I'm looking for something that can drop an image of Windows onto an uninitialized Hard Drive. I have new units that haven't even had the partition table created on them, and I'm trying to come up with a one (or two) step process for getting a disk image onto them.
I've tried clonezilla, but that doesn't seem to like the lack of partition table, and as far as I can tell, Acronis doesn't work either.
For some bad reason Microsoft decided to remove all standard desktop icons besides the Recyle bin.
It is easy to create shortcuts to each single disk using create shortcut method.
But I would like to have the computer icon too.
I guess there will be an increased demand to create useful shortcuts on Windows 8 Servers Desktop, because the metro surface 'on the backside of your screen' is just impractical.
I've been trying to determine what the correct stripe width for a RAID-50 volume is but haven't been successful in google searches or empirical tests. The volume is built off of 4 disk spans that contain 6 disks each. If I understand it correctly, each individual span is a RAID-5 volume and the 4 spans are combined using RAID-0. However, I'm not seeing any noticable effect when I vary the stripe-width from 2-20. Suggestions?
We have large multi-gigabyte data sets on which we run very complex queries, for example
{
$or: [ { id: 30000001, ... }, { id: 30000005, ... }, ..., { id: 30001005, ... } ]
}
It seems that CPU is actually a bottleneck at this point, so I'd be advantageous to be able to run multiple mongod instances on the same set of database files.
We've considered using replica sets to this end, but would prefer to not require the extra disk space simply for CPU reasons.
After performing a large delete in MySQL, I understand you need to run a NULL ALTER to reclaim disk space, is this also true for reclaiming index space?
We have tables using 10G of index space and have deleted/archived large chunks of this data and unsure if we need to rebuild the table in order to decrease the size of the index.
Can anyone offer any advice?
We are trying to avoid rebuilding the table since it would take quite awhile and lock the table.
Thanks!
I notice that GRUB (or is it GRUB2?) asks which version of Linux I'd like to boot, and outdated versions of the kernel are listed. How do I remove these and their associated files to save disk space? Since I'm new to Linux, is there any reason why I shouldn't remove them?
I'm trying to install Windows 8 with Bootcamp on my Macbook Pro.
Sadly it won't let me get past the disk partition choice (even after formatting the Bootcamp-drive).
It says:
Windows can't be installed on this storage device. The chosen harddisk contains a MBR-partition-table. Windows can only be installed on GPT-harddisks on EFI-systems. freely translated
What is going wrong here?
Here's a photo:
I have an HD 250 Gb It is portioned to C,D,E C has 50 GB D has 50 GB and the rest is given to E, On C I have Windows 7, I decided to install Opensuse On E. I have installed Opensuse Successfully. Now Opensuse loader shows Windows7 option when I it loads but, when I chose to load windows 7 I get " A Disk read error occured, press ctrl+alt+e to restart". Does any one has an Idea How to fix windows 7 and keep Opensuse ? My Opensuse is 12.2. Thanks
In my Core i5 desktop machine I tried to install windows 7 32 bit Ultimate. I received blue screen of death while installing OS. Earlier I had was 64 bit Windows vista which was working fine but now i cant install any of OS.
When I try to re-install OS again same error screen pops up? how can I fix this ? I have 4GB of RAM installed does it have problems with 32 bit OS.
When I install second OS I didn't reformat the entire hard disk.
My system doesn't boot at all, upon starting it takes me to the Windows Error Recovery screen saying "Windows failed to start, a recent software or hardware change might be the cause" and gives two options
Launch System Repair (Recommended)
Start Windows normally
But neither options work, upon clicking either of them, some progress bars get displayed and the screen just freezes on "Starting Windows".
I tried booting from the Windows 7 disk but it too freezes on the "Starting Windows" screen.
I even tried booting from ubuntu, slax linux, but they don't work too.
I have used Puttygen to create a public and a private key, and then is ready to let TortoiseHg on Windows 7 do a clone by going to
ssh:[email protected]/somecode
but there seems to be no where to add the private key to TortoiseHg?
The file is already some where on hard disk as somefile.ppk Does someone know how to add it?
My dad already has a copy of Win 7 Pro (full).
If I buy the upgrade edition of Win 7 Pro (student discount), could I use the full disk to install, then enter the new, upgrade key code to activate it?
I can't seem to get a student discount for the full version.
My computer was working fine for months but now when it starts up the Windows XP screen comes up to show the computer is starting up but then a blue screen appears with the error below:
BAD_POOL_CALLER
STOP: 0x000000C2 (0x00000043, 0xDB3C6000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
I have tried booting off the Windows XP CD and trying to do a re-installation but when the setup try's to query the disk the setup crashes and exists.
I've run diags and that says everything is fine.
Any ideas?
I just want it to save the file to disk, not bring up a dialog and make me click "Save File" each time. The file types that I'm downloading are not listed in Firefox's Applications preferences, and I see no way to add them. I'm using Firefox 3.6.2.
I'm using Windows 7 and installed a hard disk. When I formatted it I checked the option to enable file compression.
I copied some files onto the hard drive. How can I see things like the compression ratio, and how much space the files actually take up?
I want to know what files a specific application is trying to access on my disk. I know that you can use fs_usage, but this outputs events from all applications. I know that you can target a single application, but only one that is already running. I want to detect all readfile-events an application is trying to do, ever since it is started. I don't want to miss out on any event.
How do you achieve this?
Hi!
I accidentally deleted a volume in windows disk management. Is there an easy way to undo that action? Or do I have to use a file recovery tool?
Thanks a lot!
I need to reinstall Windows 7 but the problem is that all my partitions are set to Dynamic disk type.Windows cannot install on Dynamic disc type partitions.During the installation process there is an option to format the drive but I cannot change the disc type.Is there any way to convert the partitions back into primary so that I can re-install Windows?I am a complete fool.I don't even know why I converted the partition in which Windows was installed into dynamic type.
I have a 1TB HDD having 4 partitions and all of them are dynamic.
Thanks in advance.
I have a HP ProLiant DL380 G3 running Windows Server 2000 that has been crashing everyday between 6-730am. This started when I changed out a failing hard drive 6 days ago. I have looked at the scheduled tasks which does not have anything pertaining to this issue. Below are the only things I see in the system log and some of the dump files. Can this be a hardware issue if this happens at a certain time frame everyday? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
The previous system shutdown at 6:07:55 AM on 2/7/2012 was unexpected.
System Information Agent: Health: The server is operational again.
The server has previously been shutdown by the Automatic Server
Recovery (ASR) feature and has just become operational again.

