• Relational Database arrays (H2, Java)

  I seem to have two options on how to implement arrays, and I want to know which I should go with: Use the ARRAY data type and (from what I understand) effectively serialize data objects into the database (which in my case are just wrapped primitive types; don't know of another way to make this work). Use a separate table and map with foreign keys for each array item. If you have experience with this (especially with H2), which would you recommend?

• How should I lay-out my PHP login class?

  So, there is going to be one login form; however 1 of 3 types of members will be signing in member_type_a, member_type_b, member_type_c all of whom have some of the same properties, and some whom may have specific methods and/or properties to them. • Should the argument be passed by reference in this .net example?

  I have used Java, C++, .Net. (in that order). When asked about by-value vs. by-ref on interviews, I have always done well on that question ... perhaps because nobody went in-depth on it. Now I know that I do not see the whole picture. I was looking at this section of code written by someone else: XmlDocument doc = new XmlDocument(); AppendX(doc); // Real name of the function is different AppendY(doc); // ditto When I saw this code, I thought: wait a minute, should not I use a ref in front of doc variable (and modify AppendX/Y accordingly? it works as written, but made me question whether I actually understand the ref keyword in C#. As I thought about this more, I recalled early Java days (college intro language). A friend of mine looked at some code I have written and he had a mental block - he kept asking me which things are passed in by reference and when by value. My ignorant response was something like: Dude, there is only one kind of arg passing in Java and I forgot which one it is :). Chill, do not over-think and just code. Java still does not have a ref does it? Yet, Java hackers seem to be productive. Anyhow, coding in C++ exposed me to this whole by reference business, and now I am confused. Should ref be used in the example above? I am guessing that when ref is applied to value types: primitives, enums, structures (is there anything else in this list?) it makes a big difference. And ... when applied to objects it does not because it is all by reference. If things were so simple, then why would not the compiler restrict the usage of ref keyword to a subset of types. When it comes to objects, does ref serve as a comment sort of? Well, I do remember that there can be problems with null and ref is also useful for initializing multiple elements within a method (since you cannot return multiple things with the same easy as you would do in Python). I have the function with following signature: void box_sort(int**, int, int) and variable of following type: int boxes[MAX_BOXES][MAX_DIMENSIONALITY+1] When I am calling the function box_sort(boxes, a, b) GCC gives me two warnings: 103.c:79: warning: passing argument 1 of ‘box_sort’ from incompatible pointer type (string where i am calling the function) 103.c:42: note: expected ‘int **’ but argument is of type ‘int (*)[11] (string where the function is defined) The question is why? Whether int x[][] and int** x (and actually int* x[]) are not the same types in C?

• How do I debug a Unity Container "Resolve"?

  I'm using the MS Unity container to do dependency injection, but a "Resolve" is returning unexpected results. Is there an way I can debug this resolution? It would be great if I could view what Types/Instances are registered in the container, but I can't see where this is stored when using QuickWatch.   I'm wondering how to implement prototypal inheritance in Python. It seems like the way to do this would be to either use a metaclass to cause instantiations to actually be classes, rather than objects, or use some magical powers to transform an existing object into a class. The second method would seem to be more flexible, in that it could be applied to existing objects of varied types, while the first would likely be more convenient for typical use cases. Insights on the practicality of these two approaches, as well as alternative suggestions, are hereby requested.

  I am migrating to wcf and trying to figure out how I'm going to declare my Data Contracts properly. Some of the types I have been demoting are from a third party that I am unable to change. Are attributes the only way to explicitly declare data contracts in wcf? I know about the auto data contract functionality in 3.5, but the books I'm readin discourage that. And besides, that way assumes all state is publically available, which is oftentimes not the case.

• How to test chrome extensions?

  Is there a good way to do this? I'm writing an extension that interacts with a website as a content script and saves data using localstorage. Are there any tools, frameworks, etc. that I can use to test this behavior? I realize there are some generic tools for testing javascript, but are those sufficiently power to test an extension? Unit testing is most important, but I'm also interested in other types of testing (such as integration testing).
