and time. Thanks.

• SQL Server 2008 SQLCLR Issue

  I have a SQLCLR that was originally running on SQL Server 2005 DB. I have since rebuilt the CLR to run on SQL Server 2008. The CLR requires a reference to WindowsBase.dll. I added WindowsBase.dll as an assembly to the SQL Server 2008 DB. When I try to use the rebuilt CLR I get the message Could not load file or assembly 'WindowsBase, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. Assembly in host store has a different signature than assembly in GAC. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131050) I tried to drop and recreate the WindowsBase assembly (making sure to use the dll from the GAC) but I still get the above error. Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

  Hi all Our ASp.net applications getting error as below" [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied " But i can connect with Enterprise manager management studio and Query analaizer with out any issue. It was running these applications with out any issue long time. last one week we are getting this error.If we restart the server .it works then it will come again after 3to 4 hours.   Hello I have a web application, which is using a SQL Server 2005 database. My problem is, that the application has no role management. So the application always accesses the database with one default user. But now I have to save and access a value only for the current user. Is there any way to do this? Maybe something like a session on the web server? The best way would be, if there is any possibility to access the current session id of the web server from T-SQL. Do anyone understand my problem? :) Torben

  Are there any limitations with respect to developing ASP.NET and WPF apps using VS 2008/2010 and SQL Server 2008 on Windows 7 Home Premium? I know you can run IIS 7.5 on Home Premium. I Googled and Binged on Home Premium and VS/SQL Server and couldn't find much. It doesn't look like the features missing from Home Premium, domain joining, xp mode, etc... shouldn't prevent one from running and developing in VS/SQL Server. Update I did discover one limitation w/IIS 7.5 and it applies to all versions of Windows 7 I think. You can't create your own self signed SSL certificate specifying a name other than the machine name. You're stuck with your machine name which isn't that big a deal, but it is a change from previous versions.

  I have just installed VS C# Express 2008 which includes SQL Server Express 2008. It all went ok and I can see VS C# and SQL Server in the list of installed products. When I start VS C# it looks fine but in the DB Explorer / Data Conection context menu the option 'Create new SQL Server Database' is disabled. I have uninstalled all VS products and reinstalled but the problem remains. Do I need to do anything else? Can anyone help? Thanks

  Hi everyone, I have the most bizarre problem(at least it is bizarre to me) with MSSQL Server Express 2008. The problem is the following: On the development machine I use MS SQL Server 2008 Enterprise....I get some data from a WCF service and write that data to the db (simple as it can be)....I should point out however that the writing, it is done in a separate thread. BUt, anyway no problems during development...all the data is there. Then I set everything up(connection strings .\SQLEXPRESS, other settings) build in Release and copy that to a test machine that has MS SQL Server Express installed(because my application is a client application and it should work with Express)...I run the program....the program retrieves the data from the service...and when I look at the database...I'm in for a big suprise...there's only one row written(the first row received from the WCF service). I would really appreciate any help...I'm in a deadlock here. Thanks in advance. Bojan

  Hi, I used to remote access the SBS 2003 server through RDC and it has been working all the time but now I am unable to connect to the server. Whenever I pressed the "Connect" button on the Remote Desktop Connection dialog, a dialog with messages like "Connecting to: xx.xx.xx.xx" and "Configuring remote session..." appeared and then disappeared quickly, leaving the Remote Desktop Connection dialog there. How to fix the problem? Is the any way to reinstall the Remote Desktop on the server. Thank you.

• SQL Server Agent 2005 job runs but no output

  Essentially I have a job which runs in BIDS and as as a stand lone package and while it runs under the SQL Server Agent it doesn't complete properly (no error messages though). The job steps are: 1) Delete all rows from table; 2) Use For each loop to fill up table from Excel spreasheets; 3) Clean up table. I've tried this [MS page][1] (steps 1 & 2), didn't see any need to start changing from Server side security. Also SQLServerCentral.com for [this page][2], no resolution. How can I get error logging or a fix? Note I've reposted this from Server Fault as it's one of those questions that's not pure admin or programming. I have logged in as the proxy account I'm running this under, and the job runs stand alone but complains that the Excel tables are empty?

• Export view data programmatically in Access/SQL Server

  We have an Access application front-end connected to a SQL Server 2000 database. We would like to be able to programmatically export the results of some views to whatever format we can (ideally Excel, but CSV / tab delimited is fine). Up until now we've just hit F11, opened up the view, and hit File-Save As, but we're starting to get results with more than 16,000 results, which can't be exported. I'd like some sort of server side stored procedure we can trigger that will do this. I'm aware of the sp_makewebtask procedure that does this, however it requires administrative rights on the server, and for obvious reasons we can't give that to everyone. Any ideas?