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (7a)
The requested page of kernel data could not be read in. Typically caused by
a bad block in the paging file or disk controller error. Also see
KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR.
If the error status is 0xC000000E, 0xC000009C, 0xC000009D or 0xC0000185,
it means the disk subsystem has experienced a failure.
If the error status is 0xC000009A, then it means the request failed because
a filesystem failed to make forward progress.
Arguments:
Arg1: 00000003, lock type that was held (value 1,2,3, or PTE address)
Arg2: c0000005, error status (normally i/o status code)
Arg3: 03400028, current process (virtual address for lock type 3, or PTE)
Arg4: 00000000, virtual address that could not be in-paged (or PTE contents if arg1 is a PTE address)

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
If a kernel debugger is available get the stack backtrace.
Arguments:
Arg1: 00000000, memory referenced
Arg2: 00000002, IRQL
Arg3: 00000001, bitfield :
bit 0 : value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation
bit 3 : value 0 = not an execute operation, 1 = execute operation (only on chips which support this level of status)
Arg4: 804137d6, address which referenced memory

I have a nettop which has no dvd drive. Could I make a small partiton on my hard drive, put all files from a win xp install disk image into that partition, and somehow make that bootable?
It currently has windows 7 installed.
We would like to prevent USB access to machines (primarily Windows XP, 2003 machines) so that it would not be possible for employees to copy anything from the disk to a pen drive.
These files really get on my nerves. Can I make OSX not create them somehow? (._blah are only created on NTFS external disk, .DS_Store are created everywhere)
Hello,
I am trying to search for a book that would teach me how to choose web server HW requirements (hard disk space/technology, ram, internet connection) based on web site statistics (requests per second, etc...), how to scale webservers in case my website is getter higher traffic, etc
All I get from the internet is software-related articles. Does anyone know how I can dig in for this kind of information? May be I am just searching using the wrong keywords.
Thanks
I can see from this page here:
http://www.linuxatemyram.com/
That the correct amount of free ram is on the "-/+ buffers/cache" line. The extra ram being used is for disk caching. However, I noticed that the total amount of memory used listed in "-/+ buffers/cache" line is significantly less than the sum total of the "RES" column of the processes shown in top. And AFAIK, the "RES" column is how much physical memory is being used by a process.
How do you explain this discrepancy?