• Sql server execute permission; failure to apply permissions

  I've just migrated from SQL2000 to SQL2008 and I have started getting an execute permission issue on a stored proc which uses sp_OACreate. The rest of the system works fine with the db login which has been setup and added to the database. I've tried: USE master GO GRANT EXEC ON sp_OACreate TO [dbuser] GO But this fails with the following error: Msg 15151, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot find the user 'dbuser', because it does not exist or you do not have permission. I'm logged into the server as sa with full permissions. I can execute a similar sql statement and apply the permissions to a server role, however not a login/user. How do I apply the changes to the specific user/login? I can apply the permissions to the public role and it resolves my issue; however this seems to be a security issue to me which I don't really want to apply to the live server.

After logging in, they will be able to change configurations (normal request/response) will be able to receive alarms sent by the server (a server side push) Now, the question is how to implement the alarms. I first thought of using some long polling approach (Comet), but as the amount of clients will definitely belimited to 5-10, I'm now thinking to go with a simpler approach. What are the options I have? Would it be okay to just let the clients poll the server? Important aspects are: Alarms should be delivered in (nearly) real-time. Alarms must not get lost (a lost alarm could cause harm to real people).

  I think I need some pointers on security in SQL Server. I'm trying to restrict some of our end users from getting access to certain columns (i.e. SSN) on a table. I thought I could just use column level security to restrict access to the columns. That successfully prevented users from accessing the table directly, but I was surprised that they could still get to those columns through a view that accessed that table. I followed the tips here: http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/2124/filtering-sql-server-columns-using-column-level-permissions/ Those were very helpful, but when I created a view at the end, the intern was able to access that column by default I've read that views are the best way to accomplish this, but I really don't want to go through and change all of the views and the legacy front-end application. I would rather just restrict it once on the table and if a view tries to access that column it would just fail. Is that possible or am I misunderstanding how security works in SQL Server?

Do you think I'd need an i7 over an i5? Is 4 cores enough/too much? Can anyone sugest a nice, reasonably priced case that will hold 6-8 drives and stay cool Should I wait for Sandy Bridge parts?

How do I create the device that then would receive it? Finally, how do I Parse the text message?

• Accessing resources on localhost using domain credentials

  I'm trying to set up Team Foundation Server 2010, Sharepoint Server 2010 and Report Server 2008R2. I apologize for how long my question/problem is but I'm really lost on where to even look so am being as descriptive as possible in hopes that I'm making sense. The goal: Since developers can be inside or outside the firewall there needs to be a single http point of entry to TFS that works regardless of which side of the firewall you are and needs to work with external access to SharePoint and Report Server. Meaning we have it set up in DNS so buildserver.mydomain.com: points to the build service box which contains all of the services listed at the top of this post and specific services are defined/located by the port number. This is working great on every machine inside and out except for from the build server itself. All services must be able to work using external URLs. If I use http:// buildserver.mydomain.com:4800/tfs (the external URL) from my notebook which is behind the firewall I'm able to login with my domain credentials as expected. If the other developer points to the same URL from their home which isn't on the domain they are also able to login using their domain credentials. However if I am directly on buildserver and call SharePoint, TFS or Reporting Server from (i.e. http:// buildserver.mydomain.com:4800) itself using the external URL, I am prompted for a username and password. Entering my domain credentials results in another prompt to enter my credentials again. It will prompt three times regardless of which credentials are used (I have rights as a domain admin) and then after the third prompt directs me to a blank white page as though access was denied. There are no errors displayed on the page and nothing ends up in the event viewer. From buildserver if i use just the host name (the internal URL), then I'm prompted a single time for credentials and it works. i.e. http:// buildserver:4800/tfs works from the server itself. The behavior is identical for any service requiring authentication. Meaning from the box itself Sharepoint Central Admin, SharePoint WebApp, TFS, TFS Web Access, Report Server and Report Manager all fail using the external URL but will succeed if called using the interal URL. So the problem comes into play when configuring all of the services to work together. The only way to configure TFS is locally from the server which means I must point to the internal reporting server url (http:// buildserver:4800/reports and reportServer respectively instead of http:// buildserver.domainname.com:4800 like they need to be) since external URLs aren't working from itself. If I configure TFS to use the internal URL for Report Server then creating team projects or working in the SharePoint site for the team project fails for anyone not inside the domain since their machines have no idea who http:// buildserver:/reports even is or how to resolve them. I have configured Sharepoint with Alternate Access Mappings as well as set up Report Server to listen for external URLs. The external URLs simply aren't working when called from the server itself. • SQL Server 2000, large transaction log, almost empty, performance issue?

  For a company that I have been helping troubleshoot their database. In SQL Server 2000, database is about 120 gig. Something caused the transaction log to grow MUCH larger than normal to over 100 gig, some hung transaction that didn't commit or roll back for a few days. That has been resolved and it now stays around 1% full or less, due to its hourly transaction log backups. It IS my understanding that a GROWING transaction log file size can cause performance issues. But what I am a little paranoid about is the size. Although mainly empty, MIGHT it be having a negative effect on performance? But I haven't found any documentation that suggests this is true. So I am guessing it is not a problem, anyone know for sure?
